THE PLAYER (1992) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

The Player is a 1992 American satirical black comedy mystery film directed by Robert Altman and written by Michael Tolkin, based on his 1988 novel. The film stars Tim Robbins, Greta Scacchi, Fred Ward, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Gallagher, Brion James and Cynthia Stevenson, and is the story of a Hollywood film studio executive who kills an aspiring screenwriter he believes is sending him death threats. There were over 60 cameos in this film and all the actors donated their salaries to the actors fund. In reading the credits, I noticed the screenwriter Michael Tolkin played one of the brothers pitching an idea to Tim Robbins and says “let’s get out of here before he changes his mind.” I was a working actor around this time, and it was a blast to see the studios and the restaurants again. By the way, the first restaurant with Angelica Huston was The Ivy on Robertson.

That was a fantastic reaction.....and the best part is all the references and cameos you got, just from all the movies we've watched on the channel! Everything from Bogart and Casablanca to A Clockwork Orange! Sure, you couldn't get every one of them....but nobody does! PS: That's your first Robert Altman movie? Congratulations! He's one of the greats! "3 Women", oh my god, you gotta see that one! "Short Cuts" is another great one, he made that right after "The Player". He's known for big ensemble casts in films like MASH, or Nashville. But "3 Women", don't miss that one: starring Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek.....right before Shelley did The Shining, and right after Sissy did Carrie. Thanks, Coby!!!

I’ve tried a few times to find Mr. McDowell’s cameo but haven’t found it. And Altman’s follow-up Short Cuts is amazing. As close to Nashville as can be.

Oh, one bit of trivia about the movie from the DVD directors commentary track. When movie agents heard Robert Altman was doing a movie about Hollywood they were worried about how Altman would roast them. Altman handles agents by NOT MENTIONING THEM ONCE IN THE MOVIE. Also JACOBS LADDER (1990) is a fantastic Tim Robbins movie.I think it is his best performance. FUN FACT: The writer based the story on the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Loved the reaction. But as far as staying warm well-wishes…appreciated but…Brrrrrrrrrrrr. It’s rough seeing a movie set on the 72 and sunny west coast while watching from the Midwest. But that’s why God created the indoors.

This movie leaves us with some important questions that you might be able to answer as a film maker. Is the art of filmmaking as important as making a quick profit? What do you think, Coby? Interestingly, some of the greatest art of film has lived on to become some of the most profitable movies. One great example is The Godfather. The filmmakers had to fight every minute to maintain the art while business people tried to water it down. The filmmakers won and the The Godfather made history as one of the greatest films of all time. There are many other examples as well. Often, profits follow quality!

Oh. During your reaction you mentioned that your favorite movie is Paris, Texas. So I watched that for the first time yesterday. I can see why it’s your favorite…well both reasons. I’d love to see you do video reactions of movies you have seen and that you’ve loved, with a discussion of what you loved about them. I don’t know if others would be interested, I ca only speak for myself.

Also, no need to worry about the snake. No actual snakes were harmed in the making of The Player. With respect to the snake as part of the story, what exactly could Griffin have safely done without harming the Red Diamond Rattle Snake and not putting himself or any other humans at risk?
