My guess? Timeloop, Church Feng is stuck in a timeloop and trying to manipulate things to ensure everyone lives. I'm kind of extrapolating from the one comment he made about not following protocol sometimes saving people. But if the timeloop theory is true then maybe he feels absolutely certain that going to the shrine first is the key to success somehow.

Ok but what about the energy from the beast, and his hunger looking at the map? Maybe he’s planning to get some treasure and the beast is summoned/control by him for the outcome he wants from time loop But I’m leaning more on he’s being control by the masked one, with coming back from death and all
