I feel like Vincent and Ivy's conversation can be directly applied to Elijah here. They were discussing whether it is better to not have knowledge of things that might cause you pain if they were also a source of love, and how it's important to be all parts of yourself. Elijah made the choice of ignorance, and it cost him more than if he had been fully informed.

This is my favourite show ever. Hayley’s death was the one that hit me the most in the TVD universe. Her losing her wolf side. Sacrificing herself for hope. Seeing Elijah realising he wasn’t trying to help ( f#ck the writers for that) To her turning off her humanity and killing herself and greta like that…

Just like you I place a chunk of the blame on Roman. He had apt time to unlearn enough of the propaganda to do something, but he made his choice. For God’s sake he went to a school with a bunch of different supernatural creatures all living together and he still had those vile prejudices.
