As the end of MPE approached, Alden hadn’t shaken off all his stress, but the reactions of other students to his Winston fight were surprising him in a a good way.

The faculty had avoided pairing him and the speedster for the duels that took place right after Thanksgiving, even though they should have been randomly assigned to fight each other more than once before now. Of course the others had noticed that. But because Alden had been away or studying so often during periods when he could have been socializing with them, he hadn’t realized how many of them had been waiting to see how the matchup went. And, it turned out, rooting for him to do well.

Even one person who he would have thought might want to see him lose.

“Why won’t you fight me with a serious weapon like that?” Reinhard complained while he watched Alden try to put together a new Winsterminator in the practice area. Lexi had ended the first one’s career in an explosion of sand when Writher sliced open the bag. “I wouldn’t have any problem with you if you fought me like that.”

You would still have problems with me every time I won, Alden thought.

Reinhard had good qualities. He also had a tendency to bury them under his bad qualities when things weren’t going his way.

“You’re one of the only other people in class I’ve made a custom weapon for. And it worked. Which is proof it was a serious weapon even if it looked a little funny.”

So funny Alden had rewatched that duel more than any of his others.

Reinhard grumbled like Alden was giving him a hard time, but then he said, “Congratulations. For Winston. I haven’t seen it yet, but everyone’s talking about it. He’s not exactly a brilliant duelist, but he is a rank above you, and he had it in for you. Even if you two had an argument, he’s being too swaybrained about it. Maybe this will make him shut up.”

“The argument was him lying about me to entertain people on the internet and me arriving to make him stop.”

Reinhard twirled one of his arrows. He’d done it three times since he’d walked up. Alden was wondering if it was some competitive impulse that had developed because he’d seen Alden spinning his own weapon a few times over the past hour. “Whatever. He’s just getting on my nerves. The other day when your Rabbit friends came to the dorm, after you all left, some of us were joking around about you in my apartment, and he was ruining the atmosphere.”

“You were talking about me?”

“It wasn’t like we were saying anything you’d be mad about. You have to know that two of them have over-Apexed their Appeal, and then there was that super cool girl who showed off her skill by making Mehdi’s watch look a thousand argold better, and the funny one in the skirt asked us where ‘Pigeon Picture Boy’ was. They were so flashy as soon as they walked in. And the blonde girl was cooking for us within ten seconds of showing up. So we were talking about it like, ‘Guess Alden’s not coming back to the hero program. The Rabbit bosses finally sent in the elite team to lure him home. We’ll never hear from him again.’”

Alden grinned. “They did look like an elite team, and they did take me away to see the people who come closest to qualifying as Rabbit bosses.”

“It was normal, corny stuff. But Winston can’t hear your name, or Max’s, and stay normal. He made it so uncomfortable that I was shoveling spaghetti into my mouth so that I could use going downstairs for a second serving as an excuse to get away. And it was my apartment.” Reinhard shrugged. “Anyway. Congrats.”

“What did Winston say to make it that uncomfortable, though?”

Reinhard looked toward the high ceiling. “It was something about you going back to Matadero…I’m not going to repeat it…but you should definitely beat him in duels a few more times. If it wasn’t just luck.”

Alden imagined Winston butting in with something about how Alden deserved to be killed by a demon during one of his visits to Matadero instead of being carried off by a bunch of fun Rabbits.

The speedster had picked himself up after their duel, but he was staying as far from Alden as possible when they were both in the practice area. And he was being uncharacteristically serious in his duels against people he usually won against. Actually fighting without thinking about how he looked fighting.

So I sobered him up for at least one day. Not sure he deserved the favor.

“It wasn’t just luck!” he called after Reinhard as the archer left. “Acknowledge the true power of my contraptions!”

“He said luck?” Ignacio had arrived, sliding fast across a melting ice patch Everly had left behind. “No. <<Wrong. I watched the duel against Winston. You were not lucky.>> Excellent. Good duel. Congratulations! <<Fight me like that?>>”

“But you’ll just dodge and put a knife to my throat anyway, Shrike.”

<<I’ll hold still.>>

“Don’t say that. That makes me feel pitiful. Muy triste.

<<I’ll hold still, and I’ll focus on attacking your weapon,>> Ignacio explained.

Is the idea that he’ll send a flock of knives into the sandbag to see if he can redirect it? Or attack the preserved paracord handle while I’m flicking it around?

Either would be an interesting experiment. But…

“If we get a chance to try it at the end of a class,” Alden said. “Yes.”

<<At the beginning, it would be a better test.>>

Alden felt his face scrunch.

<<Don’t look like that.>>

The Meisters knew Alden rarely presented them with opportunities to try their weapons out against anything he was protecting with his magic. Writher got more attempts than any of the other deadly tools because Writher and Alden lived together, and he was being a good roommate.

“What if I went to Superlatives one day?” Alden suggested. “Or Meister club. Not to participate in a way that would annoy anyone but just as a training target for you to use? You’ll fatigue my skill fast finding out what you can do, and I’ll leave.”

Ignacio brightened. <<That would be fun. I’ll ask Ash.>>

“Ash?”

<<He’s the faculty advisor for Superlatives.>>

“Shrike! I’m here! Practice with me!” Marsha’s shout made them both look over. She was shifting her weapon into glaive mode.

<<I’d better go before she starts swinging.>>

“Remind her that the practice area isn’t just a bigger dueling block with human-shaped objects in the way.”

<<I don’t think it will work today. You heard about Elites?>>

“Probably not. I wasn’t around for gossip this weekend.”

<<They sent Febri a callback and Marsha a rejection.>>

“I’m a little surprised,” said Alden, lowering his voice. “I know she’s got a one-track mind, but the one track seems to suit what they’re doing.”

<<Her dad was an alumni of their program, and he was embarrassing for them. He was caught pretending to be his own nemesis, committing crimes so that it looked like there was a dangerous unregistered for him to fight. Even if she doesn’t have anything to do with him, they might not want to have her around as a reminder.>>

“SHRIKE!”

Poor Marsha, thought Alden. For the first time ever. Maybe she’s got that S-rank fighting obsession because in her mind it’s like the opposite of her dad being a phony?

A minute later, Ignacio sprinted past, pursued by a girl who definitely preferred to interpret “practice area” as “free dueling space.”

On the other hand, she looks thrilled to be chasing him down. Maybe she just likes it.

A couple more people came up to Alden to say congrats before class ended. It wasn’t like everyone was a fan of his work. He caught some glares and wary glances, and there was one comment from a Brute who sometimes hung out with Winston about how things would have been different if Winston had a weapon, too.

But finding out so many of them were glad for his success was a boost. I thought it would just be my roommates and Max who appreciated how I did in one duel. This makes me proud I put some extra effort in.

He found himself smiling as he packed up.

On his way out of the gym, Finlay sprang in front of him to declare that he was taking him out to celebrate. Alden protested that it was going overboard to celebrate one single person’s duel when they’d all just had several of them. But he didn’t protest it too hard with Haoyu making restaurant suggestions and Astrid diving in to say she expected to be taken out for dinner by the whole class when she beat Tuyet.

“Since Astrid will never earn that dinner, that’s more money I can spend for your meal,” Finlay said. “What’s a place you like in Apex? Who should we invite?”

******

Ten of them crowded around two tables at the back of the diner. The checkerboard floor, the glass-fronted fridge full of familiar canned drinks,  and the items listed on the plastic-coated menus were nostalgic for Alden. But the Anesidoran touches were great, too. Their waitress was an Object Shaper who wore harem pants and Artonan jewelry with a cut-off Celena North University shirt. Whatever they ordered left the kitchen and traveled to them through the air under her direction, and dishes that they emptied took flight a minute or two later.

Everyone raised sodas, milkshakes, cups of tea, and decaf coffees to Alden’s victory. Then they did the same for various victories the others wanted to be complimented on. And finally they saluted Winston’s new roommates—whoever they might be.

They chattered about duels, Christmas, and school while they ate the kinds of meals you could only put together at a place that served American breakfast food and dinner food simultaneously. If their volume and Jeffy popping out of his chair constantly was irritating the other people eating there, Alden didn’t really notice it.

“I just like wintry-looking things,” Everly was saying. She sat beside Kon at one end of the table. They were supposed to be splitting a basket of buffalo chicken wings and an order of eggs Benedict. She didn’t seem to notice Kon was scarfing all the chicken. “It’s the same as people who have a bunch of accessories in their favorite color, but instead of one color, I have a theme.”

