After his final class on Thursday, Alden napped for an hour and a half, helped along by the mildest potion Yenu-pezth had given him. When his alarm chimed, a notification he’d set on his interface reminded him to go through his new waking routine.

First, a few minutes thinking about the guilt that had contributed to the recurring nightmare. Boe would probably be smugly exasperated to learn he’d been given that assignment. Next, he spent a while trying to gather fragments of the dreams he’d had.

This afternoon, he recalled a moment when his body had turned to intercept something dangerous. A demon, a piece of one? And the relief he’d felt upon realizing that he was fast enough. The new memory wasn’t much to go on, but he thought he could trace the origin of that movement—arms raised as he spun, twisting with a shield in his hands just in time to stop what was coming—to his practice at North of North against the evil horse simulation.

And there was another recollection in his head. He’d been looking at the video screen for the car’s cameras. Although he couldn’t picture exactly what he’d seen, he had a very clear memory of thinking, Good. It’s hurt too badly to chase us anymore.

Lying on his side with his arm under his pillow, he stared through the bed rail. Honestly, this might be a dark way to wake up for the average person. Is it okay that I’m so excited about it?

It was just much better than what he’d had before. And he was feeling optimistic that the new dreams being on frequent repeat while Yenu-pezth’s work was fresh would crowd out other nightmares that hadn’t even been targeted by the healer. If Alden was busy escaping from the lab every time he closed his eyes, then his brain wouldn’t have time to cough up memories of children’s skulls and giant waves either.

He slid out of his bed then into his clothes before checking the planner on his laptop. His Keeper of Hot Potatoes avatar was rising from its own nap with a dramatic stretching session. “I only have half an hour until I fly to the TC!” he announced, chipper as ever despite Alden’s refusal to connect his account to the internet and make it public so that Hot Potatoes’s copy of Anesidora would be filled with “my real friends!” instead of randomly generated characters.

“I wonder what I should do with all this free time?” the avatar mused.

“Whoever makes this is so obsessed with Avowed.”

Alden read the list of suggested activities that popped up beside the speech bubble. It included things he’d done in the past like homework, “meditation,” and skill practice, along with short errands and amusements a person playing at being a CNH student might enjoy around campus. Hot Potatoes was unaware that Anesidora had gotten very wet recently, so he thought having a snack on the grass in Celena Circle would be fun instead of a bother to the people living in the domes. He was also curious about visiting something called the Sidewalk of Failure over near the workshops.

Alden moved around a couple of things on his schedule for tomorrow morning in case the Here-to-There kept him on the Triplanets overnight, then set the avatar to “socialize.” That would make him wander around Garden Hall until his flight to the TC.

Close enough to flying to Matadero and attending a parade as Stuart’s surprise helper, right?

Instead of going to find out what a Sidewalk of Failure was, Alden checked the contents of his suitcase one last time and went to say goodbye to whichever roommate was making bumping noises in the living room.

He rolled his luggage down the hall and found both Lute and Haoyu engaged in a project he was immediately invested in.

“We’re going to have a tree!”

“It’s a Bromelimas tree.” Haoyu was standing on top of a chair and steadying his bromeliad while Lute bent the limbs on the base of an artificial tree up to hide the plant pot.

“It was going to be a normal Christmas tree, but then we realized Haoyu’s jungle plant might work on top.” Lute took a step back and tilted his head sideways, looking at his handiwork. “If I cut some limbs off of the original top section of the tree and weave them in, I think we’ve got something here.”

“Happy Bromelimas,” said Haoyu, pointing at Alden with his free hand. “Bromelimas lasts for five days, specifically the five days of Celena North’s December finals week. So that’s the seventeenth through the twenty-first this year. But you can wish people Happy Bromelimas starting on the first.”

Alden parked his suitcase by the kitchen table. A basket full of mixed banana varieties was waiting there. “You invented a whole holiday while I napped. Can I make some ornaments for the tree?”

“All members of the huntksi lodge are brothers on Bromelimas,” Haoyu announced. “All bros must ornament the tree or else.”

“Or else what?”

“I’m working on the traditions still.”

“We only realized Bromelimas existed fifteen minutes ago, Cottontail. Don’t rush him.”

Lute turned around. He was wearing his Jolly Roger t-shirt with baby blue pajama pants. “So you’re leaving now to go to…”

He made a box shape with his hands. “But really you’re going to…”

He pointed up at the ceiling. Or maybe that was a number one for Artona I.

“I am. I need to leave in a few minutes. But I can fold a couple of stars for the tree fast.”

“You don’t have to rush. It’s going to take a while for me to make it look cohesive anyway. We’ll either wait to decorate it or leave you a quarter of the limbs. Right, Haoyu?”

“All bros must ornament the tree.” Haoyu cautiously released the bromeliad and stepped down from the chair. His uniform jacket was unbuttoned. “By the way, Alden, did you tell Kon he was invited to come over and use our tub anytime?”

“You didn’t.” Lute sounded betrayed.

“I didn’t. I told him he was invited to persuade Lexi to let him use the tub if he was feeling lucky. I think that was the opposite of encouraging him.”

Kon had been hamming it up on their walk back from Challenge: Apex Towers last night, talking about how some people got spas and clawfoot tubs while other poor souls got moldy lifematter bags and a shower that was always full of Mehdi and his collection of body washes.

Kon had asked Alden not to mention where they’d run into each other. He’d gone to the towers because he wanted to practice without company from their class. “Laughing off my mistakes and the losses in duels isn’t always easy. Tonight I just wanted to practice and be in a bad mood all by myself.”

Alden was surprised to hear that Konstantin ever wanted to be all by himself. And maybe maintaining that image was why Kon would prefer to sneak away to practice instead of having to say, “I want to do my own thing,” to all the people he would normally encourage to tag along with him.

“I told him about class on Friday, too,” said Alden. “About how most of them are probably getting a lecture of some kind in another room. Klein hadn’t sent out an official message about it yet, so Kon hadn’t heard. He didn’t seem too worried, though.”

“I talked to him just a little while ago,” Haoyu said. “He still wasn’t worried about that. But he was on his way back from one of the info sessions they’re having for all the S-ranks.”

“I wasn’t invited,” Lute chimed in.

“All the S-ranks in our program,” Haoyu said.

“I’m hurt. I could leave this school and deprive everyone of my Eliteness, too, you kn—”

Haoyu talked over him. “Kon says the rumors are true, and they’ll be guaranteeing S’s more time on the floor than the regular hero programs at Li Jean and Naya Din offer. That’s what he’s worried about, so he’s the opposite of all the other S’s in our group.” He plopped down into the chair he’d just been standing on. “I feel bad for him.”

“He’s not happy with the extra time?” Alden asked.

“He said it sounded like it’s going to be at least ninety minutes of S-on-S combat every week. If they put him in there, it’s going to be bad for him, isn’t it?”

Alden thought about what he’d seen of Kon’s experience in MPE.

“Shit. That’s going to suck for him unless they do what our instructors do sometimes and give him his own area to practice his spell in.”

“Maybe they’ll do that,” said Haoyu. “Shouldn’t they? Even if you imagine his skill and spell combo being the strongest, most perfect version of what it is, it’s a long cast time for a fight. I think he’ll always have to have a team or be able to plan ahead or sneak around to make it work in combat. Something.”

Lute had bent over to pick up the top of the artificial tree and twist some of its limbs experimentally. “I don’t understand why Kon picked that. At all. He was into flashy Adjuster spells. Classic super-celeb stuff only. And then he coin flips his whole future on a one-of-a-kind that sounds like it’s an experimental workhorse?”

“Oh, it can be flashy,” said Alden. “You should’ve seen us all flying across the MagiPhys gym on a dog crate.”

“That sounds worth watching for sure. But it doesn’t sound like Konstantin. He wanted to be a darkly alluring Thor character last I heard. Literally, he wrote ‘with dark allure’ on a poster. All in black, lightning in his fists, and glitter in his hair—legions would swoon under his smoldering gaze.”

“What?” Alden was trying to picture it. He thought of Kon’s disposition as more sunny than dark. “When was this?”

“He went through a few different versions of a hero persona.” Haoyu was watching Lute. “It’s true that he never talked about using any power that’s like what he’s got now. But he seemed proud about getting a special offer. From the first day he told us about it at school. Lexi was freaked out and angry, but Kon said he was really happy with the choice. So that’s what matters. Some people just want unique talents, and since he couldn’t be a U-type, maybe this was lucky for him.”

U-types were rare to start with, and with very few exceptions they didn’t get selected from among Anesidora-born Avowed.

“I suppose I can see him deciding he wanted the adventure of being the first of his kind,” Lute said. “And I can see him having so much self-confidence that all the things that could go wrong with that pinged off of him instead of penetrating.”

“He’s going to be awesome one day, reassembling whole buildings or something.” Alden said it not because he was sure Kon would really gain the ability to do that, but because he wanted it to be that way. “He works hard, and the System isn’t out to get him. It’s not out there encouraging S-ranks to pick terrible talents that will make them miserable.”

