so during the totem pole japan was actually going at it at the same time, you could see that the 2 players were missing from the japan team standing at the top and they also celebrated when mongolia let go, the show just edited japans team out of it. The fault in the equipment was that one of the pins wasnt fully engaged which they probably found out when they dropped the totems and one of them didnt fully fall down, which means team japan wasnt fully holding the weight of one of the totems. I assume they didnt show any of this as to try look more professional and hide their faults lol
