You asked for more John Carpenter with Kirk Russel. Well, there is a sequel to this movie called Escape from L.A.

I LOVE Escape from New York! One of my favorite Dystopian films with a great cast. Lee Van Cleef who plays Hauk was a huge Western star for the majority of his career. After this he went on to star in Action films until his death in 1989. I know him most from a TV show called "The Master". The first two episodes were riffed on a show by the name of Mystery Science Theater 3000 in Season 4 as "Master Ninja I" and episodes 3 and 4 as "Master Ninja II." Donald Pleasence drew on his own wartime experiences as a prisoner of war for his performance as the imprisoned President. He was also Dr. Sam Loomis in the Halloween franchise. Kurt Russell had starred in a bunch of Disney films before this so he pitched himself hard for the role of Snake to get a new image. It was also his idea to use the eyepatch and based his performance off Clint Eastwood. For another Dystopian film I suggest The Running Man. Totally different tone from this but it's fun!

I've wondered for years would it really be possible to turn Manhattan Island into one big prison for the country's criminals. Of course you would have to move everyone out of the city and relocate all the major financial institutions somewhere else in the country but theoretically speaking if the city was big enough could it house all the country's lawbreakers if crime got that bad?

Watching this reaction reminded me how much I love the scores and sounds of Carpenter's films. A very underappreciated aspect of his filmmaking. The sequel, Escape from LA is no where near as good as this one, and honestly one of Carpenter's weakest. But it is still worth a watch. It's the last film I can recall Russell and Carpenter did together. A couple of Carpenter suggestions, both in the horror realm. - Christine - Village of the Damned

One thing that may blow your mind about this flick: the computerized graphics for the city (rasterized lines in the briefing) are all painted minitures. No CGI, just lines on models filmed on a certain film stock with a certain lighting....and it looks like it's camera tracked in an early video game. Was trying to find a better breakdown of the VFX, the one I saw about this that blew my mind, but this is really one of the only ones that shows what I'm talking about: https://youtu.be/xwS45jpHJvs?t=226 Excuse the syfy wire video.

It's so true, the music always really stands out to us as being very fitting and unique. And thank you for the recommendations!

Carpenter is the man when it comes to saving scratch on film, second only to Cormac. Brain's girl, Carpenter's wife at the time, probably even took a pay cut only to make it up on the backend or something. Every little bit helps after all.

I love that ending sooooo much.