Look at me, defending Earth System all of a sudden. It had said that the feelings of its Avowed was a factor in its decision making, if not the most important factor.

“You’re probably right. It’ll let you make yourself miserable all day long,” Lute said. “But waving something that isn’t meant to be good and useful in front of high ranks would be a crazy thing for it to do. So Kon’s probably got the sweetest new Adjuster path in a generation. But it’s still not at all what he was planning for. He’s going to have to redo his whole vision board. The glitter hair just won’t work as well without the fist lightning.”

He raised his eyebrows at Alden. “Hey! What’s your superhero outfit going to be?”

“Bunny slippers and a disposable rain poncho. Of course.”

“Perfect!” said Haoyu.

“Handsome,” said Lute.

“It will be.” He walked over to pick up his basket of bananas and the suitcase. “Don’t forget to save me some limbs for decorating.”

Alden stood on the edge of the nonagon, hovering above the sidewalk that connected the Garden Hall dormitories to one of the main campus walkways. He was reassuring the first sky traffic control lady he’d ever spoken to that he would come get a real license to fly the general’s cookie. For sure. He’d pass the test and everything.

He finally received his flight path and was about to take off when someone called his name.

“Alden! Alden Thorn, I’m so happy to have run into you this afternoon!”

He looked down to see a woman standing below him, waving with a brilliant smile on her face. Her skirt had a green, feathery-looking pattern that shimmered in the sunlight. He found himself smiling and waving back before he’d even identified her.

A sunny afternoon, him being in a good mood, and her Appeal made him think, Someone is being nice to me! I’ll be nice back!

Before his memory of the university instructor kicked in, and his thoughts changed to, Oh no. That’s the lady who wants me to dress up in embarrassing costumes and advertise for luxury luggage brands.

Instructor Colibrí kept waving after his own arm had stopped moving.

She said she was happy to run into me, but I’m twenty feet up. That shouldn’t count as running into each other.

“I’m sorry!” he shouted down at her. “I just got my flight path, and I can’t be late. Good to see you!”

He pressed his finger to one of the symbols on the driving ring and extended his hand to take off.

Within a few seconds, the instructor was twirling up into the air in front of him, her arms extended and her skirt flaring. She landed right beside his suitcase, bare feet thumping onto the nonagon’s surface. Shiny red sandals were in one of her hands.

He stared at her

“Caught up!” she said, giving him a curtsy.

“You…did do that. And I’m going like fifty miles an hour right now. Hi, Instructor.”

“You’re off to Matadero again, aren’t you?” Her shoes were already back on, and now her hair was going up in a bun to protect it from the wind.

“Yes. I need to be there soon. For something. Can’t delay.”

“Superb!” said Colibrí. “I need to be on the west side of Apex anyway. We’ll have a quick chat, and I’ll just use Whirlybird to get down. You don’t even have to stop flying!”

Alden was weirded out. This was like a teacher climbing through your car’s sunroof on the freeway, wasn’t it?

Is that okay for her to do? I don’t think it’s normal. But we said hello to each other first, and the Nine-edged Son doesn’t have a roof and doors. Maybe it seems more welcoming of passengers than other vehicles?

Trying to figure out if she was being incredibly rude or if he was being silly occupied him so thoroughly that he missed some of what she said next. When he caught up with her words, they were about his relationship with Esh-erdi and the tour Alden and Haoyu had given of Celena North.

“I know the school would prefer I give some warning next time,” he said. “Principal Saleh told me to call her or—”

“Me!” said Colibrí. “You can always, always call me. First Rabbit in our program! I’m so proud. And an interviewer should take care of her interviewees, shouldn’t she?”

“I thought I was supposed to call the culture advisor if Principal Saleh isn’t available.”

“She’s fine, too,” Colibrí said. “Between you and me, she gets a little bit starstruck around wizards and forgets she’s supposed to be helping Celena North manage its relationship with them instead of pursuing her own interests. She starts geeking out over ancient relics on other planets and forgets to tell them that some of the equipment in our uni Wrightshop is now old enough to qualify as a relic itself!”

She laughed.

Alden upped the nonagon’s speed.

“You know, the Artonans are actually our school’s biggest benefactors when we consider the immeasurable value of the gymnasiums. Oh! That’s right! The generals haven’t toured those yet! If you think they might be interested, we have a maintenance day coming up. It’s scheduled just after finals, the day after our next combat assessment for incoming students. Will you be staying on campus over the holiday?”

“I—”

“Never mind! That’s your business. But let me make a little suggestion. If you could swing by on that day, with or without the generals, I know the wizards who do the checks would be excited to have a student around who appreciated their work. Especially one with your language skills! We do like to thank them for their efforts in every way we can. Plus…”

Her tone somehow turned conspiratorial even though she was having to talk over the wind.

“It’s hours of floor time for anyone who helps them calibrate. I could make sure you have it all to yourself, or you could invite a friend. And I’ll be there, so if you’re in the mood for some tutoring or a workout…there you go!”

Hours of extra floor time was something he wanted, of course. But the way it was being offered was raising his hackles. “Don’t a lot of people probably need that chance? Especially with the way things might go next term. Third years prepping for uni entrance or people having a hard time in their—”

“Don’t worry about that. I wouldn’t offer if it wasn’t fair, would I? Now, about…”

Soon, Alden was itching to try a barrel roll even more than usual. Colibrí had not run into him accidentally; that he was sure of. She had way too many Alden-specific suggestions right on the tip of her tongue. Fortunately, she couldn’t come with him to Matadero, and the flight to the coast wasn’t far. She had to Whirlybird down onto a rooftop as promised.

By then, he understood several things he hadn’t been aware he needed to understand. And he was offended on a few different levels.

Did she think I was too dumb to see what she’s hoping I’ll do for them? Or is what she wants me to do such an ordinary thing in her mind that there’s no reason to float the suggestion my way more subtly?

By the end of their one-sided conversation, all she’d technically told him to do was involve her in any future tours he might give to Artonan visitors. She said she had a job title in addition to being an instructor that made her a relevant contact person. Head of Campus Image. Everything else she’d brought up had been more of a suggestion, but they were strong suggestions, with plenty of hints that the school would scratch his back if he scratched theirs.

He zoomed over the ocean, frowning as he thought about how one of the more innocent-sounding suggestions would play out. Just bring one of the knights on gym maintenance day if you think they’d like a tour, Alden. I’ll be there to chat with them while you practice on the floor.

That was really simple. On the surface. But the ugly layers he could peel off it…

He wondered whether he was being too cynical because she’d reminded him of all the work he’d done to get into a school that had accepted him for reasons unrelated to that work. That still stung; maybe the affront to his pride was affecting his judgment of the situation.

No. She jumped through my sunroof on the freeway. And Lesedi Saleh headed her off on Thanksgiving when she seemed to want to talk to me. It’s sketchy, and the principal must think it’s sketchy…or at least rude as hell.

How long had Colibrí, and others, been thinking of stuff like this? Had it become a plan when he started flying around on the nonagon, or was it before they even let him into school?

He’d thought they accepted him because they were wary about offending the Artonans. Being a bridge to Artonan pocketbooks was worse. It meant his acceptance wasn’t the end of the matter; it was the beginning.

If he played along. And Colibrí seemed confident he wouldn’t object too much to playing along.

I do object.

Can they use my attendance at the school somehow, anyway? Even if I don’t help at all?

He didn’t like that.

He landed on Matadero and left the nonagon in the hangar.

“System, send a message to Drusi-otta,” he said as he set out with his patched suitcase rolling along behind him and his banana basket swinging from the other hand. He switched to Artonan. “Drusi-otta, if you have time to consider a very small concern of mine on behalf of Hn’tyon Lind-otta and Hn’tyon Esh-erdi, I would appreciate part of your future attention. The matter is not urgent. Thank you.”

Don’t know exactly how I’ll put it when she calls me back, he thought as he headed for an elevator. But I’ll tell her what I’m worried about, and then she can insert herself between any inconveniences and the knights if it’s necessary.

Before he could finish telling himself to put it out of his mind, he reached the teleportation area. And stopped in the wide entrance, blinking in surprise.

Esh-erdi and Lind-otta lounged in the middle of the main chamber, on a low wooden sofa topped with thick cushions. As was often the case, his black hair and her paler brown was styled to match each other’s, today in a five-strand braid down their backs. The coats they usually wore as part of their knight uniforms were absent, leaving them both in simple high-necked shirts. They faced each other, Lind-otta smiling behind a raised wevvi cup and Esh-erdi drinking something out of a larger mug.

The beverage was a dark red, as Alden found out almost at once. He hadn’t finished taking in the sight of the two knights before Esh-erdi was on his feet and standing inches away from him in what looked like a single impossible step.

Alden clutched his basket and suitcase handles harder. Behind Esh-erdi, the mug he’d abandoned fell toward the sofa in barely discernible slow motion, a fan of red liquid spilling from its rim.

