This episode is so gorgeous! It’s both heartbreaking and uplifting. I’ve been very interested in how the show (and the comic, actually) have framed the storytelling of this part. It’s such a delicate line and I think it really let the subtle elements of the show shine. For instance, the leaves painted on the wall of the inpatient center, and the music from the first kiss in S1 plays when they kiss during Nick’s visit, the bedding at the inpatient is yellow, which has always been the color associated with Charlie. Those have so much emotion tied to them that it makes us feel things without having to explicitly say them. Even framing it as Charlie is back and Nick is happy to see him from the very start of the episode helps us as the audience tolerate the rough stuff and gives it that Heartstopper sweetness. Did you notice any storytelling shorthand in this episode that spoke to you?

Kit Connor said in an interview that he considers this “the best episode of Heartstopper that has been made.” What are your thoughts on that? Would you consider this the best episode you have seen so far?

what are your thoughts on the production quality this season? i think the budget upscale really shows in this ep particularly - i don't often pay much attention to cinematography and editing choices and stuff but genuinely this is one of the most visually gorgeous seasons in terms of, well, everything. editing, cinematography, the animation is so smooth and pretty. i just love seeing heartstopper's growth production wise since season 1.

This episode is very different than any other episode of Heartstopper we’ve had this far. How did you feel about the storytelling aspect getting both Nick and Charlie’s POVs over a large span of time?

(you obvs don't have to read this bit out bc it's not really a question, lol) also, in regards to the "heartstopper being unrealistic to teens/schools in the uk" question from the last episode, i have to disagree w the commenter. i don't watch a lot of uk based teen drama shows but to me, heartstopper has the most realistic portrayal of average teens in the uk in any tv show i've seen, ever. at least in my experience. these characters do actually feel like real teenagers i could have been friends with in high school. i was an awkward cringe teen who was friends with other awkward cringe teens and i was bullied for being an awkward cringe teen. (granted the awkward cringey-ness is still here but now i know that's just the autism, lol. most people were awkward cringe teens so i do hate how heartstopper gets labelled as cringe a lot) yeah, it's an idealistic version of reality, sure. it's wish fullfilment, in a way - like, i WISH i had the supportive teachers and the big queer friend group who were so supportive of one another in high school and i even wish i had the high school relationship experience but in that regard, i didn't get so lucky. people often say they can't relate to heartstopper but idk, to me it's one of the only teen dramas i CAN relate to bc it's abt as close to my high school experience as i can get from a tv show. i can't relate to the teens in most of the popular US teen drama shows.

You mentioned in a previous reaction that you felt that Heartstopper might have rushed through the discovery of Charlies eating disorder (due to length of episodes and what not) After watching the time jump in episode 4 and the montages, do you still feel like the topic has been rushed over? And if you do, do you think that rushing over this serious topic will give unrealistic expectations for others seeking similar treatment as to how 'quick' it will be?

A bit of background info for you — as you might be aware Charlie and Nick both appeared as characters for the first time in Alice’s debut novel Solitaire (which they wrote when they were 17), which is centered around Tori and begins in January about a month after this episode ends. The novel has very little overlap with Heartstopper in terms of tone (it’s way darker and more negative) and characters, but a major aspect of the book is Charlie’s eating disorder and self-harm recovery following returning home from an in-patient stay at a clinic. Alice wrote Solitaire years before Heartstopper, before they even had an idea of how Nick and Charlie had met. Knowing this, does it reframe any of your thoughts on the storyline in any way (good, bad, or neutral)? I mostly ask because I feel like most people (who haven’t read Alice’s books) look at Charlie’s storyline this season as a choice the show or comics made to explore this topic after the characters and relationships were established — but it’s actually an adaptation of something that existed before almost any other aspect of this show. Which is a very different lens to view the storyline through, particularly when you consider the adaptational choices they made to tell the story through journal entries, the ways that the friend group were weaved into this very Charlie-centric portion of the story, and generally dealing with topics that are very heavy for a show like this. I also feel it’s interesting to look at the differences between a teenager writing about a fictional teenager going through a mental health crisis, vs that same writer going back and writing about those experiences from an adult perspective.

What are your thoughts on the growth and development of Nick’s relationships with both Tao and Tori? They are probably two of the most important people to Charlie’, and it has been an interesting journey over three seasons to watch them accept Nick’s place in the friend group and in Charlie’s life. Somewhat related, now that everyone likely knows what a big role Nick played in getting Charlie to ask for help, do you think that impacted their view of him, particularly Charlie’s mom? We see that she’s allowed Nick to come with the family to the treatment center for visits, but do you think this situation has altered her view on Nick or his relationship with Charlie as a whole?

After this year of my mental health Roller Coaster journey I feel very seen, they did an amazing job on it. My question is how do you think they did in this episode? Do you think it was good representation?

In light of such a heavy episode, since there were more MCU mentions, I have a few links to art Alice (the creator and writer of the books and show) has drawn of Nick and Charlie on Halloween through the years :) Hulkling and Wiccan!! I now head canon that the Cap and Spidey one is the year after this episode. Nick looks so happy! I love Sai ribbing him in the comments 🤭

What are your thoughts on how they handled the 3 part reveal of what happened with Imogen and Sahar?

Olivia

one of the things i really appreciated about this episode was the fact that it showed both nicks pov (the carer/supporter) and charlies pov (the individual struggling with their mental health) and that is something you rarely see being portrayed, certainly in regards to showing nicks struggles during this time aswell as charlies - what are your thoughts on the fact that they decided to show both povs over the course of the 2 months which included some very low moments for the both of them but it ending on a hopeful note after they reunited again?