“I want a theme,” said Astrid, taking a fry from a shared plate in the middle of the table and leaning across Max to dunk it in one of the sauces Alden had gotten to go with his hash browns and plant-based scramble. “Jeffy’s aquatic theme will be sharks, and his land-based theme will be grilling.”

Jeffy lifted half a cheeseburger into the air proudly.

“Lexi’s theme should be that black feather makeup he wore to class the other day. Max’s theme could be—”

“My theme will be asking you why you don’t order your own spicy mustard dip if you like it that much.” Max was trying to wipe a drop of it off his sleeve.

“Next time I will. This time Alden had an ordering advantage. He’s eaten here before and knows what’s good.”

“Kon,” Max said, “if it’s not a problem—”

“A stain!” Kon gasped. “My favorite!”

He’d gotten burger grease off of Jeffy’s jacket a few minutes ago.

“Kon’s the kind of hero people actually want around. I keep waiting for someone to shout, ‘We can’t do this without a Dura Brute!’ in an everyday setting, but it never happens.” Haoyu was sitting across the table from Alden. “What were you saying about Ignacio?”

“He wants me to try to hit him with the weapon a few times,” said Alden. “I asked him if I could do it at Superlatives instead of in class.”

“The Rabbit has taken out an A-rank Speed Brute, and now he wants to fight the entire S-rank club,” Kon said, checking out the stain on Max’s shirt. “I look forward to it.”

Lexi, Everly, and Max were all giving Alden raised eyebrows.

“Did you think they’d actually let you go?” Lexi asked.

“I did offer to do Meister club, too. Ignacio picked Superlatives.”

“Meister club’s going to have a reduced number of gym meetings next term,” Lexi said.

“I don’t think it would be a problem.” Lucille, sitting at the end of the table with a Cobb salad, had been the quietest member of their group tonight. But she’d still been more talkative than normal. Alden was glad he’d invited her. “People can be overprotective of their floor time, but if it’s just for a few minutes and Ignacio gets it pre-approved, nobody should be mad about it.”

“Superlatives is full of normal students like any other club,” said Finlay. “Marsha’s the one who’ll whinge about Alden being there. And to quiet Marsha down all Shrike has to do is promise to fight her next. You might have to wait for your chance, though, Alden. With all the people volunteering to train us lately it’s been crowded.”

“Finlay…” Everly said hesitantly. “Are you staying? Have you decided?”

Everyone knew she meant the Elites program.

Finlay winced.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“I was excited about being invited. And I thought I’d go. But what if it’s like being with a bunch of S-rank Winstons who I won’t have a break from even on the weekends?”

“Why would they be S-rank Winstons?” Alden asked.

“The worst thing about living with him is having someone who insists on competing every second whether I feel like it or not,” said Finlay. “‘How many followers did you gain last night? How fast did you drink that cup of juice?’”

“How fast can you shower?”

“Don’t remind me. It’s been shite like that constantly. I know Elites wouldn’t be those little things. But it’s supposed to be more competition than here. All day. Every day. With them tossing us out if we don’t keep up. And if it’s like that, won’t I go mad? I want to be the best, but I can’t be the best if I go mad. So maybe not. I’ve got until Friday to tell them.”

“Vandy’s grandfather didn’t like the idea of it,” said Everly. “So she’s not going. I thought Tuyet definitely wouldn’t go, no matter what, but she seemed to be thinking about it until she heard Vandy was saying no. Maricel’s only around for about ten minutes at a time, but Tuyet says she talked to Fragment, and Fragment’s advising her to stay at CNH. So she probably will?”

“You must’ve worried you were going to lose all three roommates,” said Haoyu.

“I wondered if I would. It looks like we’ll be together again.” She reached for the basket that had held the buffalo wings and saw that it now held nothing but gnawed bones. “Kon!”

They ordered more wings for Everly and slices of pie for dessert. They all  took pens and styluses out of their bags and tried spinning them. Alden and the other globies ended up answering questions about home.

“You should tell your aunt to order special wedding supplies here on Anesidora.” Astrid was moving the salt and pepper shakers so that a bowl of extra whipped cream could land. “And then you can take it all with you when you go. It’s one of the perks of having an Avowed relative.”

Alden had just mentioned that he expected to attend Aunt Connie’s wedding sometime next year.

“And you should buy your American friends—if they’re real—something that they can’t get at home.”

“When did you guys all decide my friends weren’t real?” Alden asked.

“Right before pie,” said Haoyu.

“They’re fake,” said Astrid. “For sure. You were a loner in your old high school, but then you met us…”

“There are a few pictures of them on my Trime from like a year and a half ago. I told you they’re the reason I like this diner.”

“A year and a half ago.” Max shook his head. “Only a few pictures.”

You’re getting in on this? Hang on. I’ll introduce you all to them. It’s only two hours later there, so they’re probably still up.”

[Alden: Boe, I’m at a diner with a bunch of people from school who want me to prove that my Chicago friends are real. That’s you. Want to take a call on your cell if you’re awake?]

[Alden: Jeremy, you up? I’m hanging out with classmates at a diner, and I told them about you. They want proof that you exist.]

They both came through, answering from their bedrooms at home and appearing on everyone’s interface.

“Alden’s American friends, our diner has twelve kinds of pie,” Astrid said after introductions had been made. Her hair was slowly getting longer and turning yellow blonde.

“Seriously? Ours only has four unless there’s a special,” Jeremy replied. “But the coconut cream is addictive. Right, Boe?”

Jeremy followed several of Alden’s classmates online because they sometimes mentioned Alden, or posted things like the gokoratch song video in which he could be spotted. He seemed thrilled to be chatting with a bunch of Avowed at eleven o’clock at night. And Boe was being a good sport.

“The coconut cream is human-style magic,” Boe agreed.

“I got coconut cream.” Jeffy was holding up a forkful of it. “Alden beat Winston up.”

“What wonderful news,” said Boe.

“You’re beating people up, Alden?” Jeremy clucked his tongue.

“In MPE,” Alden said. “There was no lasting damage.”

“I wonder if Winston would agree with that.”

“He hit him with a fifty-kilo sandbag, you guys!”

“The fight lasted a few seconds. Alden’s improved since we started school.”

“Winston was so sure he was going to win he bet his room.”

“He offended the mad Rabbit of Matadero, and that was the end for him.”

“Send us more giardiniera. Lute ate it all on ramen.”

“Haoyu’s ordering groceries from America? Can we?”

“Why would we? We have stores.”

“I want a deep dish pizza from actual Chicago.”

“I’ll show you how fast I can freeze a glass of lemon-lime soda if you tell me an embarrassing story about Alden.”

Boe’s polite smile suddenly turned genuine. “One time, Alden climbed onto the roof of a stranger’s house—”

“Don’t tell them this one,” Alden protested.

Jeremy, who had heard this story before, was already grinning in anticipation.

“—because he saw a cat up there he thought was his. And he thought it was having a medical issue. We were like five miles from his own neighborhood, so I don’t know why he was so sure it was his cat.”

“You helped me get onto that roof!”

“Of course the animal ran away from the sketchy guy who was trying to bother it. The owner of the house drove up at exactly the same time, and for some reason, Alden was just standing around where she could see him when she got out of her car.”

“Because you hid from her and weren’t there to help me get down! This story is just as embarrassing for you.”

“He was so nervous that he kept saying, ‘There is a cat here. There is,” instead of using the past tense, so basically he was hanging out on some lady’s roof in broad daylight, swearing he could see a cat that clearly wasn’t there.”

They were all cackling and snorting. They were laughing so hard that they were choking on their pie.

And it didn’t feel bad at all to laugh until his stomach ached, to accept over-the-top praise for a duel, and to be embarrassed in the middle of this group of people he was growing closer to little by little.

Alden looked at Boe making them all laugh. Maybe one day he’ll change his mind and come here.

He looked at Jeremy. We haven’t really drifted that far apart.

It didn’t feel bad to belong, for a while, on Anesidora.

Thanks Sleyca! Omg Alden and Stuart are so precious, but there's always this worry in the back of my mind when Alden will have to tell about his authority.

A Free Skeleton

I wonder who Reinhart thought had over-Apexed appeal, aside from Natalie? Lute might have some competition.

