The next chapter is written and headed your way in a few minutes. That's the good news. The bad news is that I am being destroyed by the flu. It's kicking my whole entire body, and I have the muscle aches to prove it.

I'm lucky I finished the first draft of this chapter early. I'm less lucky that I made an effort to do that because I was planning to go on a trip this weekend and I really wanted to get a second chapter done, or close to it, before I left. That did not happen...

I don't know yet if this is the kind of situation where I'll get over the hump today and then feel pretty good tomorrow, or if I'm in for a longer ride. I figure I'll have a better sense of that based on how I feel when I wake up again.

Will update you tomorrow evening to let you know if I'm more alive or more dead. But since we're here and this has come up, let me run the Author Down! Emergency Plan I'm considering past you all.

We are not in a part of the story where I was planning to take a break. I was thinking one might come up three or so months from now. But this is also not a bad place for one. I think. So, if I'm still super sick tomorrow and unlikely to get you guys the next chapter, I'm considering pausing billing for a month.

What I would do during the pause:

There's a lot of work that I want to do on Super Supportive to make the experience of reading it better for you and writing it better for me. Priority one would be getting a small backlog of chapters. Priority two might be some revision work on the early parts of the story and really tackling the business end of things (figuring out audio books, figuring out ebooks, publishers, etc...).

What you would do during the pause:

Receive no charges from my Patreon for one month starting on the day of the pause.

I hope some of you would stick around and talk to me once a week. I'm under the impression, after reading the Patreon post on billing pauses, that I can still make new posts and members can still read my posts even if they're not being charged. So I was hoping to give a weekly update of some kind, maybe with a couple of questions from the recent 20 Question Q&A that turned into the 200 Question Q&A answered. I'd really like to sneak a chapter in for you guys, too. So that the story doesn't go cold in your minds.

So that's what's up, and what might happen if I'm still in bad shape tomorrow. If you see any glaring flaws in this plan or know about pitfalls I might not be aware of, let me know.

Chapter incoming!

If the Flu is fucking you up then you are out for a whole week. The only cure for the flu is to wait it out

Morgwath

Get well

Panda

Get well soon!

Shimelton

Oh no! Get better! Sooner! If the delay happens, I guess it’s about time I reread from the beginning anyway.

biopower

Whatever happens, I hope you get well soon!

Scott Crawford

I honestly don't think people will mind if you take a month off without pausing payment. Authors deserve paid sick leave and vacation time too!

Zauber

All is good, get well soon.

Cliff

Feel better. Your proposal for handling the month sounds more than fair.

Meridun

You can also hang out in discord with us and try not to be totally appalled :)

HumbleBee

Take care and get well! I’ll be looking forward to read the story again during the break.

Frank Wells

Take care of yourself

Stargazer_hfy

You have my support regardless. Feel better Sleyca.

Echo

Feel better soon!

Enzer

Please please please remember to actually take time to rest and recuperate. Your story is amazing, but your health will always be more important.

Jean

🍲 for you because the flu probably won't let you eat much more substantial. Whatever you decide: feel better soon!

Jack

That sounds like a good plan! Imo the priority should be for you to have time to take a break and recover from illness, it can really push you down and make you feel worse if you try to power through it. But if it would also give you time to figure out story-adjacent stuff and make a backlog again, then even more worth it. Maybe be careful you're not eating into your hiatus time by combining it with sick time? Either way I support you taking a break if it means you'll be better off later!

Aaron A. Cole

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well! I put together these SuperSupportive memes to hopefully brighten your day and bring a little extra cheer as you rest and recover. https://i.imgur.com/BOG2KCy.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/mzBGaKc.jpeg

Andre

So hey be wary of the glitch where those who have paid for chapters up until now might lose access to those chapters until the unpause but overall take the time you need

David Reynolds

Get better, do what you need to. Don't want you to burn out! Thanks for letting us know what is happening.

Tekbox

Hope you'll recover soon and take a break if you need it

Tanulli

Hope you recover quickly

Andre

Honesty i don't mind you not pausing payment and just taking a paid month off on me :^P

puppy0cam

just be warned, pausing billing also pauses the ability for new people to sign up to the Patreon.

