Not sure if you guys are aware, but this is what Brentford has done and continues to do. There owner was a gambler who uses the idea of moneyball as well.

I love, love, love this movie and I’m glad you guys enjoyed it as well! You’re right that you don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy it as it was one of the rare sports movies to have had massive mainstream appeal. It was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar which is a rare feat for a sports film. As you figured out Moneyball is based on the real-life 2002 Oakland A’s. Billy Beane is real, Peter Brand is based on Paul DePodesta, and all of the players named were real. What some detractors of the film will mention is that Moneyball glosses over the real stars of the team. While Hatteberg, Bradford, and Justice were important to the A’s success they had a massive three-headed monster leading their starting rotation in Barry Zito, Mark Mulder, and Tim Hudson who barely made appearances in the film. They also had 2002 AL MVP Miguel Tejada leading the offense who was only shown a few times and maybe mentioned once. So some don’t like the movie because they feel it manipulates the truth to tell it’s story. I’d counter that by saying this is not a documentary on the 2002 Oakland A’s. Zito, Mulder, Hudson, Tejada, etc. don’t serve the narrative of the film and their inclusion may have made the film feel a bit bloated. This film is more about the genesis of modern baseball analysis and finding value in people whom society have deemed worthless. To that end the film is a masterpiece with genius performances from Pitt and Hill. I’m glad you guys enjoyed the Trade Deadline scene. It’s widely considered one of the best scenes in the movie. 😁As for the watch-along, I really enjoyed it! Don’t worry about pausing too much or talking too much. I’m here to watch you guys watch the movie haha If I wanted a no commentary watch through I’d watch it by myself! Can’t wait for the next one! P.S. I believe Billy was referring to model Fabio Lanzoni who is more commonly known as just “Fabio.”

Glad you guys enjoyed, it's a fantastic movie for sure. I do love the scenes depicting the behind the scenes work of a GM like the trade deadline scene, or just having to tell players they've been traded/cut. My favorite has to be the ending scene with the player who didn't realize he hit a home run. I think it's a beautiful metaphor that doesn't just apply to sports but life in general. We often don't realize in the moment the wonderful things we are accomplishing whether it's through your family, career, or personal growth. There are so many classic sports films out there it's hard to pick a favorite. For Baseball this is probably top five for sure. My nostalgia favorite is The Sandlot though.

This was a great watch. I had not seen the whole movie, just clips and highlights. Your comment that you don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the movie was spot on. I had just moved to the Bay Area during the 20-game streak, so was aware of the hype but hadn't really had time to become an A's fan. I'm from Philly so always was and always will be a Phillies fan. But have come to appreciate the A's and their legacy. Too bad about their move to Las Vegas -- it's always about the money. I live a mile and a half from the Coliseum -- just drove past it today. Sad to see the ending of the A's era in Oakland.

This is one of my favorite movies, not just sports movies, so I am always down for watching it! And now you truly understand what a GM is! Who fills that role in soccer like the EPL? Nick you might have been referring to me, I said it's one of the most romantic movies ever made. It just fills your heart with pure baseball love. You might have noticed the manager Art Howe was played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Not a huge part but he put everything into every role.

Great reaction, really enjoyed it. I hope you continue to do these full length, uncut sports movie reactions. You HAVE to watch Field of Dreams at some point. As for how often you should pause the movie for commentary, my preference would be to do it as little as possible. I think you did a good job here by keeping the pausing to a minimum. The most important thing would be to avoid interrupting any dramatic tension.

Richard Burks

Brilliant and engrossing movie. I can tell that you guys enjoyed it a lot too. Who knew you guys would be good movie critics as well as sports aficionados. Baseball is such an unique and wonderful game. And they keep stats on everything. I really wish that you guys would have actually experienced it growing. Because of the long season and huge number of game played it is the most accessible for families and is the least expensive to attend. People even bring very small children and even babies to the games. It is very kid and family friendly. Too bad Billy didn't know when to jump ship because I would have definitely accepted the Red Sox offer.

Zach Wilson

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Liam D

The scene of Hatteberg’s home run is legitimately one of the best scenes in all of film, the music in that moment especially. Numerous baseball fans have put the sound over more recent clutch/special home runs, and it brings back the nostalgia of seeing that scene and hearing that music for the first time. It’s all just… perfect Anyways, I’d highly recommend your next baseball movie be Field of Dreams or 42, and if you want to watch one of the dozens of iconic baseball comedies, I’d highly recommend Major League, The Benchwarmers, or the Sandlot. Great work gents!

Connor

I'm not even a baseball fan but this movie is a classic

Now that you've seen the movie, you should react to this on your main channel: What Moneyball LEFT OUT: The Oakland A's Big Three link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mELJw2DgBIE

I hope you guys watch field of dreams for ur next baseball movie it's also a classic

Thanks for this. Will add it to the movie list 👍

This movie helps illustrate the allure of professional leagues with a salary cap. However improbable, I can always believe that my NFL, NHL, or NBA team has a chance to win. Whereas in baseball/ soccer, you root for a team that literally has 0.00001% chance of even acquiring and retaining the talent needed to sniff a championship

Chris

I became a patron just to watch you guys react to Moneyball! It's one of my favorite movies of all time! I'm glad y'all enjoyed!

AnalogKid

Gotta watch Major League next

Pete Finch

Pete Finch here to watch this with you guys. I'm as excited as when I finally got my best friend to watch this back in 2011!

Pete Finch

Can I add to these? I can! So yeah in the Northeast someone saying they'll pray for me is weird as fuck as I'm not religious - you go down South and they're all about that shit down there. Basically just amounts to where you are in this enormous country and knowing your clients/paitents/players/etc.

Jim Todd

I know I'm a bit late to the party on this reaction, but I loved it. If you enjoyed the trade deadline scene, you'll love Draft Day with Kevin Costner. Costner plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns and does a fabulous job juggling deals with other GM's, trying to gain an advantage and get the players he wants. Draft Day is not based on a true story.

T K

Fabio is a male model and basically was a living meme before memes

JVTrickypants

Aaron Sorkin, one of the best writers ever (A Few Good Men, Social Network, Jobs, The West Wing), did a rewrite and added the trade scene. He's a master of dialogue as tension.

Great reaction

Yeah its not really super common amongst the vast majority Americans anymore to just randomly tell people that you'll be praying for them and their family for no reason whatsoever, however depending on how church-going the family may be.. you'll hear it occassionally. More so in the Bible belt/Midwest (talking U.S. geography here boys!) Like... I go to church regularly, and know people from church that would definitely say that. However it was obviously used here to kind of indicate what a "weirdo" and "outsider" Bradford is.

Seth Tornow

7 over .500... basically just stating where they thought they needed to be "at the time", or at least on pace for by a certain time, to end up with the record they needed by the end of the season.

Seth Tornow

This is a "true story" in that, this season happened, they did try this approach, and these people are real, but there's a lot of creative liberties. And they completely leave out the fact that this team DID have an MVP hitter (Miguel Tejada) and one of the BEST pitching rotations in baseball (Hudson, Mulder, and Zito), and these guys aren't even mentioned in the movie.

Mark

such a good movie

Zoran24

the way other channels do it, is they have a timer and countdown for people to sync their own copy of the movie. idk if there would be any issues with patreon doing it this way.

MJ

I imagine this is Chelsea's new approach of buying players based on data, in the post roman abramovich era.

Grace Brown

They need to watch the movie the hustle with adam sandler about basketball! I loved it

nick mccoy

4th attempt to get “Any Given Sunday” added to the docket! Loving the reactions!
