Edited: September 10, 2025

The master of the house, the neighborhood, and the golden retriever often revised his initial rating of his Saturday morning show after some time had passed. This revision was usually positive. An episode interesting enough to linger in his thoughts was a good episode.

On the Saturday night after Episode #473 was created, Elias emerged from his workshop on the top floor of the house and descended the stairs with a shallow black case in his arms. The keys he had made that afternoon were within it, each of the small circular devices perfectly placed in its own slot. A drone waited on the front stoop with an identical, but empty, case in its compartment. Elias swapped the cases and watched the drone lift off. It flew toward the infogear factory, one yellow light blinking in a dark sky.

This routine had been repeated for many nights and would be for many more.

“Daunting.”

He closed the door, then went into the living room. When he flopped onto the sofa, the dog, paws wrapped around a stuffed toy, thumped its tail in greeting.

“MBF,” Elias said after several minutes spent gazing at the light fixture, “revise the rating on this morning’s episode. Eight out of twelve is too low for Alden. For keeping my mind engaged during tedious work this afternoon, let’s give him…”

MBF waited silently.

“He went to the Rabbit Welcome tonight?” asked Elias.

“He did.” MBF’s voice spoke in his ear.

“I’m sure he was invited to participate in almost every one of the follow-up events. Rabbits do love pulling the significant young ones deep into the fold as soon as possible. Is he currently at a dance, a dinner, or whatever the special after-gathering is this year?”

“He left Nautilus Needle at 9:28 PM,” said MBF. “He’s currently approaching the Celena North Campus.”

“Show me the clip of him with the friend from Chicago…name?”

“Jeremy Levi.”

“Show me Jeremy and Alden outside Bridget’s shop again.”

One of the screens he’d used earlier dropped down from the ceiling, and a ten-second-long clip of two teenagers walking into the largest Wright store in Apex appeared.

Jeremy was teasing Alden about being an Adjuster geek who’d forgotten he had a spell impression.

“Alden is rolling his eyes like he might have heard this more than once. And it sounds like part of a longer conversation they’ve been having,” said Elias. “Do we have more like it? Something else from around the same time?”

“They spent a significant amount of time at North of North prior to this.”

“Ah. Even if we could somehow persuade the gym to let us record, the members there wouldn’t be caught dead wearing infogear.”

“A few of them have ordered pieces recently,” said MBF.

“I can’t say I’m delighted about our increased popularity given the reason for it.”

Elias drummed his fingers on the tops of his thighs while he thought. “A boy who wants to be an Adjuster superhero gets Chainer and trades it for Rabbit…and afterward, he relishes neither the perks of Rabbit society nor his spell impression…

“The most likely explanation I’ve come up with so far is Aulia’s obscenely reckless wordchain. I’m not ruling out the possibility that Alden was five minutes away from trading Chainer for Adjuster on the eve of the Elber girl’s memorial service when a live rabbit crossed his path—spotlighted by a moonbeam breaking through heavy clouds—and he took it as a sign from God, not realizing it was just a set-up to make him the delivery boy for Aulia’s little killer. By the way, is anyone suspicious about that situation beyond the expected amount?”

“Not to my knowledge,” MBF replied. “Those who knew Manon Barre well enough to find her absence and lack of communication strange are the ones who knew her well enough to suspect that questioning it might be dangerous for them.”

“I see. And Aulia couldn’t have arranged a more effective cover-up than the one we just endured. A wealthy Rabbit not returning to Anesidora after a deadly disaster in which the System showed a relatively low interest in protecting her class—even Archie wouldn’t bother looking into it. Are we sure Aulia didn’t drown the country a little bit on purpose to protect Hazel?”

“It isn’t likely that—”

“I was joking, of course, MBF.” He looked at the clip frozen on the screen, focusing on Alden’s face. “I almost want to tell him how perfectly he vanquished his enemies. When Aulia called to request we block access to any suspicious records of Hazel, the information you put together about how it had all come to pass painted such an elegant path of cause and effect.

“Somehow, during Alden’s first assignment as an Avowed, Manon Barre makes an error, and he obtains a piece of her truth. He keeps it to himself. After he finally lands on Anesidora, he continues keeping it to himself for weeks. He is, apparently, waiting for her to be away from Earth so that she can’t respond to his attack. Then, when he decides it’s time, he informs.” Elias clapped his hands together once. “Based on the activities of her underlings around then, I think he even had some theories about their hierarchy and the limitations of her control over them that he was trying to leverage by staggering the release of his knowledge. I’m sure he was ignorant of many things, but he was correct about enough to wound her.”

Elias extended his index fingers and began to draw one slowly through the air toward the other. “Manon returns to find her people upset and her power threatened. Angry and under stress, her flaws strengthen, and her self-control weakens. And that’s when Alden attacks Hazel Velra with the same weapon—damaging, damning truth.”

His other finger began to move. “Hazel has been made fragile by the pressures of her family, her disappointing rank, and her genius. When the boy’s accusation forces her grandmother to publicly scold her, she shatters. And Manon, not at her best, is too eager to pick up a broken Velra. She must think she can use Hazel without getting cut.”

His fingers met.

“She was wrong about that. And she was the only person positioned to understand how it all came to pass. She had much more information than you and I. Do you think in her final moments she gave him any credit for it? If she and Hazel hadn’t offended Alden’s sense of right and wrong, they wouldn’t have ended up in that room together.”

He dropped his hands.

“Well, I’ll give him credit for it. One belated point for that incident, because I’ve enjoyed thinking about it even if it wasn’t part of today’s show. Victory through the acquisition and release of secrets deserves at least that much from the Informant. Let’s see…only one point more for the mystery of why he picked his class. His discovery of a skill that’s limited to a single user could have been the result of Gloss effects on that day, but if that’s what happened, it would still be interesting to understand why it all needed to end up as it has. I can tell from the way you presented that puzzle that you don’t have a likely answer for how he might have ended up with that class and that skill. Am I mistaken?”

“You are correct,” said MBF. “There are many possibilities based on my collected knowledge of him. None of them are likely occurrences or perfect matches for what is already known.”

Elias nodded. “But you do think you know something worthwhile about him that I might enjoy figuring out, don’t you? That one tantalizing moment you put at the end of the show. The final scene. Show it to me again.”

In the clip that appeared before Elias a second later, Alden Thorn walked along a street in F-city, a plastic rain poncho preserved by his skill protecting him from the howling storm that was keeping the sidewalk and street mostly empty.

The scene had been captured by an infodrone struggling to return to an owner who wore a matching infowatch. The image wobbled wildly. The sound of Alden’s laughter and the single word he spoke had not been recorded.

His smile was brilliant, and the show ended on it.

“I appreciate the opportunity to practice my lip reading, MBF,” said Elias, “and I don’t mind you making it a bit too obvious which part you think I’ll have the most fun with. A single, very significant word is most likely to be a proper name. And look at his face! He’s either receiving excellent news from the person he’s talking to, or that person is one he likes very much. Don’t tell me if I’m wrong…the name is Stuart. And Stuart is someone Alden Thorn considers himself close to. You believe that you know who Stuart is and that I know enough to eventually figure it out myself even though you’ve given me almost nothing that seems to be connected to this in the rest of the show.

“And naturally, the answer must be important enough to earn its spot as the finale…without being so urgent that you’d just tell me to save time.”

MBF didn’t respond.

“Thank you. You know I hate spoilers. Have the name Stuart appear on my calendar at random intervals so that I’m reminded of this. One more point for how much I’ll enjoy coming up with the answer. That’s eleven out of twelve for the episode. Give Alden the standard thank you present for being this week’s star.”

“Requests for information about him will be denied for eleven months, starting now,” said MBF. “I will remind you when the lock expires.”

[…What I’m saying is that I nearly criticized that person in Artonan. First the gokoratches, now this. Your influence on humanity is getting more powerful every day.

I assume you’re still resting. I will be, too, as soon as Lute stops composing music in our kitchen. One of his instructors finally got annoyed with him for skipping so many classes this term and said he couldn’t have an A. That’s the highest grade on our student ranking scale. Since it’s a music class, he’s mad about it, so he’s creating a song using his harp and nontraditional instruments for extra credit. When I walked in, he was recording the sound of potato chips falling into the sink.