“Hn’tyon Esh-erdi, what—”

“What is the matter of universal concern?” the knight demanded, his face  intent. “This is now <<a shared emergency>>. I will bring all my authority to bear for the cause—”

“No!” Alden gasped. “Did I say something wrong in my message? I’m sorry! It’s not an emergency! There’s no emer—”

“Your enemies will die before I do, young Avowed, and—”

“Too much, Esh,” Lind-otta said gently.

“My very blood will stain the ground as I chase the—!”

“I said we could tease him a little, not frighten him.”

“What’s going on?” Alden looked from one to the other frantically.

“Hello, Alden Ryeh-b’t,” Lind-otta said from the sofa. “Esh wanted to be funny, but he’s bad at it.”

Her voice and her expression made it impossible to believe she thought anything about Esh-erdi was bad. There were warm vibes in the room so strong they almost felt solid to Alden.

Esh-erdi turned to pout at his partner.

Lind-otta laughed.

Esh-erdi laughed.

The warm vibes laughed with them.

Alden froze, his grip on his luggage suddenly weak compared to his grip on himself.

Those vibes aren’t vibes. They’re a thing going on for real. Near him but not about him, like the echo of someone else’s shout.

He swallowed, feeling exposed even though nothing was interacting with him as far as he could tell. It wasn’t like being targeted by another Avowed or having a spell used on him.

Think. What is this? Is it dangerous to me? To my secrets?

The knights were as happy and relaxed as he’d ever seen them. Out of uniform and having drinks together on a sofa that would have a big red stain on it in a few hours at the rate Esh-erdi’s drink was falling.

They’re making the vibes? He thought that must be it—something happening between their two existences. Wizard children did the pat-pat control exercises with their learning partners. Zeridee-und’h could let out a distress call. Alis-art’h had surrounded Alden with her authority and kept him from destroying himself at her travel dome. Now there was this.

And I’m noticing because whatever they’re doing is really big. Unless it’s super basic like the learning partner pat and they’re so powerful it’s making it ridiculous.

They were clearly in a good mood.

Could this be part of their esvulgivnas and the “breaking selves together” thing?

He was staring at them like a deer in headlights. They were going to think Esh-erdi’s joking had traumatized him if he didn’t say something normal soon.

He went with, “Is that the couch from your rooms?” The teleportation area at Matadero had never had furniture in it before.

“Yes!” Esh-erdi said. “It’s fortunate I asked Drusi to send all of your requests directly to me. With her help and your Contract’s we were able to arrive down here before you without even leaving our seats.”

Alden felt his panic smile easing into a real one as he realized these two weren’t just happy. They were so happy they’d gotten silly. They’d asked the Earth System to teleport the sofa they were on.

It was only down a few floors into a literal teleportation zone, but still…

“Are you all right, Alden?” Lind-otta asked.

“I am.”

“Come sit with us!” Esh-erdi led the way over to the furniture, where he scooped his mug out of the air and his drink into the mug with a couple of swoops of his arm. “Talk until you are summoned away to whatever brings you here. Healing? A social visit? You have many bananas with you. This cushion is best. Sit on this one.”

This is really going to confuse anyone who teleports in.

He took the cushion Esh-erdi had just left while the knight seated himself in the middle. The vibes that were more solid than vibes were fading.

“I really don’t have something important enough to bother either of you with if you’re busy.”

“Minor problems can be as satisfying to solve as large ones,” Lind-otta said.

“And we’re always busy,” Esh-erdi added. “But until sunrise tomorrow, we’ve decided to be busy with what pleases us. Nothing has sunk anywhere on Earth in days! Actually, I’m sure many things have sunk, but nothing has sunk unexpectedly due to the <<spillage>> of magical devices for which we’re responsible.”

That was a good reason to celebrate.

“I was only calling Drusi-otta to tell her…”

He didn’t have what he wanted to convey all smoothed for presentation yet. But they were waiting, and the invite from Emban would be coming. And if Instructor Colibrí could be so blatant about what the school wanted from Alden, then why shouldn’t he be forthcoming about what he thought of it?

“I think my school has hopes that wizards will give them extra magical equipment and support because I’m a student there. Because of the commendation and other things.”

“Do you lack something necessary for your education?” Lind-otta asked.

“No,” Alden said, brushing off a thought about how much he’d like to have some more video lessons from Instructor Gwen-lor’s class. “Of course there are always things that could be made closer to perfection.”

“An endless pursuit.” Lind-otta nodded.

“But I’m not asking you or any other wizards to give large gifts to Celena North. So if anyone ever says that I am, or if they suggest that I’m having difficulties in a class that can only be fixed with an improvement to our magical buildings or very expensive supplies, they’re…mistaken.” He felt that the word mistaken was a charitable concession on his part. “I’m not sure anyone will actually make that mistake, but if they do, in front of you, now you’ll know they’re incorrect. That was all I wanted to say.”

“What about small gifts?” Esh-erdi was twiddling his fingers against his mug. “Do you want any small gifts for yourself?”

“You’ve given me a lot. Even if we don’t include you saving my life, and I think we should include that. Also, Olorn-art’h gifted me an earring she made that helps me focus and enjoy instruction. So my education has been improved beyond my expectations already.” Realizing that praise was insufficient, he added, “It’s a wonderful earring.”

“She gave you the work of her own hands! Lind, I told you I wasn’t being <<overwhelming>> by providing him with a few necessities.” He settled deeper into his section of the sofa, looked thoughtfully at his partner, then said, “Alden, where do you go from here?”

“A Here-to-There with Hn’tyon Emban-art’h.”

A thrilled-sounding whistle came from Lind-otta. “A Here-to-There! They were so common in my youth that a wizard would occasionally be caught in an <<unchaperoned>> one by accident and gain an unlooked-for task. I haven’t been to one in so long.”

“I’ll be going to help Stu. Emban is bringing two members of her squad. I don’t know much about what’s happening, so I’ll… ” A good word for tag along wasn’t coming to mind. “Be casual and polite company however I can.”

“Don’t be soft-voiced during the <<challenging>> and the announcing,” Esh-erdi said. “Shout as loud as you can. As loud as your best croak!”

Alden watched the knight sip the red drink, trying to tell by his face if this was a prank attempt or legitimate advice. When he couldn’t be sure, he looked to Lind-otta.

She had a placid, competent way about her when she wasn’t ritually starting off a meal by cracking turkey bones with her jaws.

“Why are you looking at her like that? Lind! Do you see this? The human child doubts my advice!”

“Of course I don’t doubt,” Alden said. “I was just wondering if she had advice, too.”

Lind-otta laid one of her hands against Esh-erdi’s arm. To Alden, she said, “Be patient with our young siblings <<of circumstance>> if they’re <<moody>> right now. And don’t expect them to be as knowledgable and proper as a fully diplomaed wizard even if they now have many of the privileges of one.”

“I’ll keep that in my thoughts.”

“I have heard your best croak,” she added, her eyes alight. “That volume will be adequate for the challenging and the announcing.”

Esh-erdi grinned.

“Oh… thank you…he really did share that with you. I’ve been recorded. Good. That’s good.”

“You seem to be better at turning pink than most humans I’ve met,” Esh-erdi said in an innocent tone that was definitely faked.

“It’s one of my many talents…and there’s my invitation to the first Rapport! I shouldn’t make Emban-art’h wait.”

The teleportation invite actually came from Evul, so he assumed it was really Stuart with his sister’s tablet again.

“Go,” said Lind-otta. “Thank you for tolerating Esh.”

“What about me must be tolerated?”

Alden stood.

“Don’t worry about us hearing the requests of your elders and thinking they speak in the voice of your own desires,” Esh-erdi said more seriously. “This  truly is a small matter, if it happens. And it is neither surprising nor offensive to us, if you worried it would be so.”

“All right.” Alden bent to pick up the basket.

“We should talk about how Alis’s commendation is regarded, perhaps. When you’re ready to have that longer conversation with me and deal with the matter of the secrecy contract for this place.”

“Whenever you want,” Alden said. “Whenever is convenient for you.”

“Send me a list of days and nights that are easy for you,” Esh-erdi countered. “And I will choose one. Not immediately after one of your meetings with the healer, though.”

“I’ll send you as many options as I can.”

Alden stepped into one of the smaller alcoves that surrounded the central chamber. Seconds later, he was on Artona I.

“He’s a sincere person,” Lind-otta said.

They were back in their sitting room, still on the sofa.

“He is.”

“Jeneth’s youngest is also sincere.”

“Yes.” Esh-erdi set his empty mug on the armrest beside him. “I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.”

Notes:
******

Colibrí -- She's one who uses her old hero name instead of her birth name. It means hummingbird. Was in charge of making sure Alden attended CNH, or CNU if his interview didn't go well at all. Helps uni students craft hero personas and come up with marketing schemes. Whatever we may think of her other opinions, let's be honest; the Rabbit could make a great suitcase commercial.

The Bromeliad -- Still alive, despite having been stolen from the Amazon by Haoyu.

Drusi-otta -- Votary to Lind-otta. Which means she gets to deal with Esh, too.

Gwen-lor -- Will she ever learn that she taught a human teenager wizardry through those lessons she sent Kibby?

