And so the dramatic reveal about Shigaraki’s origin. When this dropped in the manga it was divisive, and still is a good bit amongst the fandom. But given how convenient a lot of aspects of Tenko’s origin were, it made sense. Horikoshi later revealed in the final fan book that the yellow launch rings that AfO and Shigaraki have used throughout the final battle were actually Tenko’s original quirk. And yes, that was Overhaul that AfO created Decay from. He used to live in one of Doctor Garaki’s orphanages as a child before he was adopted by the Yakuza.

All for one found the grandson and purposly nudged him over years to have a second kid then over those years also constantly feed the father's hatred of heros and hero society already inbeded in him due to his mom's choices. Then after birth steals Shigis quirk to give him a corrupted version of Overhauls quirk that could only destroy. He even setup his childhood friendships to spark Shigis love for heros to purposly trigger his dad. He had everything planned to make a man born of tragedy at every point. Then with the talk of the Id, ego, and super ego it seems AFO is a fan of Sigmund Freud could be a hint of other ideas he holds.

interesting how afo becoming shigaraki's house and he is always saying how "he wants everything connected to that house destroy" which used to meant he wanted to destroy the world but in now symbolically he wants to destroy Afo "Now get out of MY body' just really shows how he never saw him as a person just another tool and I notice how when he took over his body his hair is so unmoving while shigaraki’s has been actively flowing in the wind giving Afo an also inhumane feel, and also him creating a hand over his mouth to quiet Tenkos cries. Mineta coming in at the end with the motivating a nice grow from season 1 back on the boat when he was crying

I actually don’t think AFO was gloating about how he made shiggy what he is. He was doing what I think was discussed last episode, he was sapping shiggys will to fight. While AFO is a top tier shit talker, he uses it to his own ends. he got a few hits on all might in their season 3 battle by talking about his master. AFOs words about how it’s dekus turn for AFO to mess with him, was replaying in his mind constantly when he was away from UA stretching himself too thin. He knows shiggys hatred is a problem, if AFO shoves shiggy down then that hatred will only fester, but if he convinces shiggy that literally everything he is, is a tool for AFO even the hatred then it’s harder to fight. I think AFOs gloating was also an argument, if AFO curated everything about shiggy down to the smallest detail. From the quirk, to the ideology, to the Nomu modifications, AFO says “get the hell out of my body” is literally saying I made this vessel you only happened to inhabit it

That's interesting. That would be a defeating point for what he was saying just moments before the cracks emerged, about his conviction and purpose as a villain. But also maybe not a great counter for what Deku has hopefully instilled. And also, not a great counter overall in the sense that the way to prove now that he does have free will is to stand up to AFO (with whatever he has left)

It also should be worth noting that AfO is doing a good bit of gaslighting with Tomura here in order to break his spirit and take control. While he did manipulate Shigaraki’s entire existence, Tomura DID make decisions on his own a good amount throughout the story. As for Kotaro, while AfO might’ve manipulated him subtly, his resentment of his mother and heroes was likely very much there already there. AfO simply reinforced those feelings, and in the end Kotaro was the one that decided to hit his own child.

I was WAITING for your reaction to Mineta's speech at the end there lol. Out of all character's Horikoshi could've had say all that, I can actually respect that he chose Mineta, even if we didn't see much of the process he's clearly grown and matured in his own way. Your emotional investment for his growth is finally starting to pay dividends!

Music related comment of the week: at around 13:30 the theme playing is the orchestral version of “Sixth Magnitude Star” which was the previous ending song, and last used in the show during the Uraraka/Toga fight. I actually last mentioned it on I believe the first Orb video. As I mentioned, a sixth magnitude star is typically the faintest visible star to the naked eye. I think it’s pretty much the perfect theme to represent what both Deku and Uraraka manage to achieve. There’s already so many parallels between them and the way they reach out to Shigaraki and Toga, so it feels fitting that they’d bring it back for the moment Shigaraki’s hatred begins to crumble.

