if you guys thought this episode was good, the next is even better. and the next after that. and the next. welcome to GoT season 4.

Kristin Carter

In reference to one of your questions in the intro: in season 4 episode 4, Sam and Jon have a conversation about Bran - Sam tells Jon he wishes that he could have convinced Bran to come back to Castle Black with him, but he was determined to go north of the Wall.

Vabbi

Tywin definitely isn't stupid. Remember what he told Cersei last episode: "The Tyrells are our only true rival." As far as Tyrion, Tywin only wants one thing: He wants him out of the picture.

Greenseer is not really mentioned much in the show itself but it will have been mentioned in a few of the Histories and Lore videos particularly the ones to do with The Children of the Forest. I imagine there will be more mention in the season 4 histories and lore :)

Guys I live for the long intros and outros! It's so fun to see people passionate about this world

Melanie Vine

You're right they didn't show Lady O put the poison in his wine but you can see her remove the stone. I believe Tommen was meant to be 12 in the show but as an actor he was 17ish. Weird old world!

Vabbi

Yup - Remember, by the end, Tywin didn't want Tyrion to be executed - he wanted him to confess guilt so he could send him to the Wall and send Jaime to Casterly Rock to further the Lannister line. Shae's testimony was meant to push Tyrion into saying he was guilty. But what wasn't planned was Tyrion's final outburst. That ruined everything Tywin had planned, which is why Tywin was trying to stop Tyrion during his final speech. As for Varys' testimony, your instinct is correct - Varys didn't say anything more than what was necessary, he didn't throw Tyrion under the bus or admit anything else Tyrion had said or done, he only answered the judges' questions. Likely Varys wouldn't have testified at all, but he was probably asked to by the Lannisters, and refusing would look very suspicious. And for the trial by combat, it IS a rule that the accused can name a champion - they absolutely have that right, especially in the case where the accused isn't fit to fight themselves. As for who Tyrion's champion would fight? Remember - there is one specific person that Cersei would ABSOLUTELY choose. Someone who would ensure Tyrion loses.

Great stuff again, worth the wait :D

To help refresh your memory a bit further, they are both looking at a map of the north and Jon asks: "How far can a crippled boy, carried by a simpleton can go?" and "All the wildling villages have been abandoned, except..." before pointing at Craster's keep.

As the pie arrives, you can see Joffrey placing his wine cup on the table in front of Lady Oleanna, and then after the pie/dove slashing (LOL), he picks it back up... That is motive and opportunity, as they say... 😉

Jade

Tyrion’s speech is my favourite of the whole series! 🙌🙌🙌

Melanie Vine

That was the best performance from Peter Dinklage. My favourite episode!

Meryl Lim

That conversation with Tywin and Jaime shows that, whether or not Tywin believed that Tyrion was guilty, he used Joffrey's death as an opportunity to get everything he wants: He can get rid of Tyrion and get Jaime to resign from the king's guard and take his place at Casterly Rock.

Jade

I bet Nick is glad to see that Theon is still doing ok 😂😂

Joe Brown

my interpretation is that while tywin will go to war when another house seizes one of his own, executing one of his own himself doesnt have the same blow to reputation

Joe Brown

i dont think they use the word "greenseer" in the show, they just say jojen and bran "have the sight"

One note about the Bank of Braavos. It is true that they got no army, but they got ALL THE MONEY!!! If you don't pay them, they can buy an army of sell-swords, or they can finance your rivals, or they can hire faceless men/ninja-assassins (i.e. remember Jaqen H'ghar?) to kill you. The point is, like Lady Oleanna said: "the Bank of Braavos ALWAYS gets their due".

Calu

Also, about the trial by combat. You can always pick a champion, but that champion HAS TO AGREE!!! You cannot just pick a random person and force him/her to fight for you. Otherwise, it would make no sense. Every criminal would be picking Barristan Selmy, or Jaime Lannister (when he had TWO hands), or Loras Tyrell, or The Hound... LOL

Joe Brown

if trials by combat required the accused to fight the accuser with no champions to represent either then tyrion might be feeling confident in being able to beat cersei, hes killed people in battle and she hasnt. both of them will get to choose a willing champion to represent them though, tyrion's lines in the eyrie make clear this is a *right*.

Joe Brown

with regards to your speculation on ramsay sending theon to pike to kill balon, it seems youre forgetting (since you dont mention it) in episode 2 when roose orders ramsay and theon to retake moat caitlin so that the rest of the bolton men can return to the north. roose had to be smuggled in. its true that ramsay doesnt always follow roose's exact commands, but i get the impression you guys are fully forgetting this.

