The Great Depression saw a downturn in all leisure activities. Theatre, publishing, the movie industry, all took a dive. Boxing was no different. The people still wanted the sport and coverage in the papers was still popular, but few were willing to part with the money to go and watch the fights.
With the death of Tex Rickard, Mike Jacobs and James Johnston vied for control of the heavyweight division and, therefore, the box office. But with no champion able to hold the belt for more than a few months since the departure of Dempsey and Tunney, the division felt like a farce. That is until Mike Jacobs was approached by John Roxborough and Julian Black who insisted that they had a young, black heavyweight who was a sight to behold...
