Content

Brian Thompson, the CEO of the health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan on December 4th. Five days later, police arrested Luigi Mangione as a suspect in the killing at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Liv, Julian, and Travis discuss the ideological waters that Mangione swam in and how this incident proves that everyone is an online investigator. Plus we explore the reaction to the killing, which includes a surprising amount of AO3 fan fiction. Finally, we break down the popular claim that there’s a special connection between the killing and the number 286, which isn’t as impressive when closely examined.

my crank belief is that ultimately the conservative project will result in like a scorn-like eusocial biomechanical nightmare. and while I do think some kinda freaky eusociality will develop like on a long enough timescale I think the choice is whether we get to be happy or miserable but this is also probably a schizophrenia delusion so Im probably very wrong lol

After the "do you not understand what capitslism is?" I started wondering if I myself really inderstand it. Is there a "capitalism for dummies"

bigphoton

It's been my experience that all of us have a switch in us. When off we are civilized, rationale, peaceful creatures. But when pushed hard enough that switch clicks on and people are capable of anything. The amount of pressure to activate that switch varies among individuals. Some switches take a lot of pressure, some very little. Everyone has that switch, even the most timid. Among most people the switch works unconsciously: they can't activate the switch themselves. It just happens. But some, through natural ability or training ( such as soldiers, cops etc) manual control can be trained in. Looks like Luigi's switch is working.

Lain of the Wired

unforutunatly that training and conditioning makes it easier for that switch to flip unconsciously

this is one of the best episodes! funny cause I clearly remember julian’s reaction to that liberal lady saying that that guy shouldn’t have missed

Derick Gadd

Basically... is violence good? No. That's why the working class should never let the ruling class get the idea that they should go off searching for how far they can take oppression before things get violent beyond their ability to suppress it. Was the violence of the Algerian independence movement, for example, good? If one says no, why does the blame for this violence fall upon the independence movement itself, and none on the people who said "they can't beat us, so why should we worry what they do in response to this?". These movements arose and fought in response to an implicit "Bring it on". I've seen some bad lib readings of world politics suggest that this event is uniquely American because of the violence of it. No, what's uniquely American about it is how long their capitalists have been prodding the body politic, searching for where they meet resistance, and never finding it. The French don't hold on to things like 5 weeks of vacation in exchange for good behaviour and pacifism. They get it because everyone knows what happens if they try to take even half a day from that. Instant chaos from the whole of society.

Excellent episode, lovely to see people in the comments saying they’re unsubscribing. If ya can’t handle the heat of a pretty tame podcast (that I do love dearly, tbf) then see ya later! Ted K should obviously not ever be valorised. I don’t even think Luigi should necessarily be valorised. But, to quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail (of all things): “come see the violence inherent in the system!” How we continue to accept such a manifestly unjust system without meaningfully challenging its hegemonic institutions is beyond me.

IMO The real cause of this killing was the passivity of the American people. Americans have for too long let the rich and powerful get away with kicking them around, which encourages their tormentors to kick them more. It's a kind of prey/preditor situation: the more prey acts like prey, the more the preditor acts like preditor. This situation has gotten so bad that now the (some) average pisan is forced to fight back with violence. Americans should have fought back far sooner using nonviolence means, then maybe this murder wouldn't have happened.

Jordon Pat

This has to be unlocked, it's so good

Karl Childers

Mark Twain, writing on the French Revolution: "There were two 'Reigns of Terror,' if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the 'horrors' of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves."

Mental "ill" people are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. To claim that mental illness is a part of this is obscurantism and just wrong, as Mangione has not been diagnosed with any mental disorder. Sure he could be experiencing depression, but that is not the same thing as Major Depressive Disorder.

Ben Thelen

Brutalism is modernist

ROU Sentient Lichen

"The overall impact of mental illness as a factor in the violence that occurs in society as a whole appears to be overemphasized, possibly intensifying the stigma already surrounding psychiatric disorders. Violence and mental illness are not without connection, however, as they share many biologic and psychosocial aspects." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2686644/#:~:text=Steadman's%20prospective%20study9%20on,patients%20with%20comorbid%20substance%20abuse.

