The first people from Earth to visit Jason’s astral kingdom had been a trio of government officials and the security team that came looking for them. After their experiences, they had been subject to every test that could be devised, be it magical, technological or both. There were no signs to be found of mental manipulation, pod people, shape-shifted replacements or any other scenarios that could be tested for or imagined. For many, wary of Jason’s magic, this was not enough to confirm he hadn’t done something to them.

The main reason doubts persisted was the attitudes of those who had entered Jason’s realm. While the specifics varied, each one held some variation on the same positions. Their explanations of what lay on the other side of Jason’s portal sounded absurd. Whole planets, godlike power. Whatever Jason Asano might want from Earth, he had no need of it.

A more formalised expedition into the astral kingdom was arranged. Compared to the previous impromptu visit, this one had representatives from across the globe. Intelligence officers were accompanied by geologists, biologists, anthropologists and anyone else with some potential insight and a security clearance. Jason left the group to the Concierge to guide, as he had the last. While that was going on, Jason was walking with his soul realm’s longest-serving resident, from a time before it even was an astral kingdom.

Melody Jain, Sophie’s mother, was in recovery after a surgery to remove the substance that had been influencing her mind for decades. It had robbed her of her autonomy and of her family. The process of removing it had been a savage trauma that only Jason’s control over his realm allowed her to survive. After a lengthy coma, she was back on her feet. She used them now to make her way through the tree city of Arbour, with Jason strolling beside her.

Melody, like Sophie, was a beautiful, silver-haired celestine. Although she had physically aged no more than her daughter, there was a weariness to her that spoke to the hard years she had lived. She wore a simple linen shirt and pants and wandered barefoot, unconcerned about the scattered leaves and dirt over the stone streets and pathways. Jason was similarly garbed, the natural colours of his clothing a contrast to his usual garishness.

The metropolis was a living forest, but with open thoroughfares, and buildings of wood and stone that blended into the surrounds. In place of underbrush were wide boulevards, dappled with light filtering in through the canopy. Small gusts of wind swept up fallen leaves and carried them away in swirling dervishes, dancing like street performers. Roads and pathways of hewn stone meandered around trees and buildings.

Above them, buildings were anchored to gargantuan trees, connected by hanging bridges and stairways that wound around the trunks. There was even a wooden track for a light rail system that snaked through the upper reaches of the trees.

Natural scents floated on the breeze; grass, wildflowers and earth. Jason took a deep breath and sighed happily.

“I’m very happy with how this turned out,” he said. “I understand how you might want to escape after being here so long, though. I’m sorry it worked out that we are on Earth and not Pallimustus, now you’re finally able to leave.”

“I shouldn’t complain too much. Not many get to explore an entirely different world. Nothing new to you, I suppose.”

“It still feels fresh,” Jason said. “There’s always a new horizon. Once things have settled, we’ll get you out and about.”

“Sophie has been so excited about travelling together,” Melody said. “It’s almost like I’ve got the little girl back I never got to see her as. Maybe she feels it too. But I’m in no rush. This is a big world too, and it’s been my home longer than anywhere else. It was haunting, at first. This huge, empty place, waiting for people who never came. And it keeps changing. The world, and this city, especially. Growing, like a garden. Only in the last year or so has it really settled down.”

“People will come,” Jason said. “You’ve seen New Water.”

“Why didn’t you bring those people from Pallimustus to the tree city? You made them a new one instead.”

“A couple of reasons. One was that I wanted them to be somewhere familiar. I couldn’t recreate their city, but I wanted it to at least feel like what they knew. Another was that this place is earmarked for others.”

“Oh?”

“With normal astral kings, the ones who were originally messengers, things work the same way for all of them. Those of us who become astral kings through less conventional means find that we each have little quirks we need to figure out.”

“If you say so. I’m not well-versed on any of this.”

“Neither am I, to be honest. I find myself in a learn-by-doing situation. For example, normal astral kings create an astral kingdom, much like this one.”

He gestured at the space around them.

“So far, so good, then.”

He chuckled.

“Yeah,” he said. “Now, when it comes to populating their astral kingdoms, that’s when the normal processes get a little wobbly. An astral kingdom creates special trees, but they won’t grow beyond saplings. They have to be transplanted, out into broader reality. The birthing worlds, where messengers grow more messengers. Like fruit, to be harvested.”

“Harvested?”

“Astral kings create messengers for two reasons. One is to have an army of compliant minions, and the other is to drain them for power.”

“It doesn’t work like that for you?”

“Not the growing part. I’m not sure about the building power part, but I’m not going to juice people and drink it.”

“Can you get power without doing that?”

“I don’t know. I’m unsure how much of the difference between myself and other astral kings is my not being a messenger. I suspect that many of the changes come from this city having its own soul. It began life as a warped version of a birthing tree, after all. It’s already working differently. Extensions of it are growing across the planet. Not saplings, or even full-grown trees, but entire forests.”

“The city has an avatar form, does it not? Have you asked it about this?”

“I have. Like me, Arbour is finding their way through what is happening to them, learning as they go.”

“And you think that these forests will grow new messengers? Here in your soul realm?”

“It’s happening already. These forests, they’re full of… pods. Sooner or later, messengers are going to start popping out like peas.”

“Are you ready for that?”

Jason’s laugh had a tinge of panicked mania.

“For an army of ten-foot-tall newborns with silver-rank power and wings? No, I am not ready for that. I’m still stumbling through being a parent to one adult.”

“How are things with Nik?”

“Good. I think. Kind of. He just met his extended family. Magic and circumstance kept us apart for so long, and we’re still feeling our way through. You know what that’s like, so I was hoping you had tips.”

“Mostly a list of mistakes.”

“I’ll take it.”

They strolled through the city, discussing what it was to be an unconventional parent in very unusual circumstances. In their wanderings, they encountered many of the tree city’s unusual aspects. Natural and magical forces came together to shape the city, defining the oddities of its geography.

Arbour was located in the vast caldera of a volcanic mountain range, in the icy north of the planet. Geothermal heat and ambient magic conditions created a temperate zone, hidden away in the mountains. There were massive underground districts, deeper even than the root systems of the massive trees. These included access to huge magma chambers that were half constructed brick, half natural cavern. Magic set into the stone made the heat bearable and the air breathable. The stone was warm, but not hot under their bare feet.

“It’s beautiful, but quite ominous,” Melody said as the crossed a stone bridge that spanned over a flowing river of magma. “All this dark stone and fire.”

The light of the molten stone painted everything red. While Jason enjoyed feeling like a video game dwarf, he led them back towards the surface. He aimed for a place that was his favourite in the city, possibly in the entire astral kingdom.

A massive gorge marked the city like a scar. The sheer sides were draped with trees like tapestries, houses of wood and stone poking out through the leaves. The river running through the city erupted over the clifftop, the deluge filling the gorge with mist as it cascaded down and into the cave systems below.

