I looked at all the information I had just gained as my eyes widened. So the three missions were events that would happen and couldn’t be stopped. I almost opened the starter bundle before I realized where I was. If the king saw me spawn in a bundle of stuff, he might kill me for being a witch or for a similarly stupid reason. I stood, waiting for him to send us away, which didn’t take much longer. I could see the furrowed brows of my two uncles as they led us back to our rooms, knowing that the king had just provoked a war.

There was no chance that Jon Arryn would turn over Ned Stark or Robert Baratheon to the king, which meant war, and everyone knew it, and while most would come under threat of their king… Some might not, but everyone saw the writing on the wall. The king was mad, even if they helped stop the rebellion, another would spring up shortly after, unless Rhaegar became a kinslayer and kingslayer to take his father’s crown.

That was its own can of worms. Neither of them cared much for the political maneuvering, would they protect the king even at the cost of their lives, even though he was such a vile man, even if it meant that the better ruler would be killed? It was hard to tell until it happened. All they knew was that the Kingsguard were loyal to the king.

We helped them take off their armor as we called it an early day. The raven would be sent out requesting Jon to bring Ned and Robert to the capital to be slain, which meant that the king was done dealing with people. He most likely went off to have brutal sex with his wife, and Daenerys would be conceived in the next month or so, around the same time as Jon and Robb Stark.

That was another thing I had to stop before the worst outcome happened. I needed to stop my Aunt Ashara Dayne from having a stillborn child, which drove her to kill herself. I’d send a raven to make sure she was close to Elia Martell; it would make sense for her to be near her, as she was her best friend. I’d have to make sure Elia fled the capital once we found out that Rhaegar was killed, so the Mountain wouldn’t slay her. I’d have to convince my uncles to take her with them when they went to protect Lyanna at the Tower of Joy.

We finally finished and made our way back to our shared room. I stared over at my cousin, wondering if I should bring him in on my plans, and it only made sense to. We were too close; not only would he see me sneaking off constantly, hiding things would become almost impossible, and could drive a wedge between the two of us. “Hey Gerold… Want to see some magic?”

Chapter 05

He leaned out of bed with an eyebrow raised as he waited for me to do whatever it was I had planned. I opened up the status screen again, which I could do with a thought, and selected to open the starting bundle. A dozen golden dragons and a Valyrian steel knife dropped to the ground with a clang, which made him shoot up in shock.

“By the seven, how did you do that?” I smirked at him as I grabbed the knife to look at it. The dagger wasn’t very long, it felt almost natural to hold even in my child-sized hand as I read the inscription in English. GoT both spoke and wrote differently from English; it was one of the few things I was glad I didn’t have to relearn after I found out. I couldn’t help but read the inscription out loud.

“Dance of blood and conquest.” I flipped it over to see the inscription on the other side, this time not speaking it out loud as I read. ‘King of the conquest.’ I barely had enough time to finish reading it before the writing disappeared. The blade was very similar to the Catspaw dagger, but it had a black handle with white dragonbone accents and a blue sapphire instead of a ruby.

I could feel a hidden power in the dagger, and I instinctively cut my forearm, which drew a wince and a sucking in of breath from my cousin. I felt the blade bind to me as I noticed the dagger absorb the blood that drained onto it, slightly dying the sapphire a shade darker. I knew it would help smooth out problems with blood magic, assisting when it was necessary.

Most magic or rituals in the Game of Thrones weren’t put one thing, get another out one hundred percent of the time. Magic was reactive; a spell that had worked before might suddenly not work, or even backfire. Using blood magic to heal a wound was expensive, costing the sacrifice years of their life to heal even minor wounds, and all of that could backfire, causing complications.

A spell might fail, or cause damage, at the very worst, it could even kill both people, the recipient and the donor. This dagger would smooth out the process, filling this all the way full will allow me to guarantee success, I knew that was the case when I bound to it with my own blood. There were other similar weapons, I think… Valyrian steel was for blood magic, but who knew what people used for necromancy or water magic.