Julian, your opening monologue made me cry, maybe because I am still crying over the tragic reality that if Luigi had instead murdered my innocent child at his desk in school, he’d be getting a lesser charge, but still. I can't imagine my reaction if I got a letter in the post and fucking read that.

Peter Aidan Byrne

Well put. Physical, interpersonal violence is bad, but it's not *uniquely* bad, among all the other ways people can be harmed, and are harmed every day. Either we have the right to defend ourselves from harm or we don't, and if that right ends at individual violence done by non-institutional actors, then we don't, not really.

Moira

Great episode! Thank you.

Tucker Carlson doing a fucked up Christopher Alexander impression is a real bummer. You can hate shitty architecture and urban design without being a retvrn guy

Noblesse Oblahaj

I likes that he did the thing. I also liked that he read a Matty Yg book and said it was deeply stupid and ideologically vacant, or close to that

Jack Gude

Julian’s bit on being pro-violence made me think of this bit I used to do to where I’d be pro-abortion. Not pro-choice, I’m out here trying to increase the number of abortions. My gf just loves getting abortions. Sometimes she’ll wait until she’s like 8 months pregnant bc the morning sickness is worth it just to kill a baby. I live in the Midwest so I’m forced to spend a lot of time around talking farm animals.

Noblesse Oblahaj

I had someone say to me "well it's not the CEOs fault, if he didn't do it, someone else would" and it made me so mad. These systems do not function by themselves, they are not a force of nature like gravity. The purpose of a system is what it does, and what this system does is obfuscate the social murder of the many so that the few can be powerful.

I'm a basic bitch who doesn't read much but a book I did read was Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee etc. The passage that never left my brain from that book is: "THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? Justine Riekena

I know this is a really self-centred & myopic take, but I have to go to battle (again) over reimbursement for a year's worth of PT & SLPT. (Many PTs & SLPs aren't billing insurance anymore b/c they don't ever get paid.) We've hemorrhaged so much cash w/o repayment (& our insurance is far from the worst). My hope is that Luigi's act, folly or not, might lessen my fight & make the resistance to coverage just a fraction less oppositional. On the larger scale, I hope it does the same for many, many others. Maybe I am utterly naïve or blindly optimistic, but I want this act to render us some reuslts, some relief, because the suffering is real. So real & so widespread.

Daniel Reed Miller

Just to echo a couple other commenters, this episode should be unlocked for the main/public feed. It’s the best Luigi pod episode out there.

Bobby Volcano

I remembered this afternoon James Howard Kunstler went full rightwing kook a while back and so I'm baking a scenario where Tucker actually is just now getting around to reading Geography of Nowhere because someone told him Kunstler is "one of us". It's been 25 years since I read GoN but no doubt there are some explicit anticommunist vibes from Kunstler in there like classic 90's Glen Greenwald

E

Liv agar

Daniel Reed Miller

Oh yeah Kunstler, i used to love him too and followed his blog in the earlier 2000’s until it became obvious he was (for whatever dumb reason) completely homophobic and allowed comments from unhinged racists. Haven’t checked in on him in at least a decade and kinda scared to, lol. It’s a pity because GoN was so good, or at least i remember it as very smart and trenchant. And i feel it had a positive influence in the turn towards things like Yimbyism and (gasp) “15 minute cities”. Which (whole other tangent) it makes zero sense for conservative weirdos to hate since walkable cities could very plausibly be called *traditionalist*.

John Brandkamp

Wowzers. A fucking good episode.

Leyland

Great episode! I do think the reading group Luigi was a member of disbanding over reading Ted K is an interesting piece of info. Appears to be why he posted that review in the first place.