The buildings set into the side of the gorge were part treehouse and part volcanic stone, no two quite the same. Some hugged the walls, with tunnels carefully avoiding root systems as they wound through the rock. Others had wooden platforms jutting into the gorge, shrouded in cool, refreshing mist. Hanging bridges spanned the gap in places, connecting buildings on one side to the other.

In the depths of the gorge, the falling water filtered into a cave system of interconnected grottos. The grotto water was impossibly clear, courtesy of magical filters, and submerged crystals lit up the caverns with shimmering teals, blue and greens. Catwalks gave easy access to the cave system, where artificial chambers had been carved out to make communal spaces.

These areas were subterranean gardens, luminescent plants growing out of the walls. There were playgrounds and picnic tables, and public barbecues set up under well-hidden and carefully placed smoke vents. A fresh breeze blew through the cave system, taking the edge off the warmth of geothermal rock.

“This is one of my favourite spots,” Jason said, joyfully playing tour guide. They were in a water-filled grotto, on a wooden catwalk set into the wall. He pointed out places where kids — or childish adults — could jump into the water, and then get back out to one of the picnic areas. The whole chamber was awash with cerulean light, shining from the water. It gave the whole chamber a sense of being underwater.

“There are animals in there as well,” he pointed out. “You can swim with fish and turtles.”

They emerged from the grotto caves at the bottom of the gorge. It would be easy to fly upwards, but they took stairs carved directly into the stone, zigzagging up the walls. It was an indirect and inefficient path, weaving between trees and houses. Sometimes the path took them into tunnels briefly, before returning outside. The sun was high in the sky, its light painting rainbows in the mist from the waterfall. Droplets of spray sparkled like diamonds as they tumbled into the depths of the gorge.

“It doesn’t seem like a wildly practical space,” Melody pointed out.

“There’s always flying,” Jason said. “This is designed as a residential space for high-rankers. There are more efficient thoroughfares carved into the rock, though, behind the houses and past the roots of the trees. Direct tunnels, elevating platforms. There’s a large transit station behind the waterfall. It’s one of several hubs around the city, mostly underground to avoid interfering with the trees. I do have a wooden train that can run above ground in some areas, although that’s also more about the experience than pure practicality. You’ve seen the tracks, I’m sure, but I haven’t fired up the train yet.”

When Jason had met Melody, she had been sharp, fanatical and brainwashed. He could never have imagined then the motherly smile she gave him now.

“Look at you,” she said. “It turns out that the all-powerful god of this world is really just a boy playing with toys.”

He grinned.

“I can live with that.”

They reached one of the larger houses, featuring a large deck, supported by multiple trees. It was close enough to the waterfall to have a refreshing coolness to the air, but not so close to be painted wet by the spray. There were three barbecues, and a pair of picnic tables that could host a large gathering. Hanging from a branch was a porch swing, from which a visibly nervous leonid stood up as they approached.

“My next appointment,” Jason said. “Would you like me to portal you home?”

Melody lived in a treehouse, built around one of the tallest redwoods in the city. It was close to where Carlos had been set up with his research centre, and Melody’s fellow brainwashing victims.

“I think I’ll walk,” she said. “Even after all these years, there’s still so much I’ve never seen.”

She wandered off and Jason walked over to Gary. The young man wasn’t large by leonid standards, half a head shorter than Taika. Even so, he loomed over Jason, making his timid body language somewhat comical. Jason gestured at the porch swing Gary had just vacated, then sat. After a moment, Gary did the same. Jason didn’t rush to speak, giving Gary time to work up the courage. Instead, he took in the view with a contented sigh.

“I…” Gary attempted before trailing off.

“You don’t know what it’s like, sitting here,” Gary said.

“I am sitting here,” Jason pointed out.

“Yeah, but you’re sitting here with me. I’m sitting here with you.”

Rather than respond, Jason gave Gary time to gather his thoughts and continue.

“I’ve been surrounded by your power my whole life,” Gary explained. “The ground I walked on, the sun in the sky. It was always there, underpinning everything, but I never realised it. It was just the way things were. It was only when I left that I realised it, by its absence. Like some fundamental part of the world was missing. We’re in another universe here, but it feels more like home than Australia.”

“I’m sorry you haven’t had the chance to expand your horizons.”

“That’s not… you’re a person.”

“I like to think so,” Jason said.

“I’m not explaining this well. Mr Asano, after leaving the clan’s territory, I suddenly find myself very aware of the power that has been around me my entire life. It feels like home. The place I belong. And then there’s you. A person, radiating all of that power. The source of it. I can feel it coming off you like a wellspring.”

“It’s just an aura.”

“No, it’s not. I’ve felt auras. Strong, well-trained, gold-rank auras. Being here isn’t like sitting next to Mr Williams, or Mr Remore. It’s like sitting next to God.”

Jason let out a sigh.

“Is that why you asked to see me, Gary? You think I’m God?”

“No. I know what you are. Emi explained it to me. But that’s what it feels like. And, since this is as close as I’m every likely to get, I was hoping you might be able to answer a question that I’ve had for a long time.”

“And what’s that?”

“Why am I different?”

“Everyone’s different, Gary, to one degree or another. You’ll have to be more specific.”

Gary nodded.

“People treat me differently,” he said. “Not always, and not everyone, but some people. Mr Remore has always been there, helping me and guiding me. Not many get that kind of attention. At first I thought it was because I was the first natural born leonid, but there are others like me. Kids of the transformed. They didn’t get that much attention. And the way he looks at me sometimes, it’s like he’s seeing someone else.”

“Not seeing someone else. Just remembering.”

“The other Gary? The one I was named after?”

“Yes.”

“Do I look like him?”

“No,” Jason said, then waved his arm.

A scene appeared in front of them, of people gathered on a grassy area, overlooking a tropical lagoon. Gary recognised Jason, Rufus and many others he had met in the last week. His eyes, however, were drawn to a towering leonid in front of a grill. The man was holding a set of tongs, and wore an apron that read ‘adventuring is more fun when you eat the bad guy.’ It was in one of the Pallimustus languages Rufus taught.

The image was silent, but as the man threw back his head in laughter, Gary could almost hear the booming sound of it. He wasn’t sure how long he sat, transfixed, watching the man silently talk and laugh and eat the entire roasted leg of some giant bird-like creature. Gary was startled when the image vanished.

Once again, Jason waited until Gary finally broke the silence.

“Before I was born, Mr Remore used to tell stories about him. That’s why my parents named me after him. But he doesn’t tell those stories anymore. Not ever, even when I asked. Do you know why?”

“I do.”

“I thought that maybe I was imagining things. Maybe it was because I was a leonid that Mr Remore gave me so much attention. Why your family included me in so many things. Gave me so many opportunities. I know the clan wants to be more inclusive. To not make it about just your family. But then I said that I wanted to see you. To talk to you, and three hours later, here I am. There are people who run countries who can’t do that. I’m different, and I don’t know why. Can you tell me?”