PatienceHoney

Hate that you are feeling cruddy. Love the time "off" plan!

elijah pickett

Good for you. Take you time. Thank you🫶

Nathan

Hey Sleyca, I've mentioned it on multiple posts but I think slowing your output to, for example one chapter a week, might be better? The skips are a bandaid imo and if any unexpected event completely derails your schedule I think you should probably reconsider? Not charging people is very nice of you and I really respect that. I still think you should maybe work on a schedule that's not a hair away from derailing and that is less stressful for you as well as more reliable for the readers. You're producing good content, you have a decent following, you can do it =) Take care 💪

LurkerFrontCenter

I think it's a good idea as long as you set a reasonable return date, don't try to return too soon miss it then be even more discouraged to make your return. That's how super minion went down

jacob lusk

Do what you need to to keep your health up. I really enjoyed your story and will hopefully be capable of being patient. Inevitably, we all hope for more because it's so well written. That said if it takes you time to keep writing at the quality that you have been then take your time. P.s that's even more true when you're sick.

Daedalus

>publishing deals I imagine that the Selkie has been soup-hunting for quite some time.

Jeppe Fiig

Dont care if you dont pause billing, hope you get better soon, always hate having the fly myself

Jazehiah

Breathe. Relax. Take the time of sickness as an excuse to rest. Don't feel guilty about it either. I think I speak for many when I say that an extended break is better than complete burnout. Weekly posts sound like they could be fun. I bet a lot of people here would be happy to engage in discussion.

Amber Gregory

My vote: Get better, then take a real, luxurious rest that leaves your immune system refreshed and ready to fight any more bugs that come your way. The month "off" you have planned sounds too full of work.

SlimCognito

Good luck. People are allowed to be sick. I would personally be ok with paying if you need to take some time off during flu season. That said, maybe a break would be good for you? I did notice a higher frquency of missed chapters as of late. Maybe holiday season? Maybe some burnout? Do as you feel like. You're the author and owner of the patreon after all.

Julian Bello

Honestly? I'd be happy. I lost track a few chapters back and have been letting the backlog grow scarier and scarier. I do, as always, stay winning

Cyrus McEnnis

I say this pretty often on Patreon - you're effectively self-employed. And part of that is making damn sure you have holidays, and the capacity for sick-leave. Personally? Don't feel like you have to pause Patreon. I'm here to support your writing, and part of that from my perspective is making damn sure you don't burn out or worse because you felt obligated to provide me fresh, steaming hot content direct from the Content-Mines of Artonia IV. Take a break whenever you need it. Just let us know what's going on, and you're good with me.

Nathan

Same, in any decent work setting people are able to take sick days and holidays. I don't see why it would be different for a writer on Patreon.

Chas Becht

Put your health first. I find that recovery always takes longer than I expect. I for one have no problem with the emergency plan, but I also wouldn't be upset if billing didn't pause. I support creators on patreon so that the people who make the things I enjoy can have a steady reliable income and keep making things. I don't think of it as a purchase on a month-to-month chapter-by-chapter basis. More like an annual donation to PBS broken into monthly installments. If someone seems worth supporting, I just add them to the subscription list and put it out of my mind. I may look once a year or so to see if my subscriptions need modification, but I don't worry about a "slow month" or whatever. Too granular for me. Maybe I'm weird though. Wouldn't be the first time.

Reid Palmquist

Rest up. Every other job gets sick leave (or should) and Authors do too! Take the time off you need rather than keeping yourself from recovering by forcing yourself.

PaintingBig

Definitely take a break! The month long break sounds really cool—I would love it if you figured out a way to put the story in e-books form, and it also sounds like a great way to avoid burnout after writing so much for so long. Either way, take care of yourself. We want to be reading Super Supportive for a long time to come!

VioletSummit

Feel better! We can bear the burdens of your illness just fine.

Karim Saadi

Gute Besserung!

WhisperOfLife

Breaks are good. Hope you get well soon!

