Did Yahweh have a Wife? Asherah is an goddess and cultic object well, though mysteriously, attested in the Hebrew Bible - but what do we really know about Asherah? Let's explore the the history of this goddess: divine matriarch, consort and power behind the throne. From ancient Babylon, the Hittite Empire, the Canaanites, the Hebrew Bible and South Arabian texts let's see what we can learn about this goddess. Do recently discovered inscriptions even indicate that she was the lost or even suppressed Wife of Yahweh? And, how does the Kabbalah restore Asherah as the Divine Feminine? Let's explore the history and mythology of Asherah. EPISODE ON ANAT YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. She's like a cross between Kali Maa and an Elric from FMA, holy shit what she did in retaliation when her brother died. A woman after my own heart. She makes me proud. ::wipes away a tear:: You'd also mentioned in your first video about Yahweh that there are a few stories about the Canaanite El having a few too many drinks from time to time, and I would *love* to hear those. I have a feeling going up to the Norse lands to do a video about the elusive Loki, or up to the Celtic lands for one on the Morrigan or Brigid might be outside your scope, though if you think it'd be fun to do, I would absolutely not say no! My heritage is Celt on one side, and Norse/German on the other, so the subject's personal to me. But hell, a video about the origins of Aphrodite would be amazing. I know there's the thought that she might've been a transplanted version of Astarte, and my friend who's a Hellenist and has a BA in the subject, has a pet theory that within the mythology, she was meant to be a trap of some kind by Ouranus (I think I got the right god), which is why neither Zeus nor Apollo, the two "biggest man-sluts," as she put it (which she says with love as she's a devotee to Apollo most specifically), wouldn't touch her, and Zeus was fast to marry her off to Hephaestus to keep Hera from marrying her to Ares. I don't remember what she said that trap might've been, and I might be getting a couple of details about her theory wrong, but damn. Hearing outside thoughts from an academic perspective would be super entertaining.

I know very little about Hittite mythology so anything you can come up with would probably be interesting.

I know a little about Hittite mythology but I'm not clear how much is their own and what came from the Hatti, Mitanni and Mesopotamia. I hope you'll be able to clarify that.

Glad you are feeling better!

cool! i forgot Josiah had that whole moment yelling about the Asherah, the story i'm writing has a character based on him, not sure it's going well writing-wise but this was a fun moment of "oh right, he did that!" ^.^

I loved this thank you! Yesss to the Zohar bringing her right back in as a necessary appreciation of the divine in all its fullness. Thank you! Excited to join you in New England next year!

I'm right here in the Celtic lands of Wales, so hit me up if you want to visit! And I second on a vote for an episode on the origins of Aphrodite.

I'm definitely interested in more content on early Canaanite Gods and Goddesses, how they relate to religion in other nearby cultures. I'm also interested in what we know about other gods being worshiped in the temple and all the other things that God hates (Ezekiel 8); not that I enjoy upsetting God, I'm just curious.
