Well this really is a new chapter

Looks like the Golemancer might have to fight the "smart dog" over the possession of Lucian's body.

Lucian: He won’t do anything unreasonable… Golemancer: I’d like to possess your body

Michael Vonica

A really great chapter. We've seen a few cases of possession so far, but I don't think we've learned all the nuances of it yet. So far, demon possession has been a rather subtle thing. It doesn't have any obvious external signs. Up until death, I suppose. I'm not so sure about what it does to a person's mind. Is the demon in control, and the person on the outside just a puppet? Is the demon just a voice and some impulses in the back of a person's mind? Or is it a shared custody situation? Metterand came up clean at the start of book one after the destruction of the treaty. That either points to demon possession being very hard to detect, or that demons can leave and come back later, without any traces. There's also the question of blessings and purified essence. If a person already has them when they come under the influence of a demon, are they lost, suppressed, or unaffected? If not lost, could the demon depossess the host temporarily, allow the host to collect more blessings and essence, and then just repossess them after? In terms of demons, the golemancer seems the least worst one to have possess you. He seems to not be malicious to humans, and his primary desire is to make golems, and further his craft. Although, who knows if this guy is really so harmless. He is a demon, so he may have killed humans before for their souls. Or maybe he's never collected human souls, or he just steals them from other demons? Anyway, assuming the golemancer isn't super evil, this might be a great deal for Lucian. He gives up his body for a few hours a day, and he gets a master craftsman to build him up a demon proof golem army. Lucian won't even need to waste his time learning golemancy, just like with alchemy. Although, Lucian might pick a thing or two up, by watching, and having his body go through the motions. This isn't even mentioning the eyes. Lucian has been begging for a mind reading ability, and he's finally gotten the opportunity. This does have me questioning Belcourt, though. That guy is a golemancer and a necromancer. But this golemancer says the method for hollowing a person has been lost. That means Belcourt didn't learn it from this demon. If so, how did Belcourt gain the power? And how did Belcourt become so strong, while also being, supposedly, crippled? One final thing. I think this is the first human Aurelia has met who has become immortal. Or just extremely long lived. She must be wondering if the same path is available to her, right?

I’m confused about how the hollowing was explained. Is it that the formless essence allows Lucian to control golems that the golemancer sensed? The part I’m stuck on is “The meat of the Hollowing… the part that enables one to control golems… all else must be stripped away from them,” but that isn’t really the case with Lucian since he can access the formless essence, right?