Aspiring Moth

I'm all for this, even if you do finish the next chapter in time. it's not like we'll have a content drought if you're updating the pre selection and maybe funeral arcs, and you having a backlog will smooth out the story delivery on our end while making it easier and less stressful for you. I hope you feel better soon regardless of what you choose, and look forward to the delicious serving of soup coming shortly

Mykiel

Take care! Don’t hesitate to take a break, I think a lot of us are here for the long run and will (somehow) manage to survive one month without new chapters. I’ll definitely look forward for any updates you post though! Also, I don’t know if it is possible with Patreon, but it might be worth checking if there is a way to allow new patreons to join even if billing is paused. It would be nice for new readers who want to catch up after finishing the free content on royal road.

HappyTrails

Take care of yourself

Keven Leigh

Recover so you can enjoy your trip.

Chas Becht

Or maybe go to a slower release schedule until a backlog is built up, then adjust the schedule periodically to maintain the backlog. Just a thought.

Karl

Feel better soon. I think you should be allowed to take paid sick leave.

Guindolin

Oh no, feel better soon! ❤️‍🩹🙏🏼🥰 we will be fine if you need the break. I’m here with you for the long run! Oxygen mask on yourself first. Be well! 🤙🏼😁

Faces The Wind

@sleyca needs some chicken soup for the soul and some for the body. Soups up!

Milan Seyed Mahmoud

Take care of yourself first! Recovering properly means more story for everyone in the long term, so never feel guilty about taking a break when you need it. We want what's best for you!

Jacob

stay safe stay warm and get healthy boss!

Wandakin

Please prioritize your personal health and well being. I promise we will all still be here.

Lamby18

👑

A terrestrial being

Get well soon, and please, ALWAYS prioritize yourself/your health over the fans of your story

Flopmind

I am down for basically anything that gets me closer to a Super Supportive audiobook. I love audiobooks, and I love soup. Plus some people are just entirely checked out on a recommendation if it's not on a platform they use, like Amazon Kindle or Audible, so it's been hard to recommend to my cousins and such.

Lucius Patrick Watson

I'm not going anywhere. Story is too well written. Stay healthy

Alyse McGuinn

I hope you feel better and a break is probably due! I think your plan seems good and I'll still be here :)

Halosty

Yeah writing with the flu can suck. We'll be around for whatever you decide you need to do

zdm

Strongly support taking a break to figure out publishing and making this project all the more sustainable

Greg Arnold

Take care of your self!! The story is a long one and you need to be healthy to do it justice! No one here wants you to drive yourself into the ground :)

Lilyamiia

Hope you feel better soon ❤️

jg

Interesting renegotiation. Will pause response for chapter feast. A successful flu potion : Crush 2 cloves of garlic combine with a cube of diced ginger maybe some tumeric root spoon of honey juice of lemon chili cayenne pepper in a shot glass with some boiling water and stir . Drink quickly and purge later with the breaking out of the unusual sweats. Inhale tea tree or eucalyptus oil over gentle steam under a towel. Yoghurt, or smoothie or custard

Neil

Definitely take care of yourself, I'm not sure where you are at in the world, but it's been going around in my area. I spent most of last week sick myself, and am only feeling better today.

Lucas

Hope you feel better soon!

Josh Brooks

Nice try, Sleyca. We all know you’re just in post-affixation /j

Kate Yen

This all sounds totally a-ok! I'll make sure to come to the comments and chat if that's what you want 😂 Either way, I hope you feel better. The flu is no joke

Spygeneer

Yo! What are the odds, I've been bedbound for the last several days myself. Heres hoping we both get better asap!

Listerine

I think you ought to take a month of posting off to destress a bit and do some story maintenance! And recover from your cold. The chapter you just released feels great for a pause, imo. Feel better!

Corationis

This, though I hate to admit it, is a good plan. Like yeah lol, this feels like what I would do if I was in your position. A backlog of chapters seems healthy and I'm very excited to hear that you might be getting an audiobook. If I could recommend a performer I really loved Eric Michael Summerer's work in The Perfect Run series (he's currently affiliated with Podium Audio I believe). ALSO I would adore some weekly posts, it just sounds like a good time. I'm a big fan of how you approach the creative process, it gives me motivation to keep polishing up my own art. In particular I'm curious as to what you'll be editing in the earlier chapters, I think an update about that would be a lot of fun to see. But that's enough out of me I need to hurry off and finally read this chapter!

