Ludus Aurea

Ho-lee-fuckin-shit it's almost over 2 more seasons buh bah bah buh I forget which episodes these are so I won't spoiler before watching the videos. but I see our boy Ian McShane and the church/Brotherhood without Banners/Hound scene in he thumbnail. One of the best cameo's in the show IMO, better than you know who with Arya - not sure if that's happened already. Season 4 maybe so yea.

I like Davos and I mostly like Liam Cunningham in this role but I've never understood what he was doing there in the inner circle talking with the Northmen. I mean, Stannis raised him up but Stannis is dead and he never had support in the North anyway. Who would want to hear what Davos has to say? He is a nobody. Lyanna Mormont was ready to dismiss Jon because he's a bastard and Sansa because she's a Bolton, but she listens to Ser No-Name of Nowhere? Even if Jon values him as an advisor, why does he allow him to speak for the North? And Sansa obviously doesn't really trust him. It feels like they just wanted something to do for Liam. Also, I don't think Arya was being smart at all. Wtf was she thinking, just brazenly and openly hanging around Braavos like the Faceless Men, the super famous guild of assassins, weren't obviously going to come looking for her. So dumb. Also, the choice to make Yara gay is... interesting. I don't know how to feel about it. Because she isn't gay in the books but you can definitely argue that there is something of a dearth of female queer representation in the books, at least among the major characters. Especially talking about same-sex attraction, there are obviously a lot of gender non-conformists among the women (including of course Yara herself), but they're all still straight. So I get wanting to introduce that and I have absolutely no issue changing a character from the books in that way. But they chose Yara... the most stereotypically butch, "of course she must be a lesbian" of all the female characters. So I dunno. Because Yara's sexuality is actually explored somewhat deeply in the books, and it's kind of interesting (if a bit disturbing at times), because she's very dominant and domineering but she wants men who are strong enough to dominate her back. There's a whole small arc with this guy who has this big crush on her but he's just too nice and sweet and she's not attracted to him at all, poor guy gets friendzoned hard xD But it seems like the showrunners just kind of looked at Yara and thought "she looks butch, sure, let's make her gay". But all in all, it's a minor point. I'm just always interested in the specific small deviations from the books that they didn't do for plot reasons or because you must necessarily adapt some stuff differently for a tv show. Because these choices reveal the writers' intentions and priorities more than most. Ian McShane was absolutely great, he really did bring a lot to this small, short role, but I don't love the way they brought the Hound back, who was full of hatred and need for revenge before he apparently died and after surviving that, he's... still full of hatred and revenge. Maybe even more so. What kind of character arc is that? In the books, we haven't explicitly seen the Hound return but there's a popular fan theory that states that he did in fact survive and he's now living among some monks who've sworn a vow of silence. Even if that theory isn't true, the way they brought the Hound back in the show is obviously an homage to that. And it's kind of more beautiful in the books because he really does seem to have found peace there (if the theory is true) and let go of his hatred. To bring him back only to bring him back exactly the same is pretty disappointing.

”it’s been that way for six season!” ”And I’ve cried for six seasons!” Arianna’s so real for that.

Eric Wallace

The hounds return wasn't teased anywhere at all for the show. It also was the reason for one of the shows few cold opens because the opening would have revealed the actor being in the show

Christophe

Some people did kind of sleuth it out though because of the casting of Ian McShane which was announced to be in the role of "Elder Brother" or something like that. And that relates to the gravedigger theory of the books that says that the Hound is alive among some monks, the elder of which is just called the Elder Brother.

Vasili Brasinikas

"I mourned this man!" "Yeah, Jaime's pretty cool when he's not raping his sister." "I've been crying for six seasons!" The commentary was on point today lol

Ludus Aurea

Technically medieval soldiers weren't paid so it depends. They serve their liege lord and if they don't like it they can die.

Christophe

Yeah well, we critique because we care. I certainly don't have this many things to say on shows that I think are just bad and aren't worthy of a further thought. I love the books and loved the early seasons of the show and the choices they made in later seasons are just heart-breaking to me. So I like to vent.

Joe Blankenship

Finally! Been waiting for this episode! I remember being just as shocked as yall were that the Hound was still alive. Plus, seeing Ian McShane on GoT was a pleasant surprise too. Not long before this aired, I had just watched Deadwood for the first time. Ian McShane is one of my all-time favorites because of that show. I hope y'all get around to it someday.

Joe Blankenship

He might still be stewing on shit from his past, but he was clearly content to ignore it and live a peaceful, uncomplicated life with this little commune. Until they all got slaughtered. So yeah... I'm thinking he's back.

OldManGrim

Bella's performance here is what got them their lead role on The Last of Us (pronouns are they/them, btw). They are such a badass, right out the gate.

Christophe

Yeah, fair enough, @Joe. It's not that it doesn't make sense, I can definitely see the idea. I guess I would have liked it if we had spent like 2, or 3 episodes with these guys, actually seeing a bit more of the changed Hound, before they got murdered and gave him the impetus to go back to his hateful ways. But maybe that would have been too long and boring. I dunno.

Jess

Y'all think WAY too much of Marg. She is a bad person, she's just a different kind. She didn't care about the poor- it was all an act for power.

Jonathan Blaze

"Do you know this wretched girl?" - Stannis in Season 5, referring to Lady Mormont. lol.

Kevin Landon

I was just giving you a hard time for the essay 😜 I totally agree that they needed to flesh out the motives of characters more in the final seasons, it's not that the narrative couldn't make sense like you said, it just felt so rushed

T.wiley

Maple singing Creed made my day lol

Jay schmidt

Who really cares what the motive for helping is? Shes never done anything bad. Manipulating joffrey and tommen was literally to the benefit of EVERYONE except Cersei. Like shes one of the few people that plays the game right and isnt evil.

Jeffrey Hall

I'm so happy to be catching up with you guys on this series again! If you ever want to watch a straight up masterpiece, check out Deadwood (HBO, 2006) One of the main characters is Ian Shane, the guy who saved the hound. He plays one of the greatest villains ever. Story writing is so top tier in that show.
