Head to the updates section in the messages area for a full explanation, but TLDR I am going to be releasing a season breakdown tomorrow that will feature the questions for E6 and going through overall thoughts 🫡

I left this comment in the ep 5 post but please react to Hudson and Connor's interviews after the show like the compliment battle and reading thirst tweets :)) I think you'll really enjoy them and their personalities especially how unhinged Hudson is LOL

Explaining the word “lovers” and why Shane is grossed out…here in the U.S and Canada it just carries a gross connotation. I don’t know how to explain it, but it paints a picture of a couple constantly all over each other…I don’t know haha. It is interesting though, cause to Ilya it is the closest word to what they have, but culturally it doesn’t translate well. He tried his best! But yeah, I don’t think Shane is feeling shame, just the word itself triggers like a full body flinch haha (at least to some but hey maybe it’s a neurospicy thing too)

For Ilya: it was the best day of his life (actual quote from the book). He got a home cooked meal, got to kiss his boyfriend in front of people, and he got to call Shane his boyfriend. What I want to know is what Ilya and David spoke about when Shane and Yuna were outside haha

There’s a great quote I wanted to share from Hudson about the “I love you” scene, in an interview he did with Variety: “Yeah, but even though Shane doesn’t say it first, he says all these things that are, if they’re not love, what the fuck are they? You know, “Let’s start a foundation.” He’s staying up in the middle of the night plotting their way. When Ilya says, “You think that far ahead, Hollander?” “I do about this.” […] So I think he, even though he didn’t say it first, he made that cottage a home for Ilya to be able to say it.”

Ya, not sure how else to explain it but “lovers” is just an icky word in Canada (and I’m assuming US) 😅. You don’t use it genuinely to describe a romantic partner, it’s like an old-fashioned word.

i am loving your reactions. i would LOVE to know if you are going to react to the book/ audiobook. i only ask as i have read it but have no one to talk to about it since i am the bookworm in my friend group.

Emily Brown

Those are funny and unhinged, but their thoughtful interviews are really great, too. Hudson on Shut Up, Evan is excellent

Kristin

Your anger at it ending was hilarious. So real.

When it comes to Shane reacting the way he did to the term lovers being used i have a very different theory, but it is a quite tinfoil one. I will say it is far from the first time people mentioning or alluding to sex has made Shane uncomfortable and leave it at that.

j-l

in the book we find out that the reason ilya first refers to his moms death as an accident is because thats what his dad told him to say to people :( he wasnt allowed to talk about what actually happened, so im honestly not even sure svetlana knows

j-l

just wanna let you know that in the book ilya sees the day he met shanes parents as the best day of his life :') that boy just wants a family

Would you ever consider reacting to interviews with the cast and director? There are a bunch of good ones that help shed ight on how everyone on the show was thinking about their roles and what kind of story they wanted to create, but these are some really good ones if you'd be interested in doing reactions! https://youtu.be/bEpwCQr0QZk?si=4A3PUbbNWG90YTa9 https://youtu.be/HOePyTAK3GU?si=hzmRuEu9un6gO3Af https://youtu.be/j_DO7ZA4bFA?si=tCEh54iOem_G7WRZ There are also some really good ones out there that are less about the show but really showcase Connor and Hudson's friendship, and they're very fun to watch together!

Regarding the show making you re-evaluate life things… it made me want to learn ice skating 🤣. Went to my first lesson last weekend.

Noora

Thank you so much for your reaction to the show. As a lesbian, I've never gotten to see this kind of love depicted so wholesomely on any piece of media and it's about time. I'm totally in love with this love story and love to see people relate to it. <3

Kris

In the US, the term "lovers" sounds odd and is considered way more outdated than in other places, so hearing it is rare. Shane is already uncomfortable enough talking about his sexuality, so hearing that term used to describe his sex life, especially in front of his parents, is what makes it "gross". It’s less about shame and more about Shane’s long-standing awkwardness with sex, a trait even Ilya and his friends have teased him about. If he’s uncomfortable with friends, he’s definitely cringing at the thought of that word being used to and by his parents.

Endymion

If you like this show, you should watch (or maybe react) to Queer as Folk (US). It's great to an covers a lot of the same stuff. Just no sport. Just a group of gay and lesbian friends.
