The Viagra Boys did a cover of "In Spite of Ourselves"with Amy Taylor on the album Welfare Jazz which I recommend for your listening pleasure. I also wanted to recommend: Steve Hauschildt-Aeropsia Kelly Moran-Don't Trust Mirrors Shigeto-Versions EP The former two being more ambient and electronic and the latter one being more jazz infused by one of my favorite percussionists. I missed this AMA though I'm thoroughly enjoying the questions and answers. Big thanks to you for answering them and the Michael and Us nation for asking them!

Luke, you are Pagliacci, because when I'm in the gym I listen to Michael and Us

I know I'm a habitual over-writer and my question was too long, but I didn't mind a long response. That's kind of what I wanted. I do think indifference to civility is probably the best attitude, but it seems like many of your peers feel differently, like how Chapo Trap House always calls people "civility dorks" and I was so afraid you'd laugh at me or call me too Sorkin-brained (I probably am too Sorkin-brained...) But you guys seem to have the right balance between irony and sincerity in that you may come out of that dirtbag left scene but your Canadian charm and its resulting stereotypical politeness form a more appropriate balance I think. (That's why I'm subscribed to you and I'm not subscribed to any of the other dirtbag left podcasts, even though my movie tastes are quite pedestrian...)

Love the civility/incivility analysis. I would add general immiseration, and and that this extends beyond the discourse. I work with kids. How often a staff member will lose their temper and be uncivil with a kid is often pretty directly proportional to their working conditions.

You mentioned on the first ep you like bluegrass, have you heard the bluegrass cover of Dylan's Oxford Town by Crooked Still? https://youtu.be/_C4g8sMVbIM?si=hdjGoNA-qmEsjCMm

And family life is a great distinction that hadn’t come to mind re: Sisko/Picard, which goes to why Sisko is generally warmer in relationships. From the performance side I think their American theatre vs British theatre backgrounds contribute to their characters in interesting ways

really enjoyed these episodes! i wish i'd been more precise with my question about bad early date movies, though; while The Room is bad, it's at least fairly consistently enjoyable in a way that i didn't have in mind. my first girlfriend really hated when i exposed her to Southland Tales, but in a way that was really fun for me and informative for her about me. similarly, i'm very glad that i successfully begged my second girlfriend to see Megalopolis with me and then had a really fun conversation about its insane and incoherent ideology that mixes West Wingy antipopulism and civility-fetishizing with David Graeber, Ayn Rand, and a bizarre composite of implicitly glorified Roman coups.

Appreciated your disavowal of prairie centrism in the NDP, I lived in Alberta for a few years and think the party holds itself back by running milquetoast candidates. In 2018, Heather McPherson narrowly won the internal candidacy race for Edmonton Strathcona, winning by less than 20 votes, against a millennial candidate I canvassed for along with many other young workers disaffected with the Alberta NDP and Rachel Notley (who McPherson was backed by). It was a formative political experience for me, and while I try not to be a sore loser that McPherson squeaked out a victory, I hope it doesn’t become forgotten that she did not have broad support for being the federal NDP candidate in the riding that’s remained the sole Alberta holdout for the party federally

This is really helpful to note, especially given her entrance into the federal leadership race. Perhaps, as is often the case, centrism is not quite as broadly popular as we've been led to believe

Just wondering - have you encountered any of the impassioned debate over Pevear/Volokhonsky? There was an essay a while ago in Commentary (i know, but…) called The Pevearsion of Russian Literature that made a fairly convincing argument that they were making choices that might be technically accurate but lacking in beauty and flow. I looked at their translation of The Master and Margarita and thought it seemed clunky compared to the Burgin/O’Connor one that i love. But i haven’t read much of their work and it’s not like i really know Russian.

A fun listen! Has Will considered the possibility of an AMA?