Absolutely, as far as responsibility is concerned, the mastermind plot only goes SOME of the distance. In fact the "mastermind" part of it is probably more knowing WHO can be pushed, as opposed to some sort of puppet like control.

I think I focused a lot in early episodes about how a not-so-great (on paper) motivation can be great just for getting the ball rolling if it carries real motivational energy. This came up at least with Uraraka (money) and Mineta (attention from girls). A true credit to all of them, no matter their entry points, is that they felt moved by something and submitted themselves to trials in pursuit of that goal. And since they stuck with it, not only did they get more competent and resourceful as a whole, but they also continuously revised their outlooks and ultimate aims. It's one of my favorite things about the ensemble cast in MHA

Shigarakis decay was a "poor imitation" of a quirk the doctor got from an orphanage. A quirk that "just can destroy". That kid from the orphanage that Shigaraki got a half copy from was Overhaul (thus tieing every plotline together)

Personally the AFO twist is my least favourite in the show though I will admit it does make sense. I don't like the show quadrupling down on him being esssentially the source of all the world's problems, or at least not to this extent. Not spoiling anything but having an all encompassing evil like this makes the solution to fighting it way more simple (which to me is usually less engaging) than a more nuanced and human evil like Shigaraki. It doesn't ruin the show for me it put too much work for it to be undone by one bad decision (and from what I've seen I'm in the minority here so Idk) Next episode is still peak though regardless

Shigaraki's line about being a hero for the villains really stuck with me. Not necessarily because he's in the right but it's the first goal he's shared to the world that isn't pure destruction and hate, instead it's compassion towards people like him who were abandoned by society. Without Deku's help i don't think he'd have come to that realization himself, goes to show how infectious deku's will to save people is

I love the symbolism of the quirks OFA and AFO. OFA is a metaphor for altruism. It takes your own strengths and gives it onto others. It only ever takes from your own lifeforce if you already have another quirk, so it discourages hoarding. Its full potential is unleashed in the hands of someone who didn't have a quirk in the first place. Meanwhile, AFO is a quirk that manifests as holes in the palm of the user's hand. It is like an insatiable void that's constantly grasping and taking in anything to fill itself. Like Yoichi mentioned before, with the power to give and take, AFO could have been the kindest quirk in the world, but its user only ever knew how to take to survive.

Vindication! I knew it was way to convenient that it all fell into place like that without AfO orchestrating it somehow! But man, every time I think I couldn't possibly hate him more...At least he didn't get what he really wanted out of it. I'm assuming, rather than transfering it, Deku smashing OfA into Shigaraki destroyed all it's components on impact? Or something. But yeah, only Deku, man, only Deku. I love the grand Aizawa Avengers Endgame moment, I'm so glad they are all here to have his back for the face off with AfO. And Eri getting to give back to both her Heroes, Mirio and Deku, so good! I just wish I understood the way it works better, like how can she rewind Mirio half a year, but not Aizawa's eye/leg? Oh well, I guess he just thinks the new look is cooler. Also, I just realized: If I'm right and that was indeed Chisaki, then Eri's rewind fixed what an offshoot of Chisaki's quirk destroyed, another full-circle moment, wow! Speaking of Aizawa, it's interesting that he was Mr.-Be-rational in S1, but now he seems much more emotionally driven? I wonder if that was a gradual change, or if ShirakumoKurogiri is just a special case. Then again, his appeal to Deku was emotional (hear Eri sing) and so was his reaction to what Eri did, since Ectoplasm framed it as a rational solution? Hm, I'm not sure, but I feel like his character arc fits somewhere on that emotional vs rational sliding scale we were talking about with Deku's and Hawks' choices...

