In this epic episode, an incredible throw ices a Minnesota Vikings win; Patrick Mahomes admits he's not much of a scrambler, but it pays off in an extremely tense game; Marcus Mariota may be turning a corner.

If you liked the underhand shovel pass Mahomes came up with, you guys should watch Brett Kollmann’s video on that entire family of plays. https://youtu.be/E9ea_d1L2WE?si=Ikgm-lI4e_pV9t4S

In the US we play "telephone" in elementary school to teach us not to gossip and how things change when told from person to person. I'm sure you guys have a version of this. Basically one person whispers a phrase to the first person then they have to whisper what they heard to the next then at the end the last person tells what they heard and it's never the same as it starts. Funny but educational as well.

Ah, I’ve heard of Telephone. We did have pass the message. It did also have another name when I was younger but I’m sure it’s politically incorrect now.

Understanding play calls isn't that much of a problem. Every player in the huddle knows what part of the call to look out for and they'll have a great understanding of that part. The player relaying the info has to know it all tho and I have a lot of respect for that.

scrambling just refers to when a QB escapes the pocket with his legs and runs around. you can scramble and run for yardage yourself downfield, or you can also scramble around in order to buy time to make a throw. Mahomes technically does scramble a lot but he mostly does it to make throws. other guys like Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson scramble more to run for yards themselves because they're elite runners. also note that QBs can also have designed runs called for them. this would not be considered a scramble - scrambling is done on pass plays where the pocket collapses and you need to get out.

When Kirk is calling out 58 he's telling his line that 58 is the middle linebacker, it helps them adjust their blocking without looking up. I'm not smart enough to tell you how/why though.

if you think of scrambling eggs in a bowl, the whisk is moving in a fast motion- but not always in the same direction and in it's a lot of chaos in a small contained space (the bowl) So when you see a QB trying to evade the "pass rush" he's trying everything to not get tackled, but has to stay behind the LOS (Line Of Scrimmage) to keep the forward pass a legal option.

I didn't realize that this may also be another "exclusive-to-Americans" thing....The game "Telephone" is based on ridiculing Gossip. It's to prove that when information (or a story) is being told to one person and that person tells another person and that person tells another person etc., the last person to hear the information/story will most likely have a completely different version of the information/story than the original telling. So in "Telephone" (usually it's an activity amongst a big group, mostly played amongst kids) a story will be whispered to one person, then that person whispers to the person next to them the same story and so on and so on and the point of the game is to have the final person in the group retell the story as close to the original version as they can...It's fun to see how wildly different the last person's version of the story is.

We have exactly the same game in the uk but for some reason it’s called Chinese whispers 😂

The things I do because of you.....That was really a difficult watch at the end 🤦‍♂️

A truly eye opening episode. As you can see football is much like a chess game. Moves and counter moves. Taking what the defense give you. Knowing plays perfectly and executing them flawlessly with physicality is the name of the game in the NFL. It has long been understood that the NFL acronym stands for Not For Long. Meaning that this league is all about results. And if the results aren't there then you won't be around for long. BTW I recently retired from 30 years as a process engineer in the aerospace industry and that was a common theme in our workplace as well. We never stopped trying to improve our processes and the efficient allocation resources. Pretty stressful environment, just like the QB position in football, where you literally have to know everyones job on each play.

A chess game is a great way to describe it! The job sounds very full on Rich so I hope you enjoy your retirement 😀
