Warning: a tirade This gave me so much Christmas anxiety. I hate receiving presents and it doesn't help that my parents are the worst at buying presents. I have asked many, many times to not get anything, but no-one listens. I have also asked specific things, but they want to surprise me. I have asked to get something that won't last forever (food, candles etc.), but where's the fun in that? So every year I get stuff that I don't have any use for, but can't be bothered to get rid of (exercise equipment, too small clothes), things that make me do things that I don't want to do or don't have energy to do (gift cards to services I don't want to use, three mushroom growing sets that suddenly spurted a shit ton of mushrooms that I couldn't eat quickly enough) and am expected to be happy about those. I'm actually still annoyed that one year, I hinted very un-subtly that I wanted these two specific books, but instead my mum bought me this other book that was a third part of a series. So I needed to buy those two books I wanted and the first two parts of the series. I still haven't read the second and the third, because the first one was too scary and not at all something I'm interested in. I also told mum afterwards that I expected the two books I hinted about and she said she knew, but wanted to surprise me. Would it make me feel better, if I burnt those books 🤔 My grandmother used to give us money, which is nice, but it always came with "I would like to give you more, but there is so many of you grandchildren and I have such a small pension". Who wouldn't want a guilt trip for Christmas? Especially since I was self sufficient adult by that point and she needed that money more than I did. Also, if i ask not to get any presents and tell people in advance that I'm not going to buy any presents, are they allowed to tell me I'm ungrateful when they give me presents and don't get anything in return? Sorry for the rant. I have a lot of pent-up feelings since I don't want anyone to feel bad, so I just smile and thank them (and eat only mushrooms for weeks). Internally I'm Grinch and externally Mrs. Claus, making everyone's Christmas as perfect as possible 😅 Is it too late to disappear? Well, at least I don't need to cook everyone's Christmas dinner this year.

We never went rooting around for presents, and my mother hid them too well because I never found them, at least! But we did sometimes open our presents carefully, take a peek, and then tape them back up again. 😂

That first story is just sad imo, gran is clearly playing favourites here. Worst part is that the gift wasn't even meant for them in the first place, like "Yea well, sure we got everyone thoughtful gifts 'n all, but we just couldn't be arsed with you so just be f'ing grateful we recycled someone else's present!" =_=

About the first one being a punishment thing I had a similar experience. When I 13 I was struggling in Math. My grandparents sent me a clock for Christmas that had math equations for the numbers. I don’t have contact with them anymore.

I'm watching this so late and also the comment is almost entirely unrelated to the video but one of the little clipped videos of teddy bears is rabbit plushies of Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian from MDZS and I completely did not expect to see something from one of my special interests crop up in a video snippet on this channel! :D

Agree about the first one with the thoughtless and rude (or maybe purposely rude?) gift giving. But I disagree about the second one. I could be wrong, depending on the girl’s support needs, but I generally think that a 10 year old should know better than to go into their parent’s closet and start rooting around.

Oops I hit post too soon. Just adding that I do like your idea to have an honest conversation with the child about how you were excited to watch her open it on Christmas. Letting her keep it right away, though, I think would just encourage more of the same in the future.
