Dear Patreon Boys,

The Great Depression saw a downturn in all leisure activities. Theatre, publishing, the movie industry, all took a dive. Boxing was no different. The people still wanted the sport and coverage in the papers was still popular, but few were willing to part with the money to go and watch the fights.

With the death of Tex Rickard, Mike Jacobs and James Johnston vied for control of the heavyweight division and, therefore, the box office. But with no champion able to hold the belt for more than a few months since the departure of Dempsey and Tunney, the division felt like a farce. That is until Mike Jacobs was approached by John Roxborough and Julian Black who insisted that they had a young, black heavyweight who was a sight to behold...

Please feel free to share this episode with your friends and thank you sincerely for your continued support of the Fights Gone By podcast!

Cheers,

Jack

It's 4AM here and my phone goes off with a Pateron notification, Jack Slack has posted. Well, so much for sleep. Keep up the incredible work.

history episodes are getting better and bette. great job Jack

Striking Hasselt

Jack, great episode, but why no actual fight footage?

Franklin Giberson

Still waiting for a catch-as-catch-can episode. Personally its one of my favorite topics and you've probably read a lot more on it than I have. Whatever you cover next I'm sure will be great.

Poopoo

A Marcelo Garcia episode would be great imo but do what you wanna do jack

Kylancomeault

If you wanna do mma history maybe the early unsung UFC champions, Carlos Newton, Ricco Rodriguez, Dave menne, Bustamante, Tanner, Jens, and Pat Mietich.

Kylancomeault

Or the Chute boxe and BTT and the rivalry between them as well as the development of mma in Brazil after the Gracie's.

Kevin Wilson

Great work Jack! I first found you from your YouTube videos and love that your going back to it. I never understood why Fightland never let you do more of the ring craft series but at least your doing it now!

Matt Lake

A few suggestions: Roberto Duran, Rocky Marciano, Archie Moore, Fedor. Keep up the great work.

Nika Zardiashvili

Great podcast as always, Jack! As for the ideas about the next one: why not simply do one about Fedor? I know his career through and through, but I would happily listen to your opinions on everything about Fedor for an hour.

Nika Zardiashvili

Oh and as you're going along with boxing lectures, please don't miss Archie Moore! I know you're follow the HW title and he never won it, but the guy is far too fascinating both as a person and as a fighter to miss, right? Cheers!
