In the end of the previous chapter, he had already decided that he wasn't going to go with any of the Human Rank cultivation methods the Sect Archives offer. So the choice was between either going back empty handed or accepting Wei Lin's offer right now. So, instead he decided to go back with the World Tree Sutra and if it didn't work out, he'd take up Wei Lin on his offer (end of this chapter, Wei Lin mentions the offer is still open). As for Azure needing other techniques for reference, that's only something they can attempt after first seeing what info the World Tree Sutra has, for them to do that, they need to take it out now.