Gaffer

Good lord I love this series. Fast scattered thoughts: > two of them have over-Apexed their Appeal, and then there was that super cool girl - “super cool” huh…Reinhard/Hadiza?? Reinhadiza? > …who showed off her skill by making Mehdi’s watch look a thousand argold better - and Hadiza’s lucky she didn’t take another floor nap from prettying up an Informant key - I loved the mixed gatherings of all of Alden’s found friends and family. This chapter felt really warm and fuzzy. - And oddly foreboding, like every luck wordchain has a bad half on the horizon. You wouldn’t do that, Sleyca, would you? It’s all rhye-b’ts and rainbows and vegan cupcakes landing in the car from here on out, right?? - Wait, another unnamed Object Shaper in CNH? - Object Shaper/Other Object Shaper?? Osoos??? - I loved the little glimpses into motivation and thought processes from the cast of characters - Reinhard, Marsha, Ignacio, Astrid, and… - The bit of insight into Finlay was great in particular, we haven’t really had a look behind the curtain there! > Reinhard looked toward the high ceiling. “It was something about you going back to Matadero…I’m not going to repeat it…but you should definitely beat him in duels a few more times. If it wasn’t just luck.” - OK now I’m REALLY curious. Alden’s mind isn’t nasty enough to guess what it really was - Who IS going to Li Jean? So many invited people seem to not be going. Intriguing. - Really nice seeing Boe and Jeremy “meet” the CNH kids - interactions we never got on other visits from them and Connie. - Man Boe feels balanced on a knife edge though. Like every conversation exposes him to danger, or might scare him off. He’s more feral than the kyat, though he faked it well here. - Poor Winston has only made friends with unnamed As in class, and kind-of Olive via sweatbands.

Cyrus McEnnis

I was hoping for a recovery sauna duel review, but 101% will take a diner and calls to not just Stu but Boe & Jezza as well ; )

ThoMiCroN

in a a good way-> in a good way*

Robert Smart

I hope there’s a mini chap with just stu’s commentary of the duel.

Krae Z Hand

Just realized Kon is basically a rabbit. Like, he's an adjuster, but he's rabbit themed. Holy shit. That's such a parallel. Like, he has one super useful niche spell, like how rabbits all have super niche abilities, but he's more useful for exotic circumstances. Like, rabbits are more everyday, and kon has more versatile use cases

David Reynolds

Two outstanding chapters in a row-- thanks!

IT'S HEEEEERE

jessb321

omg stu is so happy with Alden 😭😭😭

Zizard

Awww happy Stu

CloudyBall

It was agony going through that dinner scene solely because I wanted to know Stu's reaction first and foremost. Might have to re-read it to be honest xd

Guus van der Borg

I wonder why Alden was surprised to hear Reinhard rooted for him. Sure, Reinhard is competitive and was annoyed by the Reinhard-Flipper. But I would've thought he had mostly got that out of his system when he beat Alden later that day. (Not all of it, sure, but enough to not hold a grudge.) And they were genuinely good teammates during the obstacle course (bar some minor grumbles). And, also during the obstacle course, Reinhard was equally disturbed by how bloody BAD of a team Winston's was. All in all, I'd have assumed Reinhard was more (for lack of a better word) affiliated with Alden than with Winston.

Richard Seymour

Not soon friend. Friend ❤️. Alden missed it?

Lystic

Roman Velra also threw all his points into appeal.

Keven Leigh

Love this book. 10/10 would reread for the 10th time

Guus van der Borg

I vaguely remember there was some in-story musing about how making him a Rabbit or Adjuster didn't really make a difference if he was 'spoken for' anyway. And making him an Adjuster would make it less unusual if he wasn't available for summon than a Rabbit. I think I can stand behind that reasoning. After all, Artonans don't even know the Earth classification system. Odds are it was Earth (the contract) itself that decided to call it as an Adjuster rather than a Rabbit.

Sesharan

One of the great strengths of this story is the relatable complexity that even the most awful characters have. “Poor Marsha” is not a sentiment that many readers (if any) would have had before this chapter, but now there’s an unavoidable element of understanding for her that we all have to reckon with. It doesn’t change the person she is, but it gives us new insight on how she might have become that person.

Unavowed

This chapter put a big grin on my face for as long as it took me to read it. After a content minute or two of reflection on this chapter, I remembered that Alden's happiness is purchased on credit and it's just a matter of time before he ends up paying for it with interest. I hope he continues to hold on to these genuinely good moments through his upcoming struggles.

Rodmin

I loved it! "It actually sounds complicated to have a wizard friend,” said Lute. “I never imagined it before I met you, but now that I have, I keep thinking of things…” Oh, will Lute also maybe start weaving a friendship with an artonan maybe? That would be nice!

FrostBite

I have an idea of where this is going and I’m very excited, tftc Sleyca!

Thomas Todd

I wonder if Emban will think of the conversation she just had with Alden when she texts speaks to Ryada and when Ryada mentions Alden's letter and makes some comment about how it touches her, she'll reconsider, and wonder if maybe Alden knows more than she thinks about what they're going through. Not in a maybe he has an authority sense way but more in a shared experience of trauma way

Thomas Todd

I'm hoping for a mini-pov with Emban thinking about what Alden said and maybe even considering how he also related to Ryada in that letter

pierre boucheron

"do you mean the tactic of listening to you and believing what you say about yourself?” “Yes. That one. More people should attempt it.” Communicating by listening to one another and giving trust? Heresy!!

Thomas Todd

I do like that they were joking about Alden and it seemed in good fun, it means they accept him. It also makes me even more glad that Alden beat Winston

ThoMiCroN

Shouldn’t it be a four hours difference between Point Nemo and Chicago?

T N

I got the impression that Luke went "yikes, being friends with a wizard is such a hassle", so he is more worried about Alden rather than wanting one friend for himself too...

Cole

> waiting to see how the matchup went. And, it turned out, rooting for him to do well.  > Even one person who he would have thought might want to see him lose Great chapter, but something about this reads really odd, maybe "waiting to see how the matchup went. And as it turned out, rooting for him to do well.  Even the one person who he might have thought would wanted to see him lose"

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

This felt so good to read. In the duel, Alden absolutely refuted Winston's ideas about his place as a B-rank rabbit. But much more important than that, with this dinner full of friends and support from both Anesidora and back in Chicago, Alden has also thoroughly refuted the idea that he doesn't belong in this world. Also, Alden is such a good roommate to all four of his roommates. I appreciated "Writher got a lot more attempts than any of the other deadly tools because Writher and Alden lived together"

Daniel Keogh

Probably Halo effect. Alden thinks Rein is a bit of a tool so he just assumes he's against him.

Gaffer

Alden looked at Boe making them all laugh. //Maybe one day he’ll change his mind and come here. He looked at Jeremy. //We haven’t really drifted that far apart. It didn’t feel bad to belong for a while on Anesidora. — My happiest take on this is that these are really wise thoughts, enjoying that things are good right now, knowing that now is fleeting. Being hopeful for the future - but knowing that things will change. Hopefully but not necessarily for the better. That’s a very mature set of thoughts that 16 year olds aren’t often thinking. My darker take is man that all sounds awfully foreboding

Terrestrial_Biped

|||“There was no lasting damage.” |||“I wonder if Winston would agree with that.” I'm getting a good chuckle imagining the latter line in the voice of each participant of the diner scene.

Kahandran

Of COURSE Stuart instantly found out about the argument. And of course he had a better time hanging out with Alden than he would have otherwise. Big ups yourself more, Alden! I'd sell my dog to hang out with you for an afternoon. And I imagine you would then spend that afternoon berating me for selling my dog. So really this is a lose-lose situation

Hoogleman

"And, it turned out, rooting for him to do well," doesn’t exactly read strangely if you pause on the commas as intended. On the second part, that correction doesn’t work because he doubtlessly expects more than one person would want to see him lose. If it's changed to *the* one person, it changes the meaning to where Alden only expects Reinhard wants to see his downfall, whereas the original has him expecting Reinhard to be among the list of multiple people who want that outcome.

Pete

"and there was one comment from a Brute who sometimes hung out with Winston about how things would have been different if Winston had a weapon, too. " I wonder how high you need to go in the power rankings in this setting for an agility brute with a gun to not utterly destroy most of the competition. Like we know at the top end there are moon destroyers, but at the level we see most people would just die from getting shot. Until Alden can catch bullets his only chance would be bunkering down and hope the enemy does something stupid. Wonder whether Haoyu is bullet proof already and if yes if that extends to armor piercing ones.

