Once the arena was cleared of eliminated participants, Elder Wan turned his attention back to those of us who remained. The space felt vast now, forty-three teams scattered across an arena designed to hold thousands of spectators.

"Now," the elder announced, his voice carrying a note of anticipation, "we come to the true test of individual prowess. The Grand Outer Sect Tournament bracket stage."

He gestured, and a massive formation array in the air above us began to glow. Numbers and lines appeared, forming the outline of a tournament bracket that stretched across the sky like a constellation.

"The tournament is designed as a single-elimination bracket," Elder Wan explained, apparently noting the confused expressions on some of the faces. "One hundred and twenty-eight outer sect disciples will compete. Only one will emerge as champion."

"Seven rounds await you," he continued. "The Round of 128, where many will fall in the opening exchanges. The Round of 64, where true talent begins to separate from mere ambition. The Round of 32, where techniques clash and legends are born. The Round of 16, known as the Dragon Gate, where passing through marks a disciple as truly exceptional."

The bracket continued to expand above us, showing the progression from hundreds of participants down to a single winner.

"Then come the Quarterfinals, where only eight remain. The Semifinals, where monsters face monsters. And finally, the Grand Final, where destiny itself will be decided.”

"Single elimination," I muttered quietly. "No second chances, no margin for error."

"That's how real combat works," Azure pointed out. "You don't get do-overs when someone's trying to kill you."

Fair point, though it didn't make the format any less intimidating. One bad matchup, one moment of carelessness, one opponent with the perfect counter to your techniques, and months of preparation would be wasted.

"Each battle," Elder Wan added, "will take place within a randomly selected inner world, providing unique challenges and terrain for every match. Adaptability will be as important as raw power."

That was both good and bad news.

Fighting in different inner worlds would prevent any one participant from having a consistent home-field advantage, but it also meant we'd need to be ready for anything. Desert worlds, ocean worlds, worlds of eternal winter or blazing summer. Each environment would favor different fighting styles and techniques.

"Master," Azure commented, "this actually plays to our strengths. Your world-walking experience means you're more adaptable to foreign environments than most cultivators your age."

He was right. I'd spent months traveling between different worlds, each with their own rules and conditions. While other participants might struggle to adapt their techniques to unfamiliar terrain, I'd learned to be flexible by necessity.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed the excited look on Wei Lin's face.

Someone like him, with his marketplace method that could convert between different energy types, would also have a significant advantage over more traditional cultivators who specialized too heavily in one area.

Elder Wan's expression grew stern as he delivered his next announcement. "During the three-day preparation period, no participant is permitted to leave the sect grounds. This restriction is absolute and will be enforced."

As he spoke those words, his gaze moved across the assembled participants and seemed to linger on me for just a moment longer than the others. I felt a chill run down my spine that had nothing to do with the afternoon breeze.

"They're worried about something," Azure observed. "Probably related to the foreign energies you displayed in the Fallen Realm. Can't have their prize specimens wandering off before they figure out what makes them tick."

I suppressed a grimace.

The red and blue sun energies had definitely attracted attention, and maybe not the good kind. I'd known this was inevitable the moment the clone had used them in front of the entire sect, but knowing something was coming didn't make it any more comfortable.

The question was whether they saw me as a valuable asset to protect or a resource to exploit.

"You will have three days to rest, recover, and prepare for the individual battles," Elder Wan announced. "The medicinal pavilion is open to all participants free of charge. Use this time wisely."

That was welcome news.

Three days would give me time to properly rest, stabilize some of the new insights I'd gained from absorbing the Realm Stabilizing Tree and breaking through to Pseudo-Elemental Realm, work on my weaknesses, and definitely spend some time figuring out a game plan to defeat other top competitors like Wei Lin and Wu Kangming.

Elder Wan’s expression took on an almost paternal quality as he continued. "Some of you may be approached by elders during this interim period. If you are honored with such attention, treasure the opportunity. Guidance from those who have walked the path before you can make not just your battles easier, but your entire cultivation journey more efficient."

I found myself wondering which elders, if any, would pay me a visit. It would make sense for them to want to investigate the red and blue sun energies I'd displayed. The question was whether they'd come as teachers offering genuine guidance or interrogators seeking to extract my secrets.

I'd already allowed Elder Chen Yong to examine the blue sun energy months ago, back when I'd first started learning formation work. If other elders offered something worthwhile in return for similar examinations, I didn't see why I wouldn't cooperate.