Nicholas Maher

Great ep! Julian’s lefty passion is inspiring and hilarious in equal parts

Bobby Volcano

Yeah, the New Urbanists stumbled into the idea that to be successful at getting 15 minute neighborhoods built you have to make the houses look old-timey and sell people on the retvrn aesthetic instead of "we're taking away your cars". Same here with Kunstler, yeah by now his stuff's gotta be completely insane. Actually come to think of it, maybe he's baked enough by now to be part of a special built environment QAA ep? He used to do the "eyesore of the week" of shitty buildings which is kind of what QAA is for cranks like him lol.

Artemis1312

Not even all the way through but this is some of the best leftists analysis I’ve heard yet of the killing and the reactions from the public and the elite. I’m in a very Dem/Lib area of California where to mention that violence can be politically effective is taboo, and I’ve been seeing this event wake some people up to the fact that IT IS EFFECTIVE. Clearly none of us are calling for any specific violence, but as Julian and Liv are saying (and I say to anyone around who’ll listen) this is a historical inevitability when all avenues of nonviolent reform or impact on the system(s) have been closed. No “release valve” for intolerable conditions historically results in violent reactionary and/or revolutionary acts, period. If anyone doubts these historical dynamics, I’d point you to the Revolutions podcast series by Mike Duncan for an overview and written references.

Lioness

inshallah we will all embrace allah’s light

Andew Zamora

Please take the Internet away from people... Their brains have become mush with all their searching for patterns.

Lindymizer

You say yourself that comparing Mangione to the FLN etc is false. So why bring it up? As a leftist, the question when violence is justified should maybe be discussed with less broad strokes. Eg. We all hate landlords - killing them at random will achieve exactly nothing. I understand wanting to react against ridiculous mainstream coverage but this ends up just wanting to be edgy

Cris Cosey

I kind of feel like Julian needs his own pod where he just yells and calls people idiots, and discloses tragic facts about his personal life and mental health. It can be titled, "We're So Cooked".

E Lyons

Tucker Carlson accidentally agreeing with Oscar Wilde while thinking Thomas Kinkade was a great artist probably

Bobby Volcano

Ok checked him out, most recent post was a relatively normal one about how the drones are the Biden administration preparing to disrupt the inauguration, but scroll down a couple and he's calling Black people race grifters and Tamir Rice had it coming actually, headlined with a quote from Aimee Terese goddamn

Idk if you all know this but I think the other podcast players that load RSS have stopped this episode from being played. I use YouTube music for it's RSS feature and this episode won't play anymore.

Spartacus

I'm surprised there was no discussion of the doubts that Mangione was framed? It was pretty common in my circles and seemed like something you would at least comment on

Hank

Such a haunting yet beautifully composed quote. I recently read about Engels concept of social murder and it feels like a great preface to his musings on the topic.

Hank

The crazy thing that happened after the United CEO's murder was the retraction of that policy. It goes to show that healthcare companies are reliant on the quashed spirit of the public to lay down and accept such bold robbery of their hard earned money. It genuinely sickens me that killing a CEO appears to be the only way to enact genuine reversal of such inhumane policies. However, the cynic in me understands that their announcement will merely be a temporary PR measure; they will reinstitute this, the shareholders will demand another avenue for dividends.

Hank

@Kate, Take your snarky comment and shove it up your arse. Pontificating on a brain injury diminishes the fact the US healthcare insurance industry has systematically bankrupted so many or left them in such debilitating states they can't function properly in this society. What a tone death comment.

Hank

Only other one I've seen such fervour to be unlocked was the structural antisemitism episode. It's these episodes that I feel are genuine watershed moments that some people who don't pay for patreon need to hear.

Hank

Don't let the door smack your arse on the way out.

"Go read the New York Times, fucking bitch" is the best line I've ever heard Liv say. I laughed out loud. Love the episode, glad to be a supporter

I just need you to know that a true crime podcast let me to qaa. I'm honestly not sure which is worse for my mental health at this time, but I'm so glad I'm here.