Jason let out a long, slow breath.

“Yes, Gary. I can.”

Nice chapter, but I’m wanting more Zara flirting and banter. Happy Jason doing his thing with the ladies is one of the best parts of the story

Bingus McCready

Oh, god, this is gonna crush me isn’t it? TFTC!

Lizy Flore

It is me or the chapters are dropping earlier and earlier ? I’m not complaining. Just wanted to know if it was a matter of where or of when. Like, where I am, I’m used to have them only at 1am. But recently it’s been midnight. Now it’s 11pm. Is there a specific reason ? Or only Shirtaloon to thank ?

Lochar

Timezones. Your timezone shifted, Shirt's shifted. I'm in the US and it'll shift for me after this weekend.

bryan ortiz

I'm glad Melody and Arbour are finding their places. Exciting! And new messenger birthing tree? Nice! Now... Friday of course... what will Jason tell Gary!?!? 🤔 gosh these cliffhangers are annoying, but so awesome.

badw0lf

i am now finding myself wanting to make a batch of biscuits.... I both love and loathe you. :P

JonO

Oh damn I thought I was done crying for a while. I'm concerned about the ramifications this conversation will hold, but I also want Gary 2.0 to know. Ugh

Jason Markus

Boy that Gary conversation hit me right in the feelings.

Unwillingmainer

I can't remember, did the guy from the Reaper say not to tell the reincarnated souls what they are? I know he said that having them reincarnate where people who knew them can find them was a bent rule in this case, but not if you can tell them. If you can, I feel like Jason is the worst person to do it. But I don't think Rufus or Farah are any better. In funnier ideas, I wonder if those scientists on the Jason expedition are going to find out just how little his understanding of stuff goes. Like, are microscopes going to show cells with 80 action hero faces on them? Are they going to scratch their heads when the laws of physics work like someone with a high school diploma understands them? I don't think Jason will fuck with them much, he wants people to get it, but still, he doesn't really know much about how natural laws work.

Jarrett Glass

Time changes in Australia. Pretty mundane sadly, but I am grateful for it happening!

Daniel Wills

I don’t think Vellius said they couldn’t tell Gary? Just dire ramifications of trying to make Gary be oldGary, iirc. Could be wrong

DrRoq

You're going to make us cry next chapter aren't you Travis. And you are making us wait 2 days to do it. This is going to be painful

Biscuits!

Skchoad

I'm kind of speechless here. I can't even point out why, but I am incredibly impressed with this segment. Amazing ability to craft your world and narrative. Thank you for being you and making this story.

Dalth

If I remember right, it was more Velius telling Rufus to not try to mold him into his previous friend. That his friend was gone, and even if there are echoes in the New Gary, it’s not him, and to not try to make New Gary into Old Gary.

JonO

Yeah but just talking about it could lead that way. That's what I'm concerned about. Also what if it breaks Gary? I'm too invested in this Gary to experience a breaking of that sort, but I'd also like to see him have a greater understanding or appreciation of who he is and to become better for it. So I'm literally just on the edge of my seat expecting the best and the worst at once.

Memories of Gary 🥲

Soli116

The first time Jason met Melody, the system (small S at that time) called her [Order of the Reaper Infiltrator - Suppressed]. I'm still worried about that.

Alexander Dupree

I’m just gonna sit here all awkward and not know what to do or say because HOLY BALLS that’s quite the conversation to have.

Jon Stanfield

I've been wondering about Gary and his place in the story. I was really scared, even after the warnings from Velius, that he would just get turned into Gary 2.0 rather than a character in his own right. Very much looking forward to hearing more about him. TYFTC!!!!!!

Jon Stanfield

She's from the order of the reaper, but she infiltrated the order of redeeming light, only to be suppressed by the ritual of purification or whatever they use

Brave Badger

Uh oh Shade’s dads friend Velius will be pissed

Samuel Strode

Hey Hawaiian shirts are not garish they are business wear in Hawaii…

Alicia Bolick

Is Jason allowed to tell Gary? I thought the Reaper wanted this kept pretty quiet. Information like this could greatly impact a young kid.

David Cooper

Aw, shit, Jason, don't do it.

Steve B

Is Clive's wife somewhere in Jason's universe?

Samuel Strode

Biscuit? Is that like half a biscuit? Or no it’s a shortbread biscuit with some nice jam or some clotted cream oh yea I could go for some nice clotted cream or a Devonshire cream with just a touch of Grand Marnier although I prefer that on a scone… I am sure the shortbread biscuit “biscut” will still be good. I need some now 😉

Arieh Sochaczevski

I suspect those pods will make more Nik-people. I know Jason named them, but I CBB’d to hunt it down. Also, not first. You need to reload to see comments made after you open the post.

Alex

Velius told Rufus to respect the fact that new Gary and old Gary are not the same person, and that he would execute Rufus if he tried to turn the new Gary into the old one; new Gary is not the same person as old Gary, and it's wrong to treat him as such. Whether it's right or wrong for Jason to tell Gary that he's reincarnated really comes down to whether Gary's sense of self is robust enough to handle the idea that his soul was a gift from another person. I don't think there's a right answer here. I don't expect Velius to intervene if all Jason is does is tell Gary the truth, but it'll be a difficult thing for Gary to come to terms with for sure.

Namorat

Will he convince him that not knowing is better for him?

Kyle Hunter

This is a tightrope Jason's walking. Does he help the soul of his dead friend or piss off the Reaper?

Arieh Sochaczevski

… I didn’t expect to care, but I am very much invested in the RSS Jason/Dawn. I think it’s unfair of him to play with Zara - or any mortal - at this point. Maybe if he had realistic expectations of her reaching immortality there could be some excuse, but he couldn’t possibly be that confident.

Aaron Schwartz

I’ve always felt that Sophie‘s mother‘s character has been badly mishandled. Frankly, I used to think that about Sophie too. She was my favorite character in the first three books, beside Jason. And then when he got back, almost everything about her that I found interesting was gone. Overtime I’ve managed to accept that she had count character development during the intervening years and we didn’t get to see them, AND THAT WAS THE POINT. At least from Jason’s perspective. So I managed to get over it. But her mother…. I was so looking forward to interactions with her. I absolutely love the fight where she was introduced and her dynamic with Jason and Humphrey. When we finally find out what her deal is, she’s so interesting but they just sort of drop her in a hole. It made sense because she’s literally unable to have any development until her curse is removed. Then they have that amazing scene where Jason exploits her cognitive dissonance to essentially dare her to run into his god realm, which I THOUGHT WAS AMAZING. I was so psyched to interact with the REAL her, after that but then it just says “ Sophie went in to talk to her mother” and we don’t get to see any of it. Then she goes back to her hole and she only gets trotted out occasionally to make one or two lines of dialogue, and they’re not even usually with the people I want to see her interact with. She’s talking with Jason ABOUT the interactions I want to see. Hell since she got dropped in that hole, we haven’t even interacted with her creepy, semi stalker from Rufus‘s dad‘s team, And we’ve known him since book two. I didn’t even like him that much, but I just feel it’s such a waste to put two of your most interesting character concepts on a bus and just tell them to fuck off out of the narrative.

