Happy birthday Damo! -- Riverlands: The Hound wins his trial by combat against Beric Donderrion and nearly cuts him in half with his sword; Thoros rushes over and starts praying and moments later Beric is back to being completely fine. The Brotherhood sends the Hound on his way, now absolved of the murder of Micah, the butcher's boy, in the eyes of the Lord of Light, though Arya is not at all happy about the outcome of this trial. After all, the Hound is on her "list" and this would have been an opportunity to take him out. Gendry decides the best thing for him will be to stay with the Brotherhood and work as a smith. Arya tries to convice him to come with her and join Robb's army, but he doesn't change his mind. That night, Arya gets the full story from Thoros and Beric about how many times Beric has died and come back to life, and Arya is hopeful for a moment that Ned could potentially be brought back, but they tell her it wouldn't work and that anyway, he's at peace now. Arya has been very much 'on the run' since Ned's death and really has not had a chance to properly grieve and here we see she is still trying to come to terms with it. -- North of the Wall: Tormund asks Jon some questions about the Night's Watch and the Wall, and Jon definitely exaggerates the number of members they have. I'm not really sure why except maybe to try and intimidate them. If he said, "We only have 150 and they're all tired and hungry and half of them aren't very good fighters," that would just make the wildlings even more motivated and ready to attack. Ygritte and Jon finally take their flirtation to the next level and Jon officially breaks his Night's Watch vows. He is kind of on an under cover mission though, so maybe it can be forgiven? -- Harrenhal: Jaime and Brienne are finally delivered to Lord Bolton and he looks pretty pissed off at his men for what they did to Jaime. Qyburn tends to his infected wound and we find out that he's technically not a maester anymore - his chain was taken away by the Citadel because of some unsanctioned "experiments" he took part in but he doesn't eloborate any more. Later Jaime and Brienne finally get to bathe and during it they have a discussion about oaths and the importance of keeping them vs upholding your personal morals and family duties at the same time when all of these seem to conflict. Jaime finally tells the whole story of what happened the day he killed Aerys Targaryen - Jaime had tried multiple times to get him to surrender peacefully but he refused. Eventually, the Mad King demanded Jaime kill his own father and was about to burn all the inhabitants of King's Landing alive with wildfire when Jaime stabbed him in the back. -- Riverrun: Rickard Karstark and a few others kill the two Lannister prisoners and there is a long discussion about what Robb should do with him. Ultimately, he decides to go against the advice of his wife, his mother and his uncle, and beheads Karstark, although it seems like none of the options were really great. As soon as he does, the rest of the Karstark forces (which made up almost half of his army) abandon him and march home. Robb is at a loss for what to do next until he suddenly is struck with an idea - to march on Casterly Rock, the Lannister's home. He will need more men to replace the Karstarks however, and the only ones available are the Freys, his would-be in-laws. -- Dragonstone: While Melisandre is away, Stannis almost seems to come out of his stupor a little bit. He goes to speak to his wife, but she seems fully under the sway of the red woman and the Lord of Light. He also speaks with his daughter who has some kind of mark on her face (which will be explained later). Shireen is eager to see Davos, but Stannis tells her he is rotting in the dungeons for being a traitor. Shireen visits Davos in the dungeons, bringing him a book about Aegon Targaryen conquering Westeros, and vows to help him learn to read. -- Essos: Jorah and Barristan talk about old times and previous kings they have served. They discuss whether Daenerys will be more worthy of ruling than any other king in their lifetime. Jorah also tries to be a bit sneaky and acts all surprised, "Oh, Robert Baratheon wanted her dead?" acting like he didn't know anything about it, and saying, "Couldn't any of you guys on the small council talk him out of it?" to figure out exactly how much Barristan knew about Jorah sending the letters to Illyrio/Varys. Once he's satisfied that Barristan is in the dark about it, he's a bit happier, but it doesn't last long. Barristan immediately starts questioning whether or not Jorah should be at Dany's side when she goes to Westeros, and Jorah takes great offense to that. After all, Barristan has just arrived and Jorah has been through *everything* with Daenerys. They've even almost died together on a few occasions; for Jorah, it's very emotional. From Barristan's point of view though, it's all practical - he's thinking, "We all want the same outcome, and this is the best way to get that outcome, so why wouldn't you go along with whatever's best?" Meanwhile, Dany meets Grey Worm, who the Unsullied have appointed as their leader, and she learns how they get their new names once they are cut - she gives the option for them to take new names, but Grey Worm explains this one is lucky because its the one he had when he became free. -- King's Landing: Cersei asks Littlefinger to dig up some dirt on the Tyrells before he leaves town and he agrees. Tyrion meets with Olenna about the cost of the royal wedding and she agrees to pay for half of it, but not before she flexes on him about how much food, livestock, and manpower her family has already provided to the capital. Sansa is getting excited at the prospect of marrying Loras and getting out of King's Landing (and getting away from Joffrey and Cersei) but little does she know of the many plots unfolding all around her. Littlefinger's spy Olyver, while trying to dig up the dirt Cersei requested, ends up finding out something much more interesting from Loras - that he will soon be engaged to Sansa. Littlefinger meets with Sansa to see if she still plans to leave town with him, and as soon as he sees that she has changed her mind, you can see how pissed he gets. He goes to Cersei and Tywin with the info and Tywin comes up with a plan he likes much better. He breaks the news to Cersei and Tyrion that they will have to marry Loras and Sansa, respectively, gives them a stern talking to, and then leaves them stewing in their mutual unhappiness.