Claire Hofbauer

This might be my favorite episode ever and the one where I agree with JF the most. I think always about what pressed the population to the point of revolution in Russia and in China and its just so INEVITABLE. I love the way you described the “end of stalemate” and stuff finally happening. Because of course we aren’t going to know how the oppression is going to come to consequence, but the consequences ARE inevitable. I don’t condone violence but I don’t NOT condone violence either. I mean this dude is willing to go to jail and face the legal consequences for premeditated murder. We have legal consequences for premeditated murder because people commit premeditated murder - and usually for much stupider reasons. So I mean what can I say? I don’t know what’s going to happen. It makes me think of that scene where Christian Bale (as a 12 year old) is slapped in the face by the Chinese housekeeper in Empire of the Sun. And I guess Steven Spielberg maybe wanted the audience to feel like “aw”. But I felt like “Man I bet that felt great for her.” Society cant just keep being a massive asshole without getting fucked sometimes. I think that’s from Thunderbirds. I have no original ideas. But So yeah. Great episode. Thanks

Liv and Julian’s takes are just horrible. This whole, I’m smart, you’re dumb tankie stuff is tiring. This straw man of liberals they’ve created is cringe. Accusing others of not being able to listen to opposing opinions while bashing the NYT for not giving your opinion shows a lack of self awareness. I love this podcast, but I didn’t sign up for Chapo Trap House.

Karl Childers

go back to NYT bitch, today's headline: "Inattentive Subscriber Finally Realizes What Podcast They're Listening To"

This isn't Pod Save America. I don't understand how a regular listener of QAA can be so mystified by criticism of liberal ideology.

J M

I wasn’t criticizing their criticism of liberalism. I’m criticizing their lack of self awareness. Calling people ideologically captured while being ideologically captured is just dumb. I agree with some of the things Liv and Julian say and actually appreciate hearing opinions that differ from mine. I’ve supported QAA for years and some disagreement isn’t going to make me stop listening.

Karl Childers

incredibly funny to make this about self awareness when you have only just now noticed what podcast you're listening to

Agree entirely. Maybe this comes off as doomerish, but hand-wringing over rhe morality of what Mangione did feels like hand-wringing over the morality of a forest fire. If the ruling class wanted to avoid the consequences of climate change, they had their chance, and the same goes for avoiding the social unrest and violence of hyper-capitalist dehumanization. We're living in pure cause and effect at this point, and what Mangione did isn't any uglier than any of the rest of it. Much less so, I'd argue, since it feels like the equivalent of a wildfire that only burns down one house, where an oil company executive lives alone.

Goblet

Listen, I need Jake's Luigi takes

No Relation to Henry

They aren’t “ideologically captured.” The term doesn’t really apply to like an individual person with an ideology. The mainstream American media is ideologically captured in the sense that only certain ideologies are allowed to flourish. It limits the ideas people allow themselves to entertain, and it’s obvious some people get confused and angry when they encounter ideas outside of that range.

Spliffy

If you were looking for an in-depth, good-faith discussion of your take on here, you could have worded your original comment less prickishly.

Jose Chung

Starting to feel like class consciousness sparking any real change in America is our lefty version of the great awakening. I worry it’s equally delusional.

The fact that Luigi’s lawyer is married to Diddy’s lawyer means this circus is gonna be exhausting

This is the one pod where I find giggly, unedited rambling kind of adorable. In other pods when the hosts descend into memes/improv/anecdotes about rehab & bongs I skip forward. But if I'm listening to QAA things are already somewhat melted so 🤷

Alex Anderson

I feel like it’s liberal bait, especially if it was coming from a debate me bro who wanted to gotcha you on being some ivory tower intellectual. But Jesus man, this guy doesn’t know the difference between modernism and postmodernism. Like, do you know under what movement architecture in Russia became radically more human-centered? (Ignoring ‘incrementalist’ changes to reorient modernist apartment estates into more town-square style dwellings in Soviet states across the 80s). It starts with a p and ends ostmodernism.