Water dancing was a sword fighting style that preferred a rapier, except that the style came from the Rhoynar people, who weren’t as famous for using the rapier, but the spear. Perhaps there was some overlap there, wielding a spear with the water dancer style might allow them to control water, except there had to be more to it than that.

Most of the Rhoynar were wiped out, but many moved to Dorne, where they became House Martell. Damn, I should have picked that over one of the other houses. I might have gotten the option to learn water magic if I had. I wasn’t thinking about water magic at the time, though, and had forgotten the history behind it. I looked up to see that Gerold was now staring at me with his brows furrowed. “That must be an interesting blade for you to stare at it that long.”

“No, I just got stuck in my own head thinking. I… The kingdom will go to war soon, and we have to do whatever we can to take advantage of the situation. I view you as a brother… And I’m letting you know right now that I plan to do things that might be considered evil to get the most benefit out of this war.” I closed my eyes, trying to direct my pigeon home. The pigeon that I could warg into lived on the windowsill of our room. Gerold and my uncles knew about my warging ability, and everyone knew to keep it a secret.

I immediately had a better connection to my warg animals than the child version of me; I was just more focused, and warging into it was possible. Before it got back, I opened up my status menu again to look at the mutations I had.

Increased height

Increased martial prowess

Increased bone density

Dragon blood

Improved magical power

Slight fire resistance

Slight cold resistance

Increased lung capacity

Incest resistance

Incest based psychosis

Most of the traits were grey, except improved magical power and dragon blood, which were green and blue mutations, respectively. I had a negative trait, which I got rid of, giving me a single point. Opening the starter bundle gave me ten mutation points, which would allow me to improve one of my traits. Right now, most weren’t that important, upgrading the green trait took 25 points, while 50 for the rare, which I might wait for. But I wanted to test it out right now and see how it works, so I chose martial prowess and upgraded it, leaving me with a single mutation point.

The name changed from increased to improved martial prowess. I just knew that the physical and mental bonus I received from the mutation had improved, and I could pick up and learn weapons even easier than I could before. I was already fairly skilled for my age, but over the course of years of practice, it would add up to a significant difference. Nothing seemed to be overwhelming; it wasn’t like I got the super soldier serum or anything like that.

I was just taller and stronger than a boy my age should be, harder to burn to death or freeze to death in the cold. The magical traits were the only thing that stood out, and it would take a while before I could upgrade either of them. I needed to start killing, but I was only eight. My bird finally arrived and I warged into it. It was easier to do when it was in view of myself; I needed to practice more to keep increasing the range.

I flew through the air, looking for a few things of importance, as I mentally mapped the city. It might be a long while before I get to see this again after all. Figuring everything out, I flew back before unwarging, where I grabbed the bird and tied it up. Gerold looked on in confusion as I was acting far out of the norm for how I normally acted. I began to explain.

“Pigeons live for only a few years. This pigeon is already near the end of her life. She’s raised children, lived a good life compared to what she would have if she didn’t get chosen as my first warg animal… But I need to sacrifice an animal to get stronger.” I laid her down in a tin bowl before grabbing a torch off the wall and lighting it. Gerold’s eyebrows rose as I burned the pigeon alive while explaining further. “I wish I had the time and money to do a proper ritual, but a blood sacrifice to lengthen my life is the easiest way to get stronger.”

I felt the changes to my blood magic as I finished the blood and… Blood quest, and freed up my warg slot for a stronger animal. The pigeon served its purpose, but the adult version that replaced the child me had no connection with it. Gerold was pretty fine with me burning my pigeon in front of him; he couldn’t understand why I did it, but from how I was speaking, he knew I was doing it for some reason and trusted me.

The few minutes of life I gained from sacrificing the pigeon were a terrible reward, but I’d need far more resources to do a real ritual; that was the only one I could do with the lack of resources this body had. I was going to try and replace one bird with another. If I could find an eagle, that would be my first choice, but I would settle on a hawk. If I couldn’t find either, I’d pick a raven and just have to deal with it.