He says he’s almost done.

I hope you wake up to a day that’s easier than yesterday.

Goodnight from Earth.]

Alden yawned, sent the message to Stuart, and spent a minute listening through one ear to all of the kitchen drawers being rapidly opened and closed.

How did I lose just one of my good ear plugs? Shouldn’t it be both or neither? Did I swallow it in my sleep?

The dorm’s loosely observed quiet period wouldn’t start for almost an hour, so it wasn’t just Lute being noisy. Someone up on the third floor was shouting out of his window because that was obviously the best way for an Avowed to communicate with his sister in the girls’ building.

It was fine. Bed was comfortable. He was thinking Boe might text him soon, since it was two hours later in Illinois, and Boe could at least shoot a message before he went to sleep.

And Alden did feel like he had a few things he wanted to say to other people. Finding the right words might take a while.

[Dear Ryada… ]

[Ryada,]

[Hi there, Ryada-bess!]

Alden wove his auriad through his fingers while he watched his interface, where his message was failing to magically write itself.

I’ll let the hardest one marinate in my subconscious while I send a different one. Maybe that’ll do it.

He started one to the faculty advisor who needed to sign off on his classes for next quarter. It would only take a minute or two.

******

[Boe:  Hey. You up?]

[Alden:  Hey! Finally. I’m awake. Turn on video to see something awesome.]

Boe appeared. Still in day clothes, he was sitting on the floor with his back against his bedroom door. “I see you’ve found your way back to your dorm room. Truly, that is awesome.”

[Alden:  You’re supposed to be admiring my light source. I can’t hold it much longer.]

He moved his auriad around, looking away from his friend’s face so he could concentrate on the light he’d called. The beam was tight. It would be neat if he could just…

“Crap.”

[Boe: It went out.]

[Alden:  I wanted to make it more diffuse. Like a glow. It’s a spell that seems adjustable. The first time I cast it, I think I almost set my room on fire, which wasn’t anything like what my book described. It’s more demanding of me than I expected, too. I’m not strong enough to keep it up for long. I think because of what it is… ]

“Sorry, I’m rambling on aren’t I?” He let his auriad wrap itself back around his left wrist. “What have you been up to all day?”

“You can ramble. I’m interested even if it’s not something I can understand the way you do.”

[Alden:  I’m calling on the memory of light that’s filled this space previously. Isn’t that wild?] He tucked his hands behind his head. “There, my ramble is over. Your turn.”

“Went to breakfast with Jeremy,” said Boe.

“Hash browns!”

“Reuben sandwich.”

“That’s a fine choice, too. Not normal breakfast food, but I used to puree chaos-altered lettuce and cover alien rice and beans with it, so who am I to judge?”

“Yum.”

“Natalie owes me cinnamon rolls. I’ll try to keep one hidden for you in the freezer while I wait for a package teleport slot, but I can’t promise. What was the rest of your day like?” He waited.

“Alden, are you really thinking you won’t do the superhero thing like you always wanted?”

Alden blinked. “I thought we were on you now. Why do our conversations keep going back to me? I was about to ask you some stuff about your own plans.”

Boe shook his head. “Are you sure I’m not screwing that up for you?” [By being what I am.]

Alden couldn’t tell if Boe was very worried about it or just a little. His tone wasn’t giving much away.

“If it’s because of you, then it’s only ten percent because of you,” said Alden. “And ninety percent of it is me figuring me out. I still admire so much about Hannah’s goal for being a support hero, but…”

“Doesn’t fit with the new hero type you’re crafting for yourself?”

“It’s not that. It’s less big picture than that. Me pulling away from my old vision in this case is based on some practical, basic stuff. Like in Engaging with the Unexpected, the question is usually, ‘What would you do?’ And my answer half the time is either, ‘I’d do nothing,’ or, ‘I’d do something I actually think is wrong to prevent another superhero from doing something I think is wronger.’ I think working as a city hero like Hannah did, I’d get tired, and probably fired, rapidly. So even if I do decide to slip into a costume, something less like that and more like what Haoyu’s parents do, or Instructor Fragment, would be better for me. Why?”

Boe shrugged. “No major reason. We’ve touched on the topic from a couple of angles since I got back. You told me you weren’t going to devote a ton of time to making nice with the Chicago team, even though they’ve given you an opening. That’s a big decision. I just wanted confirmation.”

[Alden: Confirmed. You being a technical criminal isn’t the main factor in this decision.] “Every other decision in my life is about you, of course. I can’t get you off of my mind. I only chose my Azure Rabbit trait because I suspected it would make me jump higher, and—”

“If you say what I think you’re going to say, you dumbass—”

“I just want you to look at me the way you look at frogs.”

“You are not funny.”

“Then why are we both laughing?”

Boe straightened his face, then gave Alden a superior look. “I was laughing at you, not with you.”

“Sure you were.” A tear of mirth tickled its way down Alden’s cheek. He wiped it away. “Now, if you’ve got a minute, I did want to ask you something. Several things. Mostly about your own future plans.”

“My own?”

“Yeah, man. We talk mainly about me since everything happened. I didn’t mean for it to be that way every time I called you.” [I’m not the only one learning how to handle this whole superhuman lifestyle. What about what you’re dealing with? I think if we account for catspace, you can’t have had much more time than I have to get used to it all. Don’t you want to pick my brain about what you’re planning sometime? If you’re going to come to Anesidora one day, I’ll rent all the apartments around yours so that I can bother you from every direction but you won’t have to hear from other feelers. If you become a superhero, I will buy all of your merch and wear it constantly. And if you’re going to stay in hiding, might I suggest any of the great places on Earth that lack an active hero team? That money I’ve put you in charge of will spend even better in some of those places, right?]

Boe was staring at him so hard he was calling to mind a very different friend.

“Do I have a booger hanging out of my nose or something?” Alden asked.
“I don’t think I said anything to deserve this awkward silence.”

Boe shook himself. “No…it’s…of course I have things I want for my future. Ideas. That’s what people our age do, isn’t it?”

“It’s all a scam to keep guidance counselors in business. Share your ideas with me instead of them. I work for free.”

“Sure,” said Boe. “I will. Not…now, though. It’s almost one in the morning here, and that would be a long convo.”

“It does sound like a longer one. Fun, though. Okay. I was in the middle of figuring out what I wanted to put in a letter to someone anyway. Dream of me ribbiting at you.”

“I will not fucking do that.”

“You hope.

Hn’tyon Bithe,

The Here-to-There ended with such an unexpected act by Olget-ovekondo that I don’t feel like I said a proper farewell to you. I’m glad to have met you, and if our paths don’t cross again, know that I believe I have grown through our meeting.

Life here on Anesidora is mostly safe and mostly peaceful. I wish safety and peace for you and the family you’ve chosen, even though it’s a wish for a harvest out of proper season.

I hope I’ve said that well enough for my meaning to overcome differences in language.

Sincerely,

Alden

***

Hn’tyon Emban-art’h,

Thank you for inviting me to help with the Here-to-There. It was an experience I don’t think another human has ever had. I learned so much and enjoyed working alongside you, your friends, and Stu.

I’ll remember it always. I look forward to seeing you again and maybe being beaten at throwing paper flyers.

Sincerely,

Alden (the human one)

***

Hn’tyon Ryada-bess,

It’s hard to explain why meeting you has had an impact on me without telling you things that are too personal. I keep trying and then erasing it all. I’m sorry that in this version I’ll probably tell you more about myself than you wanted to know and still not everything I wanted you to hear.

In a way, I died on Moon Thegund.

I didn’t lose all of me, but I lost so much. And when I came back here, to Earth, I thought I’d never stop grieving for all the missing pieces and fighting against who I am now and all the ways I feel different.

Sometimes, I still grieve. Sometimes, I smile even though I’m screaming inside because it’s rarely okay to show your darkness to someone else, and it’s never easy.

Right now, I want to take those words back and not show them to you. I hope I don’t. I hope I leave them in.

