TROY (2004) DIRECTOR'S CUT FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

Mike

I quote the "that's why nobody will remember your name" line a lot. This is a good movie. I doubt I may just do the YouTube on this one, I don't know if I've got 2 hours for it, but it's a solid flick.

Inject this film in my veins!!! Probably the greatest shortest speech in a movie by Achilles to his myrmidons before they reach the beach, (greatest SHORTEST lol I'm Not saying greatest speech ever lol) I got goosebumps when I first heard it, this film has some of my favorite quotes of all time, IMMORTALITY TAKE IT ITS YOURS!!! So much more I wanna say but I'll wait after the reaction, thanks for this one! 🙏

danzogonzo

I see now, I'll have to rent the movie myself and time it, so it starts when your movie starts🤯 im new to this but I got it 🫡 btw, I am all the way live and about that life! TIME TO RENT SOME MOVIES! 😉🤣😎🤪

Wow Thank You! Epic Reaction! Epic movie! I cant remember them all but some of the scenes that were cut out of the Theatrical release 1) We meet Odysseus when he meets Achilles we don't see the two soldiers approaching Odysseus with his dog 2) The fight between Hector and Achilles is slightly shorter 3) When Troy is falling we don't see the women getting assaulted or the babies being thrown and the hangings I believe we just see the men getting killed 4) The movie opens with the reading then we see the two armies there is no dog at the beginning and I'm not 100% knowledgeable with the score but there are changes I just don't know how much from the theatrical to directors, I know the score was different during the Hector Achilles fight but overall guys I'm glad you'll enjoyed it your facial expressions were perfect!

This movie was loosely based on Homer's The Iliad. Not sure if you guys were aware of that. The dialogue, the great characters, all come from Greek myth. This movie has depth because of that. Regardless, great reaction as always.

TheMediaKnights

Thank you for the suggestion! That little speech and his energy throughout the film made it clear why all those men followed him!

TheMediaKnights

Thank you for letting us know what they removed! Those little moments they included I believe added depth to the movie. We'll check out the theatrical at some point on our own time to compare but something tells me we are gonna prefer this cut as well.

TheMediaKnights

Yes! We were aware and discuss a little more about it during our closing segment. Very interesting to see how they translated elements on to the big screen. Truly a fun epic and a spectacle to watch!

Yes depth for sure 🙏and originally I preferred the theatrical release at first because I Hate seeing women getting r-worded (I hate saying the r word) it's abhorrent horrific all of the above so the first time I saw the directors cut that left a sour taste in my mouth it was extremely off-putting I don't think it was necessary to progress the story they were telling, we get it we know what horrific things happened in ancient times we don't need to see all of it, but aside from that I love this cut way better! 🙏

Fantastic watch-along my friends, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You two made wonderful points as usual, and it was great listening to them as I watched the film. This is my first trip through the Directors Cut which I bought specially for this. I have seen the original a half dozen times; this version is vastly better than the theatrical cut, but you can probably tell I've always enjoyed that anyway. It is just such a fantastic and timeless story. It doesn't have the depth of The Illiad, because nothing could. But it captures, in minature, the scope of the conflict and its heroic characters. Although the Illiad is seen from the side of the Greeks, and who are fighting for honour and justice, it is also sympathetic towards the Trojans who fight for love and for home. The tragic element of the story is what I've always enjoyed most. The heroes aren't safe from terrible ends, and I think that easily the most sympathetic character in the story and in the movie is Hector, who is an honourable and good man who cares for his family and his country and gets that gruesome, awful death. Achillies is arrogant and scornful of all who he sees as beneath him, including kings, but he cares about his men and fights to avenge his cousin and in that beautiful scene on the beach with Priam he shows the proper respect to a grieving father and "a better king" than his own. I also love the scene - not in the original cut - where he and his cousin drink and he talks of the men he has killed with sorrow although not regret. The movie captures, perfectly, the utter tragedy of war whilst also honouring and respecting the great deeds and heroism of the soldiers. It's also beautifully written with some fantastic and affecting dialogue, and is endlessly quotable. There's not a bad performance in the whole film either. Cox is magnificent and horribly egotistical. (You guys MUST cover Succession, please tell me you're gonna if you've not seen it. He's also wonderful in Rob Roy, a career best in some ways.) Pitt is fabulous of course, but so is Orlando Bloom who captures Paris' vulnerability and crushing sense of guilt over what he has unleashed. The great Peter O'Toole is wonderful as Priam, whose dignity is maintained right to the end; Petersen had to cast that part perfectly and he does. Brendan Gleeson, who plays Menalus is a wonderful actor; you'll love him in Braveheart. You should also try and watch a movie called The General, about the Irish gangster Martin Cahill, which is shot in black and white and is tremendous fun and but also haunting and dark. Look out too for Mr Mercedes, the first season of which is Stephen King's book of the same name where he plays a retired detective ... a flawless display of acting brilliance. I've been a big, big fan for years. Diana Kruger is doe-eyed and shell-shocked at what has been done in her name ... but it's Eric Bana who steals the movie for me as Hector. His compassion and loyalty and devotion to duty and family makes hsi death a soul crushing moment. He doesn't just occupy the role, he becomes the role, it's a tremendous performance. Guys, thank you for putting up such an awesome film. It was great fun to watch that this afternoon as I was working away.

