Only my opinion, but I find it a pompous, self-important potboiler, albeit with excellent visuals. It's riddled with plot holes and requires the characters to act with such staggering idiocy as to make the Nostromo crew look like they belong in MENSA. It becomes better if you look at it as a standalone sci-fi movie, instead of part of the Alien franchise, but even then it's only middling. I can't help but admire the excellent atmosphere and visuals, but other than that, there's not much to recommend it. Thankfully, it seems Alien: Earth will be retconning a lot of it.

In an interview, Ridley Scott said that the reason the engineer's (the big guys) ship was on it's way to Earth to destroy us even though at the beginning of the film they sacrificed theirself to make DNA to create us was because they sent Jesus to help put us on the right path and since humans killed him they were coming to take out the rest of us but since the ship crashed it didn't happen. They filmed a scene where it is explained but cut it out because the producers felt it was too heavy handed.