One thing I have to say is, I’m glad I didn’t die there. Another is, I keep finding new pieces to replace what was lost. And there are parts of me I was sure were worse after Thegund—parts I called bad—that don’t bother me much at all now. I believe that some of them may even be strengths I haven’t learned to appreciate yet.

It was so hard for such a long time, even after I came back to this place I thought would feel like home. If you’d met me several weeks ago, you’d have met a t’tchispa freaking out and slicing its belly open on rocks, trying to make myself fit back in.

I hope you read that poem you were standing on at the train station, or you’re going to think that sentence was weird.

I’m seeing a mind healer. I’m facing my fears in my dreams instead of letting them consume me. I saw you folding the kooba skins, and I won’t presume to know what it meant to you, but in watching your action I recognized a weakness in my own compassion that I will try to make better.

I couldn’t have done any of this in the immediate aftermath of Thegund. I couldn’t have done it without the help of people who’ve been looking out for me. Stu is one of them. I know you have people like that, too.

I’m sending you a picture of Everly Kim trying to keep her new exfoliating cloth away from everyone in our class who wanted to touch it. It was funny. Kon said to thank you for buying it.

I’m honored to know you.

Thank you.

I hope I’ll see you again.

With a yell in my throat,

Alden

Tidbits & References:

Jeremy & Alden conversation — Would have occurred on the day described in Chapter 72. That’s also the first time the Informant was mentioned, and they met his son, Tarek, at the Wright shop.

Aulia’s little killer — You should read Chapter 121 if you want a refresher on this incident. If you want the full build-up, start with Chapter 120.

final clip of the morning show — This scene with Alden in the rain would have occurred around the end of Chapter 103, when he spent the whole day talking to Stuart during school and went for a walk in a preserved poncho that afternoon.

12 star rating — one star for every month of the year

nontraditional musical instruments — purely for your enjoyment, I inform you that there is a YouTube video of a guy playing “All Star” by Smash Mouth on melons

Thanks for the chapter

Your welcome for supporting super supportive

Krae Z Hand

I felt like it was thematically appropriate to support this work Edit: HOLY SHIT. ELEVEN MONTHS????? Is Alden still under the effects of the Gloss???? Amazing! He has no idea how quiet a rabbit he'll be able to be

Lucas

Thanks for the story Sleyca! Been doing a reread of the whole thing from the beginning and I always catch myself smiling because it's just that good!!! So again, thanks! :)

JT

A yell? Tell Stuart already darn it.

puppy0cam

> “I will remind you when the lock expires.”  wouldn't a better policy be to remind him *before* it expires?

Super Super Supportive Supporter

At the end of Elias’ brainstorming: “This can only mean one thing, MBF.” *Elias turns towards the camera* “We are inside a story… and Alden Thorn is the main character.” *ominous music plays*

D Potto

That final letter from Alden is so touching! I hope we get to see the reactions to those letters, and how they move those who read them. That said I hope we're building to some forward momentum soon - I know Alden isn't fully done healing, but this feels like a wonderful breakpoint to move things forward again. Ty again for a wonderful chapter!

BelligerentGnu

Oh wow. That was another level of poignant. I cannot wait for Alden's choosing season to come to an end.

Zero

I love how compassionate and empathetic you write Alden Sleyca, its nice to see that just by interacting with a wide variety people and cultures he is learning and growing as a person. I'm still hella curious about how Gorgon's people and forms of magic have influenced Alden. Thanks for the chapter and I look forward to what comes next.

Julkur

Thank you ❤️

shawn greer

i'm not crying. my screen is just a little fuzzy.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

“Requests for information about him will be denied for eleven months, starting now,” said MBF. “I will remind you when the lock expires.”  Somewhere out there, Aulia is howling in anguish and frustration

Gaffer

So, the Informant keeps the most interesting people on Anesidora info-locked, meaning that only he can know -why- they are interesting…

Tzeneth

Which one is Ryada-bess, again?

Nyroe

Ok so now Alden has almost a year to be EVEN MORE elusive and mysterious. Maybe this time he'll slip up and reveal his true powers when he speaks his mind to the Anisidoran government, resulting in sweeping reforms to criminal avowed legislation.

BatheticBoy

The Informant is such a weirdo. Your involuntary prize for him snooping into your life is... safety from people snooping into your life! I'm intrigued by the contradiction.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Interesting though - the fact that these are the biggest mysteries mean that either MBF has more planned, MBF thinks Elias will stumble upon Alden’s magic while thinking about Stuart, or Alden actually has kept his magic a secret Or MBF and the system have one of those, you know, arrangements

Krae Z Hand

iirc The uncertain one who is unhappy with her skill and struggling with being open and honest with her fellow hyntons

Wheels of Terror

So MBF doesn't necessarily tell Elias everything, whether because he wants to figure some of it out himself or not. 11 months! Alden has bought himself time he didn't know he might have been losing. Can't wait for the discussion of Boe's plans. I wonder, does Alden know Boe's situation with his parents? It's too bad the roommate squad can't be involved. I hope the letter helps Ryada.

zero

Thank you for the chapter

TDarwin

Awesome chapter!

abowden

Interesting. He didn't make the connection from Alden's skill to Hannah Elber's abilities. I guess MBF didn't show him her full suite?

Matt S.

A yell and a croak. Don't frogs croak too? Boe probably wouldn't enjoy that one tho. 😅

Robert Mullins

So, we got confirmation that Alden has no intentions of being a superhero anymore. Not that he joined the program for that purpose but it does again make me wonder if he'll stay in the talent development program for next semester and beyond.

Gaffer

“A wealthy Rabbit not returning to Anesidora after a deadly disaster in which the System showed a relatively low interest in protecting her class” Huh, the System not valuing Rabbits highly in the crisis wasn’t obvious to me - I thought Emilja lost teleport privs for being F as much as anything. But I suppose if the System was prioritizing force preservation a lot of napkin-folders would have been relatively low priority, enough to be obvious to folks like Manon (well, like Manon but living)

11037

Alden's d20 only has 1 and 20. DM: "The Informant is choosing his entertainment for the day. Roll a d20 to see how much attention he gives you." Alden: 1 DM: "From a long list of names, he randomly choses just you. Roll for how many secrets you manage to keep." Alden: 20 DM: "You somehow manage to have stayed almost entirely in blind spots in his network. But, uh, perhaps he decides to dig deeper? (Come on man, this is the plot)" Alden: 20 DM: *sigh*. Fine.

Dino

His thoughts did feel very much like a narrator for our story

Robert Mullins

`I hope I’ve said that well enough for my meaning to overcome differences in language.` Politely devastating Alden is never going to let him live that comment down until the day he dies. * *Granted that's probably not as difficult with knights compared to normal wizards.

Guus van der Borg

I'm actually surprised in the opposite direction I thought we already knew he was never going to be a superhero, due to both the pseudo-knighthood that he won't be able to hide forever, but mainly because of the fact that it involves dragging unwilling supers to Anesidora. And now he says that he wouldn't mind joining a battle group like Omega Scorpii. So he DOES still have SOME superhero in him. Which makes sense I suppose. Those types don't go after the soccer moms, but the Body Drainers. Which is a liiitle more justified. In my opinion, and likely Alden's as well.

Gaffer

“The most likely explanation I’ve come up with so far is Aulia’s obscenely reckless wordchain” The Informant would fit in well here: he’s up late on a weekend after the latest drop of the Alden Show, and he blames every plot twist on The Gloss

Guus van der Borg

My favorite part of this chapter is how insanely impressed The Informant was with Aldens Information Warfare skills. He maaaaay be reading a biiiiit too much into things, but I loved his take on it. Almost an equivalent to Winston thinking Alden is a social media genius, but in a positive way this time. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Matt V

If Ryada is needing extra time to acclimate to her affixation, that means she'll likely be grouped up with Stu and (presumably) Alden. That letter was so moving, I hope it helps her and leads to a deepening friendship between her and Alden - and Stu by proxy. After reading that I don't think there's any way she doesn't become a more important character in the future.

SkyGold

Such a perfect chapter 💙

John D Jones

And... Ryada-bess now becomes another member of Alden's non-sexual "harem."

Longoo

Thanks for another great chapter!

