Esil Radiru never felt at home in the demon realm’s cold marble halls. So the day the rift spat her out into a quiet Tokyo suburb, she didn’t look back. She claimed the tiny garden house at the end of the lane (sunlight streaming through glass doors, roses climbing the fence, and a single white chaise tucked beneath a cherry tree).
The neighbors called her “the transfer student who loves flowers.” They never noticed the way her crimson eyes glowed when the sprinkler mist caught the light, or how her black tank turned sheer when she “accidentally” danced through the spray, plaid skirt fluttering high on tanned thighs.
Every morning she watered the roses barefoot, violet hair loose and shimmering like spilled wine. Every afternoon she sprawled on the chaise, legs stretched long, pretending to nap while secretly watching him: the soft-spoken photographer who lived next door, always sneaking glances over the hedge with his camera half-raised.
One golden July evening, the air thick with jasmine and heat, Esil left a single crimson petal on his mailbox. Tucked beneath it: a tiny note in looping handwriting.
Garden house. Sunset. Bring your camera… and an open heart.
He came.
She was waiting on the chaise, tank clinging from the day’s heat, skirt fanned across her lap like a dare. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, painting them both in dappled gold.
“No fangs tonight,” she teased, tugging him down beside her. “Just summer.”
They kissed slow (lazy, sun-drenched kisses that tasted like cherry popsicles and stolen glances). His fingers traced the silver piercings along her ear; hers tangled in his hair. The garden hummed around them (cicadas, distant wind chimes, the soft creak of the chaise beneath shared weight).
When the sky bled from orange to indigo, Esil curled against his chest, bare feet tucked beneath his legs.
“Stay till the stars come out?” he murmured.
She smiled, crimson eyes soft. “I was never very good at leaving.”