Iain Grubb

...Gary I am your father

Soli116

She was infiltrating for the Cult. Order are the political branch that the priests took out. Eta: Calum is part of the Cult of the Reaper.

Samuel Strode

I have another author I follow Monday and Thursday only and less than 20 chapters….

Azmoranth

😭😭😭😭😭

Daniel Wills

I don’t think it will break newGary, and really there was no way to avoid this. It’s really the Reaper’s fault for letting Gary’s soul be in a place where so many people new Gary. New Gary getting all sorts of special treatment seems weird. The clan shouldn’t know why he’s special. It should be just Farrah, Rufus, and Jason that know. I think the bigger issue is how many people are learning that reincarnation is an “option” after death.

Erlost

You didn’t cry at the end of this chapter? Well, yeah, me neither….

Kathryn Lemay

I think Gary might be almost 20 or close by now? Maybe? Idk about the math. I think Jason might be allowed to tell cause he is in his realm? No other astral being can see him. Maybe Jason talked with the Dr. V (the reapers prime vessel)?

David Cooper

Melody is going to have to heal up fast; Sophie won't put up with her remaining silver rank. She's going to want her mother longer than that, having missed so much time.

Demi

If there's one "person" you're going to believe when they say you are your own person and not the v2 of your reincarnated soul, it's gotta be the guy you consider your God. In other words, I can see why it's Jason Gary's having this conversation with.

ABTelford

Holy cliff hanger balls, you can’t leave it there!!!! NOoooo!!!!……. 😭😮‍💨…😅😘. Shirtaloon, I LOVED this chapter! The descriptions were beautiful and the conversations “real”. I can tell this was a piece of your soul you put down into words for us. Thank you. [P.S. ignore the pricks who’ll inevitably complain about it.]

FlareNight

I had to go look it up, but "you are the reincarnated Gary, but you're not actually Gary and should be your own person, and don't spread this around" doesn't break what Velius told Rufus, so long as they mean it.

Laura Hemly

Thanks for an amazing chapter,Shirt! Your description of Arbour was so vivid I'd find a way to move there no matter what it took if I could! Just SO beautiful... I adore big trees, and living amongst them, or on a cliff wall in a big canyon by a waterfall would be just HEAVEN. And someone here in the comments suggested that Jason's birthing trees would grow more of Nik's rabbit race, which I think would be the perfect solution to Nik being currently the only one. So keep it in mind! Last, I have ZERO idea how Jason's conversation with Gary will go, so I'm not even going to guess. I can see potential pitfall but also potential benefits either way, so I'm just going to wait and see. I don't envy you having to write it no matter how it goes!

Preston Stokes

What a loss! I miss Gary. He's a special kid to be such a big part now.

Fire Bucket

In the pods. He's not growing Messengers, he's growing an army of Clive's Wives.

Demi

At this point, it hurts Gary more if they don't come clean. The boy is half way there himself already.

ABTelford

Omg now I want Jason’s trees to birth rabbit people! 🤩

Michael Deleon

I was waiting for this moment but also dreading it. Thank you for reminding me about the friend we all lost.

ABTelford

Hahahaha!!! Your comment made me snort a loud surprised laugh! 😂. But, just to be clear, I do not want that to happen. But still…😂😂😂

Laura Hemly

I know, right? I'm going to be disappointed if they just grow messengers!

ABTelford

Maybe you could write some fanfic and run it past Shirtaloon?

Buck

That is going to be one HEAVY conversation between Gary and Jason!

Aaron Schwartz

I don’t know if if he’s allowed. But shade wouldn’t know all of the ins and outs of the afterlife and since he’s not a shadow of the reaper anymore, he’s not bound by his nature to keep that knowledge a secret. I’m betting he still will out of courtesy but he definitely knows enough to understand what Gary is and I’m betting he told Jason. Especially since I think Jason is good enough with aura to recognize the bits and pieces of the original soul when he felt the kids aura.

Jordan Rogers

Rufus wasn’t allowed, who commands he who sitteth on the throne? 😂 But in all seriousness it’s different cause he isn’t a kid anymore and he’s come up questioning things(discovering it himself)

Gotrek65

Oh for the love of Biscuits! The ending, I need more!😭

FlareNight

The issue isn't that he's so and so reincarnated but that the people around him might try to make him into the other Gary. They have to treat him as a different person, but the conversation with Velius seems pretty clear that it wasn't a secret that could be kept and the Reaper had decided it was worth it to repay the debt they owe Jason.

Gotrek65

I really hope Jason does mess up Gary and Death/The Reaper get involved.

Joe Foreman

That is the meanest cliffhanger you have done to us in a while Shirt. Why? just why would you do that on that ending.

David White

I think if it's framed more like Gary is his "spiritual" father - similar to but distinct from. If Jason and co treat young Gary as the child of a great friend it should work out, hopefully, and something young Gary won't get an identity crisis over

Big I

Whatever you do Jason, don't say "You're a wizard Gary"

Darren Williams

I hope the Reaper doesn't get angry at Jason for this upcoming conversation.

Darkhaze

I don't see this ending well.

Dalth

It’s gonna birth bad 80s comic heroes. To be unleashed upon the universe. Just saying. But yes to the rabbit people.

Teddy Torres

I wish shirt would have just left it at the conversation with Velius and Rufus. At this point it feels like he's forcing Gary on us. He lived and died beautifully and it doesn't feel like he's honoring Gary anymore. Idk. I love this series so much I can't explain it but the more new Gary just shoved on us the more hurt I am at Gary's loss and sacrifice

Louie Lewis

This is kinda sad, nice though

Jamarr

I know Jason wasn't there for that conversation but didn't the Reaper's former avatar explicitly say it was a bad idea to do what Jason's about to?

James Rosado

The Reaper can get mad all it wants. I think that it'll let Jason slide though after he let the Reaper and the World Phoenix go from his soul without harm

Kaelan Spears

If it works like I think it does, Vesta Carmis Zell knocked up Jason 🤣

Alex Schellenberg

I don't think this will draw the Reapers attention because Jason is so terrible at explaining things.

Stuart Thwaites

What's the Reaper gonna do? Jason doesn't fall under his area of Authority (capital A intended)

Alex Schellenberg

He will probably explain it with references that will go over Gary's head and leave him more confused.

Kyle Hunter

But the Reaper isn't the end all be all he uses to. The Throne is enforcing rules now when GABs infringe on each other's Authority. No more Builder bullshit

Leonardo Krieck

In a pod inside one of the forests of arbor. Bet some of them will know somethings Jason know and one is step up. Kkk

Kevari

This is gonna get complicated

IllustriousIllusionist

I feel like Jason will say “yes I can tell you, no I won’t tell you.”