Guus van der Borg

To be fair, he's at least limiting it to the time period it was still in effect. That's more than can be said about most crackpot theories here.

Dan F

[Note: Hi! Thank you for creating Super Supportive. ]

Maximus

It appears that Elias might stumble upon Gorgon because, if I remember correctly, he was the primary reason Alden chose the skill he did, right?

Thomas Todd

Alden's little, I hope I've said that well enough, to blithe is both considerate and a little salty. I love it

Janny

I’m interested to see how the information lock comes into play. Especially with more people asking questions as Alden becomes more interesting.

JustCD

You do realise that people who aren't terminally online degenerate trash just call them friends and acquaintances.

Gregory

He was, and it’s fascinating that we haven’t seen Elias mention him. Good odds there’s no recording in the Artonan consulate, but Alden certainly talked about Gorgon enough with his friends that it should have come up. Maybe it got dismissed as unimportant.

Jazehiah

Initial thoughts: > Someone up on the third floor was shouting out of his window because that was obviously the best way for an Avowed to communicate with his sister in the girls’ building. Probably not someone we know, but it's a good reminder that there are a ton of infogear nearby capable of listening to private conversations. People are going to be rereading Alden and Boe's conversation for a while. *** It's interesting what MBF does and does not share about Alden. It's clear that MBF knows who Stuart is. It's also evident that Alden's friendship with Gorgon is not factored into the calculations. "The Gloss did it" is good reasoning. Elias thinks Alden traded adjuster for rabbit after meeting Hazel. I keep coming back to the gaps in Elias' knowledge. *** I'm glad Alden got to bed on time. Lute keeping him from sleeping is funny. How late did it go? Did Alden forget he had a bed at Matadero? Lute's attendance record finally caught up with him. I remember students like that growing up. Lute would have been lucky he didn't get an auto fail for skipping so much. *** The messages were a really good way to tie things together. Were they written, video, or just audio? The one to Bithe sounded like it was recorded, unless Alden was joking about his written pronunciation, which I personally would have found funny. *** This chapter feels like the end of a volume much in the same way Alden's arrival in the teleport center did.

Gregory

Manon was notably C rank. Class feels a lot less relevant than that given what we saw, but we did also hear that the system was prioritizing preserving combat strength and Rabbits (usually) don’t count for much on that scale.

Gregory

MBF should not know about magic. Alden only uses it in his room, and allegedly the Informant doesn’t spy on private spaces without infogear.

Ducktacular

MBF actually playing with us right now. Puts the pin back in the hand grenade and walks away whistling like it didn't do nothing. Also damn Alden all the other Artonans are gonna want thier own humans now too. Bithe is going to start randomly breaking stuff so he can hang out with Kon. Alright unhinged speculation time. Elias talking about the Gloss reminded of his conversation with Aulia about magic. When Aulia performed the Gloss it had a lot of unintended side effects. From Lutes story about the dead class pet platypus thing it seems that participants unconscious desires can influence the Gloss. Aulias deepest desire is to obtain magic. Her obsessive focus on Hazel might be influenced by this, she could think that Hazels 'sensitivity' is a step towards developing an authority sense and view her granddaughter/daughter as a possible path to obtain magic for herself or for humans in general. The Gloss was intended to "get chainer for Hazel" but that might just be an extension of Aulias deeper desire to "get magic" If the Gloss couldn't get magic for Aulia then maybe it could do then next best thing. It could open a path for someone else that Aulia could follow. This I think set off the Rube Goldberg machine of fate and chaos that put a rabbit in front of a wizard at precisely the right time and left that rabbit on a moon at precisely the wrong time.

Gregory

He had no idea this was even a danger, beyond the general “infogear records stuff” knowledge.

skinnywhite

Do we know Boe's situation with his parents? I'm fairly new to Super Supportive, and I've seen speculation that Boe caused their current state when he was young, but my recollection of a time that we were reading from Boe's perspective (I don't recall the chapter of the top of my head) I got the sense he wasn't responsible for how they are, or at least didn't feel guilty when thinking about them.

Jazehiah

Was Alden writing that, or recording himself saying that? If it's in writing, it's hilarious. If it's a recording, Lute's music session is in the background. Also, Alden needs to soundproof his room. I guess it's a good thing he hasn't woken up screaming in a while.

Gregory

I think this is conspiracy thinking about the gloss. It’s pretty clear that it sets up luck for the immediate term, not the long term. It didn’t tip Aulia off about danger to the submerger, for example (unless you think the event will be a net gain for Aulia).

Stuart Brown

How could Alden not tell that Boe had absolutely zero plans for his own future? He must've been in day-to-day survival / look after parents mode. He stares hard at Alden because he suddenly realised his misconception, that Alden thought he was future focussed because Alden himself is. Alden's return, and his generous resource sharing, has transformed Boe's prospects - even his hero matching is forcing him to have experiences he would've avoided, but might find he has a taste for (more saving the hand-warmer kid than the drunk guy though)

Jazehiah

"The rabbit is interestin'." These outside perspectives are fun.

Amber Gregory

Sigh. Alden (Sleyca) is the best letter writer in this universe and probably the multitude of universes as well. Now I'm crying.

C D

I bet mother nudged earth's system to nudge MBF to nudge the Informant to enjoy the mystery of Alden while expecting him to respect his privacy and thus issuing an information lock.

AnonymousBlob

Thank you for the chapter. I love so much about this story, but the conversation with Ryada-bess at the end of 234 was especially lovely and heartbreaking at the same time. Alden’s message to her hits just as hard. So much dust in here, and it keeps landing in my eyes. ❤️

C D

I'm just so happy that in this ficticious universe, a kind empathic boy can finally exist and be (un)lucky enough to experience the things he has, while being earnest and true to himself without being destroyed by the awfulness that is reality for all of the real kind and empathic boys.

Mag1cM

I've noticed that when I read a new chapter for the first time I get an absolute anxiety spike at the end of every paragraph/scene because I'm worried that it will be the end of the chapter.

Kemlion

Naurrrr such a beautiful ending 🥹 12/12 for Alden

A Free Skeleton

Alden doesn't know how messed up Boe's parents are -- IIRC he's only met them once. Alden definitely doesn't know that Boe blames himself for them, and on top of that he thinks Boe affixed while Alden was on the Moon, instead of years ago. I think Boe wants to tell him more, but the System might not allow it -- just knowing that Boe affixed at 11, or whatever it was, already touches on a lot of stuff it seems to want to keep hidden.

Lyssur

Ooh, informant prize will be so much more valuable to Alden than he knows. Alden probably didn't have a lock because he didn't even know about the possibility; now, he has more time to figure it out, and buy a lock to protect his secrets then. Interesting to know that infogear is limited by location- the informant doesn't know what was said at North of North because of privacy privileges- which I doubt Alden even knows about. The intake dorms doubtlessly also have them- probably also the CNH dorms and gym (class buildings too?). And Matadero, obviously. Alden has been so lucky when it comes to sensitive information being overheard/seen. Will Elias figure out who Stuart is? All signs point to yes, especially since he has the commendation from Alis-art'h. This brings to mind Stu's talk about the knights not wanting to contact Earth- there's a good chance that Alden is the first Earth Avowed with connections to the knights, and especially to the art'h family- I am sure that other Avowed have strong political connections- probably to the Senate, and who knows what else- but this connection is new and huge- Aulia would kill to get her hands on Alden if she were to know. The letters were great, from Alden's rambling to Stuart- he's going to be worried that Alden is not yet asleep- careful Alden, he'll start sending you reminders- to his short friendly notes to Emban and Bithe, to the heartfelt letter to Ryada. Ryada's letter was very touching, and you can feel him saying things to her that he wishes had been said to him after Thegund. And Ryada has affected him- him explaining that having met her is guiding him closer to perfection is probably one of the biggest compliments he can give. Alden and Ryada seem to have some very interesting commonalities- thier compassion, being able to connect on a personal level to people quickly, being open to new experiences, having to come to terms with a skill that isn't perfect- I wouldn't be surprised if Alden were also 'charming', authority-wise. Looking at other comments, I find it funny that people are having so many different takes to Alden's last sentence to Bithe, about his language. From some people thinking he meant it sarcastically, others as a joke, to him being honest and showing some insecurity. I read it as the third- it's going to take him a long time to get over Bithe's cruel critique of his language skills. Yeah, he's not taking the outburst towards him personally, and he shouldn't- but like he was musing on earlier during the Here-to-There, social embarrassment stings very deep. And Bithe's words were intended to hurt, and they did. I am enjoying the mental image of him yelling in Artonan to the envious B-rank rabbit- now that would have definitely made others talk.

