The reason carriers can’t be used for text message history is that most messaging apps are end to end encrypted now. When apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, your carrier wouldn’t be aware there was even a message sent, it’s just encrypted data across the wire.

There is certainly some of that going on, but, I have to be honest -- there is quite a lot of objectively wrong and false information being spread that tends to get picked up by persons of a particular political leaning.