Another great movie with Brad Pitt and stars Bruce Willis is 12 Monkeys. It's a psychological mystery and is very good. If you haven't watched it you guys need to. It's great

Great reaction guys, thank you! This is my first time watching the Director’s Cut. The extra shots were incredible. My only complaint is the MUSIC being replaced, especially the fight between Hector and Achilles! The original score by James Horner is one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time, I’m shocked they would replace it. Apparently it was replaced with Danny Elfman’s music from Planet of the Apes which I find strange. Highly recommended watching the original fight to see which you like better. I think it makes a huge difference. The original was just a simple but beautiful percussion sound playing over and over, almost like a xylophone or a light drum. It made the fight extremely tense and heart racing. Original fight scene: https://youtu.be/NQ62frK74u0?si=dwJCgGkaarGc62Hn

One of my favorite unexpected scenes was when Achilles was crying over Hector’s dead body and says “We’ll see each other again soon my Brother.” They were kindred spirits and could have been best friends in another life. I think Achilles liked Hector the moment he met him. There’s a smirk on his face during their entire meeting in the temple, and Achilles doesn’t want to fight him. He respected him from the start. He was just blinded by anger after his cousins death. But his convo with King Priam reminded Achilles that Hector was a good man, with good morals and serving a good King. I don’t think Achilles was only crying for Hector, but for many other good men that he was forced to kill because of selfish rulers like Agamemnon. Achilles had to kill his “brother" Hector, a good man, cousin to the woman he loved, and now has to live with that guilt.

As usual always a pleasure reading your take on these films! Agree with what you said in terms of the performances. Everybody here did a great job! Loved how they showed us the different shades of Hector and Achilles. They gave those characters a certain complexity that was needed in order to understand their thought process as well as their ultimate decisions. This movie had us rooting for both of these leads for different reasons. So when they finally get to their long awaited encounter it keeps you at the edge of your seat. You are hoping the fight doesn’t end with one of them dead but deep down you know that is simply not possible. Thank you for going out of your way and purchasing this edition just to view it with us. It truly means so much!

TheMediaKnights

Haven’t seen it yet but we’ve been hearing about this one for a few months now! It’s on the list and one we hope we get to cover soon! The next 2-3 months are gonna be filled with some excellent films of the era.

TheMediaKnights

This is probably the first time we’ve seen or heard of a score being altered this much! It’s a shame they didn’t keep at least a bit of the original. We love James Horner! Definitely gonna check out his work here. Thanks for sharing!

TheMediaKnights

Absolutely tragic! But moments like those us what made us like this film so much. At first Achilles is depicted as this unstoppable killing machine. But it’s the complexities and how they show us that he too is human and he too feels all that weight that make his character so much more relatable. What a phenomenal scene that was!

Matthias Fendl

Great reaction! loved this The film grew more and more on me while watching it because of you guys. Better than the first time 🙌🏻 Much more Thank you You've gotta watch "Kingdom of Heaven"!

Philippe Côté

Over the years, the more I watch it, the more I appreciate this movie. Just fantastic characters and great pace on this director cut. I also suggest you to take a look at "Kingdom of Heaven". Very similar movie in a sense that is very loose interpretation of historical events , with great cast of characters and amazing cinematography. Also a movie that wasn't much appreciated on release but grew in popularity over the years.

Colin Murray

I love this film. Its such a tiny pint size view of the entire conflict but it captures the magnitude of it quite well. I'm a military historian, so studying this conflict is up there (wether it happened or not) the entire story of the Iliad and that of the Odyssey (of which there was talk that there wad going to be a film made, with Bean reprising his role but it never went anywhere). I also love the fact that it just shows you what a piece of shit Agamemnon was and thats without seeing the backstory of him killing his own daughter so they could actually sail to Troy because they had angered Poseidon enough for him to just storm the shit out of the sea. The performances in this movie are epic. From legendary actors like Peter O'Toole and Brian Cox to the younger actors like Eric Bana and Brad Pitt (the fact that they cast him as Achilles was a masterstroke because who would have pictured Rusty as a Greek hero 😂😂). Love that you reacted to this and its one of the many reasons I've joined the Patreon (have subbed to you for a couple months now on youtube and your reactions have always been awesome so thought I would just join the Patreon to get the entire film watchalongs 😂)

I’ve seen the both of you instantly recognize composers like James Horner and Danny Elfman within a few seconds of a score being played during a movie, and I always find it SO impressive!! It’s one of the reasons I joined the Patreon. Music in a film makes a huge difference, and you guys are the only reactors that I’ve seen who recognize the composer and give them the credit they deserve. That’s why I HAD to comment about the change in music for Troy DC. As much as I love Danny Elfman, I find it strange that they took his music from Planet From The Apes, when the score was already soooo good!

Giuseppe DeGaetano

If you loved this and the gladiator you’d love Kingdom of Heaven, it’s the same feel as both these movies the Director’s cut just like this is a must. Next time yall do a poll I recommend adding, see what the community thinks.