Craeth

A wonderful chapter. The way you convey the chaos of a group of laughing friends is incredible. Thank you!

fonn

patreon and finding the most inconvenient UI >:( since when did they move the like button to the top of a post? now i have to scroll all the way back up again... really tasty denouement scene :D reminds me that apple and pumpkin pie will be in season soon (irl) friends meet friends! i love when worlds collide like that

Jacob Harris

It's a nice change to see Stuart telling Alden to chill out, for once. It goes the other way pretty frequently, with Stuart overreacting/overcompensating for how important he expects certain human customs or emotional reactions to be, but we don't often get to see Stu being the happy and relaxed one.

Gaffer

Offhand thought, kinda meaningless - there’s a funny parallel between Alden hanging out with Emban’s squad on the here to there and the phone call here. It’s all friendly, but there could easily be hidden Avowed/muggle classism (or envy, or lack of understanding) beneath the surface - they’re from different worlds. And just like Alden is actually a hidden knight, Boe is a hidden Avowed, who can’t reveal their secret similarity to the “upper class” of heroes/knights

Bruno Salque

That was a great chapter again :) Love the chemistry with Stuart and the global "feel good slice of life" we just have got. I wonder what will be the consequences of Alden's outburst with Emban, and ... When will he tell Stuart completely

Tifer

Cute scenes.

Matt V

I don't know why, but I suddenly had the thought: what if Stu already knows Alden has authority sense? He may have figured it out on his own. Or he could have gotten a hint from Mother about it. Given she showed Alden a scene from Stu's childhood, she's not afraid to violate privacy when it suits her purposes. I just had the thought that it would be hilarious if Alden finally works up the nerve to tell Stu, and Stu's response is something like: "Finally! I've been waiting forever to talk about this with you!"

Lystic

Stuart's so happy about his chat with his father It's probably some intensity 99 stuff that's going to complicate Alden's life.

Lady Kyhira Tenti

This chapter gave me the warm and fuzzies. I was smiling for most the chapter. I was worried for Boe on the phone for half a second tho. Btw the wiki is pretty cool. Made me question: is Winston and Alden the only ones with middle names? A minor nemesis must match

Eva

Well this was such a good day, I'm surprised it didn't come with a complimentary hot chocolate

Hanunga

It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that boe basically erased his parent's ability to feel much of anything, and that's why he feels he can't leave. Why he half hoped he got caught so that the decision was taken out of his hands.

PeasOfCrab

Wonderful chapter to sink one’s teeth into, like a juicy diner burger. Thank you!

A Free Skeleton

> [Marsha's dad] was caught pretending to be his own nemesis, committing crimes so that it looked like there was a dangerous unregistered for him to fight. Fucking LOL. But also, this plan seems really short-sighted? He made up a nemesis he could never catch! Even if he got away with it he'd look incompetent.

Zizard

I wonder if it’s possible that Alden’s visit to superlatives ends up being more productive and better received than expected and leads to a gradual desegregation of rank clubs and more gym time for all

Rodmin

Unrelated to this chapter but because of the wiki I came back to Alden's name being 'Samuel Alden Thorn'. Is it common in the us that people usually go by their middle name instead of their first name?

Zizard

I wonder if Mother really talks to Stu yet given he hasn’t affixed yet but yeah it’s possible he and others may have noticed Alden’s greater control over his unbound authority. I doubt they will have noticed the extent of his ability yet tho so the pseudo-knighthood may still come as a shock. I don’t think a limited authority sense is enough to qualify for knighthood so they probably wouldn’t suspect unless he fully demonstrates his control. As for mother I think she respects Alden’s wishes enough to give him some privacy for the time being. If Alden really drags his feet abt it I could see her showing Stu but only if there’s a possibility of it harming him during his affixation or something like that

abowden

This was great. It was nice to see everyone happy and hanging out with Alden. It was a fun read, Alden definitely needed all this. I'm not sure about the lasting damage either lol... Winston is never going to live this down. I hope Alden makes sure he specifically beats him every time they face off, he can definitely achieve that with a bit more training and an extra wordchain or three.

PatienceHoney

Reinhard is totally crushing on Hadiza! I think the Unnamed Object Shaper that waited on them was in Uni. So there is UOSH (You-osh) and UOSU (You-ohsoo). 😃 Stop looking at the horizon... those aren't clouds... it's ummm... those aren't clouds!

Lystic

It's a thing that sometimes happens predominantly in the south. A few generations of men or women will have the same first name as their sons or daughters, and they'll go by their middle names. So it's likely that Alden's father was Samuel (middle name) Thorn.

Sunden

Last time Alden felt this happy, the waves came. Not saying anything is going to happen but damn, Sleyca has scarred me. I can't just be happy with Alden's happiness... I'm too stressed out about it...

Sean Shivers

Writher got a lot more attempts than any of the other deadly tools because Writher and Alden lived together, and he was being a good roommate. It may look like a typo, but its not. Alden lives with Writher. Which is what he calls Lute when lute is paying off some of the more esoteric wordchains.

Wyatt

Thats a good point high velocity armor piercing rounds are a definately a thing. How high a level does an S ranked brute have to be to shrug off a .50 cal round from a barret? Or a sabot round from something larger?

Sean Shivers

Marsha is just a golden retriever and battle is a game... honestly kinda cute to see, but also i worry about the kind of hero she's building herself to be. Shriek seems like the only S who actually has his head on straight. Even Vandy who i love still seems like a kid.

Lystic

And the last time they went to eat out after gym. What could possibly go wrong this time, though? :)

Matt O'Connor

What a delightful chapter to end my day on. I think I smiled throughout.

WannaBeATree

Very nice chapter. All slices of life were interesting, informative and felt important and approachable. I am not sure how it will feel while binge reading, but as the occasional chapter, it was awesome.

Sean Shivers

Of all the characters who i think might join Kon on his eventual ship trip to chaosland... Kon - because obviously Alden - because he's actually useful and lexi isnt allowed to go and begs alden to keep his brother safe *drumroll* And Natalie. Cook of the moment strikes me as lowkey the best remedy to chaos that exists in the story so far. We know mind healers and body healers exist... but chaos only has incidental mental affects. Its primary affect is to erode authority and ultimately corrupt individuals. That erosion feels like forgetting themselves. Natalie though, literally invests her experiences into her cooking. I think Boe has a similar affect, directly overriding what they're feeling with what he tells them to.

Lyssur

Loved seeing Alden cool down with his Anesidora crowd. So at the dinner was: Alden, Haoyu, Lexi, Kon, Everly, Max, Finlay, Jeffy, Astrid, and Lucille. So Alden's room (minus Lute), Max's room (minus Winston), Lexi's brother and his girlfriend, Jeffy's crush, and Lucille. Alden, I doubt you're meaning to do this, but this could turn into another Natalie situation if you are not careful.... Reinhard's take on the rabbit crowd was also fun to see, since Alden doesn't see them like that. It was sad to see that Alden was surprised that people were interested and happy to see him beat Winston. I mean, I doubt anyone was upset he beat anyone, like he did Olive, even if they don't particularly care about the match up. But has Alden failed to see that Winston is disliked by most of the class? It was nice to see Ignacio invite him to the Superlatives- looking forward to that! So now we know- Writher beats Winsterminator. Makes sense. Writher also beat the car that almost killed Kon that one time.

Richard

I wonder if Haoyu is going to change his code name in honor of his own theme. The ImMoovable Object has a nice ring to it 🐮

Msharlo1

The best part is that this isn't her dad's first mention, he was called out in an earlier chapter too. (I want to say flashes)

David Burchfield

I think part of how Emban copes is by dwelling on how much she has sacrificed relative to others. I remember a scene with her and Evul where she was making cards or something asking non knights to meditate on it, and Evul was just like downer but whatever floats your boat. It doesn't excuse it but it does contextualize why she reacted the way she did to Alden.

Guus van der Borg

And as usual, Max is the victim of the splash zone. With how much Sleyca enjoys torturing him, I'm 90% he's a protagonist in a different story. :)

Guus van der Borg

Lute is REALLY hung up about that Opposite Stone huh? I bet he used to have one himself, lost it, and it reeeaally disappointed his opposite and Lute feels guilty and sad about it. I wouldn't mind another Lute POV soonish. Lute's a pretty good character too.