Keegan Moss

Yea because our daylight savings time starts and ends different than his, there are 4 hour time shifts through the year. So after this weekend, will be the earliest you’ll be getting the chapters

John

Dude. How tall is Taika??

Tim

The same way you do with anything, you tell them the truth and let them come to their own balance

Tim

Tree village for the Rabbit People and messengers?

Mike G.

> “Yeah, but you’re sitting here with me. I’m sitting here with you.” LOL... Even though Gary already met him, that almost needed a "You're Jason Asano!" to go with it :) Good chapter, thanks!

Frosty

He does what he always does: The best he can with what he has and depend on his friends to be there when he needs them (in this case, Shade).

Hemlock

I'm wondering if the rabbit people won't end up being Jason's version of messengers once they start popping out.

Numbzy

Oh god. I'm still crying over Gary's death. It was both undeserved and uncalled for! No one deresvered to live more! Gary is the hero Jason wished he was!

Aaron

It makes sense. Even though you try to not to you will show favouritism towards someone you know holds the soul of your dead best friend, and that person will notice that and want to understand why they are being treated differently.

Justin

I’m not a very emotional person but every now and then you write a chapter or even a line that just hits right. This is one of those chapters. TYFTC! Keep up the great work and I hope you enjoy writing this as much as I enjoy reading it Shirt!

Teddy Torres

I understand from a narrative standpoint. I just don't understand why shirt did it to begin with.

Justin Butler

They're Breaking Rules! Uh-oh

Forrest

Man, this chapter made me sad.

Larry Rohdes

Thanks Shirt! Awesome chapters! We are glad that this wasn't the last chapter of November and then have to wait until Christmas break is over to find out what Jason says... that would have been truly diabolical...

Daniel is ŁØNE

Reaper can stuff it, Jason tried to help a war he really had no business being part of and it repaid him by trying to violate his soul when he thought they might lose. If Shade wasn't pretty much the reapers kid I'd have had absolutely no issues with Jason taking a cosmic bite of the Reaper

Joanna

Thanks for looking it up for us, I was thinking I'd need to do that myself. But yeah, that was my thought too. It's not that he can't ever know, it's that you can't try and turn him into the person he got his soul from. So hopefully things will go okay with the rest of this convo

FlareNight

It's chapter 77 of Book 11. "The line is that you must always treat the boy as who he is, not who he was. And if I ever catch you trying to turn him into your lost friend, then no one can save you from me." Jason might be the exception to that last bit, but he'd be a GAB for that argument, and I don't know that he can trade authority the way he'd need to.

Joanna

Jason definitely doesn't believe that in general, so it'd be a hard sell. I doubt the conversation is going to go that way

FlareNight

No. Ch 77 of 11 "The line is that you must always treat the boy as who he is, not who he was. And if I ever catch you trying to turn him into your lost friend, then no one can save you from me." Telling him sounded inevitable from how Velius talked about it.

Adrian

I love where youre going with this. Tell me more...

Sean Sheldon

Please don't fuck this up, Jason...

deadly chibi

Is Jason about to call it a favor as the system

Aubrey Listi

I'm sure Jason would agree. But it is easier to remember all the good and forget the bad when they are gone. Gary was a big man, and had a bigger heart. But he also had his short comings. This is a hard chapter for a lot of people, myself included. I think it's best to remember Gary as he was, and not use his extraordinary brilliant light to put others down. Gary wouldn't have wanted that.

Adrian

Well, if there's anyone who can tell death to go pound sand ... its kind of too late to pretend its just imagination. Jason has to provide some explanation. Should be interesting to see if he can manage it without Voltron, Airwolf, or Knight Rider being mentioned, tho...

IllustriousIllusionist

I think it would be possible tbh. Hes a lot more wise than he was when he was younger and he knows that he shouldn’t tell Gary that truth. If nothing else I like to think k Shade would be very much so against it regardless of if his loyalties as a shadow changed

BloodStorm

I can’t wait for the 5pm EST chapter drop next week

Alex

I'm not suggesting Velius would suddenly appear in Jason's Astral Kingdom and stop him from telling Gary, I'm saying it's possible he'll decide to punish Jason later on if he finds out about it. Which he will, because his boss is one of the supreme overlords of all creation.

StarkRG

The Reaper (or, at least, Vellius) is gonna be *pissed.* It's mostly Rufus' fault, though, he wasn't supposed to treat Gary any differently but, of course, he couldn't help it. I doubt many people would.

StarkRG

He's already got a normal messenger birthing tree in Rexion's sealed-away astral space. So I do hope that the pods are full of rabbit folk.

StarkRG

I don't think it's ever been said with numbers, only comparisons, but I picture him as about 2m tall about 6'7"), or maybe a little more.

John

That’s what I was thinking. That puts Jason around 5’8” and young Gary at about 6’3”

StarkRG

"So it's a bit like that Knight Rider reboot, at least before the magitech bullshit in the last season, but, instead of the ghost of David Hasselhoff, it's the reforged soul of a hero and, instead of a car, it's you. Does that make sense?" "Annoyingly, it does."

StarkRG

I think Vellius is going to be pissed off, but I think Jason's gonna tell Gary in a way that Vellius is going to reluctantly approve of.

FlareNight

Velius was explicit that Rufus could treat him differently and that both he and others around him wouldn't be able to avoid it. It's trying to move the soul backward, toward the original Gary, that's not allowed.

StarkRG

I could have sworn he said *don't* treat him differently, but the threat of hunting Rufus down was only of he tried to turn him into old Gary.

Carl Gherardi

A planet full of fluffy bunnies whose genetic memory forces them to make censored 80s action hero quips. Jason? Are you the one with evil powers?

John Haseltine

How hard is it to say, You are the reincarnation of THAT Gary, this is why everyone that knew him treat you differently. But we both know that Jason won't say it as eloquently or to the point.

Nivyn

We have to remember Gary chose to be the hero, that he truly was and honor his memory for it, to do less is a disservice to him.

DeviantSalivations

Can we please just. . . not... Here. Let this be a magical place for us to enjoy a good story without outside reminders of things.

Anthony Sebastian

Despite having sanctioned himself into a Shadow of the Hegemon, I reckon Shade would have cautioned against or outright stopped Jason from crossing any lines he's not supposed to.

Scott Way

"Shade, can you help me explain. I don't want to go pissing off your dad by explaining this poorly." I can imagine a varience of that conversation taking place somewhere at the same time.

dakota dodson

Next chapter is gonna be heavy bro 😭

FlareNight

It was "we normally make sure you don't meet the souls of people you know, but the Reaper owes Jason and new Gary will be great for Earth. So we are bending the rules on the condition you don't abuse this."

