Much as I've detested him for multiple books, I ended up feeling sorry for him, trapped the way he was. Anyway, I guess we'll find out. I'll sum up my understanding if it helps. The oldest Vampires need Reality Cores (RC's) to survive and rank up. Those vampires are in competition with world high rankers for the same resources. Some of those Vamps used the RC's in experiments resulting in the Bloody Trees. Bloody Trees are being secreted (planted) around the world as dirty bombs to keep competition as well as enemies on the back foot or busy fighting them while RC's are being exposed and collected. Jason is there to shut down access to RC's once and for all before the Big Earth Balloon pops. Someone that Elizabeth was working with was working the blood tree thing experiments and are now a rogue faction that has splintered off. We can give thanks that Gods are not involved yet. :)

I had a good relationship with my Mom too, and I miss her now that she's gone. But Cheryl had no time for Jason when he needed her. So she brought that on herself. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. As for myself, I have two sons, and we have a good relationship because both know that I will always love them, come what may. I might not necessarily approve of their choices (my eldest thinks he's a woman) but I will always love them. That means a lot to both of them. :-D

Marie was only introduced this book. She's the one who coordinated the mess with the gold rank manifestation in Pakistan, and I believe that's the very first time we've seen her. Elisabeth we know, of course. @ThreeErmz, I'm pretty sure it's mainly the way we're reading it chapter by chapter. Plus we just got back from a big break in the schedule, that worsens it. I trust it'll flow much better once the whole book comes together

Her teleport power is Mirage Step. I remember when she got it Jason told her it took him a while to get a handle on his shadow step ability so she shouldn't expect to be able to do it immediately. So of course she immediately teleported beside him. Ah, good times.

Zara is a gold rank adventurer specializing in storm based destruction. Marie is a bureaucrat and Elizabeth is without Gerling. Both are in deep water with little resources or powers. Also I doubt Zara decided to find and fight them alone. Even if she did, she likely has a Shade with her and Jason can jump to her instantly.

I don't remember if Jakaar is the Diamond-ranked leader of the pirate fleet, or the Gold-ranked captain of the single pirate ship that attempted to invade Earth, but they are two distinct characters. There are no Diamond rankers on Earth, they are banned until Jason is Diamond.