Ned said that his father had told him Barristan was the greatest swordsman he'd ever seen (Ned's father fought with Barristan during a war where the last of an alternate line of Targaryen blood tried to take the throne during the reign of the king before the mad king iirc, Barristan slew this rebel leader who was said to be able to kill a horse with a single punch). Ned himself has someone different he regards that way -- Ser Arthur Dayne is sadly not mentioned much in the show, he wielded a sword made of meteorite called Dawn that was only ever granted to members of House Dayne who proved worthy as swordsmen and earned the title of Sword of the Morning. he knighted Jaime who idolised him and was killed by Ned and his men in battle doing his duty as a kingsguard to House Targaryen. Ned recalls this old fight after he's wounded and knocked out by Jaime in king's landing, but that memory-pondering by Ned never made it into the show adaptation sadly. after the fight, Ned does the respectful thing of returning the sword Dawn to House Dayne (contrast that to how he himself is treated by the Lannisters: they use his own family's ancestral sword Ice to cut off his head, and they still have it now rather than returning it to Robb... granted, they are still at war with Robb whereas Ned and House Dayne were not). im not trying to be mean but i do find it funny you guys think Walder wont be aware of his own king's marriage. hope you dont consider it spoilery for me to correct you there, but i do believe it is something the show assumes you will assume he is knowledgeable of. the king of the north and riverlands getting married is a big deal, theres a whole new queen now! in fairness, the marriage hasnt seemed to have really been made into such a big deal in general, but they clearly arent being actually secretive about it so im sure its well known far and wide. a king marrying isnt a small thing. you may also recall that Frey men joined Robb's army when the Stark-Frey deal was struck (in the books they angrily abandon him following his marriage... the show does not explicitly state this has happened but i would assume it did). happy birthday!

Jaime's monologue in the bath with Brienne is a top 5 scene in the entire show for me. So much illumination into his character....how vulnerable he is naked in the bath with Brienne after having just lost his sword hand and completely baring his soul to her. It completely makes you think twice about how you feel about Jaime as a person even though he's done some of the most despicable things on screen you've ever seen a human being do. Just brilliant.

It was so cold it that cave John Snow became Littlefinger.

Cersei was looking to get a merit badge, and Tywin was all out of merit badges!!! 😂😂😂

An aside on Sansa's hair: (I would love to do a master's thesis on the evolution of the hairstyles of all the women in this show, but I just want to talk about Sansa right now because my girl is going through it!) If you were to go back and look at season 1, episode 1, you would see that Sansa has her hair done in a pretty typical Northern style, with a couple of braids on top of her head but most of her hair down and flowy. She wears it like this when the Baratheon/Lannister convoy from King's Landing arrives at Winterfell and at the big feast that night when she's making googly eyes at Joffrey. There's also a scene were Catelyn is fixing Sansa's hair for her, so we can take it that these styles are important to northern culture/their family. That night, when she talks to Cersei for the first time, she's very impressed with how elegant she is, and Cersei has her hair up in an *extremely* elaborate style with an intricate weaving of braids on top of her head and some hair jewelry afixed in the middle like a crown. Later in season 1, after arriving in King's Landing, and after Joffrey's true personality starts to show itself, Sansa enters this phase of trying to prove how obedient and "good" she can be. She can't understand why Joffrey seems to hate her so she starts trying to emulate Cersei in every way to prove that she will also be a good queen one day. In episode 6, she has her hair done exactly how Cersei had hers done in episode 1 (I wish these comments would let me attach pictures). Her septa notices this and comments on it: - Septa Mordane: "You wear your hair like a real southern lady now." - Sansa: "Well, why shouldn't I? We're in the south." - Septa Mordane: "It's important to remember where you come from. I'm not sure your mother would like these new styles." Also, in season 1, episode 9, when they are standing at the Sept of Baelor and Ned is making his confession, Cersei and Sansa look almost identical - they have the same updo on top of their heads with the same two braids coming down on either side. It's like Sansa thinks if she ingratiates herself into their society fully, the safer she will be. She's not an outsider, she's one of them! After Ned's death, Sansa becomes disillusioned with the Lannisters, but we see in season 2 she still mostly wears her hair in the southern style - at formal events, up in an extravagant style, and during most other times, down with the 2 front pieces in braids and tied in the back, just like Cersei does. She's doing this as a way to hide though. It's like camoflauge. All throughout season 2, we see how beaten down by Joffrey and Cersei she is, and how meekly she responds when they try to get a rise out of her. Trying to fit in with everyone else is a part of that. In season 2, episode 10, we once again see Cersei and Sansa with *identical* hairdos (a big intricate braided style plopped on top of their heads with the two curled pieces coming down on either side of their necks) when Loras asks Joffrey to marry Margaery in front of everyone in the throne room. Now so far in season 3, Sansa has been a bit lost - she's not engaged to Joffrey anymore and she doesn't really have a place in the world. So far, we have only seen her wear her hair in the casual style, all down with the two front pieces pulled back. That is, up until this episode. Sansa now has a new person to look up to and emulate. Margaery is sweet, confident, sure of herself, beautiful, powerful, and all the things Sansa wants to be. You would think Sansa should hate her, after all, Margaery "stole" her fiance away from her, but Sansa sees her as a cool older sister figure. Plus, now that she is looking forward to marrying Loras, she can't wait to really become a member of their family. She copies Margaery's style of all over waves with all her hair pinned up behind her head and then loose down her back. Littlefinger immediately notices this when they have their meeting at the docks and it's part of what lets him know that the information his spy gave him about Loras and Sansa is true. Its a symbol that the Tyrells' influence over her is stronger than his. He comments on it, but she is embarrased that he noticed and shrugs it off: - Littlefinger: "Your hair is different." - Sansa: "Is it?" - Littlefinger: "Lady Margaery wears it that way." - Sansa: "Many ladies wear it this way."