Krystal

Tywin definitely does not believe that Tyrion did it but that doesn't matter. He just wants Tyrion out of the way. Right now, Tyrion is the only one of his children set to inherit Casterly Rock from him. As we know, Tyrion doesn't want that. Sending Tyrion to the wall guarantees that. Also, sending a Lannister to the Night's Watch is not necessarily the shame you guys think it is. Noble houses send their second and third born sons there. Sure, not as much as they used to, but it wouldn't necessarily bring shame on the Lannister name. You did not overestimate Tywin's intelligence, but maybe you underestimated his hatred for Tyrion

Tim Coates

The Bank of Bravos will repo the wall. Bad timing considering the white walkers.

Joe Brown

davos already argued stannis should hire sellswords but stannis said he couldnt afford it, which pushed davos to seek the help of the iron bank

Bruce G

Tyrion's speech is actually my favorite of the show so far. Shae's testimony just puts him past that breaking point, and all the frustration for the way he's been treated his entire life just comes out. You can see and hear the raw anger in every second of Dinklage's performance. Capped off by that defiant, "I'm not playing the game by your rules anymore" stare down with Tywin. Perfection.

Hunchooo

It’s a right for the accuser and the accused to either fight for yourself or elect a champion

CutterKilgore

Stannis makes sense as an insurance policy for the Iron Bank. If the Lannisters win, the Bank gets the Lannister debt money back from Tywin with interest. He'll have new alliances, lands, and taxes/levies once all the fighting dies down. If Stannis wins, the Bank gets Lannister debt back from Stannis, with interest. Either way, the Iron Bank gets what it's owed. I don't think there needs to be anything else read into that statement. It's just how, with gambling, they say the house always wins. The Iron Bank is just hedging its bets with Stannis there. Stannis was offering to repay them the vast Lannister debt if he wins. For a (relatively) small investment, the Bank could ensure it gets its money back even if the Lannisters don't prevail.

TLC

Nothing done or said in this series is thrown away... Here's a question to ponder... was Shea made to say what she did at threat of death, or was she a woman scorned and let loose her fury against Tyrion of her own accord? About the Iron Bank... the bank deals with the various rulers and leaders of the Cities and Kongdoms and always get whats due to them. So if a ruler default on a loan, the Bank will fund other claimants to the position or throne, who then pays the debts to secure their power.

Kristin Carter

-- Braavos: Stannis and Davos turn up at the Iron Bank to ask for a loan, which is denied at first. Davos gives one of his rousing speeches however, and manages to convince the bank to give them some cash. He visits Salladhor Saan again and recruits him once again to help them out. -- Dreadfort: Speaking of rousing speeches, Yara rocks up to the Dreadfort and motivates the Iron Islanders to save Theon, but when they get to him in the kennels they find him well and truly brainwashed. He's so far gone he can't even understand that they are there to save him, he just thinks he's being tricked again. After being chased off by Ramsay's hounds, Yara says Theon is "dead" which is kind of true, as he has now become Reek. As a reward for not leaving, Reek gets a bath and is told of his assignment by Ramsay, which will be to go to Moat Cailin and pretend to be Theon Greyjoy. -- Meereen: Daenerys is holding court, listening to the problems of her subjects who are coming to her for help. Some of their problems she finds quite easily solved, like the shepherd whose sheep were eaten by her dragon - she just pays him off handsomly, more than their worth, and he is happy. Other subjects are much more difficult to deal with. She speaks with one man who confronts her with the fact that some of the masters (like his own father) she crucified were actually innocent and spoke out against killing the slave children, trying to stop it from happening. She realizes she painted them all guilty with too broad of a brush, making her just as guilty as they were. Suddenly, she doesn't feel so righteous anymore. She asks how many more people she has to see and finds out hundreds more are still waiting in line to see her. -- King's Landing: At a small council meeting, the Hound's movements and Daenerys are both topics of conversation. Varys and Oberyn also have an interesting conversation in the throne room about desire after the meeting, and Varys hints for the first time that he might be interesting in ruling by glancing at the throne. Tyrion's trial finally begins, and from the start it is the definition of a kangaroo court - just an absolute farce. First, Tommen recuses himself, but somehow Tywin doesn't? I mean, conflict of interest much? Then the witnesses come up one by one and just lie their asses off - Meryn Trant, Pycelle, Cersei, and even Varys, although we understand why in his case. Seeing how poorly things are going, Jaime manages to work out a deal with Tywin - if Tyrion will be spared and allowed to join the Night's Watch, Jaime will fulfill all of his family duties that Tywin wants from him and leave the Kingsguard. Everything is going according to plan until the next witness comes out and its Shae - because of course, the whole point of this is to humiliate and hurt Tyrion to his very core. After beating him down over and over he finally snaps and we have Tyrion's epic crashout at the end of the episode where he goes off on the entire town. Let's face it, who hasn't felt like doing that a time or two? He won't go along with the "deal" and instead demands a trial by combat.
