First of all it is said that ancient cultivators had a higher cultivation ceiling than today, so while yes they could be more powerful it doesn't mean all of them were. Also Ke Jun was both only able to muster Qi condensation level cultivation and weakened by a stellar realm attack prior to being captured. What's really worrying is what kind of techniques did the vilain manage to get out of Ke Jun

What if the Cultivation World is slowly dying? We know that there used to be one or even more cultivation levels above the Civilization Realm. We also know that currently, those who break through to this level disappear. Perhaps the world can't support them because they're too powerful and the world is weakened, perhaps they're being expelled to something outside. Heaven could simply be the Spirit of the Inner World, which every inner world possesses. We also know that one of the continents is abandoned, destroyed, and devastated for some reason, perhaps this is some clue to the dying world. To me, the Cultivation World looks like someone's inner world, but at the same time, like a world slowly dying. It's relatively abundant for now, but it's slowly getting worse.

Interesting thought. I would be quite willing to think corruption from the blue sun, which we already know is impacting this world, could be the culprit, but the timing on when the other cultivation levels "disappeared" may not work out. It seems like something that happened long before the Sect Leader Yuan's time.
