Well this will be juicy

Andrew Fox

This is awesome. It's going to take a while for everyone to truly change their minds about him, but it's happening. Public opinion is shifting. Everything is lining up perfectly.

There are definitely some big secrets going on here that we just don't know. Looking forward to the reveal.

Ty for the chapter! 🫡

A bit worried that Cyril got to Lydia somehow off-screen and she will double-cross Lucien on the witness stand…

Doubt it will be all revealed. We will get something and later we might get to the whole truth

I'm not entirely sure I like the tempo of this trial? This is a first reaction response so caveat in that my opinion might mellow but it seems clear to me a mix of things are going on: 1) Cyril is quite evil but likely in a kind of Machiavellian, the-ends-justify-the-means type of way, not a abusive dad way. 2) Lydia is most likely a true sociopath who is being something of a chameleon and probably experimented on both children as a mad scientist causing Lucian's high mana affinity and warped morals, and his sister's muteness and stunted cognitive abilities. 3) Cyril being a man who seemingly lived against demons as an outlet in a fued with the former inquisitor, probably was something of a man on the wall keeping the plates turning of demons at bay that will collapse and cause ramifications across the world if his reputation is ruined. With all of this being plain to the reader through context clues, it boggles the mind that Lucian as a seemingly savvy man who spent the first book with an eye for detail and wits that did not fail him in high stakes scenario, who also understands he has no real knowledge of Lucian's personal life before the events of the story, would fail to pick up on this obvious reversal of fortunes that bound to unfold once Cyril goes down. It feels inconsistent with his established character and motives broadly. With that said, there are also some murky waters like the Duke's relation to Mertrand, his marrying of his daughter, shown verbal abuse of his son, and permissive attitude towards past Lucian's behavior that might complicated things.

Lucian doesn't however have much of a choice... I absolutely agree with you that Lydia is likely the same level of scum as Cyril. however that's it. She is almost certainly NOT a "mass murderer for fun" this plus the fact that's she's NOT "demon possessed" makes her at WORST "equally bad" as Cyril. Cyril is after all CLEARLY also a sociopathic pathetic bastard. emotionally broken (or nonexistent) enough to sell his own children off to Metterand (who was literally by personality everything a bad person would be defined as and Cyril knew this), he supported Metterand... hells he likely inadvertently PLAYED QUITE A BIT into the "First Inquisitors" hands as well... Cyril is BAD ENOUGH that "salvaging him" is essentially impossible at this point. He is too far gone on an emotional and personal level... and his general "public famous actions" are tainted and evil already because he after all based much of it on literal ACTUAL DEMON SUPPORT (Metterand and likely others). he could have been 'ignored' for a bit more IF he wasn't ACTIVELY HINDERING THE FIGHT AGAINST DEMONS AGAIN. This is the thing about him. NOT ONLY is Duke Cyril now broken as a man and by reputation and influence for the future fight against demons essentially irrelevant... HE DOESN'T WANT TO ACCEPT IT. He denies this to himself... He didn't react at all with REMORSE or something of the sort to the "Metterand revelation"... Cyril is narcissistic enough to not even realize how much a fucking boon to the demons probably most "successful schemes and projects" of his were ever since ending the Inquisition. I suspect Belcourt knew well the hubris and huge flaws of Cyril since then... and has been playing, using and misleading him for decades successfully... To summarize: Ideally Lucian would say something like: Lydia may be bad but you're just as evil and actively harmful to society, humanity, your family and generally EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH now more than ever, give me full control over your assets and don't interfere anymore and this can end. however this isn't something that would ever be acceptable for the Duke... he can't accept that it was HIS FAULT that landed him there entirely that he DIDN'T actually "deserve" any of his reputation and position of power... and that he's only useful as a pawn of demons currently or a puppet of Lucian faction who obediently uses his resources as directed.

Thanks for the chapter! well I'm excited to see how this will play out... Ideally in the "negotiations" Lucian would have gotten Cyril to back down accept he's a failure and an unwitting demonic collaborator (at least metterand probably more) and basically 'salvage your public image by pretending to settle but in truth letting Lucian fully take rhe reigns of everything unofficially'... That would have been ideal... However the Duke is way to narcissistic and too far gone to his delusions to ever entertain that... he'd probably rather get lost in demonic corruption than to admit "fuck everything I did sucked, was evil and served no purpose because I ended up being tricked to doing all that evil shit FOR the demons not against them"...

Logrus

Oh boy. We're about to learn that Cyril isn't that bad and Lydia is batshit insane.

Let’s see what the wife has to say

Derek Zoolander

I bet the twist is that Lydia is just a normal ass woman who is a bit materialistic and vain and it drives Cyril crazy because he has to be the invincible mastermind behind everything.