Kate Yen

I think Finlay, Maricel, and Tuyet seem fairly well adjusted

Lystic

Hazel Velra. The Palace has some sort of relationship with the knights, and since she's in permanent stay mode she might be the obvious choice if they need to provide some sort of services for the knights on their trip. Stuart (and/or Alden if he's revealed by then) might get to make his own avowed team for long term missions like Alis did, and on Alden's request could fill it with CNH students (or at least Lexi so he doesn't go mad). Also Esh/Lind/Drusi will be there, and probably Porti'loth.

Kemlion

I’m surprised Boe answered 🤔 Tftc!

Catherine

"Stuart’s call came just after midnight. Alden had been waiting for it." Hmm... sounds like us waiting for soup!

Jazehiah

Even the "embarrassing" stories about Alden make him sound heroic.

Tarry Higgins

Compare and Contrast In the last chapter where Winston says "it isn’t your world." In this chapter. It didn’t feel bad to belong for a while on Anesidora.

Jazehiah

Depending on how you count, Alden has people who care about him on more than two worlds. First, how dare he forget Kibby? Second, Anesidora feels like its own planet sometimes.

Jazehiah

His shirts are the real victims. Good thing Kon was there.

Jazehiah

I'm sure most of them have middle names. We only know a few of them.

Guus van der Borg

On Haoyu wanting to be needed, maybe he should volunteer as a fireman? I mean, Ground and Water Shapers will probably do the brunt of the extinguishing, but I bet Dura Brutes are amazing at rescue. Then again, his durability doesn't extend to others, and Anesidora has Emergency Teleports. So maybe not THAT useful, but I bet there's still a significant amount of people that go unconcious before they can ET. Especially since I assume there are plenty of fires happening on Anesidora... And not to mention all the weird shit that probably happens in Boomtown. Probably good to have someone on the team that can take pretty much anything to the face to scout out whatever weird stuff is melting the house down this time. Yeah, I can see Fireman Haoyu being an asset.

Lyssur

He did mention he left it in his clothes when he first had it, and it went through the laundry before he found it again. I wonder if the Opposite stone has a different function for him since he's a Chainer- he made a point of telling Alden the Opposite stone will only flash as a marker for him, that the one with its partner won't be a true Opposite. (Ch 107) Maybe the person he's connected with knows what chain is cast, and casts its opposite, as a way to keep the universe balanced at all times? Or even he casts both sides of the chain, with him feeling one half and his Opposite feeling the other. I can see either being very useful with delicate wordchains that the Palace is trying to improve the strength of.

Barrett Fogarty

In my mind Sleyca has Finlay talking like Princess Merida from the Brave animation. Everything is shite. He'll just go maaad. It's not just vocabulary but sentence structure too. Once you see it, it won't go away.

Guus van der Borg

Also, do Anesidoran Firemen get teleported to the emergency? Seems like a good use of teleportation slots. Seeing as the draftees were getting teleported to their emergencies during the flood, I'd assume so.

J Reynolds

It's a two hour difference. Point Nemo is in the California time zone, just in the southern hemisphere.

abowden

Honestly, she's ok. She's not even rankist in the typical snooty way most people are. She's just hyper obsessed with STRONK OPPONENTS and high octane fights. Most A's can't give her that, so she doesn't want to spend time in the dueling ring with them.

BelligerentGnu

This chapter was as happy as eating dessert in the bath.

JennP

That was a good follow-up chapter. I've been a bit worried about the argument with Emban. Even though I think she deserved it, Alden getting involved with the family bullshit might have caused a problem between him and Stu. I guess I should trust Stu more

Poiuy

Loved this. I was just giggling in the bed at the cat on the roof story. My husband looked at the date and ignored me.

PhoenixPax

There are a ton of fan theories about Boe, I'm sure we can rehash them if you are interested!

PhoenixPax

Sounds like potentially the opposite to me. Stu seemed too calm and grounded for the number one theory (The primary giving him permission to affix on the normal schedule).

zdm

Now _that's_ some soup.

Clint

Such an amazing chapter. So many unexpectedly positive notes from Alden’s Chicago friends meeting his Anesidoran friends to Stu’s day being better because of Alden’s argument with Emban, rather than worse. Such a happy chapter makes me afraid something awful is about to happen. The last time Alden had such a pleasant night out with his classmates, the ocean rose up and tried to drag them under. 😬

Alexander Dupree

I like all of Alden’s friends and his success in the Losestin competition

Pete Magnuson

"Writher got a lot more attempts than any of the other deadly tools because Writher and Alden lived together, and he was being a good roommate." I love how this specified Writher rather than Lexi as a roommate. Either the the whip is an honorary roommate alongside sunny, or perhaps that Lexi is just Writher's human companion

chumponimys

"It didn’t feel bad to belong for a while on Anesidora." That "for a while" is so foreboding. Alden knows he can't be here forever. He knows the truth of his knighthood coming out is inevitable and will rip away his sense of belonging in a quiet dinner after gym like this. But for him to be framing his thoughts around it, how soon is he imagining? Does a night like this push him closer to telling Stu or further?

PeasOfCrab

Speculation on what (Astrid thought) Max's theme could be? - Shifting technicolor - Traffic light - Court judge - Orchestra conductor - Black holes - Anglerfish

PeasOfCrab

I think "he was being a good roommate" was in reference to Alden being a good roommate, not Lexi/Writher. Given that Alden has previously framed himself in that way/has stated that being a good to great roommate is a desire of his.

Calibri

This chapter made me smile so hard it hurt. I love it when Alden is happy and getting along with his friends.

Insomniac

"Guess Alden’s not coming back to the hero program. The Rabbit bosses finally sent in the elite team to lure him home" I love that they talk about them in such a positive way. I low-key thought some of them were going to be asshats about them being Rabbits. It makes sense though, they are an elite Rabbit unite.

Vinohr

With such a good day I wonder if affixation is coming soon

Cuticle

I'm pretty sure Alden is already resolved to tell Stu (and pretty soon), he's just stalling because he's scared. But I would be very surprised if he didn't tell Stu within a few months (in story)

Memoryofgold

A balm for my Monday blues

Elle

That was fantastic.

Bbyh

I dont think an affixation will happen, but I suspect a level up notification might come tonight

Jamo

Declared should be capitalized, no? It’s a title or identity? Even if it’s a discretionary rule, it might be nice to remind us that it’s a thing in the world, like a category of people the same way Avowed is capitalized. Just my 2 cents. NBD. Anyway, great chapter.

Steven To

There's so many characters in this chapter and yet I still miss Kibby, and Gorgon. Interactions with those two were fun. Yea, we get snippets of Kibby videos every now and then but it's not the same... Amazing writing still

Jazehiah

Alden should have known better than to think that Emban and the s(h)amefaced twins wouldn't talk about what happened. Stu was happy that Alden went to bat for him, but saddened that Alden thought Stu would prefer to be with his family and acquaintancea than his (best/only) friend. I never thought I'd say it, but the two of them are quite cute.

Jazehiah

It took me a moment to realize Roman was the other rabbit who "over-apexed" their appeal. Elite Rabbits was a fun description of Alden's bunny buddies. Also, "over-apexed" is a fun piece of slang.

Ian T Hathaway

"Tell them the opposite. I call *you* my friend." I'm never going to emotionally recover from this, btw

Jazehiah

His accent gets more pronounced when his emotions are running high, too.

Jazehiah

I was also surprised. In hindsight, it makes sense. Boe wants to know more about the people Alden's at school with. He wants to make sure he's not being replaced. It might also be suspicious if he didn't want to meet the other superhumans.

The butler did it

With how much intensity Sleyca can imbue in her writing, these chapters are necessary as mental health padding. Too many stories overlook the importance of a little downtime for their characters and the readers.

WannaBeATree

Alden had a party!!! You know what that means? :) Demons falling down on CNH next chapter!

Cassie Brooks

YAY!! Another good times chapter!!! Love these. Never not loving these chapters.

Charles Hernandez

The 10 at the restaurant are: Alden, Haoyu, Lexi, Kon, Everly, Luceille, Max, Finlay, Jeffy, Astrid BUT there might be a secret 11th since we can't be sure the object shaper classmate isn't the same person as their object shaper waiter.

Neorem

Few weeks ago I think. I use opera and its Reader mode button so it always scrolls back up.

Neorem

All the flags are raised. I wonder how many of them are a red herring.