Zeridee-und'h -- Assistant to the Artonan ambassador. Not an old male butler despite what some people may assume upon first meeting her. The 'h on the end of her last name is pronounced the same as the 'h on the end of art'h. Basically a quick short exhale.

Jeneth -- Jeneth-art'h. Primary.

Emban-art'h -- Definer of Grooves. Stuart's cousin. The Primary and Alis are her granduncle/grandaunt. Her parents do not live in the siblinghold, but she came to live there when she was younger. Current plans include this Here-to-There thing. Also, she's been seen working on this:

***

“I’m going to make a card for every guest at my parents’ Summersending feast. Someone is sure to say, ‘The cards are almost too beautiful to burn this year!” Emban’s eyes lit. “And I’ll say, ‘I made them for you with my own hands. Every line has been touched with my thoughts on the importance of sacrifice. Think of me as you burn them.’”

Emban picked up another brush.

Eventually, Evul said, “So the thing that’s going to keep you motivated over the coming days is adding a coat of misery to a Summersending ceremony?”

“I’m only adding a coat of perspective. If misery is the result…” Emban shrugged.

Alden -- Currently asleep in habitat, claws curled around the remains of a beetle

Human Alden --
Currently awake. Not sure what natural habitat is anymore but getting casual fast about swapping between the Anesidora one and the Artonan one.

On his way to a Here-to-There.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Sleyca, am I your favorite commenter? Also, could you please confirm if we will eventually see Alden use his auriad to somehow blow Hazel up in spectacular fashion, as well as Marsha, Marks, Winston, and Ro-den?

The Human

Like a karmic reward for doing some housework

John Anastacio

Been wondering when Colibri's plan for Alden was going to manifest. Good timing, I guess. Better after a deluge than before.

Emily Curtis

I'm glad Alden is doing alright. And Human Alden too I suppose.

puppy0cam

> The teleportation invite actually came from Evul, so he assumed it was really Stuart with his sister’s tablet again. That seems like an incorrect assumption? It's only the calls where Stu needs to pretend to be Evul to the system. He can invite Alden as a guest of the house directly now right?

on the upside

you made me smile *loudly* in a public place, curse you for your skills

Jessica Pepe

Celebrating Bromelimas around the bromeliad with the brofamily.

cafenacet

I know the System is a giant hodgepodge of compromises, but one thing that comes up a lot is the lack of choice a lot of Avowed get, and I'm just comparing it to how mad Stu was on Alden's behalf about his lack of Choosing Season. And we have Kon feeling lackluster and then jumping on a new path, Lute getting tricked into it and taking his second S mostly on a whim, Haoyu not getting his S, and so on. I think Stu would empathize with them a lot. Be funny if he becomes a big advocate for changing how Earth affixations work.

Austin

God I love Esh

blinkmouse

Ty for the chappie!

Sébastien Kingsbury

I love those two knights, definitely some of the best characters in a series that has a lot of good characters

Listerine

I see a new warrior has entered the tub privileges brawl... I don't think Kon will win any but it's funny he's trying. I assumed that the Gym Crunch would spur on some of CNH to view Alden as a potential solution, but I didn't expect it to be that rapid or that blatant. It's interesting seeing Colibri's mixture of high Appeal and high confidence bulldozing over Alden a bit. Getting requests to Drusi sent directly to them is definitely something Esh would do, hah. He's trying to break the casual barrier with Alden and doing it pretty decently! I'm pleased Lind is confirmed to see the Croak. I wonder if the effect of high Appeal is something sufficiently skilled wizards can create with their free authority? I'm happy that Alden and Stu are seen as equally sincere... it's cute. I get the feeling that gifts of educational magical equipment aren't something that Esh, currently giving Tiny Snake a top tier living space, is necessarily opposed to. But Alden's thoughtfulness is probably part of why he feels that way about it. And having Alden put in that position is stressful and possibly annoys him. Talking about the Alis Commendation soon, woohoo! And I'm still curious about what the tattooing for Alden will be like and what it'll cover and where it'll be. It would blend better near the triangle of secrecy, but I think mixing Matadero secrecy with all his complex and unpleasant feelings about Joe is a bad call.

BatheticBoy

They know... they definitely know.... But is Alden's sincerity at risk of revealing something about Stuart? Alden definitely knows a big secret about him, but it's not obvious to me what he might be at risk of revealing. Unless maybe they were referring to Alden potentially being a catalyst of conflict between Stuart and his family re. his decision to be a knight. Or his role in firming Stuarts resolve to stick to his decision.

J Reynolds

So Kon is still deflecting. Esh is a really good friend. Lots of goofiness. I can see that he could really put the frighteners on someone if he had to, though.

Caerold

Thank you so much for the post chapter reminders on character names, relationships, etc! It’s very easy to forget something like the origin of the Bro-tree

Gaffer

I haven’t laughed out loud so often during a single chapter before. Good lord.

Aspiring Moth

the notification appeared just as I was about to go to sleep, but that was a good chapter so no regrets

Robert Mullins

And this is why I didn't like colibri from the start. She was only interested in accepting Alden because of how it affected the school and not because of how the school could affect Alden. Unlike Torsten who immediately focused in on what the school could (or rather couldn't) do for Alden and rejected him on that basis.

WindGunner

Oh oh, that last part haste worried.

Primatus S

Teleporting the whole couch really cracked me up 🤣

Baines

if anyone other than mother knows at this point it is them, some weird shit had to be going down when Esh saved him, I’ll someday we’ll get that event from another prospective

JJ Hunter

I love them all, your honor. Felt the good vibes laughing with Esh and Lind so viscerally. They teleported WITH THEIR COUCH: amazing, iconic, absolutely what I would use System assist for after getting mildly sloshed. Esh is SO READY to be fairy godfather and he keeps getting thwarted by this child's sincere humility! Can he see some of Alden's cracks are mending towards less tender than they were? Is Alden safer to tease more overtly now, like Mother assessed Emban sufficiently recovered to boink! into a mild papercraft prank and the far more piercing pleasure of Stu laughing again?

denatured

Haha do you think Evul and Emban are tricking Alden into a surprise? Cute.

Amber Gregory

Ooh, authority partner "vibes". When love has an actual presence. Whenever I get a soup notification I know my day is about to get better and more wholesome, but it's extra nice to get a real cackle of a laugh out as well. Resuming day feeling considerably more at peace...

Matt DiMeo

i doubt that h can send a teleport request to someone he isn’t even allowed to text. He has cultural/traditional rights with the hospitality of the house, but not legal rights to bring in avowed.

puppy0cam

Chapter 151 (Tenderroot): > About a minute later, the official invitation to visit Rapport I arrived. Alden had been a little worried that it would look like a summons, complete with payment and a timer. But it was an image of a handwritten letter from Stuart, hovering in front of him while the System translated the writing into English. > > > > Samuel Alden Thorn of Earth, > > Welcoming you as my guest would bring me happiness. Our household would be enlivened by your presence for a day or a year. Our fires are warm, and our bowls are full. > > I await your answer in the house of Jeneth-art’h. > > Being his son, and of age to offer the house’s welcome, > > Sina Stu-art’h > > It was followed by a teleportation offer. No timer.

PeasOfCrab

Excellent. Lind and Esh and soon to be even more Esh yet! Tolerate his presence? No, no. How shall I tolerate his absence?

Diego

Esh is the coolest. I hope Alden gives him a tour of the gym and Esh uses the opportunity to prank CN authorities.

Armo

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

Adamanus

Despite Alden's protestations, I think the administration's plan for getting more upgrades from the wizards will work. They really won't see it as a big deal to do a bit more for a commended one.

Jean

I love the notes about Alden and Human Alden at the end.

JJR Killjoy

“Your enemies will die before I do, young Avowed, and—” This absolutely killed me. I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Thanks!

Caleb Hughes

Esh-erdi and Lind-otta are really awesome, perfect duo. They make me smile every time they show up 😁

BeautifulBusinessBoi

The Lind and Esh comedy duo is so potent, the world shapes around it lol

Ashdar

Speaking as someone who will occasionally go way to far, way to fast. Esh had a beautiful joke there.

PatienceHoney

@Denatured Wow... how... just how??? Several months ago I received an award for predicting part of the chapter. I now pass that award on to you. 👏... 👏 ... 👏...

PatienceHoney

Is a "loud" smile a laugh? Cause, yeah, I did that too. But, I was luckily in a private space, because I was laughing like a loon.

Shmooggie

Esh has to be my favourite character

Kooikerhondjelover

Tftc. Sometimes it is nice to have to get up in the middle of the night ( Monday here) to take care of your puppies - such a nice surprise! However now we need to wait another full week until we learn more. I really like Esh. Him trying so hard to make Alden relax. Love it.

Glitter Rabbit (C)

In her defence, and I disliked her behaviour in this chapter as well, she clearly came up with a hero persona that could work for Alden. She did have his career/marketability for hero work in mind. Still, this left a bitter taste in my mouth. I really like(d) Colibri

Robert Mullins

Esh and Lind should go on that tour with the school representative and nod along and smile at all the right points. Then at the end say: "I hear your concerns and I understand completely. The young rabbit has gone through too much to suffer from such an easily fixable flaw of circumstance. Allow me to set him up as a member at a gym on Artona 1 and we will ensure he has 24/7 access to a properly equipped gym to handle those matters that aren't suitable for your equipment."