Darthnarciss

Basically it was acknowledged that it'd be impossible to not treat kid Gary differently, and while pushing it, it was acceptable. But what wasn't acceptable would be to turn kid Gary into Gary. Kid Gary is his own person, and it's his soul. Gary lived his life and knowingly sacrificed himself for his friends and loved ones. It'd be a dishonor to that sacrifice to take away kid Gary's autonomy by remaking their friend.

Jordan A

If I’m being honest, I don’t see the point of this chapter. 80% of the chapter could be removed as it has so much fluff in it. The conversation w/ Gary could also be cut in half. Waste of a chapter.

FlareNight

Slightly worse than that. New Gary is a result of Gary tempering his soul. It's offensive to old Gary to treat new Gary the same, because old Gary made an effort for new Gary to be better.

Landsraad

"They thought he was just a normal guy. His girl left him for his best friend and he got expelled from school. Then the mafia showed up, proclaiming him their Young Master" lol

Liesmith

"We reincarnated Gary, as a prank."

Philipp Battenberg

@Arieh at least the rest of Team Biscuit was diagnosed as "will reach diamond rank". And IIRC some even with the qualifier "by being in Jason's wake".

Nayee

You have known Jason for years now. Did he ever explain something that simply?

Nayee

I can definitely see Jason doing that to OG Gary but not to the Kid.

FlareNight

Shade isn't obligated but that doesn't mean he doesn't care. The Reaper's values aren't arbitrary. Shade would step in to help.

Philipp Battenberg

The Reaper does not want the reincarnated person to suffer. If one considers old Gary then reincarnation is meant as more of a reward and not as punishment. So, as long as Jason tries to press new Gary into a mold he doesn't fit, everything is fine.

P K

It's called flavor, I'd much rather read this than "I talked with Melody" I know action can be people cups of tea, but I've read deca books about combat with these characters, I'm enjoying the slower paced, exploring Jason's more stable personality and growth in how he's interacting with others, and it helps tie the characters together for a great tapestry of a story

Jordan A

Someone got a little salty lol. You make a lot of assumptions in your comment PK

MrCynical

Not really? I think the rule was don't try and make current Gary be old Gary. Old Gary died and is dead. Current Gary might, or might not, display old Gary mannerisms or tendencies but is on no way the return of old Gary. Current Gary is only and will only ever be current Gary.

Philipp Battenberg

He might only be a side character now as a pre-essence teen. However, the Big Bad Thing is happening in about ten years, enough time for new Gary to hit Silver and maybe even Gold. Or so would be my guess. As so often, it's probably something we don't know/cannot see yet.

Philipp Battenberg

He could let Shade explain. Shade is good at explaining and is most knowledgeable about the subject of reincarnation and other afterlives.

MrCynical

No he doesn't. He has an elemental messenger birthing tree. That's a big part of the rain Lorenn was so angry to discover what was in the Rexion aperture.

Addie

I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying!

Philipp Battenberg

Jason was rather small-ish, it was already mentioned that if Taika sprouted fur, he could be mistaken for a leonid and Gary is... what? 13? So not really fully grown yet.

Addie

You're not gonna fit in here acting like that.

Addie

I think that the warning they all got when Gary was born isn't being violated. They followed it to the letter. He's still allowed to know where he came from, the main thing being that he and everyone else knows that he's a different person.

Addie

I have a feeling that it's not gonna be messengers coming out of those pods....

Philipp Battenberg

More likely "Shade can you help me explain, I don't want to mess this up for Gary's sake." He is more concerned about the boy's well-being than the Reaper's annoyance.

Jordan A

So you’re against giving feedback? Do you think the author is so sensitive he can’t take it for its intended purpose? Is there a ‘click’ I have to ‘fit into’ to share my opinion? Maybe you’re one of those ‘my way or the highway’ people based on your antagonistic comment. You’re pretty sensitive if you get so worked up over minor comments/feedback.

StarkRG

If all you want is battles, then this probably isn't the series for you. The descriptions of where they were walking was fantastic and the only way I'd consider it "fluff" is in the sense of being comfortable and wanting to bury myself in even more.

StarkRG

It'd probably be a bit of both, but definitely more on the side of Gary's well-being than of concern for the Reaper's desires.

StarkRG

Except that mortals aren't supposed to know what the possibilities are after death. Vellius only told Rufus because he'd probably have done more harm in ignorance than he would with knowledge and guidance. That's not to say I think it's a mistake to tell Gary, but it's definitely pushing the boundaries.

StarkRG

Maybe he'll need to enlist the aid of Emi as Goddess of Cuteness to help raise them.

Justin Crisler

There was a lot to this chapter. My suggestion is you focus more on subtlety. I think, perhaps, you have missed a lot in this series.

Josh Ward

There is quite a bit going on in this chapter. We are getting some much overdue updates on a multi-book side story involving Melody. There is a bunch of exposition in the form of conversation on the nature of Astral Kings. We get an idea of Jason's focus with creating a spot reminiscent of the lagoon for higher level people. A place where they can just socialize and make connections, because that's what Jason does. All of that to set up a highly emotional one on one with a character that so many of us, Jason included, loved, and has been reborn with no clue Who He Is. This chapter is beautiful mate.

Ray S.

Hopefully Nik gets some more members of his species.

OJCOPACABANA

I disagree alot, I felt like this chapter was very nice and easy for me to become completely engrossed in, like I was really in that magical forest for a few minutes

IllustriousIllusionist

Y’all do realize that doing that directly opposes the Reaper right? It infringement on his territory because it’s what happens after death. Don’t forget that Velius told us the Reaper normally doesn’t send souls to same section of cosmos they previously lived cause of this. Jason quite literally being the cosmic throne or rules would have to respect that or risk the Reapers ire. He’ll probably tell Gary a half truth like Obi Wan told Luke about the death of Anakin

TheCrazyDuck

Didn't the reapers prime vessel warm against telling Gary he was reincarnated?

Bushninja

He did so Jason should know not to. However, the only reason I’m not worried is that they are in Jason astral kingdom so if it goes bad Jason should be able to basically delete the memory of telling him

Lonnie

No matter what body he's in, Gary is a solid dude

ABTelford

Oh, nice! Yea…I hadn’t thought of that. Doubt he would without permission but…good thinking!

Andromeda Adams

Tyftc. I do wonder if messengers will come from those pods or the Rabbit race. Either way it will be interesting. Jason don’t tell Gary, it might hurt him.

Donald Rodgers

Yes! I'm fully invested. The details make a story soo much better. There is a lot going on and Shirt takes the time to explain it in these conveesations. It give it such an organic feel. Rather than something changes and a narrator gives an explanation. The convo Sophie'mother gave us a lot if insight on Jason's development of his universe, specifically what seems to be his birthing planet. I've been wondering about his birth messangers for a while. Thanks for the tease!!!