MWF

I have a potentially unreasonable hope that Kibbys mentor will sub in for the gym maintenance tech and bring Kibby along to Earth to watch the gym maintenance and to see Alden before she starts kinderwizard school. They both deserve it and it would be a neat learning experience for them both.

Aspiring Moth

shame maricel is avoiding everyone. she belongs in the group too. tuyet would fit in, and if it wasn't exam week then vandy should have come too

C. Adkins

Your comment just made me realize, if Alden tells Stu about being a knight, then will Boe, through the deal he had with Alden, feel compelled to tell Jeremy about being an avowed? And when Alden goes public, will Boe?

Gaffer

> She reached for the basket that had held the buffalo wings and saw that it now held nothing but gnawed bones. “Kon!” Wait, how are none of the kids asking if Kon could use his skill on a pile of chicken bones and burst wing meat and hot sauce through everyone’s chests as it reKonstitutes?

Benjamin Bendele

So can alden go from b rank to A rank? I know s rank can go to number rank but I dont know if b can go to A

Benjamin Helkey

Yes! Earlier in the story there was a B rank student who said she was targeting that.

Gaffer

> “Lute, I got you pie. Chocolate. Should I put it in the fridge, or do you want—?” An arm stuck itself between the bathroom wall and the curtain that hid the tub. Fingers snapped expectantly. … > “If I hear you fall out of your bed, I’ll come check on you,” Lute said. “But then I’ll laugh.” Hmmm, providing a feast. Prostration. Alden becoming Palace of Unbreaking cultist: confirmed

Benjamin Helkey

Predictions: 1) Winston is going to switch schools. 2) After Alden's knight status becomes public, his school is going to receive much more support. 3) when that happens, the S ranks that left and Winston are going to try to come back.

KB

Oh to be in a bathtub eating pie. Lute Velra is my role model. TYFTC

PatienceHoney

@Kahandran I think if we work together we can make this a win-win. You sell your dog to me. And then I will do the same to get an afternoon with Alden, and sell him back to you! Yea! We get to meet Alden and I get a dog for a weekend or whatever...

PatienceHoney

I can see Sleyca thinking if you and having a laugh when writing that line... 😉

MWF

I never thought about it that way before but Alden is low-key a meister in fights. His weapon varies but he is usually fighting with something in hand. One part adjuster, one part healer, one part meister, even ever so slightly one part shaper because of the water thing or eventually part sway when he gains the ability to mess with people's minds (with their permission) . All on top of regular rabbitiness. It's one thing to be told he's versatile but you think back to how he's used it and how he'll be able to use it and he's rather remarkable indeed.

MWF

Lol, I guess the one thing BoaB is really not is brutely. He has azure rabbit to help with that I guess.

Msharlo1

So, Finlay took Alden out to celebrate with Max and Jeffy. This means that they did not in fact take the strategic positioning in forcing Winston to move out. I.e. Watching him pack and forcing the issue. While this was a nice, normal-ish thing to do, it's also like letting your crazy ex into your house unsupervised. Not a good idea. I could totally see Winston using this opportunity to get revenge or invade their space.

Fabian

> “Thanks for caring about your opposite. Remember I don’t mind entertaining them for you if you’re going to go for a long time without doing any chains.” He is one of maybe 20 people out of a whole planet able to do chains. No wonder he's excited! I still bet the stones are some kind of experiment.

Francis

Aww, Alden very, rarely has a good day like this one. One where he feels proud of himself and that he belongs. I hope his confidence grows and that he stops trying to hide in the shadows.

Francis

Hmm, now that you mention it, why do we hear often about the stones? Could be an irrelevant piece of world building, OR something important that reveals some lore later

Francis

Lol, was just thinking what Stu would say about Alden's comments to Winston during the duel.

Itsowkur

I wonder if the system is gonna use this opportunity to tell him he leveled up

BeautifulBusinessBoi

With Igancio inviting Alden to practice their skills together, the seed has finally been planted for them to talk about the weight they both feel being avowed, called to fight in a war against chaos

Eva

Hopefully we'll find out since they are watching the duel together

Michael Edwards

Shrike might secretly be the classmate Stu would most get on with. (Ironically Lexi probably would as well as much as that would terrify him)

Lyssur

Does no one else find the idea of eating in the tub unsanitary? Kind of gross? Just me? Getting treats delivered, though, always nice, ickiness aside.

SkyGold

Hi guys, I'm just looking for the chapter where Alden writes the letter to Ryada but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know which chapter it was?

Jazehiah

I wonder if Alden and the topic of friendships came up with Jeneth-art'h. Probably not, since Stu only talked to him briefly, but I do wonder what was said. Maybe advice on cultivating a support network? Some poetic analogy like the patient creatures? Some food for thought on the motivation? A general vote of confidence? It's not important right for us to know right now, even if it meant a lot to Stu.

Jazehiah

I've also not seen anyone talk about how the restaurant Alden picked is the same one he told Boe and Jeremy about with the "best hashbrowns ever." It's a nice bit of continuity. Globies choose restaurants that remind them of home: Maricel chose Fillipino place. Alden picked the American diner that reminds him of breakfasts with his friends in Chicago. Where might Winston or Jeffy choose?

Stuart Brown

Jeffy would choose that plastic chair barbeque place we saw when Morrison Walker took Principal Saleh on a date.

Lyssur

Looking at the comments, many people expect this nice day to maybe be followed by Earth trying to convince him to affix, and I realize how cruel that is. Soon being happy will become a stimulus for upcoming anxiety and fear. Alden should be able to have a happy feel good day without thinking Earth will bring up affixing. Earth told Alden that it would keep trying to convince him to affix if he felt he might, such as it did when he was appreciative of his skill and happy on Anesidora. When Alden was asked how he wanted these check-in meetings to go, he said merely to be as kind as possible. I am thinking he should have preferred scheduled meetings, so he can enjoy relaxing like this knowing affixation won't be shoved in his face again. Opinions? Should Alden have chosen scheduled unpleasant affixation meetings with Earth that he can brace for, or should he never know when it may next occur?

Aspiring Moth

he's on artona 1 enough that he should just request that earth leave the job to mother. earth is already equipped for the possibility of avowed spending time on other planets and being given level up notifications by other contracts, so it shouldn't be an issue. of course mother wouldn't actually do it since she doesn't share the same philosophy towards affixation, and she knows that Alden knows approximately when the tipping point will occur

Kooikerhondjelover

Typo: „They chattered about duels, ..“ => chatted

Jim

Chatter works though it’s got a slight negative connotation. Idle talk about trivial things

J Reynolds

It appears to be capitalized if it's referring to a particular person, like Declared Stu'art-h or Declared Petch-banzo. If it's referring in general to people who are in the class, it's lower case: 'automatic admission to DawnStep was given to all declared'.

William Forrest

I feel as if plot threads are rapidly wrapping up. All I can really think of left is Alden's conversation with Esh-erdi. Therapy is progressing. Chaining is progressing. Alden's antagonist in class is vanquished militarily in the duel and politically in that kicking Winston's ass got him celebrated by his peers. His relationship with Stuart is positive and stable. Stu's relationship with his family, while not necessarily positive, remains at least stable. Do you think we are approaching a time skip? My theory: We hit a time skip reaction chapter/chapters. We get Esh-erdi conversation (maybe from his perspective in whole or in part), teacher reaction to Alden changes, Christmas visit from aunt's perspective to see his changes from her perspective. Then we jump closer to the end of Alden's choosing season and Stu's affixation. *Edited because I still hit enter to start a new paragraph and accidently post my comment early every time I use patreon.

Reborn

Maybe the current ones are, but there was a LOT of them from earlier in the story that still haven’t been resolved, multiple involving the Velra’s, Boe’s just seems to be waiting in the wings to be a major arc, Hannah was never found and even though she is assumed dead, until there’s a body I don’t think that will be resolved. The stuff with Joe, rabbit knight stuff, Kibby! There’s plenty more I haven’t even mentioned yet.

J Reynolds

100% unrelated to the story so far: I wonder if Anesidora has physical money. Banknotes and coins. If I had to guess: probably. I'm sure there has been some money nerd who can persuade the government to make limited runs for foreign collectors to buy. NesiCards for all normal transactions, though. We've already seen that they might have stamps. Possibly, anyway. Leo the Post Box was ready to send stuff for Alden, after all. However, he accepted payment only after Alden dropped the note in the box. I suspect that Anesidora has stamps the same way they have coins: curiosities for foreign and domestic philatelists and numismatists.

