Hello everyone,

On Wednesday I will release a Patrons-only bonus episode to those at the $6 a month level. It’s just answering one listener’s question about why more Byzantine sites have survived. At the end of that episode I will address an important change to our dynamic.

I have decided not to produce any more Byzantine Stories until we reach the end of the narrative.

As you know in the past I have produced episodes about Women in the Roman world, Healthcare, Cyprus, Saint Demetrios, John Chrysostom, Porphyrius the Charioteer and so on. My goal with that series is to bring the daily life of ordinary Romans into focus. And I have a ton of topics I would still like to give that detailed treatment to. But they are incredibly time consuming to produce. And so I’ve decided to just keep going to 1453 AD before making any more of them.

This is in part a response to having had a child and life becoming more congested. And the fact that the podcast is already 12 years old. It feels like the right thing to do.

I wanted you to all know this because some of you will be subscribing at the $6 a month level in order to receive bonus content. Now there may still be the occasional bonus episode of the narrative. But mainly the perks at the $6 level will now be these one-off audio answers to questions (like the one coming out on Wednesday). And access to Zoom calls that I host. I actually have a plan for later this year to host a game that I’ve designed. Which I think will be called ‘Who Wants to be a Byzantine Emperor?’

Now some of you may be happy to stick around for that. But some of you may prefer to downgrade your subscription. Or come back after 1453 when there are more bonus episodes available. The nice thing about Patreon is that it’s up to you. You can pick up or drop your subscription at any time and all the episodes will be here waiting for you.

If you’ve just paid for a year’s membership in advance expecting Byzantine Stories then message me and I can refund you and you can manage your sub however you prefer.

The good news is that I now have an answer to the question “What will you do when you get to 1453?” I’m going to produce a string of Byzantine Stories about topics I’ve been desperate to get to for years. Including science and engineering, Roman law and the life of a judge and the greatest con man in Byzantine history. Amongst many others I’m sure.

That’s it for now. We’re back to the narrative next week. Thanks so much for your support.

Go Robin! Rooting for you, my friend! The podcast is an epic accomplishment, and I am happy to support!

Very happy to hear this honestly. I love the podcast and all the episodes, but with the narrative having slowed down so much the past few years I think it'll be quite satisfying to get all the way through the Pailaiologans and finish the story. Endless stuff still to do after that anyways!

Robin, I'll give you $6 for as long as your patreon is active even if it came with no rewards. You deserve it.

I support your plan, Robin. Thanks for all the great work you deliver for us.

For me personally, I mainly subscribe to you on Patreon BEACUSE of the narrative episodes, and because I want you to keep going with them. I also enjoy the bonus episodes, but I fully support that it’s time to wrap up the narrative - and I will stay subscribed, even if it means no added content, as long as we continue the narrative.

The only distractions from the end-goal that I think would be well-received at this point would be the typical end of century material, with subscriber episodes that focus on the smaller states that have been getting short shrift, like Trebizond, which would add some depth to the narrative.

When I graduated from university and got my first real job, one of the first things I did was sign up for your Patreon. I would have done it even without the bonus episodes. The quality of the narrative episodes that you produce and the hard work you put into creating them are worth more than what we pay. Thank you for your dedication and courage for pursuing what you are passionate about. I’m sticking with my subscription to the History of Byzantium until the very end. 😊

You're all so kind, I really appreciate it

I pay because I feel this much work requires compensation. $6 is cheap. Can’t get a fast food meal that cheap anymore. Lol

Honestly, I was considering saving some money and reallocating the money to another pod or thing. But today's episode was such a great example of you engaging your audience directly, including them in discussion and deepening our own understanding. The level of engagement with listeners and the quality of discussion is unparalleled. Truly, you cannot get this level of deep engagement outside a university course on the topic, and I'm too old to go back to school!

Same. $6 is nothing cosidering the amount and, most importantly, the quality of this podcast.
