The Mercator project is what you get when you want to stretch the map of the globe to be a perfect rectangle. We have “fixed” that by making maps where the corners are rounded, which alleviates that “stretching”. There are other styles of projections.

I think a big reason why people have “no kids” events like weddings is that they want to hang out with the parents with their undivided attention. They don’t want them distracted and going to bed at 7pm because they brought their kid. There’s no reason to even invite those people in that case.

The map discussion feels exactly like the map scene in The West Wing's big block of cheese day episode

I usually listen at 1.5 speed, this is the first time I slowed it down to 0.5 speed to listen to all of Indiana's accolades 😆

Still would love a video of what it's like moving to a different country as an American that wants to get out of this hell hole

Oh this is fun, today I'm that person who knows about a topic. I'm a one child policy person from China. I'm American because from that era, many of those kids got adopted into the US and other countries. You're on the right track with child trends in China but it's a bit more nuanced from what I gather. It varies by place, obviously, but what happened was a millenia old culture which valued big families, got told to take it down to one kid. And boys carry the family name, and family is everything, while girls take care of their parents. So the preference ends up being boys *first*, and once the family has at least 1 boy they then want to try for a girl. The one child policy prevented those second-child births of girls. Now they have a gender imbalance and it's 100% due to the policy. Not-so-fun fact the demographers and sociologists had largely been purged during the cultural revolution so the people making population policy were military scientists and engineers.