The truth was, I couldn't resist them if the sect's leadership decided to force the issue. Civilization Realm cultivators like Sect Master Yuan operated on a level so far beyond my current abilities that resistance would be meaningless. In that case, I might as well try to get something valuable out of the exchange and maintain some semblance of control over the process.

Better to negotiate from a position of apparent cooperation than to wait for them to simply take what they wanted.

As Elder Wan prepared to dismiss us, I found my gaze drifting upward to the highest viewing platform where the sect's most senior leadership observed the proceedings. Most of the elders looked pleased with the tournament's progress, discussing the results in low voices.

But it was Sect Master Yuan who drew my attention.

The legendary Civilization Realm cultivator stood slightly apart from the others, his ageless features composed in an expression of calm observation. There was something about his posture, the way he held himself, that spoke of power so vast it didn't need to be displayed.

Then, as if sensing my attention, his gaze shifted downward and met mine directly.

The contact lasted only a moment, but it felt like an eternity.

Those ancient eyes seemed to see straight through me, cataloging every secret, every hidden technique, every carefully guarded truth. The chill that ran down my spine had nothing to do with fear or malice, it was simply the natural response my body made to being examined by a being whose power transcended my understanding.

I quickly looked away, focusing on a random point in the arena wall until the sensation of being studied faded. Whatever Sect Master Yuan had been looking for, I hoped I'd passed whatever test that momentary examination represented.

"With that," Elder Wan announced, "you are dismissed. Rest well, train wisely, and prepare yourselves for the trials ahead. The individual competition begins after three days, return here at dawn."

As the other participants began to disperse, heading toward the arena exits in small groups, I remained standing in place for a moment longer. The weight of what lay ahead was starting to sink in.

One hundred and twenty-eight cultivators. Seven rounds of elimination. Battles in unknown worlds against opponents I'd never fought before. And somewhere at the end of it all, assuming I could make it that far, likely a confrontation with Wu Kangming.

"Well," I murmured, "this should be interesting."

But first, I had to face a different kind of challenge entirely.

My parents had watched the entire Trial of the Fallen Realm through the sect's viewing arrays. They'd seen me battle wraiths and shadow phoenixes, watched me absorb a Realm Stabilizing Tree, witnessed my breakthrough to Pseudo-Elemental Realm.

They were going to have questions. Lots of questions.

And honestly, I wasn't entirely sure how to answer them.

"Well," Wei Lin said, noticing me glancing at the Core Disciple stands where my parents stood, "this should be an interesting conversation with the family."

"That's one word for it," I replied, starting toward the arena exit. "Though I'm thinking 'terrifying' might be more accurate."

"Come on," Wei Lin grinned. "How bad could it be?"

I gave him a look that clearly communicated exactly how bad I thought it could be.

After all, how do you explain to your mortal parents that their son has become something they never imagined? Something that might not even qualify as entirely human anymore?

Time to find out, I supposed.

One of the purposes of the tournament arc is to showcase the different types of inner worlds.

Comment down below your ideas, whether it be inner worlds for characters or inner worlds for battlefields!

I’ll try include some of my favorites :)

lolman Meyt

Make mc elemental realm ahead in this arc

David

Dog inner world. Just so many dogs.

lilcapt

Access in more inner worlds I hope the tree doesn't get any ideas about expansion and growth

David

Cultivates by finding new kinds of dogs to pet. Minor breakthrough happens when they realize that the concept of dog can encompass things like cows and suger gliders too.

A

A world of a gravity cultivator. The world has different gravity intensity in different parts, as well as strange gravity turbulence, that can pull you suddenly to the side...

Phoenixdrop

Oh it might be cool if we have like a elemental realm like a world made with the understanding that only with all the elements can a world truly come into existence like we would have trees made of fire that shift back to wood than water rivers that contain magma as much as water winds that you could almost climb like a mountain like every element got mixed with the properties of every other element it could result in some insane environmental combat considerations and would literally be the perfect home field for our resident merchant in fact it could probably have little bits of every affinity it would be absolutely insane heck the ground itself could be water that feels like earth wood could ripple like water you could do so much with it

Silence the Lamb

Dao of the warrior/battle. Set in constant battlefield or warring species. Notable features battling elements ex. fire and nature. Seems like a funny chaotic setting. Dao of volcano, where they are fleeing from lava as they fight. Or just everything being ready to explode. Another than would be fun is Dao of the sky. Where they stand upon clouds or are constantly falling 🤔. A metal world would be standard but unsure of how it would present to be cool. It would be interesting to see a another sword cultivator to hint at what our sword bros worlds might look like but also we will get to those eventually.