Obran

Alden would be a great in a commercial for energizer batteries, if we are talking commercials, just saying

Andrew Tobin

Oh yeah, Alden, you rip away Stu's shade leaves. What.... you're the one who's strange, not me!

Kemlion

Tftc, love how Alden is the real Alden and human Alden is just the secondary Alden

jg

What a wonderful advice for balancing truth telling with sensitivity with a floral metaphor!

Andrew Tobin

She very clearly has a different motive than Alden. And its a shame she had no concern for working with Alden, his wants, or any of that. Its not unusual though - and I deal with folks like that a lot. Heck, I'm not sure I'm not only focused on myself too much.

Andrew Tobin

A lot of people are commenting on the Esh of things so, just to add... Poor Jupiter. People are doing pruning without her. I'm pretty sure she could have gotten the bromelaid into the festive spirit! It's interesting how Kon came off. Not really surprising, but even Hayou didn't see that side of him, or didn't voice anything about it. I know Lexi is probably very aware of it, but I hope he lets Everly see that side of him. It's nice that there's a Kon who knows how to deal with his doubts, insecurities, who blows off the backlash of putting on the happy face all the time, in what seems to be a very mature way. And then rebounds with an assault on the claw-foot tub! You go, Kon!

David

What a delightful chapter! Esh never fails to make me laugh, but I haven’t been this amused in *a while*. Lind adds so much. That ending is rather ominous, isn’t it? I get the impression that our favorite Rabbit’s quiet days are running out…

BeepBoop

I wonder if the shade and harsh light refer to the impact as the two learn more about each other in their own relationship (which would be prescient given Alden's situation) or about concern over the reaction of independent third parties as to what the two reveal in their sincerity. Both seem plausible.

Einander

Luna Plim and Colibri have been in a sort of vague shared space of "quirky adult enthusiastic about the exciting new opportunities presented by this interesting young Rabbit." And now I will definitely never group them together in my head again. Brrr. You really got across the icky, faintly violated feeling of when someone uses your own politeness to trample all over your boundaries.

SammyVeeee

Trying to piece together the tiniest crumbs of U type lore. Again Previous assumption/headcanon- u types are the systems way of dealing with those with high chaos potential Previous assumption-the relatively predictable heritability of avowed potential means that children on Anesdoria have high chaos potential and have not yet been stabilized by affixing The evacuation priorities during the sinker sender incident(with a minor risk of chaos exposure) seemed to support the idea that removing the high chaos potential children was important. New information-u types are somehow rarer among anesdoroa raised avowed than out in the wild. So u types are even weirder than I thought, or something about Anesdoria itself makes the system not affix u types there.

Lola

I was happen to hear about Alden and human Alden, but it made me miss Kibby even more 🥺

William Johnson

Yay an update on other Alden! I imagine they make super cute little snore noises. The knights continue to be the chillest of dudes. Thanks for the chapter!

Garrett

I feel like a U type skill might be the result of the system trying to fit a skill onto someone whose authority has already been partially and organically shaped by their environment/life experiences. The system needs to adapt to the changes that already occurred unsupervised by itself, resulting in odd, custom skills. It might be that the passive magical pressure given off by other avowed keeps the authority of Anesidoran children from undergoing that change.

LordJJJ

Crazy thought. What if the skill Kon has is also a OG broken skill like Alden's, with no upper limit. 1of1 and he is totally justified in picking it 👀

Robert Mullins

That's a theory that's popped up a lot in the discord, partially due to the name matching the pattern we see with others and partially due to the way esh stared at the mashed potatoes that were recovered after being dropped on the floor.

DAK

Yeah, the Anesidoran rarity of U is very interesting. They’re the ones who most often become hyperboles, and based on lots of different convos with Mother, I think we can conclude this means they have big, open ended skills. Boe was allowed to tell Alden ‘I’m random’ and nothing else about his affixation. He also may have affixed just before Alden or way back at age 11. It certainly does seem like U is a bad System patch of whatever-works for an impending affinity chaos event. Agree with Sammy that being around other magic users might better stabilize affinity, thus keeping the island kids safer. It might also explain how everyone still assumes the youngest affixation is late 14.

Anthony Lutz

I personally doubt it, the skill is Reader of Records, but the skill is not what reverts time (yet?), it's a seperate spell impression Revert to Reading that does that. Knight skills seem to be all encompassing and not require external features to function.

Robert Mullins

I like how Alden actually noticed and thought about how strange it was that he was defending the earth contract in this chapter.

SnuggleCat

I didn't realize how much I missed Esh until he showed up. And holy cow he and Lind are the cutest couple.

DAK

Yeah, Lind (or both) holding onto Alden’s authority and basically daring him to magically breathe at all was great. She sensed him basically going ‘eep’ halfway across the island before the flood. There’s no way she doesn’t recognize him while holding him in a big authority hug here.

Jason Harpster

“All members of the huntksi lodge are brothers on Bromelimas,” Haoyu announced. “All bros must ornament the tree or else.” Huntski? Also.....OMG weird slightly rude people just keep kidnapping Alden for car rides. 🤣

Glitter Rabbit (C)

She did the same thing as Klein, work with Alden in the capacity as an instructor. She is the hero persona person. She had already two ideas for Alden. She took his ambitions seriously enough to do her job. The fact that she is playing the resource game is just a manifestation of certain realities. We saw two chapters ago that he school has very limited resources for all the students. Of course they'd want more. They are struggling to make ends meet properly. Doesn't make it less bitter but it isn't worse than Klein's (and the whole school's) elitism. In my opinion...

DAK

Hunting and/or skiing lodge. They mushed the theme and the name together

DAK

This series has such great depth to its characters. But Colibrí was exactly who I was expecting her to be here…

SnuggleCat

They're just what Alden needs around, too. Competent, caring adults.

JennP

When Sleyca decides to publish and starts to sell merch will we finaly get to buy our own little red Alden plushies? Because I need one. Or two.

Guindolin

So was the vibe Alden was feeling so physically… was it Esh and Lind’s authority?

SnuggleCat

Ah yes, there goes the famous hero in his bunny slippers and poncho. What a handsome and perfect outfit!

Jeff Wells

I think it's the newer class of more powerful, but not broken, skills. It was previously stated that there is much debate on how the skills should be designed, and I think there is a current swing back to loosening restrictions. Nobody is trying to make new unlimited skills though.

PatienceHoney

@PeasOfCrab In response to PuppyOCam's comment requesting Chapter Predilictions, Denatured responded, "I want a canon explanation of esvulgivnas. Let's have some Matadero time and a solid chat with the knights-in-residence." Seriously good psychic skills! Or super lucky... @Denatured Go get a lottery ticket so that we can determine if you are skilled or lucky!!

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

“I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.” but YO

PatienceHoney

I bought a soft little white bunny plushie and named it Alden. I think that is the closest I am going to get for a while...

Gaming with Bigby

Part of me is somewhat sad Alden only THOUGHT about doing a barrel roll.

Adunk

I’m really looking forward to the Artonan chapters upcoming, along with the inevitable reveal of Alden’s skill to at least Esh and Lind. Plus all the stuff around that. That said, I’m also hoping for a time skip, maybe a significant one, before too terribly long. The school parts are starting to drag a bit in my mind. The constant low rank power highlighting/bemoaning is… getting stale. I’m worried that half the story will be about Alden being dumped on for being a proverbial ant while the high power knight-ness he will become gets glossed over with like 10% of the final chapters, lacking the same depth of exploration. I’ve seen a lot of books like that, so I’m always wary of “you’re trash now but it will eventually pay off I promise” as a theme these days. I see amazing potential in SupSup to explore some of those higher power, higher responsibility themes that a lot of stories treat as just a prize to be won, rather than a complex situation of their own.

Nyroe

DO THEY KNOW???!!!?!?! I know they felt the fist-bump to the universe, BUT DO THEY KNOW??!!

Marcia McGinley

So we get two chapters revealing all the angst that Li Jean's program is causing; and then a chapter that every so lightly suggests that Alden has the influence to get CNH some nice upgrades. I like CNH. I like the vibe and the interplay between the students. Not to reward Colibri's behaviour of course, but I wouldn't mind CNH being the beneficiary of some really cool stuff that has Li Jean looking like the poor relation.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I so wanted Alden to say "Thank you for the advice. I'm doing a barrel roll maneuver now, that I logged onto my flight plan and so am obligated to complete." I hope someday Alden gets his barrel roll and loop-de-loops.

VP

And you can't really fault her. She genuinely thinks this is the best way to help the school. If Alden was genuinely a rabbit trying to become a hero, he would have probably helped because of the whole I scratch your back, you scratch mine

David

I read it as resonance between their authorities which have been artificially joined/brought into close proximity. Also, I imagine it’s like having two very large boats docked together. You really don’t want to be between them when a wave passes by, whatever a wave represents in this analogy.