I like your analysis of Aizawa here. Though I think more often than Aizawa would care to admit, he acts on emotion or gut instinct but rationalizes it with logic. Like in the final exam with Momo and Todoroki ("That man is a softie"). And look at Aizawa's big grin when Midoriya shows "potential" in the ball throw—sure, his decision not to expel Midoriya is a rational one, but Aizawa is also clearly eager to teach the kid. And in his conversation with All Might afterward, All Might points out that Aizawa's rationale for expelling students is rooted in a form of kindness. (Based on later revelations, I would add fear—he doesn't want his students to die like Shirakumo did.) But really, how often is our "logic" rooted ultimately in emotions like love and fear? We choose one job over another because of the pay increase—logical—but we value the pay increase because it means we don't have to fear insecurity or that we can satisfy more of our desires, etc. Now I'm rambling, but I think there's a case to be made that decisions based on cold, rational thinking still come from some deep place of emotion.

Edit: Wow this ended up being a lot longer than I thought. I hope anyone actually reads this. About the whole "Shigaraki wants to be a hero for the villains" thing. It's very obvious that the league of villains was toxic as hell. Like, these people were not good for each other, and their goals would not have helped them or anyone else. But... that was kinda the point. Especially with characters like Spinner, Toga and especially Twice, the whole point of their characters is that they're in the league of villains because they really had nowhere else to go. Because they wanted the purpose and the connection and the love and everything else that comes with being close to others so badly that the toxicity of that whole group, including their own, was something they were willing to ignore, or even celebrate just to feel closer to each other, just to feel like they really got to know each other's "real selves". Spinner admired Shigaraki for his drive. Toga thought that if Shigaraki destroyed the world, she'd be free. Twice was glad that the league still believed in him. Mr. Compress plays the straight man but he was clearly willing to go to some extremes to propel the league, so I'd say he cared a lot more than he let on. And Touya was the guy they picked up along the way, and mourned when he was gone, even tho he clearly never really gave a damn about them. Just because they wanted that for him too. If that isn't painfully human then I don't know what is. And Shigaraki... ever since the day he killed his family, for the longest time, he really didn't do much but listlessly follow the path that AfO put out infront of him. Hate, destroy, never forget, never settle down. Look at the rest of the world and be resentful that they would push him away, that they would ignore him, in favor of shining icons like All Might. It's pretty brilliant on AfO's part, because it feels so natural. No doubt plenty of people went through exactly what Shigaraki experienced too, the isolation, the abandonment, being discarded and morphing into what's ultimately just an irritation in the eyes of society. But it's also a very common and effective method of manipulation to take someone vulnerable and isolate them, cut them off from all support to make them believe they are truly alone, unless they rely on their manipulator. AfO probably had a pretty easy time feeding poor Tenko a story about the evils of society that would stick with him his whole lonely life. So in a way, giving Shigaraki proper comrades, as well as allowing him to transform into a proper villain with motivations and goals, was the first big mistake that AfO made. Because it started a chain reaction that ultimately led to Shigaraki rejecting him during the final battle. As for Shigaraki wanting to "be a hero to the villains"... I think it's pretty novel all in all. And very beautiful, in a very sad way. Because it's the one part of him that harkens back to how he used to be, before he lost everything. AfO probably only put him on the track of aspiring hero to pin him against his own father, and later foster some sense of disappointment with heroes like All Might. But Shigaraki got more out of that than AfO bargained for. Sure, you can dismiss everything he wants to do as pointless and harmful, because the end result is so devastatingly horrible. It's true that Shigaraki was never anything more than a blind man flailing in the dark. Never realizing what he really wanted, never understanding how to get anywhere. But I think the point of it all is that, in that singular aspect, that one simple foundational feeling, he's exactly like Deku. Because he saw a bunch of wretched, downtrodden, twisted individuals who knew nothing besides how to hurt themselves and others, and he thought "I wanna be there for those guys". He's the only guy who would stand at the very edge of the current era, with all the power to decide the fate of the world, and then genuinely contemplate what Spinner would like to see. And in a way, that was exactly the point of his hatred. He hated the world because that world would never look at Spinner or himself or any of his comrades that way. Hence why it's once again so beautiful that it all ended with Deku breaking through the barrier that AfO set up, and being there for no other reason than because Shigaraki needed him to be there. Like, I cannot stress this enough, for Deku there was no point whatsoever in doing that besides genuinely wanting to help Shigaraki, and that's exactly what got through to him in the end.