GryphonKnight

> I hope some of you would stick around and talk to me once a week. I'm under the impression, after reading the Patreon post on billing pauses, that I can still make new posts and members can still read my posts even if they're not being charged Beware of Chicken’s Casual Farmer just paused Patreon billing for 2x months while he gets book 5 ready to publish During the pause he has been posting art, and an AU, just so the Patreon is not dead quiet So YES you can keep posting while billing is paused And YES we can chat with you

Eva

I like the idea of the Author Pause so shortly after the Klein Pause and that other one. Do all the things, take the break feel better from the flu and the planning and for having some backlog and all the other stuff. Rest up and come back to us ready for another year.

Melody Haren Anderson

Take care of yourself, best to not push because that is how you get a sickness that lingers forever rather than getting better.

GryphonKnight

During the billing pause People could post fan artwork Have limerick / haiku contests Reader polls One author I follow posts nano stories weekly to keep people interested in their Patreon

Fabian

Took me 2 weeks to get over the flu this year. Changes in attention, clarity and priorities are the worst. Fearing they will stay changed, making me another person. Take your time, get well! As long as we know a rough timeline, its fine (without, its fine too).

Winter Holiday

Billing pauses on Patreon do not function well. There are a lot of bugs. Depending on how long the break is for, the billing pause may add more work than it is worth.

mrt

We're super supportive patrons (how is this joke not in every post?), not chapter buyers--+1 to not pausing billing. Though if pausing is helpful to you to give you a deadline or reduce pressure, I get that, too

Aspen Furlow

I would absolutely keep paying! This story is so amazing it deserves much patience and I (and I am certain everyone else here) Only wish the best for your health.

Ian T Hathaway

Take care of yourself above all else Sleyca! Updates during a hiatus would be nice, but never feel the need to pressure yourself

Sinnohan

Get well soon! Also, creating a backlog is a great idea.

SnuggleCat

Paid sick leave is a thing. Feel free to not pause the billing

Hallow

I hope you get well soon!

Rafał Trzeciak

I’m 100% happy to be billed regardless, but since you’re planning to sneak in a chapter or two to keep the story fresh, perhaps consider something like your monthly skips—but on a yearly scale. For example, you could release only two chapters in a month instead of six, and designate February (or another month) as a "skip month" each year. Just a thought!

Saaski

Feel better ❤️‍🩹

Elethe

I think a break would be great--but paid leave is a thing and financial security is important. I for one would be very happy for monthly breaks to be put into each year's schedule while continuing to be billed. xo

JLG33

Yes. We're all in it for the long haul, this story is no way close to done. We love living in this world alongside Alden and all his friends. We here and can easily wait until you really ready to get back on the keyboard. Take care of yourself and know that we're all wishing you well too.

JJ Hunter

Wishing you rest and recovery! We are likely at peak for flu-like stuff in the USA right now (https://yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/we-are-likely-at-peak-season), and anecdotally lots of people are getting thoroughly whalloped. Rest up front can make all the difference. I would prefer you keep billing going while you are working on story stuff - we would absolutely enjoy having a weekly non-chapter post to chat with you! Heck, might be fun to have a semi-organized group reread for anyone who wants to participate - the usual 'book club' (heh) crew would love having an arc- level post to chat over revisiting groups of chapters.

ImNotHere

Take care of yourself. Q&A is great. I saw several times people asking about your writing process so if it's not too invasive that's an option too. Let us run wild by starting a conspiracy theory thread with a "What if" writing prompt (not that we waited you for that) Come say hello on the Discord Whatever works for you as long as you take care of yourself first N.B. : for the audiobook, try to lure Morgan Freeman to narrate

Blue Talon

Patreon bill pausing has been known to cause glitches. (I have heard about other authors complaining about it. I don't have first hand info)

Glitter Rabbit (C)

I have been waiting for an audiobook for so long now. This post makes me happier than the actual chapter

StandardBearer

Having the flu sucks hope you feel better soon.

Merf

Your health is what’s most important. We’ll be here when you feel better, so rest up and do what you feel is best.