Ano Ano

What incredible letters. Alden is such a thoughtful, sweet boy. I love this story.

WannaBeATree

"[...] Dream of me ribbitting at you.” “I will not fucking do that.” “You hope.” Wow, that were some very subtle hints/foreshadowing(?). With: ribbitting => croaking => the elder's croak => knighthood. dream => nightmare => Alden's nightmare And the tension between Boe trying to keep Alden grounded/safe and Alden trying to be what he believes is his 'best' possible self. Combined with Boe's promise of saving an equal amount of people... Damn, even if I am just imagining every connection, that is still some good stuff! And so concise! *chef's kiss* . . . OMG, and the frog being something Boe stepped on, on accident and hating at first. SO many parallels! I don't know where to direct all that sudden excitement! :) Great chapter Sleyca! Also, it loops (text-to-speech) very nicely, so great job on the integration of the POV changes! :)

PeasOfCrab

Chapter’s insanely good. Thanks, Sleyca.

Christopher

He’s the kind of kid many of us wished we’d been and it’s so heartwarming to read.

J Reynolds

* afterward, he relishes neither the perks of Rabbit society or his spell impression." * Maybe it's just Elias speaking ungrammatically, but it's "neither... nor" / "either... or". You're not supposed to mix and match! https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/neither-neither-nor-and-not-either_2

J Reynolds

Sanjay has a sister in the girl's building. Given family sizes on Anesidora, and also given that Alden didn't say "Sanjay was shouting out his window", it probably was some other besistered person. * Alden was talking to Boe at 1am Chicago time, which was 10pm Anesidora time. So sleep before 11pm, I'd guess.

A Free Skeleton

The knights heard Stuart say that he and Alden were weaving a friendship, but it was probably hard for them to take it seriously: Ryeh'bts are helpful servants, Avowed are helpful servants, and during the Here-to-There Alden mostly bounced around providing helpful services. They have good reason to think that the "friendship" isn't really on equal footing, even if Alden and Stuart both want it to be. Ryada-bess, at least, now knows better.

Terrestrial_Biped

Silently screaming about how good this chapter is, because screaming out loud would wake my people up.

Zenty

Great chapter! Even Elias can figure out how much Alden likes Stu from a single instance of them interacting, wild. ^^

JJ Hunter

What an extraordinary chapter. Alden isn't the only one struggling with how to go on after life-altering awful; he's now secure enough in his own footing that he can reach out to Boe, to Ryada-bess, and offer a hand to help without immediately toppling back into drowning himself. I'm struck by how much Alden and Elias use similar language around discovering pieces of others' "truths"; they have wildly different approaches to what they do with that knowledge, and to what lengths they will go to acquire it, but they both tend to think about understanding other people as a process of learning driving factors / keys / truths that shape how someone chooses to be in the world. Leave it to the Informant to properly appreciate Alden's gift for weaponizing "damaging, damning truth". What the Informant isn't seeing (yet) is that Alden is also learning how to use the truth to heal, connect, correct. Sometimes lancing a delusion and replacing it with a more meaningful paradigm is a form of rescue. Olget and the unnamed Rabbit kid at the party may not have appreciated that nuance in the moment of confrontation, but their lives may be better for what they build in the aftermath.

Christoffer Gustafsson

I wonder if Elias will chastise himself for not taking more interest in figuring out that Stuart is the Primarys son. Pretty certain that should be quite the bombshell for him.

LadyLark

Am I the only one creeped out that some old man wants to record stuff on a campus. Where those under the age of 18 live? He might not be a pervert but that doesn’t make it acceptable.

Stuart Brown

The Informant is kinda like a private Anesidoran Intelligence Agency. It *is* creepy the insight all of them likely have into our lives - even here where Sleyca outlines his own view of his role as a kind of guardian looking into "the puzzle of people" as a distraction from routine work.

Stuart Brown

The Informant also showed zero regard for Manon's manipulated crew, whereas that was Alden's primary motivation. I read this as Sleyca subtly indicating an underlying difference of values - the Informant seems to assume Manon inconvenienced or annoyed Alden at LeafSong, motivating him to seek revenge.

Nait02

Was a Yell in my throat a common turn of phrase for Artonans or a reference to the Elder's Croak?

Polaris

She said Alden had a yell in his throat when they spoke last

Kooikerhondjelover

I just re-read from beginning and I am where Alden meets Roden at Matadero - and now I hope Alden will burder him publicly in the near future!

Daedalus

> Victory through the acquisition and release of secrets And he doesn’t even have the facet for it yet!

Anthony Lutz

I hope we don't have to wait too long to find out if Ryada-bess is able to do her Ryada-best.

PeasOfCrab

In the midnight hour, he cried “Boe, Boe, Boe.” With a Rabbit Yell, he cried “Boe, Boe, Boe.”

DAK

I pressed the heart icon, but know that it would have been the gong if there was a gong.

Jean

Wow, that last letter sure is Intensity 99. Alden continues to fail being a quiet rabbit.

Barrett Fogarty

I think Sleyca is having too, too, too much fun with the Anesidora/Pandora "sender of gifts" motif. Elias's gift is to pack up knowledge into a case and then unleash it in eleven months It will be interesting to see what will happen to the world.

BeautifulBusinessBoi

Obviously, Alden should’ve taken a note from Zuko and started the letter to Ryada as “Hello, Alden here👋”

Julkur

I know that feeling. And some chapters were disappointingly short

Julkur

I wonder what the "standard thank you present for being this week’s star" is. Some infogear? A mug with MBF's name on it?

Together_Comic

Alden and his ability to charm the ever-loving hell out of people. Name a more Iconic duo, I'll wait.

MisterMaus

I believe it was the information block in the very next sentence. So people can't easily dig up stuff on him for 11 months

BeautifulBusinessBoi

Stu: Lute skips his classes?? Alden: he says the instruction is too basic and he’s mastered everything in the syllabus Stu: oh, a righteous scholarly exit, that makes sense

Stuart Brown

It feels like a little snowball that Sleyca has casually placed at the top of a hill. The resulting avalanche might be something like the Artonan Ambassador Bash'nor, unable to properly find out about this annoying avowed, seriously underestimating the dangers of messing with him in some future chapter and getting Alden'd because of it.

Matt DiMeo

Looks like MBF’s Sunday morning show is exactly 20 minutes long. That’s a thing we now know.

A Free Skeleton

It's obvious in hindsight: leaving aside commercials, that's how long all Saturday morning cartoons last.

MWF

Elias just blamed the Gloss for Alden's class choice. Granted that was a perfectly reasonable assumption but he sounded like one of us for a second and that cracked me up. It was the Glooooooss! Also yes, the ending was very lovely an poignant. I hadn't thought about how much Alden would relate to Ryada (she reminds me more of Kon) but it makes sense.

MWF

In fairness, Emban wouldn't have invited him if he hadn't charmed her first. I assume that invite was like 90% for Stus sake so he would have a friend along for the Here-to-There, but (a) that means she considers him a worthy enough friend for Stu and (b) that remaining 10% is probably because she enjoys his company too. Maybe she sees him primarily as a servant but that's still a big deal.

AutumnLeaves

"I’m sending you a picture of Everly Kim trying to keep her new exfoliating cloth away from everyone in our class who wanted to touch it. It was funny." I keep imagining Everly standing high on something (maybe a desk) with the exfoliating cloth held high like a flag, surrounded by students reaching for it.

50cant12

To think we all thought the Informant would find the auriad and instead Alden gets an 11 month peace shield on privacy

Mindsword

It looks to me like he's... not bored exactly but seeking ways to keep his mind active. His system could answer everything, but he set it up specifically to give him hints and puzzles to solve.

