Byzantine Stories update (Patreon)
Content
Hello everyone,
On Wednesday I will release a Patrons-only bonus episode to those at the $6 a month level. It’s just answering one listener’s question about why more Byzantine sites have survived. At the end of that episode I will address an important change to our dynamic.
I have decided not to produce any more Byzantine Stories until we reach the end of the narrative.
As you know in the past I have produced episodes about Women in the Roman world, Healthcare, Cyprus, Saint Demetrios, John Chrysostom, Porphyrius the Charioteer and so on. My goal with that series is to bring the daily life of ordinary Romans into focus. And I have a ton of topics I would still like to give that detailed treatment to. But they are incredibly time consuming to produce. And so I’ve decided to just keep going to 1453 AD before making any more of them.
This is in part a response to having had a child and life becoming more congested. And the fact that the podcast is already 12 years old. It feels like the right thing to do.
I wanted you to all know this because some of you will be subscribing at the $6 a month level in order to receive bonus content. Now there may still be the occasional bonus episode of the narrative. But mainly the perks at the $6 level will now be these one-off audio answers to questions (like the one coming out on Wednesday). And access to Zoom calls that I host. I actually have a plan for later this year to host a game that I’ve designed. Which I think will be called ‘Who Wants to be a Byzantine Emperor?’
Now some of you may be happy to stick around for that. But some of you may prefer to downgrade your subscription. Or come back after 1453 when there are more bonus episodes available. The nice thing about Patreon is that it’s up to you. You can pick up or drop your subscription at any time and all the episodes will be here waiting for you.
If you’ve just paid for a year’s membership in advance expecting Byzantine Stories then message me and I can refund you and you can manage your sub however you prefer.
The good news is that I now have an answer to the question “What will you do when you get to 1453?” I’m going to produce a string of Byzantine Stories about topics I’ve been desperate to get to for years. Including science and engineering, Roman law and the life of a judge and the greatest con man in Byzantine history. Amongst many others I’m sure.
That’s it for now. We’re back to the narrative next week. Thanks so much for your support.