Stylemys

Get well soon

Flying Goat

I'm also happy to pay while Sleyca gets some R&R. I would suggest just letting folks who don't want to pay pause their subscription on their end, but then they couldn't take part in any Patreon-only discussions in the meantime, so perhaps not a great idea.

Zaeron

Hi Sleyca! I think that my biggest opinion about all this is that it should come at the timing you think is good. I don't mind when sunday chapters arrive monday, or wednesday chapters arrive thursday - If you are sick and need time, take time. SEPARATELY, if you think a break is good, take a break! But don't feel like because you're sick right now, you need to take the break right now - at least, not in my opinion. I'd rather you break when you feel it fits, rather than break because you feel like you might miss a sunday chapter if you don't break right now. Especially when it comes to stuff like the audio book and cleanup stuff, I can't imagine starting your "break" sick as hell and then immediately being down 1/6th of your break by the time you feel better but with all the same work to do... that doesn't sound very break-y to me. Do what works best for you.

Jeremy Goldberg

Your emergency author-down plan sounds good to me, and I hope you feel better soon!

Not_You

Feel better! Take all the break you need, I’ll just reread the story for the fifth time

James Walsh

Breaks are good! Burnout is bad! It makes sense to take some breaks periodically. I'm not concerned about pausing the billing.

Darryl Greensill

Some of my other favourite authors update weekly or monthly. And I have been an Order Of The Stick fan since it was a comic strip in Dragon. It’s fine. Look after yourself. Happier authors write better. Or maybe not, Franz Kafka for example, but maybe it’s genre specific. Anyway, it’s fine!

Protected

Sad about the break but if it's the same flu I'm still recovering from, expect at the very least two weeks of very unpleasant downtime. It's best to take your time and rest.

JennP

Other authors I follow on Patreon have mentioned extreme issues from pausing billing, just to let you know if you don't already

Wren Hensgen

Feel better soon! And take the break if you need it.

Amit Gupta

Hey Sleyca, Just an FYI, No new people can sign up to Patreon during a billing pause. So I urge you to keep releasing the chapters on RR when you pause patreon so that they're not stuck in an awkward place for the break. And pausing RR on a later date when Patreon resumes. Wishing you a speedy recovery .

CrispyCritter

Please take as much time as you need, both to recover and to buildup a backlog. Like others, I don't care whether you pause payments or not. I'm contributing to enable you to write "Super Supportive" as well as you can, not as payment for chapters. Please do whatever it takes to keep SS continuing! As long as you keep us informed about how SS is progressing, I have no worries about contributing.

Andrew Tobin

Was logging on to let her know the same thing. I've been caught a few times looking at signing up to an author on hiatus and not being able to. 🤜🤛

Heather White

Take care of yourself! Bodies are remarkably inconsiderate of imposed deadlines. And they tend to have the final say…

Connor hutson

The mind is willing but the body is not. Rest my friend I have know nary a great storyteller who has let himself become breathless

ChoWingGom

Thank you Sleyca, take good care of yourself and get well soon! I'm not worried about the billing. In my head, it's "supporting an author", not "subscribing to an entertainment service". Bur fiiiiiiine I guess I'll have to do a reread to pass the time. Poor me :p

Zagig

Please don't stop the billing

Francis

I would love it if you took a break to sort out publishing and audiobooks etc !

Bruno Salque

Rest and recover, we can miss 2 weeks, or more, for you to feel better. Please take care of your health, the story is great :)

Parry Henis

Listen here wordsmith, your writing is on par with the top ten percent of books in any given public library. Therefore it is your duty to your magnanimous benefactors as well as to society as a whole to foster and protect your ability. This means doing whatever is necessary to keep your health in a sufficient state to keep writing for the maximum amount of time possible. A few months of scheduled or unscheduled breaks are nothing in the face of the decades of writing we are hoping to get out of you. Seriously though... just today as I settled into the comfy sofa-chair at my therapists I felt this thought-clarifying calm weight settle on me and instinctively thought 'this must be how the weight of the inward path feels'. I know nothing of being ace, a wizard or a rabbit, but trust me, you've got the trauma and mental health stuff down pat. It means a lot to me to feel so seen. All that on top of good story structure, real seeming characters, natural feeling dialouge, great vocabulary choices and so on. So. Please. As a favour to me: be excellent to yourself. Thank you