Gaffer

I’m picturing it clutching on her face like Dwight from the office doing his Hannibal Lecter impression with her flailing around fending off the horde of Washcloth Wanters

Neil

I found it strangely disappointing that Elias knows all of this. Like he is somehow intruding on the unique perspective that we, the readers, have on these events. Obviously he doesn’t have the whole picture, but things like the Hazel Manon events felt like a strange window into a tangle of coincidences that nobody else could see the whole of.

Lee

Great chapter. Almost perfect except I can't believe alden forgot to write/contact Kibby too 😳

Matt DiMeo

It was approaching plot hole territory that neither the informant nor his customers had gone and figured everything out. Boom! Hole filled!

The butler did it

Idk; it sounded to me like that's his provisional theory because he can't think of any other reason, but he doesn't like it. I bet he'll keep digging.

Francis

Alden is too precious! He would have been a great teacher.

VioletSummit

Don't feel too jealous, he's slightly less omniscient then we readers are, and puts in way more effort then us. 😁

Francis

Oh my, Alden has 11 months left on Anesidora me thinks...

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I'm into your Frog == Affixation theory. When Alden first accidentally stumbled onto being a wizard, he thought with time he'd get used to the feeling. But Mother let him know he won't. The feeling will never fade, and keep returning. Just like how Boe thought he'd forget about the frog in the rainforest, but the joke will never die. This frog thing will follow him for the rest of his life, he cannot escape it through either distance or time.

Francis

This chapter was really good. I cannot write well, so I can't say exactly why. But I felt so many different emotions, one after another, while reading almost every paragraph..

Francis

I also think Alden is the first with knight connections - even Neha, who is the oldest and most well connected, said she only saw knights from afar (before the submerger disaster)

Francis

And poor DurnMary. Her chance to get information on her favourite rabbit just passed.

Brandon Steele

I don't remember Boe knowing about the auriad and that he can do wizard magic. Did that happen back when Boe first appeared out of the cat?

Aspiring Moth

I'm sure if Aulia called personally Elias would tell her things. it's just that his info can't be bought through the informant's service

Ian T Hathaway

Fuck, so much excitement and tension in such little moments, and then you make me tear up right at the end. Sleyca, you are a mad genius.

Alexander Dupree

Those thank you notes were fantastic

Robert Mullins

Yep. It was when Alden found out about him being an unregistered before he got shipped back to Jeremy in cat form.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

I see it now Aulia’s gloss chain does not only work forwards in time, it also makes retroactive changes spanning the whole universe Therefore the backlash for her next gloss, where the positive effect is her learning about magic, is that affixation for an avowed who knows magic will retroactively always have been torturously painful (jk)

denatured

Ha! Oh noes, now she'll have to go on pure speculation and headcannon. How will she cope!

KB

Thank you for the chapter! Alden has reminded me that I need to write some thank you notes. Maybe mine will be 25% as eloquent as his.

DAK

Man, the OG Avowed are cold, cold so and sos. The Informer is a one man NSA; he defined his own ethics for his invasive skill and happily lets the world deal with the consequences. Giving an 11 month respite from invasion of privacy to an individual is admission that he is well aware his skill is indeed an invasion of privacy. But that’s just life, I guess —deal with it like everyone else. And Aulia—picks up the phone and calls her buddy to cover up her granddaughter’s little crime. Ahem, murder. Sure, sure, no problem. The whole thing really is interesting the way that played out, isn’t it? How much was magical fate and how much was her own nasty personality? Fascinating, fascinating. I wonder what’s for lunch? Makes me wonder how many skeletons the nice ones like Neha have buried in their own closets. And I also assume that if they figure out Alden has actual access to MAGIC, they are not going to let anything stop them from peeling it out of him one layer at a time. After asking nicely, of course.

WannaBeATree

It also works across dimentions, since it is the reason Sleyca even started writing the story. Forget Big Bang, Big Gloss is the true start!

PatienceHoney

I desperately want to see Ryada's reaction to Alden's letter. It's the kind of letter you get after spending concentrated time with someone new and it floors you how much of an impact you had on them or on each other. I am with those that have expressed the hope that Ryada may become a more prominent character in Alden’s story.

Matt DiMeo

I wonder what 11 months of informant privacy would cost if Alden was paying?

Shawn

ohh super important question time. Did MBF / the Informant figure out that Alden (and Stu) are indirectly the source of the Gokoratch song?

DAK

Along these lines, the young Hn’tyons are probably going to start popping over to Earth more, right? The art’hs voted against annexing to planet, so have stayed away since that loss, but Stu and the submerger and time seem to be weakening the need to politically stay away. As more young knights hang out with Alden and Stu, as Esh chats about snakes, as more bananas make the trans dimensional hop… I like to envision Knight tourists wandering around campus looking for Alden.

WannaBeATree

I mean . . . the wizzards will stop them . . . or the system. Or Alden himself, by moving to another planet . . . Not much they can do about it, since they are just a resource world. The only reason they exist, is because the wizards allow it and that they would feel bad if they died out. ... kinda like pets, now that I think about it. Maybe there is a truth to some allegations...

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I think I see why the Informant's alignment and mindset with his skill has let him become so powerful. He is always, always thinking of information as warfare, as a struggle against others. He doesn't poke around casually with no regard for the value or cost of invasion of privacy, he has set himself rules and rituals that make information precious and that challenge him to grow. He makes privacy a reward that can be earned by strength of merit, making it a valuable part of his relation with the universe and making every interaction with avowed a sort of struggle, even if they don't know they're part of it. If he ignored the idea of privacy completely it wouldn't be worth as much to him, and the struggle would be purely a matter of technology rather than something that involves *him*. He actively thinks of himself as being "The Informant," which reminded me of how in Alden's strongest skill moments he thinks of *himself* as being Bearer of All Burdens. He's not just playing a role, he becomes the role. Elias is creepy, but he isn't as bad and creepy as he could be, or as someone else might be if they were suddenly dropped into his position. I don't think it's a coincidence that the most powerful information guy also has such an exacting personal moral code.

J Reynolds

I had a Soupverse dream the night before last. I thought I'd share it. I was in Rome with Roman Velra, in the uncatalogued bit of the Vatican archives. This was an unauthorized trip off-island, so we were trying to keep things hush-hush and were passing ourselves off as normal visitors. I was a Wright. Since Roman was very eye-catching, I'd made a special hat for him that made his model good looks and avowed charisma less noticeable. I said "Find what we're looking for," and he did his stuff-finding thing, and came up with a hit. "Found it!" he said. We went to the box he indicated, and found a score of Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 3. We handed it over to a music expert at Sotheby's, who was sure it would fetch an amazing sum. (An out-of-the-dream aside: that cello concerto is a real thing, but it has not come down to us. We have two of Haydn's cello concertos, which are staples of the classical genre, but not the third. Which is a great loss. What gives me hope IRL is that the first two were lost for 150 years and only rediscovered in 1951 (the first) and 1961 (the second). So there's at least a chance that the last one is still out there.) So Roman and I continued our search in another archive. How we got from Rome to Sotheby's to another archive I don't know – dream logic. This time we were on the trail of Cardenio, a play by Shakespeare. We know Shakespeare wrote it but it has also been lost. The librarian in charge of the archive was suspicious of us, and called the authorities for 'suspected unregistered avowed'. So Roman and I had to flee. That's where the dream ended. I'd like to think that we exfiltrated wherever we were and made it back to Anesidora without being caught. I'll be 72 in 2040, so presumably I kept myself in good shape. Or maybe had at least one rejuvenation with a Healer. At any rate, Roman and I made a good team. I hope that we're able to find other lost works of art in the Soupverse.

PatienceHoney

Sleyca sleyca sleyca... how could you tease us with so many nibbles of information but not reveal this yummie morsel!!

PatienceHoney

I choose to think he writes her very often, telling her nearly everything that we are learning. I mean what can he hold back if she chastised him for not opening the kitchen cabinets to show her their contents...