Andrew Simpson

Just a vibes chapter I guess

Gregory

By Red Alden you of course mean human Alden in his first protective Wardrobe outfit, right? All ready to defuse bombs and survive demons!

Gregory

Hey, the Earth contract has a generally laudable goal. It's just a) kinda dopey, b) not great at adapting, and c) absolutely unused to the needs of a knight-ish person.

Gregory

I think people making assumptions based on the name is unwise, because Bearer had its name actively obfuscated into "Let Me Take Your Luggage" and why would they only obfuscate some? Unless that was a result of the Artonan internal conflict and the pro-avowed side snuck that one through.

Kahandran

Stop! Stop making me feel warm fuzzies from alien-god-wizards! And stop crawling through Alden's sunroof, pushy people!

Gregory

Seems unlikely that Esh and Lind would go along with it because Alden would probably be unhappy/confused if they did, but who knows what the other wizards will do. Though Lind-otta's comment that she needs to talk to Alden about how the commendation is seen may mean that we really don't have full context.

Gregory

I don't think Alden's Matadero tattoo needs to blend at all. He wanted the Joe secrecy tattoo to be concealed because he didn't want to talk to people about why he had a secrecy contract or any of that. On the other hand, the fact that Matadero requires secrecy and the fact that Alden has gone there are both extremely public information - it's not shameful or worth hiding, really. The only question it would raise, if seen in a visible place, is why he didn't get it sooner.

BelligerentGnu

“Yes.” Esh-erdi set his empty mug on the armrest beside him. “I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.” This line has me so very hyped. FUCK YOU, JOE! THE SECRET IS OUT!

Gregory

Haoyu's non-S feels like a somewhat different category - it feels like people's ranks are at least somewhat based on objective evaluation. The Kon one is interesting - we know the system has various reasons for introducing new abilities, generally due to Artonan needs, but specifically giving it to Kon could have been arbitrary or could be because the System knew that he wasn't excited about his previously chosen path.

Gregory

Poor Colibri has extensively studied PR, presumably. But she clearly hasn't studied the knights (probably hard to do, honestly, they do value privacy) and she really hasn't studied Alden at all. Which is far less excusable, there were like 7 CNH people she could have talked to who would have told her not to this. Frankly she probably knew they'd say that (hence not asking) but was extremely wrong about why it was a dumb plan. Really, even without this conversation if Colibri or other CNH/U personnel had tried to leverage Alden with the knights it wouldn't have gone to plan, because it's really not hard for anyone to predict what Alden would actually think about this.

Gregory

I wonder if Stuart has any metaphorical Shade Leaves left. It feels like he's been extremely open with Alden. Alden, of course, has plenty, and it's a really good question how much they know or suspect.

Anthony Lutz

They do have some clues to suspect something, - they know someone did a kindergarten authority pat to no-one - they know alden can use his skill via authority because he held zeridee, however they also know that alden (at least at the time) did not believe his skill could be used with authority, its possible that's just ignored as crisis skill usage. - his knowledge of hn'tyons binding authority is assumed kibby told him even if they suspect authority sense, they still wouldn't know how relatively advanced he is, or that his skill is BOAB, because Mother gave him a fake system profile that is lying to everyone, even artonans.

Guus van der Borg

My current take on U types is that they were people that were somehow on the verge of demonizing. That probably already set their authority in some kind of way the system needs to work around, and it would explain the urgency to do it without consent.

Guus van der Borg

I'm looking forward to Alden hearing exactly how special his commendation is. I bet his reaction will be interesting. Maybe he'll even achieve new hights in pinkness! Cultivate your talents!

Gregory

It might be less about how special the commendation is and more about how he should expect Artonans to behave about it. So for example she may explain that no one will summon him for anything dangerous, which Stuart already told him.

Guus van der Borg

Oh, no doubt it won't be the main topic of the discussion. But I would be VERY surprised if it wasn't a part of it. And I think Alden will have a very strong reaction to it. (Provided the comment section's theories about it being the Artonan equivalent to a Medal of Honor are true of course.)

Guus van der Borg

That explains a lot. :) I was definitely surprised the first comment had such a block of text. I was gonna ask you to teach me your secrets of getting the chapter early. :)

Fabian

Didn't expect THAT to drive a wedge between CNH and Alden. Way to pave the way for "favorite rabbit visiting Li'Jean!". No wonder people tried to keep Her away from Alden. I wouldn't take the additional gym time due to the icky strings attached. > They faced each other, Lind-otta smiling behind a raised wevvi cup and Esh-erdi drinking something out of a larger mug. "Its an ambush. Its totally an ambush. We are doomed! Abort! Abort! !Abort!" > It’s fortunate I asked Drusi to send all of your requests directly to me. "The betrayal! I was not warned! We will remember. More cookies!" > With her help and your Contract’s we were able to arrive down here before you without even leaving our seats. Seems the Contracts allow Generals any expenditure. Anything to make them happy. The Contracts are probably the most aware of the strain the Generals feel. The amount of authority they bind needing happy memories to counteract. The weight they have. > They were so common in my youth that a wizard would occasionally be caught in an <> one by accident and gain an unlooked-for task. Yes. THAT is awfully specific. We don't want any specifics. Totally not! Yes! we want specifics, but a summary is fine too. > You’ve given me a lot. Even if we don’t include you saving my life, and I think we should include that. Also, Olorn-art’h gifted me an earring she made that helps me focus and enjoy instruction. So my education has been improved beyond my expectations already. Smooth way to remind people how good gifts by other people turned out. Totally not to get such a gift myself. Totally not.

ThoMiCroN

esvulgivnas?

Anthony Lutz

It's something that has not been explicitly explained. It's a "honeymoon" between two people who have "broken themselves together". Edit to expand: while the fan theory is affixing together, we don't know what that really means. Eg, Emban has affixed with her squad mates but this is not an esvulgivnas. I think its more of a soul bond kind of thing, as in this chapter they are very much acting a couple, and in CH119 I got the impression they were linked somehow from lind "did not feel alone" then esh "ive never been more aware of your presence". So I think its a Hn'tyon level marriage kind of thing.

WannaBeATree

Good thing then, that one of those people has been complimented multiple times on their maturity. Well, Alden also told Stu that he is rethinking if Stu realy is less mature than him or not. I also didn't get the impression, that the knights found out Alden's secrets. At all. It only sounds like they do, if you asume they already know, but not otherwise, so it doesn't work as a clue.

Jack

Again a really good chapter! I love getting a direct continuation of what happened the other day, and more secondhand Kon. Im a bit sad Colibrí rubs Alden the wrong way, I like her overall. Excited to see what happens next!

Nathan

Thanks Sleyca!

puppy0cam

> Bromelimas I wonder how the contract would choose to translate that if Stu happened to be listening to the conversation. Would it have just been << untranslatable >> Maybe it would be << A combination of two words in reference to a plant and a cultural celebration >> Na, it would probably just be << A made up word invented less than an hour ago >>

Catherine

This ‘parade’ has challenges. I’m so looking forward to finding out what a Here to There actually entails!

Guus van der Borg

“Or else what?” Well, if you reject the offer of Brotherhood on Bromelimas, you deserve whatever is coming to you, I have decided.

Endaris

I think this is because she belongs to CNU primarily. In the faculty meeting about elites we saw before it was relatively clear that CNH was facing pressure to change floor time allocations primarily from CNU, so I guess there is a power dynamic here that gives CNU more agency and some sway over CNH. ...This expression sounds way too ominous in a Super Supportive context. Given that this had been Colibrí's plan from the interview and her/CNU were actually pressing for his acceptance to the degree they would have invited him to CNU if CNH did not take him, it's safe to say that she does not care and does not have to care what CNH thinks about this. Or differently said: CNU is as unscrupulously fishing for advantages over their competition as Li Jean is with their current move. It is not surprising they would try to leverage him after the pressure Li Jean's stunt put them under.

Clint

I have this sinking feeling that Esh and Lind are going to visit the CNH administrators while Alden is off world. I can’t quite picture how that will go, but perhaps it might start with a discussion of the seriousness of them being entrusted with Alden’s education and somehow end up with massive changes that Colibri did not anticipate or desire. Alden might not be the only one getting a discussion of the importance of his commendation.

Mqrius

<< Newly invented holiday combining elements of a traditional pagan celebration with the virtues of friendship >>

Alibhai

While I can certainly how Colibri's actions might have unintended consequences. I don't see the Knights creating spectacle. They are respectable, high-ranking individuals who know when to be subtle.

Alibhai

Alden is a very private person, so it is easy to see how someone intruding on his personal space might give him a negative opinion of that individual.

Alibhai

What secret? Alden's magic? I don't think anyone knows about it apart from Boe and the systems.

J Reynolds

Instructor Colibrí (through clenched teeth) : That sounds wonderful.