A

A magma world where they are fighting on a volcano on floating rock pieces on the lava while they are lava Geyser exploding. + Ke yin plant technique would be weaker

Caleb Gilbreath

A music realm. Where the very landscape sings. The air through the trees causes flute like noises due to their construction. The rocks whistle and the trees sing. Each creature could have sound based attacks. Birds with a cry, beasts with a roar. You could even have some sirens. The interplay of the various sounds could create unique effects. Maby some pack hunters who harmonize effects? Or an ambush pretador can lull one to sleep. The inner world could be based upon the dao of music.

LordRhyolith

Hmm, some kind of world entirely made out of floating islands (some small, some big) drifting through the skies. What keeps the islands together is a network of roots belonging to the world trees, maybe, and super unsafe-looking hanging bridges and magical stairways. There's a lot of harsh wind, and beneath the many islands rages a violent storm that rips you to shreds if you fall into it before thunder blasts what remains into ash. The natives could be various types of flying beasts like winged snakes that zap around electro style, rocs with super sharp feathers, harpies that screech around like mad Karens, etc.

Aidan Coleman

He should do a field trip to two suns soon using his 3 days. Also I do want to see him worldwalk to other worlds and get other magics and energies. Maybe some sort of utility magic or something, like divination

Bennet Sheckells

An inner world where gravity is variable, because of objects that are either black or white, with black generating gravity and white generating antigravity (aka gravity away from it) like a black and white hole. The way elements and regular objects, that don’t produce enough gravity to be noticeable, interact with such an environment would be interesting. Like dirt flowing across the realm to land in another spot, and plants that can withstand pressure and move with the dirt/water/whatever else. Thankfully, since it’s an inner world, the movements of the black and white rocks can be predetermined, allowing them to not just all clump up and actually be suspended in a void. I’ve just realized that the plants would be capable of manipulation gravity themselves in a symbiotic way, or better, in a competitive way! Like a plant strangling another’s roots, but instead of consuming all the resources in the area they move the resources away from the plant. Entire islands held together by plant systems, cracking apart in cascade failures that damage the plants making more cracks damaging more plants, with the main area being held together by… well, just regular inner world forces of ‘because I say so’. The plants would be few and far between, maybe one otherwise regular tree holding together a decently large island.

Bennet Sheckells

An infinite grey labyrinth of non-euclidian geometry that is actually a maze, where every exit leads to the same space, but depending on where you walk the ground could become the wall of ceiling, essentially one of those classic confusing stairwells. But with various areas of life and animals that take advantage of this strange gravity in order to be weightless or do something for less energy then they need to, or animals that shift the structure of the maze to make you even more lost.

DeadSlime

Celestial Sea inner world would be beautiful battlefield to fight among stars and clouds of stellar dust with entities made of cosmic energies travelling in the background.

DeadSlime

Inner world that is just one tower stretching to the heavens. It would be a good metaphor for cultivators constantly defying the heavens a Tower of Babel. Each floor could be a part of what makes up cultivation (ambition, determination, ruthlessness)

adrien

A world made entirely of crystals, each crystal shining a rainbow of colors

Anthony P.

Ice. Every where is ice. Ice, then ice, and lastly… ice! Obviously, the inner world has a subterranean society which is where the former yin cultivator drew their power. However, the competitors would only be fighting on the surface where it seems like an endless plane of glass smooth ice with a plethora of moons far above. Miles above any warmth! Oops! All Ice!

Igna7ious

Maybe a steampunk-esque world augmented by the Dao of Precision. The more imprecise your actions are the more effort and energy you have to put in for worse results. It would be the kind of location that punishes brute forcing solutions but may have some interesting energy types Or just be cheeky and send someone to a two moons world

IdolTrust

His inner world should be greatly changed because of the fishes and yiggy. Also, really check on the changes to the red, blue and baby sun. Maybe there would be a change to the baby that it could represent a power generation. A tournament inner world idea is the stillness which is very hard to use cultivation tech and makes all in the world mortals. Another idea is a world which the life mimics things around it, it would be like a battle against oneself and the enemy. Like a 1v20.

