It didn't occur to me on the crippling, but you're right, they don't have to kill him, they can just fuck up his spiritual foundation and permanently prevent strength recovery and then he becomes a torture doll for the Lin clan and any of his enemies they contact. They can sell him as a punching bag to every still living person he crippled or their allies who want their pound of flesh.