Bald Weasels Scrotal Manscaping

That isn't at all what you said, your first post was that they don't listen to others' opinions. 1. Pretty sure we all have to listen to the opinions of the liberal morality police literally all of the fucking time, unless we want to listen to fascists 2. Disagreeing with a political class in fundamental ways is not the same as not listening to them, again, we have to fucking listen, liberal moralism is unavoidable Assuming you actually meant to comment about ideological capturing and weren't just shifting the goal, What the fuck are you on about. Who has ideologically captured the QAA hosts? What nation state or industry sector or political power base are they kissing the ass of? You even heard them in this literal episode saying shit that routinely gets people fired & demonetized etc. Whomst indeed are the hosts beholden to?? What shadowy entities are making them say what they're told to or implicitly conditioning them to take one side or another? Is it We, the Patreons? But wait!--you yourself are one of them, you pay them for their content and they don't give a flying fuck so again, what the fuck are you on about?

For real! And because people don’t “see” the injury, like they see a black eye or something… people tend to think people are “faking it”… sadly, they usually aren’t.

To say that mainstream media is “ideologically captured” is itself an ideology, right? I agree that Corporate Media isn’t free press in its purest sense, however most aren’t pushing ideology, just reporting events, (unless it’s an Opinion piece). Some straight up lie, like pretending a fully vetted election was “stolen”… most wont. I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but when Sesame Street is banned for “promoting left wing ideology”… it’s pretty nuts lol

Yes, calling some bits "opinion" makes the other bits seem like they're neutral. That doesn't make those parts free from ideology. And yes, everyone has an ideology, but not everyone gets cushy jobs and bonuses and pats on the head from Rupert Murdoch for saying the right thing; still fewer of us are motivated ideologically to create a whole lot of smoke and mirrors to hide their own connections to power and money. That's what capturing means. It's not a simple accusation of bias, it's an understanding that the bias of polite liberal commentators comes from their social and economic position.

Look, if I was a planning a crime like this I absolutely would build in wacko numerology stuff.

Oh for sure. If you’re very likely going to be killed or imprisoned for life by the government, you should have fun with it on your way out.

I’m not sure I’m understanding what you mean? (no offense intended) …by definition, good journalistic practice means that one checks bias or personal opinions at the door. Sure, unconscious bias exists … but it could as easily be a Conservative journalist with one lol America has been a Liberal Democracy for a long time (like Canada) as well as capitalist, especially after the Civil Rights era. News reflected that, so is that a bias? News also reflects a newer Authoritarian leaning under Trump… it’s just reflecting fact. Also people say “elites” but I have no idea what they mean. To me its someone like Elon Musk, not ordinary journalists just scrapping by. Imho an education beyond the ability to “Google search” doesn’t make one elite. So what does “elites” mean to you? 🙂

The fact that Karen Friedman Agnifilo used to run the Manhattan DA’s office means she knows how they think and that she’ll handle herself professionally.

J M My heart goes out to you, your frustration is something I certainly feel during episodes like this. I respect your willingness to stick your neck out and say it, even if it is a thankless exercise as the counter comments show.

Recently listening to old episodes of Blocked Party, I learned that my previous reply is an example of "Dutch posting" which I find very funny because I'm half Dutch. My bad

awesome ep - first listened to it while falling asleep and had horrible nightmares so only coming back to it now - and finding Julien created a wonderfully crafted ep raising great issues minus the ‘haughty reproach’ from minute 49. Got to look in the mirror every now and then - sorry Liv love you so much but whats a leftist fascist called? Or is that just youthful hubris? theres a suprisingly permeable boundary between a latvian red rifleman and a perceptive dude that you meet in the wagon wheel (as there is between a bernie supporter gone maga) . thanks travis for bringing the data…

and wtf with attacking JM? people can’t express an opinion? this comment string worries me more than any content on the pod.