Francis

Wow thanks for putting in words exactly how I felt about him while reading this chapter. You are hitting the nail on the head. I also felt he was creepy, but surprisingly little for a guy with his tools and powers

Francis

Interesting that the Informant didn't suspect that Manon might have used her abilities on Hazel to make her go feral

Francis

I felt such relief when Alden and Boe texted most of their conversation 😂

VP

Conspiracy theory: Big Gloss, alien style, is what led to Earth being discovered. The Palace wanted more people using wordchains, and someone goes and finds a planet with the perfect hands and voice. Unfortunately, the first powerful chainer makes it hard to access chains on earth and they don't catch universally.

JJ Hunter

The opening of this chapter makes me think that in some way not entirely metaphorical, MBF is both the neighborhood and the dog, and that the master is both himself and the domain of his authority.

Andrew Simpson

Manon couldn't really do that. She could just position things, or encourage things, and make situations best prepared to result in outcomes. She influenced hazel, but mostly she just put her finger on an already Imbalanced scale. It could have happened regardless, and was close to happening for sure. Basically hazle was already primed to go feral, and looking for a reason to do so, and Manon just gave her that reason without her knowing it.

Andrew Simpson

I don't think it's for sale. Considering he is probably wealthy enough for money to be a non-issue, I think it's reserved for special rewards to balance his weird internal privacy/information economy.

Jess

I remember when Boe refusing to talk on the phone seemed paranoid.

Clint

Tftc. Excited to see how Elias reacts when he realizes Stuart is Stu-art’h. It feels important that Alden is now acknowledging that there’s a yell stuck in his throat. And that he’s not going to be an Earth superhero.

Alan Miller

People think that the luck of the Gloss was in bringing Alden to the Velras at the cost of Lute's eye, but it's so much more than that. The luck of the Gloss for the Velras is going to be the replacement of Aulia and her plans for the family with Lute, and the cost is going to be bourne by Aulia.

PatienceHoney

“Magic is the process by which we wizards prove our existence and assert our dominion over all else that exists..." It is like the way Elias is holding dominion over his spot. Edit: the above sentence is very jumbled. Instead I meant to express: It looks like Elias is trying to implement this definition of magic through more literal dominion over his places (hone, neighborhood, island).

J Reynolds

Depends on what the exact wording of the Gloss was. "Get Chainer for Hazel" would presumably get what was on the tin. "Get Chainer for Hazel in the most advantageous way for the family" might have different results. Alden-like results, in fact.

ghostb1tch

oh wow this was a really good chapter. I think that it might be one of my favorites yet. is that weird? it’s not dramatic or action-packed or pushing the plot forwards by leaps and bounds, but one of my main motivations for reading super supportive is the character interactions and growth. I like that Elias has the rule about his favorite “show” being immune to information requests for 11 months. sometimes I complain about Boe, but I like that Alden has more patience for him than I do, because then that patience pays off for phone calls like these. the letters at the end were really, really good. the last one especially. I really had no clue what he was going to say when he first tried starting the letter. I hope he finds his other earbud.

JJ Hunter

I keep coming back to Alden's letters, especially his last one to Ryada-bess. The kindness of them, and the integrity of them. Alden isn't just saying pleasantries for form's sake; he's showing respect, and also speaking to the range of what each knight showed him during their shared experiences.

JJ Hunter

To Bithe, who hurt Alden with harsh language critique, defended Alden from Olget, and asked about Alden's home after sharing his own struggles with 'home', Alden affirms gladness they met, offers subtle reassurance that Olget's act really was not something anyone could have reasonably expected (implied: Bithe did not fail his duty by failing to anticipate Olget's attack on the wand), follows up on telling Bithe more about his new home ('mostly safe'...'mostly peaceful'), wishes Bithe and his chosen family the same treasures of safety and peace even if he know it's unlikely, and closes with a hope that is also a reminder that Alden remains aware of the language differences Bithe previously asserted and he's taking the risk of trying again anyway. I think it's telling that Alden does not put any expectation of further meeting in the letter to Bithe; he's looking to part on good terms, but not necessarily presume on further acquaintance. If Bithe wants to offer a more active welcome to seeing Alden again, that's on Bithe to signal; Alden's already been burnt once.

Bead

I would dearly love to see Ryada’s reaction to getting that letter

Kim Enteiu

I tried to like this twice, but it wouldn’t let me. Is there a likier like button I’m supposed to press?

Chris

Its cool that Elias's rating system seems to have a standard reward built in. 1 month info immunity for each star. Seems like Alden just missed out on a full year!

denatured

Alden confirming he doesn't know the difference between friendly banter and flirting. Imagine him saying some of the stuff he says to Boe to Natalie. "I just want you to look at me the same way you look at paper turkeys." This whole time he's been treating her like one of his usual pals, and here's a reminder that the way he interacts with his usual pals is really, really flirty. No awareness at all *facepalm*

Jason Harpster

Get the feeling both of them just dodged a bullet there. Enjoy your year off. .......FUuuuuuuu This means Stu isn't coming for a visit does it?!?!?!

Glitter Rabbit (C)

I post the same comment underneath every chapter, but I would like to write another one expressing my appreciation for this chapter in particular. It is everything I love about soup and Alden. Thank you!

Casey

These letters are so touching.

Lyssur

I think if anything, these Informant chapters prove Sleyca is a cat person. Note Victor, a loving, cherished companion who provides refuge to Boe. Note grivecks, the deadliest, funniest species, beloved by Kibby (who has impeccable taste), referred often as panther-like when being described. In contrast? For dogs? We have MBF, a spy who is always watching. Though I suppose she could be a ryeh'bt person.

MWF

Two further thoughts upon reflection. First that it's kind of funny that Elias is putting so much thought into who and what Alden is and yet we close out the chapter showing that in a very real way Alden is kind of doing the same thing because he's not really sure either. Lol, they're both getting closer to the truth I guess? Second I think something about this chapter and this arc really makes me appreciate Alden's rabbit-ness. Alden wanted to be a support hero, like Hannah, and the Rabbits really lean into that supportiveness don't they? I think in a way the fact that Bearer was "hidden" in Rabbit could be potentially interpreted in retrospect as a warning/hint about the nature of a power that really relies on the symbolism and burden of serving others. It really wouldn't have fit in as well in a standard combat-oriented class. I think in a way--as much as I feel for poor sleep deprived Alden!--it was probably kind of good thing to go from following along with knights to watching Rabbits in action. It kind of covers both aspects of a power that doesn't quite fit into either sphere, plus the duality of being a small, odd fish in a big pond vs. a big, odd fish in a small pond which is only going to get worse when the truth comes out. (EDIT to add bonus thoughts: Glad Alden got to talk to Boe after all! They both probably kinda needed that. And also that Alden will finally get to sleeeep)

MWF

I wonder if he'll get a bonus twelve stars when Elias finds out he's the first human wizard? I feel like if he gets two votes in every class vote the least Elias can do is give him a bonus year of privacy.

E Estevez

I don’t recall a point during the waves chapters where Alden was laughing. Am I misremembering something or is this new?

Terrestrial_Biped

I really liked this one too. (I think the prize is one month of immunity for every point Elias rates the show, rather than a flat eleven months. Hence the "out of twelve" scale; grand prize is one year's immunity.)

Dogs have sniffer powers, which we know are creepy and invasive. And my past dogs have DEFINITELY wanted to watch me constantly no matter how private the moment was. Yes, dogs are spies. /s

In a lower thread, @Tori, Writher #1 Fan and I began a discussion that I wanted to raise to the top for more input. Stuart is right and English is missing nuanced words for different types of friendships. I quote from the master of chicken entertainment, Gonzo the Great, "There's not a word yet For old friends who just met." An example was raised of a word that failed to take off is Bosom Friend, which is a Kindred Spirit of a friend (Anne of Green Gables). My challenge to us is this. We need to develop more/better descriptive words for Alden's friendships in the story that we can, as a group, begin to use out of story to build the idea that friendship is nuanced. I would love to hear if other languages have better words for different types of friends. For example, Alden calls Boe his brother (at dinner before Ripples) and that somewhat fits, but how else could we describe best friends, neglected by their adults who raised each other? I suggest they are your "copa" since all their pa/rent figures are doing is paying the rent. They are together doing everything else other than the rent. All suggestions welcome for better words for types of friendships! Definitions or example friendships required.