Bingus McCready

Arieh you’re making an objectively fair point but to Jason thinking of relationships in those terms would be anathema. Making a practical romantic decision because it offers more mutual benefit to both parties is about the least Jason thing I can imagine.

usa1ph

Jason is a pseudo great astral being at this point beuase of the system. Telling Gary is what he feels is the right and just thing to do. When has pissing off a higher rank, God, or Great Astral being ever stopped him from doing what was right?

Douglas Davis

What has yet to be explained is whether or not the physical reality in Jason's astral kingdom is a true reality, like a universe built by the builder. Do the planets have actual weather systems? Volcanic eruptions? True natural selection and evolution among the native species? I ask because Jason is very much against being the cause of anyone's death, but he also said he wants inhabitants to feel like they are living in a real world and not a "cartoon." Real worlds mean natural disasters, and sadly often death due to accidents. So how real are these worlds? Or are they all like kiddy play areas with rubber safety bumbers and training wheels?

Vincent Ciavone

I mean it’s been explained a bit, his astral kingdom is a real reality, it’s a universe, astral ship, and Jason’s body all at once. With him holding complete omniscience and omnipotence, he could set up the universe to work like any other, but he’s god of his kingdom, he doesn’t have to let bad things happen, there was a point before he became an astral king that he was testing out his control and essentially turned on and off fundamental principles of reality like it was a switch

Patrick

The info about who you were can drag down, twist or corrupt who you could be. It's like a chain from the past that your mind can't ever really let go of. It causes identity crises' for anyone who knows. Not just the reincarnated. Now it's causing problems because Gary has picked up on it. I tend to think of it as Gary present kind of being Gary pasts son. The child he left behind with many of his characteristics.

Martin Tomsic

Damn onion ninjas just strike without warning! Thank you for the chapter, Shirt!! You are an absolute master at character development and interaction.

Martin Tomsic

I'm not a fan of this analogy, so I'm just going to choose to ignore it. :-P Since this is more akin to making new orchards, I prefer to think of it as Jason accidentally grew a new hybrid "fruit people". Healer is totally Nik's daddy, though.

Martin Tomsic

I don't think Velius will have an issue with Jason saying anything. The problem was in trying to force Gary into being his old self, not telling him about reincarnation being a possibility. It was the idea of stealing Gary's future from him by trying to interfere in his life that Velius was threatening against. I think this has the potential of being a major problem for Gary's mental health, depending on what and how much Jason tells him. But I don't see it as being something that Velius or the Reaper will have an issue with.

Martin Tomsic

I love the idea of the trees birthing rabbit people instead of Messengers. I am curious as to whether they will be able to use essences, as Nik has, or if they will be too inherently magical to use them, like the Messengers and Brighthearts.

Martin Tomsic

Well damn! This whole time I was remembering it as being "Cult of the Reaper Infiltrator", but you are correct that it was "Order" instead. Now I'm worried.

Martin Tomsic

The best way I can think of Jason explaining things would be to describe it along the lines of Gary having a "spiritual" 3rd parent. Tell him that he is being viewed as "Gary Jr." and the rest of them need to do a better job of not putting pressure or stress on the kid.

Martin Tomsic

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but there needs to be a conversation about the "birthing trees/groves" that are growing in Jason's astral kingdom. I'm pretty sure there is a reason that saplings have to be planted outside an astral kingdom. It has been well established that it isn't possible for the Reaper to take the soul of a dead person from Jason's astral kingdom. And if the Reaper can't do it then nobody in the cosmos (save maybe the Throne?) can do it either. It only stands to reason that the converse is also true, no souls can be seeded INTO Jason's kingdom. Jason needed the [Genesis Command: Life] item from Healer in order to create Nik, so I don't think he can spontaneously just create all of the souls himself. I don't see the "peas" coming out of their "pods" any time soon. ----- Others have mentioned the second question about the birthing trees, what will come from them? A number of people seem to think, and I agree, that it will likely be Leheniks (Jason's rabbit people). But I'm curious, will they be gestalts or binaries? Also, will they be capable of using essences or too inherently magical to use them? And if the latter, will they be born as normal rank or at a higher rank?

Martin Tomsic

The warning wasn't that nobody could know about Gary being reincarnated, it was that nobody should try forcing the kid to be Old Gary. In truth, Velius's warning is just good instructions for raising any child, let them grow up according to who they are, not who you want them to be.

Martin Tomsic

From book 9 chapter 71: King of the Sky: "It looked like a human, only bigger. The dark-skinned man was not as tall as Fal himself, but Fal was towering even by the standards of his own kind. This man may have been a full foot shorter, but with his sculpted muscle and majestic size, a pair of wings would have let him pass for a messenger himself." ---- Earlier in the book Fal is described as being at least eight feet tall. So I've been thinking that Taika is somewhere around seven feet tall. Also, at one point Jason is standing with Taika and went to pat him on the shoulder, but since he couldn't reach that high he just patted him around mid-bicep. In all honesty, I've always pictured Taika as looking similar to The Rock, but the size of Andre the Giant. Though now that I think about it, I think he is supposed to be Maui from Moana. He even transforms into a giant bird!

Martin Tomsic

There is no infringement on the territory of the Reaper. The ghosts were not allowed to tell the living what the afterlife was like, it had nothing to do with the realm of the living. Velius was allowed to tell Rufus that reincarnation is not just possible, but was being done en masse on Earth. The problem was not in knowing about reincarnation, it was about Rufus derailing the development of Gary the Kid in order to try recreating his dead friend. That was why Velius made it as a personal threat and not a decree from the Reaper.

Martin Tomsic

@Arieh - In what way is Jason playing with Zara? And why would there be no expectations of her reaching diamond? The whole team reached gold before most of them turned 40, that is very fast on Pallimustus. Especially so, when you consider that Danielle (who is supposed to be a globally elite adventurer) was still only silver when she was their age. Toss in the fact that Zara's training was likely on par with Rufus and Humphrey and she has a few centuries to reach diamond (assuming they don't all rank up in the "Final Boss Fight" that will be coming in a decade or so), then she is about as close to a lock for immortality as you can get.

Kconraw

Thx for the chapter🥲

Rachel Clements

TYFTC and best wishes for your mum.

Mike Zebill

Since Sophie's mum is still in Jason's soul realm are Jaime and Rhett there also? Maybe they could set up a wine and amphora business on Earth.

Mark Parker

Damn right in the feels over Gary...

Martin Tomsic

I kind of hope that we find out down the line that they were running, or at least working at, the gelato shop the officials went to.

J Holmes

You should see his face hitting fist technique. Devastating.

StarkRG

It was definitely partly about knowing about reincarnation. Vellius says that telling him that much was already going too far, but he told Rufus because he'd figure out out on his own anyway and telling him allowed Vellius to warn Rufus about not guiding new Gary to be like old Gary. At one point he says something along the lines of it being one thing for the living to strongly suspect what possibilities exist for souls after death, but another thing entirely for them to know for certain. It clearly isn't an extreme violation, so there's unlikely to be much, if any, repercussion (reapercussion?), maybe just a stern talking to from Vellius.