John D Jones

Granted magic space aliens, but 2040 is only 15 years from now. Not every place on Earth is on the same technological/social level as every other place. That will remain true for our world by 2040 and is probably true in the setting of this story. Figure even on Souper Earth there will still be places/countries that accept/require cash. Figure there will be even more that still use physical stamps/postage. If an Anesidoran (especially a Globie) wants to mail a letter or package to one of those places, they'll need a stamp, so the Anesidoran post office will sell those stamps.

John D Jones

Here's a list of the current S-ranks in Alden's class which I'm stealing from Chapter 125, "It's Pepper Flavored:" S - Maricel - Shaper of Ground S - Lucille - Strength Brute (doesn't want to kill people) S - Jeffy - Aqua Brute S - Finlay - Speed Brute S - Jupiter - Shaper of Life (plants for now) S - Tuyet - Meister of Darts S- Konstantin - Adjuster S- Vandy - Shaper of Sky S - Marsha - Meister of a Shapeshifting Polearm S - Febri - Agility Brute S - Ignacio (Shrike) - Meister of Knives Of that grouping the only ones I wouldn't say were actual friends with Alden are Vandy, Marsha, Febri and Ignacio. Even then, I think Vandy, Febri and Ignacio are at least friendly acquaintances with Alden and even Marsha is more indifferent to him than actually hostile. Of course aside from Konstantine, it's unlikely that any of the S-ranks would consider Alden to be a real threat in combat. I'm not going to go through the A-ranks the same way, but I will note that aside from Winston the only people who seem to "dislike" Alden were nameless people mentioned in this chapter: "He caught some glares and wary glances, and there was one comment from a Brute who sometimes hung out with Winston about how things would have been different if Winston had a weapon, too." Figure it's likely that instead of truly disliking Alden, the glares and wary glances came from people who don't want to be made to look weak or incompetent because they were A-ranks who might lose duels to the class's B-rank Rabbit. It's both irrational and understandable. Irrational because the class isn't even integrated into the rest of the Hero Program yet much less being truly judged on their progress. Understandable because in a Rankist culture of S>A>B>etc., no one wants to be an A who gets "Rabbited." Figure Winston is generally considered to be a fairly strong competitor. Seeing him get stomped like a roach by Alden probably made a few people nervous.

J Reynolds

I'd strongly second Marsha's indifference, rather than hostility. She doesn't take most A-ranks seriously. Hardly ever uses their names, for heaven's sake! She does not think that they are worth fighting, or have anything that they can teach her. More fool her...

Jazehiah

Some discussion on Discord got me thinking: Since Artonans basically have a monopoly on magic and magical research (with the exception of Gorgon), almost all known magic leverages Artonan physiology. That means there could be entire branches of magic that have gone undiscovered simply because no Artonan had reason to consider it. For example, Alden cannot divide his thoughts. He cannot cast many of the same spells an Artonan can. No Artonan would think to cast with only one half of their brain. What magic could he discover as a result of working around that limitation? Will Alden be a "stunted" caster forever, or will he (and maybe Stu) devise a branch of single-thread magic? Just some idle thoughts for maybe 150 chapters from now.

PatienceHoney

150 chapters from now... are they going to do this within the next couple of months?

Bob Smith

Winston is going to be like "ya I said I would move out, I didn't say when"

Cassie Brooks

I like to think that Vandy has Winston energy a little bit. And what I mean by Winston Energy is that someone raised a hardworking kid to pursue a goal and gave them the absolute wrong tools to both accomplish and understand that goal. I don’t think Winston’s parents have any experience in succeeding and becoming heroes. So they definitely messed up wayyyyy more by trying to make their kid become a hero using influencer tactics. I *do* think Vandy’s grandparents have some grasp on what a good hero at least *does.* So she’s got maybe a bit more of a future doing what she wants, it’s just gonna take some adjustment to realize what she will be when she gets there. I say this bc unlike Winston, I find Vandy likeable??? Imagine??? Or at least unhealthy in a “at least I am always trying to do better” way, and I think that’s lovely. As opposed to Winston’s insanity of “if I do it right and mess up, it was because someone else was wrong.” Like, Winston didn’t fail the first assessment, the teachers were just playing “mind games.” Vandy failed during the team game before the floods and gave a report on all her failings to her elders. You see how they are both missing the point. If Winston wasn’t the class pariah worse than Lute, then I could see a world in which Vandy and him bond over not really knowing what to do when they fail. As is, Vandy would just be like “you are the laughing stock of the academy, there cannot be any real lesson that is useful that you could impart.”

Cassie Brooks

I’m also using this as a pool for other thoughts about the series at large, so watch out. I think it’s weird to feel so connected to Anesidora and so distant from the Artonas. Like, from Alden’s POV, he struggles with belonging and seeks to build home where he can, but, as a reader, I keep thinking Alden *has* to be on Earth. And that doesn’t have to be the case, right? Alden should get the chance to belong with the other knights, right? But every time we shift to that place, I get this feeling that Alden *is* so other. Even when he’s around Stuart. I think a key reason for this is Alden’s current life trajectory vs. Stuart’s. Stuart is going to become a chaos-fighting knight. Alden is going to be hiding in hero school and studying magic. I just can’t see past the lack of ability for them to make it all work??? Like. Best case scenario in which Alden and Stuart both stay friends and belong is one of two things: 1) They belong places that are necessarily different and opposed in some systematic way that constantly frays their relationship. Or 2) they go full buck wild and make a squad with Boe that lives across multiple worlds so that there is a ragtag squad of young people who are completely exempt from the Contract and fight chaos on their own terms without needing ANYONE else. The first one is the path that they are on to me. Alden finds peace on Anesidora or elsewhere and stays hiding forever somehow. Stuart becomes a knight and still can’t find people who want to understand him. The second one is a pipe dream with the guarantee that they will have no support from anyone or community to be with. Alden can’t realistically be in Anesidora casually and also be a knight. He can barely be there casually anyways. Stuart can’t be in his own house and make a unique decision. He can barely make decisions that he wants anyways. For that second one to be a reality, both of them have to REALLY push at the stuff they can’t control. Alden has to be noticeable in a way that isn’t a threat to him. Stuart has to garner respect of his decisions that are risky from his family. You see how this could be a struggle and/or impossible.

Let's talk a bit about rituals. We go through our lives experiencing all sorts of rituals ranging from the magnificent to the mundane. Larger organized ceremonies such as graduation or marriage as well as small, personal rituals such as athletes getting in the mindset to perform, morning routines, or meditation. Rituals are laden with symbolism, meaning, and connection to the world/people beyond ourselves. But I think the common thread in rituals that I want to talk about is their tendency to direct a person to a clearer mental space. When you graduate, your community and authority figures are telling you that you're ready for the next phase of life. When you marry, you're preparing to tackle life's challenges with a partner you're committed to instead of alone. There's a sense that it's an turning of the page; What is written is written, let us not concern ourselves with it but move on to a clean slate. Tomorrow is over, have your coffee and think about today. All your worries are noise, focus on the game. Your stresses are weighing you, clear your mind. You're not alone anymore. You've prepared for this for years, now it's time to do it. Ritual is the act of unburdening oneself. And Alden's all about having burdens. In this last chapter, we saw Alden partake in a small ritual: going to an American style diner with his friends. He even invited Boe and Jeremy virtually. A victory celebration is a way to tuck the stress and anxiety of performance away and relish in the hard fought rewards of your effort, and Alden definitely deserves it. Stuart participated in Welcome's End, even if not with the Rapport, and not to the degree he wanted to. Throughout the week he was able to stop looking back on the things he was missing out on and look forward to the things he gained. A new soon-friend who yells at his family for him. New connections among the non-rapport declared. A call from his father that brought comfort. We have rituals coming up. Bromelimas, celebrating the end of finals and helping acclimate a roommate that can't go home for Christmas. Alden's chaos-free birthday, celebrating Alden surviving moon Thegund. We've seen quite a few rituals in the past. A made up ceremony to unburden an anxious Kibby for Alden's hail Mary attempt on a dying moon. Stuart watching his sister feed the roots, unburdening her from her affixation once and for all.

MWF

That's a lot to think about. And here I was all amused by bathtub food steadily becoming more of a thing.