It’s a fascinating topic. I asked ChatGPT for English words for this. Here is it’s output: Yes, English does have words and phrases that can indicate different degrees of closeness—but unlike some other languages (e.g. Japanese or Arabic), it lacks a fixed, formal system for mapping out those relational distances. Instead, it relies on a mix of contextual labels, descriptive phrases, and social cues to signal degrees of intimacy. Here’s a general spectrum from closest to most distant, with common English terms and how they tend to be used: ⸻ 🔒 Intimate / Closest Circle • Immediate family — parents, siblings, children. • Spouse / Partner — legally or emotionally committed. • Best friend — usually denotes a deep emotional bond. • Close friend — a strong connection, emotional support, regular contact. • Chosen family — friends or non-blood relations who serve the emotional role of family. ⸻ 🧭 Trusted Inner Circle • Old friend — emphasizes depth or duration of the relationship. • Good friend — trusted and meaningful, but not necessarily daily contact. • Confidant — someone trusted with personal or sensitive matters. • Mentor / Mentee — relational closeness based on guidance and trust. ⸻ 🫱 Friendly / Familiar • Friend — broad and ambiguous: could range from a close friend to someone you simply like. • Colleague / Coworker — professional relationship, sometimes overlaps into friendship. • Peer — someone in a similar position (socially, professionally). • Buddy / Pal / Mate — casual term for a friendly connection (often gendered or cultural in tone). ⸻ 🧍Known / Loose Connections • Acquaintance — someone you know by name or face but aren’t close to. • Contact — neutral term, often used for networking. • Associate — often formal or work-related. • Familiar face — someone often seen but not personally known. ⸻ 📦 Distant or Impersonal • Stranger — no personal connection. • Public — people in general, beyond personal ties. ⸻ 🧩 Other Useful Phrases (to fine-tune nuance) • “We’re close.” • “We go way back.” • “We know each other through work.” • “We’re more friendly than friends.” • “We’re in touch, but not close.” • “Just someone I know.” ⸻ Optional: A Custom Spectrum (If You Need Precision) In professional or personal writing, people sometimes build their own spectrum (e.g., inner circle → close friend → friend → acquaintance → contact) to clarify nuances, especially in research, design, or systems work.

“Are we sure Aulia didn’t drown the country a little bit on purpose to protect Hazel?” “It isn’t likely that—” Huh, so the most informed non-Contract AI we’ve met thinks it’s not *impossible* Aulia would drown Anesidora for Hazel. Just unlikely.

My guess is that the spell Stu's future skill is designed off of was the one used to discover worlds like Earth. You take one item - a bipedal sapient - and move it towards something similar to it, punching through dimensions until they meet.

Re-reading 161: “Years ago, he decided to delay a <> goal. A <> to re-open the way to a place that was abandoned to chaos not too long before our people discovered yours. He returns to that campaign now.” Stu is talking about the Primary being away for many more months. Sounds to me like its likely he tries to re-open the passage to Gorgon‘s world.

J Reynolds

“Years ago, he decided to delay a < long-sought > goal. A < campaign > to re-open the way to a place that was abandoned to chaos not too long before our people discovered yours. He returns to that campaign now.” (You need to have a space after the '<' symbol and before the '>'or text doesn't fill)

I kind of feel like all of the original skills would be Ryeh-b't class and that's why it's the one required class that all races must have and why Ryeh-b't skills are designed to use a maximum of your free authority at affixation. Could be a failure of imagination, but I'm not sure where else you would even put them except that mind type ones could go in Sway. I guess one that was very focused on your body could go in Brute as a wacky, non-standard option. And I guess I'm not positive The Informant doesn't have one himself, so something like that could go in Wright. Shapers are too flexible. Adjusters need too many spell impressions, though you could have one that was designed to help wizards with their spells and then weight it down with the spell impressions. Healers seem to be too general. Figurinists and Meisters more generally are too tied up with specific external objects, at least for how I understand uncapped skills, but a more general puppeteer or Meisters of All might work. So I can find places to put some of the others, even if they don't feel quite right, but I'd still mostly bet on Ryeh-b't being the home for all of the original Avowed skills.

@ Gaffer I mean, a lot of stuff isn't "impossible." It's not "impossible" that the joke theory I drop on Chem-trail conspiracy people that Vampire Elvis flies around in his invisible magic UFO trying to blot out the sun through pixie dust exhaust is true, but it certainly isn't likely.

Adamanus

So MBF doesn't know about Gorgon? Or I suppose the odds that Alden had a connection with Gorgon strong enough to lead to him injuring himself to give him skill advice are vanishingly low.

Michaellogan

Sleyca mentioned it much further down in the comment section. Infogear is illegal in most of the world. I don’t remember if she outright stated that there were no recordings but even then it was very much implied.

I just re-noticed a loose end that is bothering me to death now that I’ve seen it. In 104 Lute gave permission to alden to ask Stu about Chainer and the Palace. And he hasn’t done it yet! This is now the most important thing.

Kooikerhondjelover

Yes, I was hoping to learn more about it, but I understand he had more pressing stuff to talk about so far. He might have forgotten.

JJ Hunter

Thinking today about how the end of MBF's show ends on Alden's smile ('brilliant'), and how tantalizing Elias finds the hints of Alden's secrets, and the last in person interaction Alden had with Worli Ro-den, where Ro was *so* curious about where Alden was going with his suitcase and his fancy new outfit, and Alden just smiled slightly and disappeared.

Kooikerhondjelover

Guys, re-reading is so much fun! I just realized that Leo the post box was the sender of the Pizza delivered to Alden during thanksgiving ( Chapter 173). I wonder when he will investigate into this particular post drop…

Jeff Petkau

I wonder, if Alden started keeping his books in his traveler's bag and trusting it to keep them safe, would that strengthen the connection between them and help his bag find him better? I hope he does, because it bothers me every time he spends a pile of money to move his books to/from system storage without having confirmed that it's necessary.

Stuart Brown

The first time I read this, I misinterpreted his long pause as he considered the issue. I thought the faint targetting ability he feels came the OTHER part of his skill. As I recall, it says something about the postbox being "gifted to the city" by such and such. I thought this general gift thing was Alden discovering that anything gifted to a large group of which he was arguably a component was enough to allow him to use his skill on it in absence of a direct, immediate instruction from a burdener, which would significantly relax his skills requirement. He'd just have to hear something like "anything in the gym is a gift to the student body" and be picking up sandbags left right and centre in future. Also, apropos of nothing- I can't wait to read the bit where his gym class see him casually pick up water in whatever shape he wants.

Chapter Predictions!

Aspiring Moth

Lexi is a danger badger when he arrives back at the apartment on Sunday night

Aspiring Moth

I bet Mother stole Alden's spellbook from Stuart's shelf. it seems like exactly the sort of thing that she would do given her planning ahead and predictions for the future

C. Adkins

I didn’t miss a “Sunday is skip day” post right? And if I didn’t. Please Sleyca, do not take this as a message to rush or that I am impatient. Just checking with the soup-mind as to whether I keep checking before sleep lol

WannaBeATree

Maybe from their huge basement? The one people can get lost in? I could imagine there being a blanket permission for the system to use most of the things in there and any favours owed to 'pay' for helping the family.

Jacob Harris

Totally unfair that Elias is so likable as a character. He doesn't deserve to be so likable. >:( I hope Alden finds out what he's been doing before I get caught up on the published chapters, I'm dying to see his reaction. Unrelated to that. VERY glad Alden saw some of the parallels between his situations and Ryada's after all.

Jacob Harris

"The first time I cast it, I think I almost set my room on fire, which wasn’t anything like what my book described. It’s more demanding of me than I expected, too. I’m not strong enough to keep it up for long." I wonder if it's actually SUPPOSED to be a combat spell. Maybe the taxing part is the way he's holding its power back, when he's not supposed to, to make it a flashlight.

Loser Me

Truly, I know it's platonic and all, but his banter will feed my shipper heart for ages <3

Nik Dunlap

I just realised that MBF probably stands for Mans Best Friend lol

Msharlo1

I'm rereading the chapter and realizing that the golden retriever is much more probably the dog equivalent of an Android and the MBF's main body.
