a note on pronunciations (youve pointed out inconsistencies for a range of words - tyrell, arya, etc): the show is very inconsistent on it. some call arya "ar-ya" while others say "ar-ee-a". aegon is pronounced "A-gon" right now but later everyone will switch to saying "egg-on". its weird. good catch on thoros *of myr* being from one of the free cities. he is one of a small amount of people who do not originate in westeros but are personally embedded with the westerosi nobility. "are the mormonts stark bannermen?" all the north serves the starks, excluding the nights watch itself. "could benjen be mance rayder?" mance was established before benjen disappeared. he was referrenced by osha and her group before they were captured by robb. reminding you guys for no particular reason that "dragonglass" is a real substance, just that in real life we only call it obsidian like the maesters do rather than dragonglass. its been used for weaponry historically in real life before people were able to use more advanced materials. quarth is not one of the Free Cities. not all cities in essos are (yunkai, astapor and mereen are other very rich cities in essos that are not part of the 9 Free Cities) littlefinger did not come "from nothing" like varys, bronn, davos, the cleganes, etc. unlike commoners like them, littlefinger was always a (minor) lord. he has grown to a position much above what would be expected from his humble beginnings but still comes from a much greater origin point than the others listed above and certainly not "from nothing". season 3 is great!

I think I mentioned in the Season 1 History & Lore that it is truly amazing that with all of these storylines, histories, cultures, religions, etc. that it was all just simply MADE UP by one guy. The power of the human imagination is truly incredible sometimes. Granted he was inspired by many actual historical events and figures, but still.

I don’t know, it is Game of Thrones, “assault wives” doesn’t seem too far fetched.

The nine Free Cities are Braavos, Lorath, Lys, Myr, Norvos, Pentos, Qohor, Tyrosh, and Volantis.

some added info for them about how each has been references so far: braavos: syrio and jaqen, two men who have saved arya, are both from there lorath: cersei clocked shae's accent as being from there, and said she had had a lorathy handmaiden herself previously lys: varys mentions the poison known as "tears of lys" to ned, that he claims was used to kill jon arryn myr: thoros is from there norvos, qohor and tyrosh: mentioned only briefly in passing if at all, do not recall specifics pentos: where dany and viserys were smuggled to and kept safe before the story began volantis: where robb's wife tallisa is from

Yes, the Mormonts are Stark bannermen. Bear Island is about 400-500 miles or so Northwest of Winterfell. In the first season Viscerys asks Jorah "what did Ned Stark want you for?" referring to the crime that Jorah committed that led him to flee across the Narrow Sea. (He sold poachers to slavers from Essos, if you recall). Apparently Jorah really didn't like the idea of joining the Night's Watch as his father had done.

But Volantis and myr very much practice slavery. Also most cities already existed during the reign of the valyrian freehold, and after the doom started vying for dominance

Remember what Ygritte said about the Free Folk/Wildlings: nobody gets the benefit of the doubt because of who or what their father was. If Jon Snow gets accepted by them, it'll be because of Jon Snow, not Ned Stark or anyone else. Besides, that story she told about Night's King and the Nightfort, (one of the abandoned Night's Watch castles along the wall), is a legend/myth from centuries ago. She said that immediately after the Starks and Free Folk fought together to kill Night's King...the Wildlings were sent back beyond the Wall and the Starks have been fighting against them ever since. WIldlings aren't going to give you the credit for something your father or mother or brother did, let alone something you father's ancestors did one time about seven or eight hundred years ago.

Not all the free cities have slavery. Braavos, in particular was founded by former Valyrian slaves who fled before the doom came. Qarth isn't one of the free cities. The show doesn't exactly do justice in telling us just how far east Dany has traveled to this point. In fact, Qarth is further away from Volantis (the nearest free city to Qarth) than Volantis is to King's Landing.

Just FYI, you were asking about the origin of the Histories and Lore videos. These were extras on the DVD set of the show along with "The Making of" and the directors and cast commentary. Somebody just decided to put them all on YouTube - not sure if they fall under "fair use rules", because they have been up for a long time and HBO did not complain - as far as I know (?)