Tim LaCombe

I see others have the same sentiment but I wanted to post it myself too: for me Patreon is very much “support an author you want to continue to prioritize writing instead of a 9-5” rather than “I *really* want to read a bunch of chapters ahead”. Having two skip days per month is an admirable goal but if you’re sick I’d rather you take time to get better. I don’t know how other people feel but I’d be happy for you to take a week or two break every once in a while just as a general mental health thing - and also because sometimes things just need some cogitation. You have to remember that in this game you’re your own boss. You should treat yourself how you’d want any boss to treat their workers: with care and respect for the fact that you’re a human person and not a machine.

Tim LaCombe

To clarify, since I realize I didn’t say it: I mean without pausing the Patreon.

N Johnson

I love your story so much. I am willing to continue to support you through patreon while you rest and recuperate! You don't have to stop billing... your story is well worth waiting for. After all, We still don't know if Winston ever gets his head out of his as, or if Alden can find a way to get Gorgon out of that lobby/ prison of his. PLEASE take care of yourself and don't burn out!!!!

Mickey Phoenix

Flaw: that you might stop billing me. I'm serious. Please keep billing us! We love your work, and we want to support it, and you.

Roger Tang

I have some stuff I pay for and receive less. I'm fine with a continued billing to help with your recovery.

Zachary Barker

Lol, don't worry about stopping the billing. I pay patreon to support you, because I love your work. I personally just think of it like paid sick leave, go rest!

Sleyca

You guys are completely wonderful. Thank you so much. I just fell asleep a little trying to read articles to make sure I’m sure about how a billingpause would go. So that’s how alert I am! I’m going to make the final decision when I’m actually awake as opposed to now. Thinking yes on the pause. Reading through your comments too. I really appreciate all the graciousness and insight. 😴

JJ Hunter

Sleyca could split the difference and have RR release on a slower schedule for a period while new story chapters on Patreon are on a temporary pause. Honestly, Shoes + every chapter in the Herdcreature arc are so darn meaty that the RR reading experience might be better regardless if those are released on a 1 / week schedule for the next 5 weeks. There's so much to talk about in those chapters!

JJ Hunter

Is today the two year anniversary of Super Supportive first chapter posting on RR? Happy birthday, story! You've grown so much already; thank you for all the feels and nuances that are such catnip for meta musings.

JJ Hunter

Thank you for continuing to inspire me to write stuff for fun again; creativity cannot thrive on endless work emails alone. *glances at the growing 50+ page gdoc of her Patreon comment essays https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r57ObXSO3unO-ogXhHPW6xONTvhEx5wEllbGKLDO8mA/edit?usp=sharing) mildly sheepishly*

CapezzoloNucleare

Please take the pause, rest build a backlog do whatever you need. just chill.

Khent Mercer

"And the why just didn’t matter to him. It had stopped mattering the moment he’d found her there in the grass, put his arms around her, and told her not to be afraid. The universe could go fuck itself. Alden was going to make sure Kibby got out of here and lived forever." I've been somewhat disappointed with the story lately. This short little bit hasn't changed that but it's given me hope and also some genuine joy again. I'm hoping it represents a turning point in Alden's life as his season of choosing nears it's end. I love this story but this is the first real progress moving from profound indecisiveness we've seen in a year of writing and nearly a hundred chapters. The school stuff really, really, really, needs to move faster. I had put the story aside for a bit when a single gym sequence ended up being around six chapters. Or a month of writing and 3% of the total length of the story. It accomplished? Not much really. This story is beautiful and slow is fine but it couldn't hold my interest in weekly instalments until I was able to binge three months of updates to catch up to now. I want to say moments like these make it all worth it. They are an amazing high but I would dearly love if we could finally, finally, move out of what feels like prologue.

Jason Harpster

Jeez go be ill.... Had mild flu and not so mild allergies thru the whole of December. Sometimes all you can do is take the down time and veg out watching TV because everything else takes too much energy.
