As an EMT here I can speak on Hen’s duty of care on scene…she did not follow protocol. Yes, a patient can refuse care but after a trauma, especially if you suspect intoxication or altered mental status of some kind, you have to establish alertness and orientation at the very least. We refer to it as a patient being AOx3 (sometimes 4): is the patient awake and alert? Are they oriented to person, place, time, event? Once those are established you can decide if the patient can give informed consent for treatment. If not, you are well within your right to intervene on the patients behalf. Hen do not fully evaluate, neither did anyone else, and the patient did not sign a refusal of care after explaining to him the risks of denying, that we saw. That saves you from liability. So yeah, she was in the wrong. Fully. Doesn’t matter what the patient did. We don’t play God.

Also, I do like that they chose Hen for this storyline because you’d never expect it from her but it happens more often to the most seasoned of EMT’s/Medics. Sometimes you see such horrible sides of humanity it’s hard to separate the good you do from the 2nd chances you give to those who caused such pain. Part of the job is reconciling that and we saw that a bit last season with Ravi when he delayed his return to the 118 after saving the father who drove his family off a pier.

I was actually wondering about that so it's cool that you gave your perspective on it. Cuz that guy was full on aggressive with Chimney just for trying to evaluate him. I did wonder if there was maybe something he needed to sign to state he's the one refusing any type of care because there doesn't seem much that any of them could have done with him being so aggro. Unless we're gonna pin him down to check him, which probably would have done more harm than good