MatrixM

That was such a poetic phrasing in the last paragraph. It's a good point that I'm not sure I entirely agree with in its implication of the extent of the dangers of sharing too much too soon. But I very much appreciate its phrasing and the compassion with which the words come. They're two of the characters that make me the most excited atm, tbh. When they randomly appeared in the TC I instantly liked the chapter more. I only JUST realised with that line in the Human Alden notes: Human Alden is slowly being shaped to acclimate to a Rapport/Hn'tyon habitat, such that he won't feel so out of place when he goes public as a Hn'tyon. It felt so SO natural and gradual that I didn't realise this is probably yet another reason Mother has arranged all of this... (in a hands-off 'I know how all of my children will behave given certain prompts/guidance' way.... makes her seem kinda like a God when you put it like that, ala 'how we have free will but a predetermined destiny is because God knows us so well'...)

Adunn

Not really seeing an issue with the Colibri situation tbh.

MatrixM

Yeah her current requests are something I think Alden should agree with, now that he's spoken to Lind and Esh. I think the concern is in any future requests that will ask for more. But at present, Alden SHOULD now take Esh'edri to the gym that day. 1. He already planned to show him the gym when it was free. So it's something he's going to do and this way... 2. He'll get something out of it. 3. He's now told Esh that any requests from Colibri should be considered completely separately from Alden. 4. He can always turn down any further requests.

MatrixM

It's making me imagine a kinda rpg-like quest chain. Like a forest that's fitted with gym-like spells and illusions :p Scattered throughout the world, formerly to such a degree that some wizards would stumble upon them. Like a (game) dungeon but safe and geared to teaching through its challenges.

denatured

Stu also has a talent! He is very good at turning purple!

Faiir

I don't want Alden to hurry to OP status. I like small scale, personal conflicts we have

Reincheck

Colibri does have designs on using Alden's Artonan connections for the sake of the school and it's making him uncomfortable however I really like her energy and she seems really sincere on her part that she's proud of Alden getting into CNH. The chapter got even more better with Esh and Lind. Alden's croak is now immortalized. Lol.

Norlum

That last bit sounds suspicious. Like they know he's a knight.

Ano Ano

Extremely good chapter. Strikes me as a good show of how this story tends to be well paced even though it's so slow. There are so many small details that are clearly little set ups. Short term promises about how the here to there will be more boisterous than Alden was thinking, a long with longer term promises for finding outabout how knight and wizard culture has changed. (They used to be super common, but not anymore. Why?) Stuff about superlatives, about gym maintenance, about roommate shenanigans, about a serious talk and a secrecy contract with Esh. Beautiful. Also, fuck Colibri. All my homies hate her.

Francis

I think so too. And their authority that was in the air when he arrived, but then dissipated later? Feels like they were testing something

Francis

I was thinking the same. The stuff Alden knows about Stu is so personal I cannot imagine him having more shocking revelations than that hidden away

Francis

Esh would have definitely felt that Alden is less "brittle" than before

Ian T Hathaway

Esh! Esh Esh Esh Esh!!! Ahem. Real glad to have our favorite Knights back. Excited for the Here-to-There. The lore bomb about U's not appearing much on Anesidora is gonna give the theoriests *thoughts,* which I'm not prepared for. Great work as always Sleyca!

WannaBeATree

Esh making small problems into huge ones for humorous purposes. Lind slowing down Esh's escalations for humorous purposes. Nice duo. :)

Gregory

You may be confusing Colibri and Plim. Colibri isn't "proud" of Alden getting into CNH because she was one of her interviewers and her explicit goal was to accept Alden, unconditionally, into either the high school or university.

John D Jones

I'm looking forward to Colibri getting a (verbal) beat-down from Esh, Lind or both together.

WannaBeATree

Finally figured out what this reminds me of: It's the mimic/toaster joke! :D

Destiny

Alden’s superhero costume will be his knight gown (lol)

Ruriva

Idk why Alden/the narrative is treating this like it’s some shady scheme. It’s just networking, like I get it if Alden doesn’t want the attention or responsibility, I personally don’t like networking but it’s not anything devious. As long as he’s not spreading false information. Maybe it’s because Alden doesn’t feel like he’s earned the commendation or a place in the school.

Ruriva

Alden’s hero name/persona has to be Atlas. The hero that holds up the sky is perfect for the bearer of all burdens.

Robert Mullins

Alden doesn't want to be used as a tool or mascot for the school to trick/guilt/beg the people who saved his life into spending money on the gym. It'd be very strange if he thought any different.

Jeremy Goldberg

Thank you for the chapter! “Collude with me against your powerful friend” is an offensive request on several levels.

Sebastian Winter

That would be a really fun hero persona for Alden. If Sleyca wanted to make it less typical (for an English speaking audience), they could use a name from a different Religion/culture but with similar concepts. ChatGPT suggested Kurma, Vishnu’s turtle form as a similar archetypal idea. Kurma does so voluntarily, vs due to being punished like Atlas, which could be a better analogy.

puppy0cam

it occurs to me that there would have needed to have been a significant amount of the world's marine vessels stationed around anesidora for preventing people from being smuggled out of anesidora. After all, the blockade is the entire reason the sinker sender was needed on that submarine. many of the ships participating in the blockade would have been sunk as a result of the uncontrolled destruction of the sinker sender. And that it would take weeks to months to get replacement military class vessels to anesidora. Anesidora is, by design, pretty much the furthest place from the rest of human civilization possible. SAL must be at peak business smuggling people off anesidora right now.

David

I’m honestly kind of surprised that Colibri doesn’t have some kind of talent for enhancing her social awareness or at least something to detect when she’s doing irreparable damage to her own cause. It seems like an essential tool for someone in her situation. Maybe those effects are too sway-y to be available to her class.

Awesomepossum15

Nowadays it's SkySea's responsibility, Anesidora's own Avowed coast guard. I feel like non-Avowed military/police ships would have been mentioned previously, especially if many were sunk.

Trin

Between Evul's "found you yummy thing" whistle and Lind's thrilled whistle here I'm wondering if there is an extended lexicon of Artonan whistles. Are they whistling in the human sense, or is it like a non-cringe shrill?

WannaBeATree

You know, I get the impression that Esh actually *was* messing with him, concerning the loudness of the challenge. And Lind supported his prank and that is why Esh smiled right after. Would be funny, if they messaged Emban and asked her to record the challenge for them with a "you'll know why, afterwards" added in. :x

The only thing I can think of is that maybe if your Appeal is high enough, you just assume that people will go along with whatever you suggest.

I unsubscribed with my phone and subscribed again through the browser, but I will still have to pay a fee of two euros each month. Did other people take an extra step to circumvent this fee or will I just have to hand these greedy piglets two euros for nothing each month?

Chapter 114 (Chainer Coda): > A toilet flushed in one of the neighboring stalls. I only just noticed this. I think that might have been our favourite post drop box making that sound rather than a neighbouring stall.

Anthony Lutz

Leo has been playing meditative sounds of toilet flushing since his introduction in CH20

ThoMiCroN

Every time I see this chapter’s title, I think of Peppy from Star Fox that says « Do a barrel roll! »

Morcant

So many little things, that could relate to bigger things in the (possibly near?) future to pick out in this chapter I felt. The way that the 'pressure' was described definitely felt like Lind and Esh were putting feelers out on his authority, after the knock he did wayy back when without realising. Can just feel the tension building for Aldeknight's wizarding shenanigans. Great chappy!

J Reynolds

One day Alden is going to visit the Triplanets and run into someone who Does. Not. Like. Humans. At. All. As in they're a card-carrying, paid-up member of the Artonan equivalent of the KKK. (AKKK? Artonan Ku Klux Klan?) This is going to be a shock when it happens.

Aspiring Moth

I'm not sure, like I doubt our human KKK people mind black people so much when they're slaves. avowed are subservient to the artonans, so I can't see artonan supremacists having any issues with them. eventually when Alden become a Knight out in the open though, I can see a lot of pushback from your artonan KKK types

PatienceHoney

I hope I am not repeating anyone, but here is my thought regarding the final paragraph. > “I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.” I have seen a lot of comments saying that this suggests that the knights know of Alden's wizardry. I think the opposite. I think the shade leaves represent this time for Stu and Alden of close friendship that cannot last. The harshness of reality is the assumption that (1) Alden is a resource for the Artonas and will have less agency of his time and will be summoned in the future and (2) Stu has made his intended future as a knight known, and will be moving on and bonding with other intended knights. I think they are worried about the earnestness of the two and that they will not be able to continue their suspension of disbelief / enjoying the moment to take all the comfort available in this "fleeting" friendship. This potential explanation of that statement feels in line with Esh and Lind's deep understanding of life's difficulties and the importance of taking comfort in the moment.

Awesomepossum15

I think I am TOO invested in this story, back to back skip weeks has me bouncing off the walls. During the skip month I was able to get Alden and the System and authority to stop revolving in my brain during the first week of it, but with the consistent but more spread out updates it's just long enough that I'm always looking for my fix.

PatienceHoney

I don't know what you mean... I have it under control! [PatienceHoney approaches shady character in back alley. Young girl with suspiciously advanced textbooks, "sure, sure, I can get you some Soup, just Venmo me and I'll send a chapter to you. There are some great Alt reality CNH Hearts side stories that I've aquired..."]

