It's crazy to me how much Garp gets misunderstood. While he is part of the World Government, his true loyalty has always been to saving lives and protecting the innocent, not to the corrupt bureaucracy itself. He constantly prioritizes his personal sense of justice and humanity, often putting him at odds with the government and their twisted ideals, that's not being 'overly loyal' to a bad system, but an incredibly powerful dedication to people in general despite the system he's stuck in. He's a hero who never compromises on what truly matters which is doing the right thing, and when he breaks down next to ace it hits me every time because he has never been in this situation where he has to choose between family and his place in the world where he can save people.

Akainu was already mentioned I think thrice previously: 1. In Robin's flashback we see him leading the Buster Call as a Vice Admiral. He was also the one blowing up the civilian ship, that the Navy evacuated. 2. Robin & Koby mentioned that there are 3 Vice Admirals, who are the strongest power of the Navy, only namedropping Aokiji though. 3. When Vice Admiral Momonga picked up Boa, all three were shown and mentioned as the one leading this war against the Whitebeard pirates. Fun Fact: Akainu has a Hiroshima dialect in Japanese. It's considered rather monotone and rough. Due to some tv stereotypes it's associated with Yakuza and people always itching for a fight. Many immigrants that came to Hawaii have this dialect. I heard the US equivalent would be Detroit or Chicago accents, but don't know if that's true.

For Mckay: Luffy is often associated with 56 (like now he’s wearing a shirt with this number) because of Japanese wordplay and how Oda likes using numbers symbolically. In Japanese 5 is “go” and 6 can be read as “mu”. “Gomu” is rubber and Luffy is a rubber man

ace is kinda calling him grandpa too carter, but its also more of a rude/informal abbreviation of it, and can be pretty insulting lol - similarly the way he calls whitebeard 'oyaji' is also one way to say dad but can also be translated as 'old man' and such. tone and context contribute a lot to their meaning but a lot of translations also run with ace referring to garp as 'gramps'

ehhh i would think pirates vying for power WOULD want to use this war to get rid of whitebeard and claim his title just like how crocodile is doing. pirates are all about status and would use any opportunity hey get o raise through the ranks. it's more so shanks and kaido are already high in the ranks and known whitebeard for so long if they wanted his title they would've done so long time ago and wouldn't resort to such an underhanded strategy to do so. if anything this cements their "prestige" and honor even more

Peakford continues!!! Once again the geks continue to be goated by understanding Garp's situation. I was very surprised to see some fans and reactors call him a bum for not helping Ace but he's been a marine his entire life, it is his life. All he wanted was for them to have safe lives and be "good" men, a younger generation that he can be outwardly proud of and now they're all in this terrible situation, and the two people he loves the most are criminals by law. Obviously there are some things Garp shouldn't tolerate in the marines, but my heart breaks for him, there's nothing he can do. But lol Luffy showing up just added more stress for him it's so funny 😂

(Sorry in advance to anyone who actually reads this long essay😅) Garp is probably the character I’m most conflicted about in the entire show. He’s a GREAT character, but like McKay said, I don’t love him—but I can’t hate him either. Garp feels like a very realistic depiction of how neutrality or “just following the rules” can still cause immense harm. I’ve always felt that the point of Garp’s character is to show that simply adhering to the law does not make someone moral. This directly parallels Luffy, who follows his own moral code rather than what he’s told is “right.” Luffy is the embodiment of freedom, and he refuses to let anything stand in the way of what matters most to him. Garp, on the other hand, values his code and his role within the system above all else. Even though he doesn’t want Ace to die, he can’t bring himself to break the rules he’s lived by his entire life. Garp is extremely naive in a tragic way. He represents someone so stuck in their ways that they can’t see any alternative solutions to the problems they want to fix. He genuinely wants to help innocent people, but the reality is that while he might save some innocents with his position he’s still complicit in a system that harms countless other innocent people. Garp isn’t explicitly evil, but he makes poor decisions because his principles and his responsibilities are constantly in conflict. Garp saved Ace because he believed a child shouldn’t inherit the sins of their parents, but in doing so he also allowed the government to carry out the mass killing of suspected mothers and their babies, despite knowing they were innocent. And then once Ace became a pirate, Garp believed he could no longer defend him because Ace was now on the “wrong” side of justice, even though Garp knows he’s a good person. That contradiction and conflict perfectly encapsulates Garp’s character. He isn’t someone who can be completely excused of all wrongdoing or fully defended, I believe he’s ultimately a character we’re meant to pity.

Luffy had to go through that nightmare losing his crew, Amazon Lily, nearly died in the Impel Down nightmare, and now showed up to the biggest war of the times where he is so underpowered. Truly a generational sequence of events our GOAT had to go through in such a small amount of time.

So many incredible moments in this stretch, Doffy's speech about justice is iconic, the pure confusion as Luffy falls from the sky hahaha, Oda showing off what he does best, getting you to love characters and hate characters in an extremely short amount of time. To answer that question about how we've gone the whole show without seeing akainu... we actually see him one time before this. Do you guys remember during Robins flashback, when they were evacuating all the citizens on ships. Remember when the ships randomly exploded as they were about to sail away..... Yup.....Akainu. They actually show him for a second too and Aokiji says his name but its his real name. Aokiji, Akainu & Kizaru are all codenames, not their real names. Aokiji=Blue Pheasant, Kizaru=Yellow Monkey, Akainu=Red Dog

I love the scene with Luffy franticly trying to find Ace. I think the impatience from cannon didn’t fully help them see what the scene was trying to demonstrate which was Luffy’s POV. Jumping into a war field randomly will have you in distraught at first. Everything around him seems like a blur. Luffy has been fighting nonstop since sabaody and almost died in impel down. He only has energy due to the energy hormone shot Ivankov gave. After falling from the sky into the water and waking up on a destroyed navy ship, it makes sense Luffy was out of it. And with how big the battlefield is and how loud the fighting is, Luffy panicking was a great tense touch to see. And when he finally sees Ace everything he sees is clear again. The scene was executed so well, I love Luffy and Ace relationship♥️