Andrew P

I'd love to see a demonic and holy ones. Elemental seem obvious, bit more esoteric concepts seem more novel.

Zeteri

I absolutely agree with the novelty of esoteric concepts

Zeteri

Something to keep in mind here though is he KNOWS there is another looper. And that looper would undoubtedly check him out if he went back. Then again, that exact reason is why he may be able to improve even quicker next time. He may not waste as much time traveling and may not have to go through the Saint stuff again... whatever did happen to that blue sun essence BTW? I'd imagine the connection is still there, would he start hijacking visions or does he need to get it back for the blue sun to send visions again?

Zeteri

Mr World Tree during the tournament "🤭🤫😉" I think the world tree will definitely have some kind of response. But inner worlds with active/alive cultivates VS the dead Death Dao realm, Starhaven realm, and assumedly dead twin sun realm will be MUCH more risky to world-walk.

Austin Gibbs

Time relam enormous clock interior that's constantly ticking out of step anomalys are preventing the function of the clock due to the death of cultivator everything is running out except time only a few clockwork warriors remain driven mad by loss have come together for one last gamble if a clocks heart can't fix the world then one of flesh will have to do...

Snoogle Bean

A purely illusory world would be cool. Literally nothing is real, and you can basically power of imagination wield the terrain

Rah

A mirror world would be cool, or mist/fog/clouds

Rah

I wonder if he’ll have links to all the worlds now

Joyeus

Black and white checkerboard world. Everything born in the world has a twin. The gimmick is it’s all about balance. A dream like world all about following threads of fate. Only when you can out plan the opponent and leave no other possibility can you land a hit. A world where power is drawn from emotional energies or memories. Positive for healing/defence, negative for attack.

Yanni

The protagonist world. Where everything even the plants think they are the chosen one, and act like it.

Alex Galaitsis

A gluttony world full of giant food and flying silverware. An opposite world, where every hostile action goes in the opposite direction intended, and has the opposite elemental affinity. A world based on messages, full of mail and pigeons.

MrrC

World of Fear where ever fear and failure comes alive and must be overcome....

Druid

If you've seen Star Trek 4, how about an accelerated evolution world? From birth to death, to birth again.

chaitanya dabbiru

I caught up dammit, I don't suppose you have a patreon version 2.0 with another hundred chapters hidden away do you?

Mo_Knowledge

This is the first chapter I've been disappointed in, for a long while. It's like 2000 words to say "7 round tournament, and awkward conversation with my parents in the next episode" Though I also didn't like the needless "last team through can only have 2 members" rule in this arc. It doesn't make sense. Like if one person is eliminated from a team, why wouldn't the 2 remaining people camp the exit points throughout the inner world. So knocking out one person really doesn't disqualify anyone. Especially if they stayed in the inner world until the end. Not to mention the Sect master knows the dao of the inner world. Why would he want the strongest people that the inner world tries to stop, from being eliminated the earliest in the first half of the tournament, through in-fighting. At least have the elders acknowledge the honorable decision of Mei Lin to leave voluntarily. It's a lesson that knowing one's limits also supports the clan's interests. I don't know it's just a bunch of plot armor to force a single team out of 300 people to make a weird decision. Like it'd make sense if it was the second half of the teams to reach an exit have to make a hard choice or fight it out. But only 1 percent of the group has to learn something from this? Weak. Spectacular story up to this arc, though. I just think this section needs a little polishing. But it's just my opinion, and I do not mean to criticize your talent for writing. It really is excellent work.

Silence the Lamb

I have a couple and I will keep them shortish, Cameo our drunken master by placing two contestants in a keg where the pressure is slowly mounting and of course possible intoxication hijinks. A beast based world.. so maybe the forest on a wooded tiger's back. or we get the living on a turtle on top of 4 elephants. you could have it be an animal dominance where they have to flee the ruler of the domain they land in while trying to fight. WEIGHTSSS! The dao of the responsible stone. Anything they break or shatter the weight of it gets placed upon their stone. You must be able to carry that which you destroy. This one is just kinda unique and I wanted to touch on how most cultivators start with a basic element Storm, With a original element of wind that incorporated flamestorms hurricanes, dust storms, water spouts. thus making the world various plants with lifecycles that flourish in one case and germinate in others. Oh also paper or library based world. dao of hoarded knowledge. origami creatures.

GloinJr

Some of the inner worlds you described sound almost like JJK domains