Josh Vanderpool

Ok people! So I’m on my 6th listen through of the books. Noreth said someone was playing his principals. Dawn was VERY apologetic is regards to “what comes next” it’s not the messengers. I could be the artifact? But I am actually dying to know. Cause it’s almost time. The gang is gold rank. It’s gonna happen soon. I am so nervous.

Martin Tomsic

Force of habit to come and check for the new chapter every M, W, and F. When I got on here I remembered there wouldn't be any new chapters this week and why. Now I feel bad all over again. I really hope things are going well and that your mum gets better soon, Shirt.

Martin Tomsic

It has to be someone powerful enough to set plans in motions at least centuries in advance and capable of manipulating gods and GABs. The only being that I can think of that might fall into that category is the original Builder.

Martin Tomsic

I think it is the Leheniks (Nik's race), but that doesn't change any of the questions that I asked.

Martin Tomsic

I think, at least in the beginning, that Jason's astral kingdom was 100% following the same rules as the universes containing Earth or Pallimustus. Remember, when he first entered with Dawn he didn't even know that he was in control of the laws of reality. That means he had assumed it was running based on normal rules of reality and it either came "preset" that way by the laws of the cosmos, or he instinctively set it that way through his intrinsic knowledge of reality from everything he'd been through. Once he started learning to manipulate his astral kingdom though, he very easily could have "child-proofed" his universe. I'm not sure he would have done that though. I think he would want everything to be as natural and realistic as possible for everyone that ends up living there. You don't want them growing lazy or so carefree that they can't leave without risking their lives immediately. Also can't be too sure how the development of the planets would be thrown off by his interference. It might mean he'd have to micromanage their development instead of just letting them run naturally. ----- On a side note, Jason is not omnipotent or omniscient in his astral kingdom. He has tremendous power, making it seem that way, but he does have limits. He can see and hear everything that goes on in his kingdom, but he doesn't know the thoughts that are actually going through a person's mind. Also, while he can create, destroy, and alter nearly anything, he still cannot manipulate a soul without permission from it.

Douglas Davis

Firstly, you're speculating which is fine but again doesn't answer my question. I can also speculate as to how "natural" his universe is in competition to his inborn nature to not let people die if he can help it. But I'm hoping we can more definitive answer in the actual books. Secondly, you are entirely wrong on the second point. He is very much omniscient and omnipotent inside of his own universe, other than soul manipulation. In fact this has been officially addressed at multiple points in the books. There was a chapter earlier where they talked about how he would subtly save people or stop accidents from happening, like a child walking out in front of a moving vehicle, inside of his universe. Which is what led to my original question. How is Jason going to reconcile his nature to keep people from harm against his desire to promote the growth and development of a real universe where people will inevitably die.

Martin Tomsic

Omniscient and omnipotent literally mean "all-knowing" and "all-powerful" respectively. The fact that Jason does not know the inner thoughts of people and has no power over their souls definitively proves that he is neither. And since you apparently didn't want anyone but Shirt to respond to your quandaries over the "reality" of his astral kingdom, I won't bring it back up.

Douglas Davis

Your arguing semantics. Jason is "all powerful" with in his universe aka astral kingdom in the same way we recognize the common conception applied to the Christian God.

Vincent Ciavone

Potentially the original builder, but the new builder told Jason that the GAB planned to eventually bring him back, so it doesn’t make sense for them to prepare an opponent against it, cause they can’t kill it, so why bring it back if you sealed it away. My thoughts are one of the originals is going to cause a big issue in the astral, Jason just gaining transcendence (tbf with the cosmic throne so he had a super buff), he created the system across the astral, and unlocked different confluence essences . I imagine a trillion year old ‘original’ may find a way to manipulate the astral in a way that defies transcendent physical power while being below the level of GAB

Der Ritter

Im not sure ut if i remember correct then jason says that there are ways for him to keep souls i side his realm but that those ways are all by proxy like trapping them.in flesh abominations. Im not sure its established that sould cant go in and out. And another thing to consider is, that we dont know how sould come to be. Sure some are "recycelt" but who is to say that they cant just "form"

Stephcuv

that would be cool but that wouldnt make sense from a story perspective we already know it was going to happen since jason got back to palli and noboddy knew jason was going to fix the throne or the system that came with it

Martin Tomsic

@Vincent - We know that is the story that the new Builder told Jason, but we don't know that it is truly what the other GABs had planned. They may have just let the new Builder think that. Or it might be that they knew the old Builder would come back at some point and just take its position back when it did. Or so many other things that we haven't thought of. IIRC, the WP said during the Throne battle that the sundering had only happened a week or so ago from the perspective of the GABs. That would mean that the creation of Pallimustus and Earth, the sanctioning of the old Builder, and the raising up of the new Builder all happened within the last few days to them. I wonder if this is a situation where the kids kicked old Builder out of the treehouse and brought in another kid to take his place. Now old Builder is returning to take his toys back, even if the toys don't want to go.

Martin Tomsic

@Der Ritter - That's why I thought it was an important topic that nobody had brought up before (that I've noticed). IIRC, it was mentioned that Collin came from a region that was on the borders of Legion and The All-Devouring Eye. Meaning he came from the place where creation and eradication meet. So I've been speculating that Legions realm was one of the places where souls originate from. And I think that is more likely where Messenger souls come from, rather than the birthing tree just replicating them with no "source" materials like in a more traditional birth. Just looking back at the corrupted birthing tree from the Brightheart city (pre-T-zone), it wasn't producing sapient Messengers. It was producing something more akin to monsters, which possess an animating spirit instead of a true soul.

James Shackelford

No… I am not crying. I got dust in my eye! I miss Gary.

Josh Vanderpool

Ok guys. I am 100 percent convinced it’s the astral kings. I know they’re working with the builder. But it’s them 100 percent. North, Boris, and Dawn all were very surprised with how “early” Jason got his domains and things related to it. Dawn was supposed to come back in around 20 years after the events of the monster surge. Jason pushed that time back. I predict book 12 will end with dawn showing up.

Chloe

Tyftc

Frank Morgana

Those pods definitely have Niks in them not messengers right!!!

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Brad Kelley

Holy crap, 100% left here on a tear jerking cliffhanger. Thank you for the feels.

StarkRG

I really hope so. The fantasy genre needs more Bunnykin.

Nea

I'm not crying, you're crying This was such a beautiful chapter! I loved the imagery, Melodys journey as well as Jasons. And then that sucker punch of an ending?? You are too good at what you do Shirt.

victoria bettley

I like the idea of thinking of him as a son. It helps with the feeling that Gary still lives on him and even thought it came about in a different way, it still works the same. People live on in the memories of their children and people who know both seeing the child and it's triggering memories of the adult. In a sense this is similar I think.

victoria bettley

What a beautiful chapter, so well done with lots of exposition without feeling like a expo dump. Great work Shirt
