Chapter 20

I banged my head against the wall of my dubiously acquired house outside of Brockton Bay. 

I steadily and slowly banged it. 

Why was I banging my head against the wall when I had completed my revenge against Empire Eighty-Eight and put all of their capes six feet under? 

Because I felt stupid. 

I felt like an idiot. 

I had a plan.

But instead of going with the plan and kidnapping Kaiser with that power suppressing sword stuck in his body, I went and killed him way too quickly before engaging in a needless exchange with the judge about useless and meaningless debate about the sanctity of the court.

I still believed in that. I still believed that the court and the like were sacred because the breakdown of the justice system would break the country. That’s not my aim.

My aim was to kill the bastards who took advantage of it by hiding by current political climate enforced by parahuman bullshit when it should have been fixed long ago. 

Because Contessa had the Path to Pyrrhic Victory and Brockton Bay was allowed to fall apart despite the fact that Cauldron had a whole continent called Africa that was already doing the “parahuman warlord” experiment for them. 

But I didn’t care about that. I had problems in front of me, and making an example of Kaiser would have been the best choice for me right now! But instead, I felt whimsical and went completely out of character. 

Instead of torturing Kaiser like the bastard deserved, I killed him way too quickly! 

A quick death wasn’t going to deter anyone from fucking around in Brockton Bay! In fact, that might get someone like the Butcher to come around and try doing their bullshit. Ugh. I felt so stupid. So … angry with myself. 

I let out a sigh. 

I couldn’t do anything about it. It was what it was. What I could do, however, was focus on the plan at hand and keep to it. Practice makes perfect… but how was I going to practice kidnapping, torturing, and advertising the fact? It wasn’t like …

I facepalmed myself. 

Right. 

I forgot for a second that the Empire Eighty-Eight (may they forever burn in hell while getting their feet feather-tickled and balls chewed on by a particularly decrepit imp) wasn’t the only criminal group in town! 

I suddenly felt giddy. 

I had more work to do! Oh, I needed to start planning. How should I take care of the Merchants? Should I do something ironic or much more insidious? What about Coil? He was still out and about, and definitely deserved a good crucifying. And then there was the ABB! God, I could put into practice something I should have with Alabaster. 

Yes… I should start anew with the ABB, even if they only had two capes. Or three, if Lung got his hands on Bakuda already. 

Actually, was Bakuda a thing yet? I haven’t heard any news about the Cornell Bomber…

I let out a sigh. 

Well.

At the very least, I get to tell the people that the empire was dead.

Well. 

So that happened. 

Just earlier today, First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston held session where Kaiser was being sentenced. He was the last surviving member of the Empire Eighty-Eight, and everyone knew that he fled to Boston and got himself arrested instead of trying to continue his criminal empire. And we all know why: Everyday Joe.

Everyone knew Kaiser was going to get birdcaged; there was no other avenue for him after the decades of terrorism and criminal entreprise he led. Hell, Kaiser probably knew that, too, and probably banking on it. If there was a place that Joe won’t be able to infiltrate, then it was the Birdcage, and at the very least in Birdcage, Kaiser would be able to live, right? 

Well.

Joe didn’t like that the court was taking his prey away. 

So he infiltrated the court, stabbed Kaiser, killed him by bisecting him, and had a talk with the mad lad judge who did not even flinch when Joe showed up. And all of it was recorded and shown live on national television. And revealed Kaiser’s civilian identity as Max Anders of Medhall Pharmaceuticals. 

Yes, Medhall. The biggest employer within Brockton Bay. The biggest earner in Brockton Bay. The biggest charity giver of Brockton Bay. The literal pillar that refused to leave the city when the Riot of 1998 created the Boat Graveyard… was either the front or the hand behind Empire Eighty-Eight. 

Shocking. 

Utterly shocking. 

For the finance bros, you know what’s happening in the stock market right now. 

For the rest of us, Brockton Bay is descending into chaos as people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ideology are coming out to take a bite out of Medhall for the decades of terror they were involved in. Innocent employees who had zero idea about their employer’s perfidy are getting caught in the crossfire. 

The PRT, Protectorate, police, and firefighters are all running ragged trying to contain the situation but there’s been too many fires already for them to contain. 

Sufficed to say, the situation has gone downhill so fast that the governor of New Hampshire is considering calling upon the national guard to contain the situation. The last time they got called was during the Riot of 1998.

May the Empire rot in hell but God have mercy on Brockton Bay.

Yeah. It’s been all over the news in New England. New England’s oldest criminal cape group is dead. And that Medhall was more or less the one controlling them. It actually makes sense considering that none of their rivals were able to get a hold of Brockton Bay and any who tried got attacked by E88 or E88 associated gangs.

Just ignore him. Yo @Reave can we get an answer already? How the hell did @RegularJoeBB even get into the court anyway? Or most importantly why Kaiser didn’t even try to defend himself?!

Um. So I used to work for Medhall. Used to because I left over a year ago. I had no idea that Medhall controlled E88. I swear I didn’t know.

I agree. Might want to take that down before stupid newcomers think you’re E88 remnant. And I agree with Realfat69. Kaiser just took the hit and let himself die. Are we even sure that the real Kaiser is dead and that wasn’t a poor shmuck you got shanked for dressing up?

I have been given leeway to disclose some facts here on PHO. 

Yes, Kaiser is Max Anders. No, Medhall has not been involved in E88’s activities and were actually victims of money laundering and theft by E88 higher-ups. Yes, Joe killed Kaiser in Boston. We don’t know how he was able to walk into the court without anyone recognizing him but we know he teleported out. Since there are no signs of Joe appearing near Boston, we are presuming that Joe’s teleportation ability can reach Boston all the way from Brockton Bay.
