Sally Kirkland just died! RIP

It's interesting what you're saying about this missing the curated aspect of reality tv because I remember early UK Big Brother having 24 hour feeds on the house that you could watch in the early years on E4. Didn't watch myself as was too young but sister used to watch it when she got home from late restaurant shifts, she said it was pretty boring as they were mostly just sleeping but she still watched. I guess at that point the reality tv concept was still quite new so there was novelty in it. I'm pretty sure the Kinga incident is what stopped them airing the 24 hour feeds (basically a very infamous UK reality tv moment where a contestent did explicit things with a wine bottle while the live feed was airing) 00s UK reality tv was utterly deranged, mean spirited and often very politically reactionary in a way that could make for an interesting episode (stuff like benefits street, jeremy kyle, super size vs super skinny etc.) but equally I don't want to inflict that awfulness upon you both.

Are you going to do a comparison between EDTV and Louis 19?

Luke do you know the German-Korean philosopher Byung Chul-Han? Every time I hear about his thoughts and ideas I am reminded of you and your interests. This time it was his idea that the old “panopticon” thesis of society as described by Foulcault, which is society defined by externally forced surveillance and coercion is absolete and has been replaced by “positive” internal surveillance and coercion. He cites Obamas “yes we can” as an example of the prevailing positivism of neoliberalism which is in a way even more oppressive than the old fashioned “yes you must” as it is now YOUR responsibility to make something of life and forces everbody to police themselves first and foremost. He has more ideas that I think you would relate to as he’s also working in a German romantic tradition. Sorry I should’ve posted this question/recommendation at the Q&A two weeks ago but it didn’t occur to me then.

I’ve not seen EdTv but I have seen Louis 19 and I feel like the story is pretty much the same with a depressing Québécois sheen on it. Slightly better filmmaking as well.

I feel like a recent and even more joyless iteration of the premise or themes in EdTV might be the recent vanity project, Marry Me, where Jennifer Lopez is a pop star that decides to marry an everyday man played by Owen Wilson as a big public gimmick. Owen Wilson teaches her the value of not having cameras pointed at her at all time, and Jennifer Lopez teaches him to have fun or some shit. It has a lot of Jimmy Fallon instead of Jay Leno. It’s awful. You should watch it.

Some potential titles for an All In The Family reboot: Still In The Family The Bunkers All In The Family: The Next Generation Meathead & Me

A Michael and Us episode genuinely looking at all in the family I think would be really interesting

Super delegates we have to get our friends Will and Luke to talk about Albert Brook’s Real Life. Yeah that sounds like a great idea
