Got carried away with my E-Ink Frames #1/3 (Patreon)

Ok, playing catch up on all the crazy projects I've been building and got far too distracted by these little devices!

As many of you know, wall art has long been an annoyance of mine - we've automated lighting so you are no longer stuck with the same old light colours. This lighting can also shift the hue of your walls, meaning wall paints are no longer stuck with 'just' Magnolia walls forever.... but all the art, posters, photos and the rest.... well they required manual replacement every time you wanted to refresh your room.

Now I've built DIY frames myself and Samsung do their 'Frame TVs' - but they have those shiny glass screens and really can't solve the problem as you'd need to fill your walls with wires and hundreds of TVs to get anywhere close!

This is why e-ink art frames have excited me so much, now that colour ones have arrived! There's 2-3 main brands as far as I can see on the market - they all functionally use the same EInk Spectra 6 technology, so they're all pretty much the same. But Switchbot's have cleverly been designed to fit standard frames (eg Ikea) so you can easily swap them out for any new styles you fancy.

Charge them, hang them and two years later usb charge again..... art can now be changed in seconds through your phone.

Oh my goodness, my head exploded! Hence I've got 84 photos, 2 shorts and a video I want to do including these! I'll try and stagger them so I'm not hitting you with all of them at once (or you'll realise I truly am mad!!), but I'd LOVE to get your creative ideas!!

Anyway, I had to share some of my starter ideas - you can use these for sooooo much more than photos - think cheat sheets, recipe lists, board game rules, BBQ menus, seasonal events, birthday celebrations oh it goes on!!

Ideas on a postcard..... or an e-ink frame... ;)

Love this idea! Always had an idea of putting something similar on the backsplash in the kitchen for art and recipes. Hilarious photoshoots! Sort of a "Maker's Boudoir" series. And let's face it - at this point I think we all know you're truly mad!

😂😂😂 Oh I know, I'm plotting dozens around the house!! That said the custom art in my dining room was ridiculously expensive to get custom printed (I mean they were my art in the first place!!), plus it then fades over time... can you tell I'm trying to justify the awesomeness to myself??? I could tailor my whole dining room to the guest's interests, if I'm playing board games, then the whole room can fit the mood, it's endlessly fun!

I’ve been looking at these e-ink frames for a while. They’ve come a long way recently in terms of picture quality and color fidelity. One thought I had was to use them in your music/media room. If you’re a concert goer like me, it would be great to have them display some photos you’ve taken of your favorite artists. For me that would be an endless loop of shots of Gary Numan. LOL. It makes the room more personal and surrounds you with memories of really fun times. I’m all about memories these days. LOL.

I know!!! I've been watching waiting for them impatiently for about 5 years I think!! They're soo much better than those photo frame solutions, which were never going to be the proper solution. Awesome idea for music rooms - you could schedule them to change every night and every day come in to new memories!

Hi Katie - love the idea of the Art Frame but can it actually display photographs or is it just limited to converting the photographs to a limited spectrum for an artistic take?

Oh it definitely can - you'll see in a couple of these shots I've included photos (eg silly photos of me!). I found certain photos like super noisy ones might be a struggle on the really small screen due to pixellation, but an ordinary photo frame is probably it's core function!
