I gotta admit that if one treats Xander's sudden fright as just 'cold feet' and think only of the effect this has on Anya -- instead of thinking also of the effect the sudden traumatizing visions had on Xander himself -- then one is being just like Buffy ('you're making this about yourself again!') and forgetting the impact this has on Xander as well. I know. It's hard to think of anyone except the bride in a wedding, since it's all apparently about her. Still... there are other people involved.

I don't think the audience would be any more sympathetic if Anya had ditched out on marrying Xander because she had been shown visions like that. In fact, I think the audience at large would have wanted to crucify her. Which is exactly what I still want to do to Xander twenty years later, not only for abandoning her, but for the way he behaved about it afterwards, most ESPECIALLY in 6x18.
