I think I stated it back at the end of season 1 that you can definitely see the budget grow during the seasons. No way they pull off anything like this in season 1, and even the season 2 battle doesn't touch it in terms of production value. This was peak GOT popularity and they were pouring in money and it shows :)

I find it amusing that there is actually no character in the show whose name is Allister, lol. I get that it's probably too late to change it now, but as mentioned earlier by you guys: it's Alliser Thorne.

DN Reacts

I’ve been saying Alliser since we were corrected or sometimes I’ll just call him Thorne

Another episode 9 that takes place all in one location, just like Blackwater from season 2! And similarly, this one is all about a battle - this time, wildlings vs. Night's Watch. -- The Wall: Jon and Sam are at the top of the wall, fulfilling their duties as lookouts and talking about their experiences with Ygitte and Gilly, respectively. As the wildlings make their final preparations before they attack, Ygritte tells Tormund and the Thenns that she plans to kill Jon herself and warns them to stay away. Gilly turns up at the gates to Castle Black right at that moment. begging to be let in, but Pyp is following the rules by not opening them for anyone until Sam turns up and makes him. Sam makes a promise to Gilly that they will never be separated again. Suddenly, Mance's signal, "the biggest fire the North has ever seen," can be seen and the men of the Night's Watch know that the battle is about to begin. Alliser admits to Jon that he was right about sealing the tunnel when he sees Mance's forces north of the wall. Meanwhile, Sam hides Gilly in the larder and promises her that he'll live through the night. He and Pyp give themselves a pep talk before the fighting starts, right before Tormund and Ygritte's group storms the southern gate of the castle. The men on the ground focus on fighting Tormund's group while those on top of the wall use different techniques to try to take out some of Mance's group on the north side of the wall (including mammoths and a couple of giants). Janos Slynt freaks out and decides to hide, running into Gilly and Little Sam in the process. Ygritte hits Pyp in the neck with an arrow and he dies in Sam's arms. Jon, now in charge of the top of the wall, sends Grenn with a group of 5 men to protect the inner gate from the giant who is breeching the tunnel. Jon makes his way down below when they need help fighting, and when Ygritte spots him she pulls an arrow on him - she has a clear shot on him but can't bring herself to shoot him. Olly, who had been told by Sam to "find a weapon and fight them," sees this and shoots Ygritte in the back. Jon and Ygritte are able to say goodbye before she dies. By the end of the battle, Tormund is captured, Grenn and the others all died taking out the giant, and Mance's forces give up for the night, appearing to have not made any progress. Jon decides to head out north of the wall to try to get close enough to Mance to kill him, thinking this is the only way to disperse his troops and save what remains of the Night's Watch.
