Something appropriate: Adam would always look back on this day and consider it a turning point.   He'd made friends with Fred when he'd joined the class mid-way through the term.   Through Fred, he'd got to know Fred's younger brother Sid who was in the year below.   His mum was very supportive about him going round to Fred's to play.   She was pleased that he was making friends.   It wasn't easy when you moved to a new area.   She knew it was difficult when Adam's father kept getting promoted and moving between locations.   She'd resigned herself to them being a peripatetic family, always on the move and never putting down roots, but it was hard on Adam.   She's met Fred's mum at the school gates.   She seemed nice if rather posh.  She was the one who spoke posh.  She was the one driving the flashest car.   She was the one who always looked immaculate.   She was the one with style.   She dressed in Chanel and heels for the school run FFFS.   No wonder so many dads seemed keen on doing the school run.    There were rumours that she had a title and that Fred would one day be Lord something or other.  But Fred  seemed like a nice kid.  And they didn't have 'airs and graces'.  The rest of Adam's class seemed to be composed of Emeralds and Joshuas, Cordelia and Caspers.   Only real aristos would call their kids Fred and Sid. Adam had been excited when Fred invited him  round to play one afternoon during the Christmas holidays.  Adam's mum spoke to Fred's mum and made the arrangements.  It was a perfect afternoon.   They played games.   Real games, not computer games.  Board games.  They chatted.   They had a nice tea before Adam's mum  picked up.   It was one of the best afternoons Adam had ever had.   He chatted about it excitedly to his mother on the way home.   Adam would remember it for a long time.   But most of all he would remember how Fred's mum was dressed.   That was one thing he hadn't mentioned on the journey home though the gasp from his mother when Fred's mum opened the front door was enough to tell him its signficance.   Fred's mum's black blazer and silk blouse were stylish but not exceptional.   His mum could do that when she tried.   What struck him was what she was wearing lower down: shiny black pants coupled with knee-high black leather boots with a shiny red sole.     The pants glistened and crackled when she moved.   He  wasn't sure what they were made from.   At first he thought leather, but it would be difficult to get such a shiny finish with leather, and patent leather  would be stiff and uncomfortable.   What then?   He wondered if it was rubber, but rubber wouldn't shine like that.   He eventually had to ask Fred.  Fred said they "PVC" in a totally matter of fact way as if it was totally normally to have a mum who dressed like that.    Apparently Fred's mum did have leather pants (and leather dresses, and latex ones too), but today was a PVC day.   Fred's dad liked it when she wore her PVC pants.   His parents often had an early night when she did. Adam couldn't forget those pants. They stayed etched on his memory.    One day he wanted a girlfriend who wore pants like that.   One day he wanted to wear pants like that.   And boots.   Boots with heels. S xxx