MWF

Ditto. I timed it right taking a break though (as hard as the waiting was >_<) these last six chapters formed a lovely mini-arc that was wonderful to read all at once. Super supportive is fun to read in chapters, an absolute delight to read in larger book-like chunks but either way there are never enough chapters!

Stuart Brown

“I had a chance to talk to Father alone. It was a comfort. And even if our conversation was a brief one, he gave me words that will last much longer in my thoughts. I’ll tell you some of what he said after I’ve kept it as my own for a time.” It's nice to think about this in light of expectations I had for the family call. I thought there would be drama, fury, arguments. I thought Alden would be dragged into the middle of it either directly or indirectly. What does it mean that it passed without incident? - Jeneth perhaps expected the rest of the family to fail to support Stu'art'h's choice, and was unsurprised. - He thought Stu was strong enough to continue anyway. - He probably told him so. It's a nice little chunk to chew on.

Msharlo1

Stuart said in a previous chapter that he had his father's blessing. A lot of this family drama seems to run counter to his and Alis's stated perspectives while they are not around to reinforce them.

Jeffrey

Alden totally should bring special magic stuff for Aunt Connie's wedding. More importantly, though, he ought to bring Gorgon some special Natalie food.

Aspiring Moth

I want to see Gorgon's reaction to Alden giving him an authority pat. their people didn't practice magic in the same way as artonans, but he would be able to feel it

Lystic

"Alden, why does this guac need to taste like freedom?" "No reason, just do it!" Iirc he already sent him a cinnamon roll from Natalie.

J Reynolds

Gorgon would be able to say something like 'how interesting,' but nothing else. What he is allowed to say seems to be very circumscribed. I wish that they could talk in the headspace they had in Ch. 51, but Gorgon asked him not to do that again.

I still have the issue that comments do not fully extend, i.e. I can only read 2 lines more than visible without „extend“. I am using the App on my IPhone and have already logged in/out, deleted the App and reinstalled it. Its less fun this way. Any advice?

Aspiring Moth

maybe an older version of the app would work for you. I've downgraded to undo their "improvements" before and don't regret it. I'm not sure what that would involve on iPhone though, as I'm on android worst case scenario you can use the mobile website while waiting for an update that might fix it. hopefully your problem is resolved soon

Matt DiMeo

It just occurred to me that the teachers know Winston fights stupid, and they either haven’t told him or it hasn’t stuck.

Schuh

I can't imagine them not telling him. He just doesn't care about winning as much as he does about getting a few good videos out of gym.

JJ Hunter

When Alden was thinking about splitting his time between worlds a few weeks ago, he was achingly aware of what he would lose in choosing. Now he's finding some peace within those choices: he's growing deeper connections where he is, and hasn't lost as much as he feared in living more deliberately.

JJ Hunter

Bless Ignacio for getting excited about Alden pulling something unusual and challenging out of his rabbit's hat of ever-changing contraptions and creative skill breakthroughs and wanting to measure himself against it; can't wait to see what the Superlatives club is like (and I suspect Alden may be noteworthy to quite a few of those volunteering guests...).

I’ve decided that Patreon moved the heart button to the top of the chapter because Sleyca chapters were getting too many hearts. Making it harder for readers to like posts is clearly the solution they came up with for solving this “problem.” Too bad for them that Sleyca writes excellent chapters like this and gets all the hearts anyways.

Dr.Pixle

Chapter predictions (wrong answers only): Stu buys the moon (earths moon) Alden performs as a knight in a play for stu (earth lore knight) Boe comes out as a furry with a cat-boy fursona Jeremy affixes as an F Haoyu slips on a cucumber peeled like a banana in the sauna Max and Kon lose a dare and post a photo of them kissing with tongue on trime Gorgon writes a book about the flavor profile of flies in distress and becomes a bestseller

Haen

Is there a posting schedule on here like there is on royal road? Ive been trying to work it out myself but so far rather unsuccessfully.

Aspiring Moth

Wednesdays and Sundays, with two skip days per month (announced in advance). normally the chapters are dropped towards the end of the day, and of course it'll vary based on your time zone. EU people get Monday and Thursday morning chapters generally for example

Richard Stinkman

I hope Alden asks Stu or Esh about Gorgon again. I think curiosity about the strange creature in the embassy in his hometown is normal enough that he's overthinking the fear of exposing himself or Gorgon

Guus van der Borg

“He offended the mad Rabbit of Matadero, and that was the end for him.” I need to remind myself more often about what Matadero translates to. Because this basically says The Mad Rabbit of the Slaughterhouse. Has a much better ring to it. :)

puppy0cam

alas, you are. fear not! for the next chapter shall commence within the next 12 hours... hopefully...

burlindw

I doubt that the school would get that much more support when Alden's status goes public. If the Artonans get involved in Alden's education, it would be to get Alden a private tutor (like Stu's mom suggested when she gave Alden the earring) or to bring him to Dawnstep for training. There aren't any humans capable of teaching him about magic or knighthood. It doesn't really make sense to invest in a school that can't help him with the thing that's notable about Alden.

burlindw

He intends to be heroic. His execution (and verb tense) could use some work.

C. Adkins

Hey Super, we are gonna need you to go ahead and sleep so we can get the new chapter sooner. It worked like a charm last time

Grant Upton

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh

abowden

I don't know why the soup agony has hit us all so hard this time. It was probably the best place to have break thats been available in the story for months. I guess there's a lot of plot threads tantalisingly close to being tied up?

Only one refresh before the new chapter ... Only one refresh before the new chapter ... Only one refresh before the new chapter (this one is the right one) ... Only one refresh before the new chapter ...

I'm leaving for the day so won't be able to read, which means the chapter should be released around now. you're welcome everyone, I'll take the fall this time @SSSS

Spoiler alert:

Winston finally attacks Alden on his way to the apartment and gets assasinated by the votary. Emban slipped on three banana peels because she was constantly thinking if she was harsh on the human. Alden gets a rank up notification on his system but he’s too cool to care.

Eva

Sleyca is really burning the midnight oil. I reckon she's working on rounding off some bits if story while setting up something big

puppy0cam

There's an equally likely possibility that sleyca just had a lot of personal stuff going on for the past week.

DL

Need my SOUP fix asap. Having a bad bout of withdrawal symptoms.

6b5zksc9

no chapter?

Arugula

I bet it's gonna drop 5 mines before I have to start working :,)

PatienceHoney

I am a little worried about Sleyca. Often she posts a "don't expect the chapter for X hours" if she knows she is going to be posting later than normal. But I am going to imagine happy things for her. I think she finished the chapter early on Sunday. It was a quiet, rainy day, perfect for writing, and the chapter flowed. She was about to post when her home lost power. But, instead of worrying, she decided to enjoy an evening of unplugged fun and fell asleep early and hasn't awoken yet to post now that power and internet are back. Wishing nights of happy and relaxing sleep for all.

puppy0cam

Or maybe she was possessed by a ghost! 👻 I would imagine it's difficult to write while a ghost is trying to enact revenge against its killer using your body as a meat puppet.

Itsowkur

Winston took revenge on Sleyca by stealing the chapter :(

Joey T.

I was just rereading this per Sleyca's suggestion on the memory wipe. This chapter will now end before the Lute bathtub scene. Lute has become Alden's closest friend on the island. I can imagine a scene where Alden confides in Loot about his wizardness before leaving for Artona I to affix. The Chainer chapters are some of my favorites, so maybe I'm biased in wishing for this to happen ASAP. "Thanks for caring about your opposite. Remember I don't mind entertaining them for you if you're going to go for a long time without doing any chains." "I remember."

AutumnLeaves

Rereading per Sleyca's fix and I realized if they go on the spaceship Natalie has to come so everyone has a "taste of home" to help them through the loneliness. Also, I was thinking Emilija's paint chip fixing talent would help with leaks on a spaceship, for example if a tiny meteorite/demon made it through the outer skin. I think there's more to her talent than paint. I wonder what the real name is. Still working on how Hadiza's sparkle talent could help for real, but inspections would always come out with 5 stars if she was around. You know... Never seen an engine room this sparkling!

jose sanchez

Alden continues his search for his place, pure adolescence with a great deal of drama, comedy and fantasy.

Eleeyah

> mad Rabbit of Matadero That should become his official hero moniker lmao

Burleigh Charlton

"They all took pens and" -> "They all took pens and" there are two spaces between all and took.
