So the Bad Place thought the whole thing was just a demo for Demon-Con. Kind of reminds me of the ending of Galaxy Quest.

I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but the bottom has really fallen out of the writing this season. Once they ditched the philosophy all that's left are pretty lame gags. It seems like they are just filling time until the Eleanor-Chidi situation is resolved one way or another.
