It's so difficult to pass these trials I would imagine one solution is one of the two contestants ascends to the Elemental realm and no longer needs the chamber or inner sect invite.

I could understand if he knew that qi was, like it was an unweildable energy of creation, like primordial chaos, but if he knew these were inner worlds, it'd throw off the continuity

These inner worlds and the interaction with the outside world feel so surreal. On one hand the outside sect controls the realm and seems to own them to the point in which they casually use them as tournament grounds, non the other hand these inner realms have pretty hefty power level and seem like they could be pretty dangerous to the world outside of them yet no one outside of them seems to see them as potentially dangerous.

I think it's because of how they are literally lower ranked powers. They fold at the slightest hint of qi, and are lower. It takes someone on the highest rank of their power system to really do anything. It's like, how do you expect a storybook character to come out of the pages and literally kick your ass?
