Fun fact: this season is (loosely) based on A Dance With Dragons, the most recent book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Ian McElhinney who played Ser Barristan was a big fan of the books and reportedly very disappointed that his character was killed off in this season... as Barristan is very much still alive in the book. This also means this is the last season that the writers had books to work from. Curious to see how you guys feel about the next few!

Joe Brown

technically there is the odd thing in s6 that is book material

tiramisujen

P.S Ollie is a show only character, there is a completely different character who is Jon's steward and squire in the books

Joe Brown

you may think aemon telling jon to "kill the boy" is a metaphor about growing up, but actually he just really fucking hates olly (i havent watched yet i hope you dont make this same joke yourselves lol)

Have already said that this ain't my fav season, especially for Dany, but you guys saying you don't really get it- sort of hit it home for me, I think that is the point, she's lost and also doesn't get it, so it makes perfect sense for us as the audience to feel the same :P

Wendy

Thank you for the reaction. Love it.

I an not a huge fan of this season either but it has some high highs

I don't mean to defend all of Daenerys' actions - we have seen how she gives in to some of her worst impulses sometimes - I mean, she IS a Targaryen after all - but you guys realize she is in an intractable situation. This is why the term the "Mereenese Knot" was coined. In the books, George RR Martin made this situation so complicated, that still to this day, he has not been able to unravel it. The show paid homage to the the term, as a joke, to describe a weirdly complicated sexual position a few seasons back. lol In any case, Daenerys is trying to rule over a city in which each half of the people hate the other half to death. Where, on the one side, the nobles (aka the EX-SLAVE OWNERS!!! do NOT forget THAT!!!) conspire against her, want their slaves back, and are most certainly financing the Sons of the Harpy; and on the other side, the slaves she freed want ALL the nobles dead because they treated them like animals without any dignity, and believe violence is their only recourse. As disgusting as it may feel to her, re-opening the fighting pits, and a political marriage of convenience is the best idea she has had in a while. This has nothing to do with Daario. BTW, Do you really think that Daario's plan of "cleaning the city" street by street was going to work out without any violence??? I think the more likely result would have been a full-on civil war.

Yeah unfortunately Dany is one of my least favorite characters in the show even though she is absolutely my favorite in the books. The show made her arc incredibly archetypal and I personally find it really boring/samey since season 2. The King's Landing and the North arcs are full of political intrigue, drama, plotting and scheming. But Dany's arc? Feels more like a superhero flick. Compared to book Dany, show Dany is one of the characters most brutally butchered and simplified by the TV writers (I'd say Stannis is a close second)

Good episode but I think even you guys are starting to see how things just "feel different" than the way they used to in seasons past. There are various reasons for this but I think there are two big ones for sure. First, the show was just about caught up to the books at this point, and the writers were struggling to mesh what remained of the source material with their own creative input. While the first few seasons were mostly faithful to the books, by now certain storylines are completely changed or even omitted, characters have died who haven't died in the books, and it starts to just feel muddled/confused at points. Secondly, the show was massively popular by now and I feel the writers started catering to more of a mainstream audience. They wrote scenes or storylines in a way that just felt cliched or followed tropes. For instance Missandei and Grey Worm's romance subplot.....nothing like that in the books. Let's just throw that in there to give the romance genre fans something to watch. It's still a great show but to me this is the first season that you just feel a little dip in quality for those reasons. Having said that there's still some amazing episodes to come even in this season :)

Great Reaction. I know a lot of people are talking about the storylines coming up short at this point and moving forward but I promise there are more great episodes and storylines to come. Because I never read the books my enjoyment was never tainted by what had been changed. Don't worry about the naysayers just enjoy!!!

I loved Daenerys in S1. But she began to annoy me in S2 when she adopted her brother's sense of entitlement and demanded ship's from the merchant in Qarth. By this S5 episode, it is clear to me, but not to most of the audience, that she is simply a self-centered sociopath. I'll never understand why so many in the audience love and support her at this point. She demanded to be given ships on her terms in Qarth, but was refused. In the next city, Yunkai, she was actually given two trunks of gold and offered as many ships as she wanted for free. She stole the gold and said f-off to the ships. She demanded the end of slavery in return for the lives of the leaders. Clearly a fascistic move, and she becomes more of a fascist with each passing episode. She orders, or is responsible for the deaths of many people who may or may not deserve punishment. She never offers due process when judging her perceived enemies to be guilty. The writers have offered up numerous scenes of the killing of innocent people by her commands. And their's her stubborn refusal to take advice that she doesn't agree with. The audience is romanced by her mystical dragons and antislavery crusade. By definition, slavery is autocratic and imposed on the weak. But her methods of abolishing it are equally autocratic and imposed with bloody battles and mass executions without due process. In the end, her methods are no different than the slavers she condemns. The audience swoons because she's beautiful and a strong woman with convictions. ( Normally, admirable traits for most characters). She is at the center of multiple spectacular dramatic sequences, accompanied by heroic and inspiring music. And the audience cheers her actions without questioning them. But Daenerys is essentially a self centered sociopathic wanna' be dictator who doesn't deserve the adoration of her advisors, or the audience. You guys seem to be catching on to this. And that pleases me to no end. Don't get me wrong, I love watching all of this drama, dragonfire and mayhem. It's the majority of the audience blindly supporting her which disturbs me.

" ??????????????? wtf is fascistic about not taking deals with slavers and insisting on ending slavery?? acting like slavery can be abolished without leveraging force over the class of slavers who want to maintain their way of things is absurd, and calling doing so "fascistic" even more so.

I think you may have misunderstood Daario—his plan to "cleanse" Mereen was to execute every member of the noble class and take all their wealth to stop the SOTH; he wanted to make Daeny a pile of their heads taller than the pyramid. So her option was definitely the more diplomatic of the two, and she doesn't have many to give her better advice at this point

Missandei was right though. Dany does have a history of finding a third, better way. Like when Jorah and Ser Barriston were counseling her about whether or not to buy the Unsullied. Jorah said "do it" while Ser Barriston said "don't." She found a third, better way by seizing them and freeing them and asking them to serve under her. She sees solutions that aren't obvious and I think that's in part to how little exposure she's had to politics. She won't always be right...but she's trying in good faith. That's more than you can say for a lot of the characters in this show... Also, I personally have always found Selyse (Stannis' wife) to be a someone to pity more than anything. She is clearly a little addled from trauma. She probably grew up knowing she'd marry a Lord and dreaming of that and then, when she did, it was not at all what she hoped. She married a man who is cold and withholding and unaffectionate. She tried over and over to give him sons and they all died. We've seen how deeply that's scarred her. And I can't imagine Stannis being a emotionally, mentally, or physically supportive husband so all she felt with all that death was that she had failed her husband. And then she finally has a child who lives only for her to end up with Grayscale. As if having only a girl wasn't bad enough (in the GOT world, anyway), she was scarred and sickly. Then Melisandre comes along and Selyse is wooed easily by the promise of purpose. It's also a new way to support her husband/king. She embraces Melisandre, gives herself over to the Lord of Light, grateful to be seen and included for once. She's always struck me as a lonely, tired woman who desperately wants to win the attention and affection of the man she loves by being someone he finds worthy even with his high, cold standards. She's not a pleasant person. But again, the overriding feeling I've always had for her is pity.