JJ Hunter

Here-to-Theres being the kind of communal event where << unchaperoned >> ones can happen and catch stray wizards up in social expectation assigning an unlooked-for task. The general Artonan predilection for poetry, and ritual, and practices that reinforce community ties and expected relations between wizards and ordinary Artonans ('Is any spell wanted?" / “We’re all well cared for, and the work proceeds.”). Alden's participation in the Here-to-There likely to involve << challenging >> and "the announcing” - is this specific to knights and Avowed participating? Is it the duty of the youngest child present, or the one who has traveled furthest? Is this going to be some kind of wassailing tradition akin to Mari Lwyd that ends in a communal houseraising or something?

JJ Hunter

(For anyone unfamiliar with Mari Lwyd, it involves poetry battles! this is a good writeup: https://welearnwelsh.com/blog/welsh-christmas-horse-skull-mari-lwyd/ .)

puppy0cam

I agree with the sentiment that they don't know about alden's... individualities. It feels like Sleyca teasing us rather than telling us that the secret's out.

Josh Brooks

Not a real committed thought, but something that’s a little sweet: Haoyu always wanted a sibling, and now everyone’s brothers on Bromelimas

Robert Mullins

Saw someone else confusing Emban and Evul. Just remember that Evul is a cat because cats are evil. She likes lounging on things she shouldn't, including tables and little brothers, and likes to vaporize things. Emban is the dog. She's protective and doubtful of new people until you give her a treat, a few pets, and let her see you make her family smile.

Dylan Sutton

There is no way that those two haven’t picked up on his wizardness yet.

JJ Hunter

On reread, I can't *believe* I missed Lind's excellent contribution to their planned prank on my original read - the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly falling drink that Esh spilled in his teleport-like single step towards Alden. It's such a great visual! ("Behind Esh-erdi, the mug he’d abandoned fell toward the sofa in barely discernible slow motion, a fan of red liquid spilling from its rim.") And I love how it builds as Alden calms down and processes his initial '!!!' surge of adrenaline is a non-urgency going nowhere fast ("[...] a sofa that would have a big red stain on it in a few hours at the rate Esh-erdi’s drink was falling"). It's also delightful how Esh makes swoopy scoopy motions with his arm to gather his spilled drink back into his glass: that's exactly how I would want magic to help me magic my spilled drink (potion?) back into my glass for drinking.

JJ Hunter

Lind is just as much of a prankster as Esh is, isn't she, or at least absolutely up for matching him idea for idea. She's so good at playing the metaphorical straight man to his more overt prankster, but she's actually enabling, one upping, and tempering his pranks to help them land better. “I have heard your best croak [...] That volume will be adequate" *indeed*, heh.

Jazehiah

Dogs also like lounging in places they shouldn't and eating (vaporizing) things. /s This is a fun visual.

Guus van der Borg

My assumption of what a Here-to-There is: It's a group of wizards (and knights) that walk from Point A to Point B, loudly announcing that they are there to help with any problem anyone might be experiencing. And that anyone if free to take them up on their 'challenge'. It feels like a thing that a random passing wizard might get 'caught up' in and get a random task thrown at him. It also feels in line with the tradition that wizards offer help with spells if they enter a room, and the general Artonan belief that wizards should benefit the community.

JJ Hunter

I am SO CURIOUS if Alden is going to have occasion to say 'let me take your luggage' and use his skill for exactly that! Is this going to be the rare occasion where he can actually use his skill to help Stu do wizardly tasks?

awkwardpaws

I feel like they're both trying to be part of the Here to There, as if Aiden started his journey already even though he hasn't left earth yet. And I was almost expecting them to ask each other at the end, "So, what shall we buy for our little rabbit's school?"

J Reynolds

I think that Esh has figured out that Alden has BoaB and will suggest that he keep developing his skill. Alden already know this, of course. What Alden could do is say: "Ask me to repeat that information back to you." "<< How curious. >> Repeat that back to me." "Sorry, no can do. I've got a secrecy tattoo that prevents me from talking about it."

Martin Svensson

But, then you are trying to circumvent indirectly the contract which was explicit not allowed.

SnuggleCat

You guys need to comment more. That way I'll have something to read while I wait for the next chapter. Give me your wildest theories and au fanfics.

Aspiring Moth

I reckon Alden will end up accidentally bringing a bunch of junior knights and wizards from this here to there to be guest instructors for the gym in the last week of the term, inadvertently defeating the political maneuver of the li jean sect

Jeremy Goldberg

I learned recently that prior to World War II, many cities in the US celebrated Moving Day, when everyone’s leases expired at once and a significant fraction of the population would switch houses. Apparently it’s still kind of a thing in Boston, and they call it “Allston Christmas” for some reason?

Zadaine

Alden's teleport isn't to the rapport but to some other location Here-to-there is a plumbing conference about moving wastewater from here to there. Stuart slips on a banana peel Sleyca writes an entire backstory for a character but cuts it out of the chapter Evul found out about the invitation emban gave Alden and is secretly teleporting him to a party instead to prank him. Lute's boss is there and goes on about Alden's heart shining with the light of a quasar. Mother lands Alden's teleport in the path of a mudball someone threw.

Fabian

> “He’s going to be awesome one day, reassembling whole buildings or something.” I'm totally reading "Reassembling Reality" into it. "Reasserting Reality", "Repairing a broken System or space ship of some kind", invaluable in most situations. Anyone wanna bet its a Knight-prepared skill? There is no upper limit to the concept. Just takes a little bit more time for the swooning legions to appear, having to become a knight first. The System totally fucked him over there. The System following its own priorities. Also: Do not skip the note.

Aspiring Moth

it does sound like a Knight skill. the only issue is that reader of records alone doesn't actually do anything without spell impressions that use the records it generates. maybe it was one of the original 300 avowed skills specifically designed to be used in combination with spell impressions, rather than a standard knight skill where all of the authority is meant to be bound back into the skill itself. getting new compatible spell impressions is similar to getting new facets of bearer of all burdens

JJ Hunter

Amusement of the day: imagining how thrilled Esh would be if Alden ever tapped him for catsitting. I bet Victor would have a suitcase-full of whatever Esh decided the cat version of 'interesting stick' would be within days. This person really wants some opportunity to give you things of his own hands' making, Alden! He did an entire magical herptatorium for Tiny Snake, imagine what kind of cat furniture he would design for Victor in the huntski lodge!

Eva

Sleep well this night, Sleyca Write when the sun shines Surprise us with early soup.

WannaBeATree

Has Alden ever tried preserving just the inside of a banana? Peeling fruits would be so much easier.

Jeremy Goldberg

Hey, wait, when Lute mentioned “a darkly alluring Thor character,” was that a reference to classical mythology or the Marvel cinematic universe?

J Reynolds

Sounds like it! I was also thinking that Monty Python was a thing in the Soupverse, due to junk email being called spam.

Fabian

We will clearly have a battle of earnestness. Alden, trained by papa << croak >>, and Stu, << wannabe champion >> not wanting to be left behind.

David

The idea that all animals have an equivalent “interesting stick” leads to the unsettling thought that there’s one out there for humans.

denatured

Watching YouTube trying to fill the time between now and soup. Queue up a calisthenics video, dude opens with, apropos of nothing, a nice stick he found. Comments are full of praise for stick. I think, what an interesting stick! And since all roads lead back to soup, I came back to refresh another couple of times. Just in case.

PatienceHoney

Its your own fault! The chapter would probably be here already. But, because of your weird voo doo, Sleyca now has to incorporate cupcakes with Evul and college lab tours with Emban into what she has already written.

VP

Re-listening to Super Powereds bc other than rereading soup it's the one thing that fills the soup void

Robert Mullins

Goodbye backlog. We didn't know you long, but you will be missed

WannaBeATree

we don't know for sure. :x but if yes, then it looks like a mind set problem and those are so damn hard to fix. :/

Richard

Tonight I go to sleep hungry.

JJ Hunter

It's very funny to me that last chapter contained a literal barrel roll, and was named 'Power', and this chapter is named 'Barrel Roll' and contains Alden feeling (socially) powerless to do the barrel roll he really wants to do on the Nine-Edged Son Whose Own Mother Forsakes Him to escape from Colibri's unsolicited conversational onslaught.

Samantha Lane

Yum, this is the soup I adore.

Sean Shivers

Ok but think about how funny it would be if someone used the emergency teleport to escape an awkward conversation.

Type

Thanks for the gift it was an unexpected pleasant surprise

Whillowhim

Was rereading this and one tiny detail lept out at me. You know it's a magical world when there are somehow lots of varieties of banana to share with your alien friends. In this world, bananas are pretty much a monoculture since a tree blight wiped out all but one kind of tree that was resistant to it. This had some interesting knock on effects, like how artificial banana doesn't actually taste like fresh banana, because it was formulated after the most popular variety that was wiped out. I assume in Alden's world magic saved the bananas.
