I feel like Mēnē is sitting there laughing her ass off at the idea of protecting Hecate. You don't protect a wild dragon, you make sure it's trained as much as is possible, keep it well fed (and hope it remembers who was so kind to it), and then release it in the direction of your enemies. If you're lucky it goes in the direction you want. But at no time is protection involved. (Hecate is the wild dragon in this metaphor, she even breathes fire)
